Journey....We Have A Problem.......2007-07-16
Even though this re-release sounds better than previous ones, at the beginning of the first song, "Girl Can't Help It", a split second of the very first drum beat is missing. Overall, the CD is excellent especially with the added tracks. If you like your recordings of studio music to be prefect like I do in most cases, then this re-release is not for you. Find one used that was recorded from the master properly.
why the critics hated journey.......2007-06-11
This album is a shimmering, glimmering, moody, mystical masterpiece. The wonderful Cain keyboards are in front of the mix creating atmosphere, there is a little less of the great Neal Schon but what is here is as good as always, and the incomparable Steve Perry's voice is lower in the register than it was through most of his career, which actually makes him sound even better. Indeed, it is just about impossible to sound much better than Perry did at this stage of his career. He was truly the voice of his generation of pop-rock singers.
Raised on Radio is, in short, the best album of its type -- which is not the style Journey is most known for, but something very similar to late Roxy Music, mainly their great album Avalon.
It says much that Roxy Music was a critics' darling, whereas Journey was, and is, panned by critics. I don't know about Roxy, but I know why critics didn't like Journey or Foreigner or the like. Virtually all pro or semi-pro music critics are part of a far-left political culture and they wear their agenda on their sleeves. They hardly understand or care about music; their interest is that bands promote leftist politics one way or another. Any band that is very popular but apolitical will be perceived as an enemy and attacked relentlessly, in order to focus attention on bands the politically correct deem more acceptable. Journey concentrated on actually making music, so the critics hated them. The "music" rags had more power in those days, but these things never change. They branded Journey "corporate", whatever that means. I didn't realize that corporations wrote these sugary melodies and sang them like an angel; I thought that was Steve Perry. And as far as I can tell, he sings better than any Beatle (just to compare them to the all-time boomer generation critical favorite), Schon plays guitar better than any Beatle, this band wrote better melodies than any Beatle, and they were darn near as popular as the Beatles. They just didn't write better, or more importantly, more agressively left-wing lyrics than the Beatles, so the twentysomething lit-major socialists who write music reviews don't like them.
I do. I like them better than the Beatles. By a lot. They're less annoying and far superior sonically. If you're reading this review, I bet you think so, too. Don't feel guilty about it. Feel guilty if you've been brainwashed so badly that you don't have Raised on Radio (and the equally superb albums that preceded it) in your collection. At least you can remedy that situation as soon as possible; there's no remedy for rock critics.
some great tunes but not as good as frontiers/escape/infinity.......2007-05-25
the songs on ror are good in their own right but they are too ballady for me and i tend to prefer ballads. the songs lack the rocking edge in frontiers and the simplicity of infinity. sort of too polished a sound in my opinion and the fact that smith and valory weren't featured on this album made it lose a few points in my book. again, i bought this for the collectible digipak packaging which included a booklet with old pictures and tour dates. but this time they were all pics of just the trio rather than the power quintet. my favorite tracks were happy to give and eyes of a woman.
Great CD.......2007-05-07
I bought this CD for my wife. She has all the Steve Perry CD's. If you don't know Journey and you're thinking of listening to them this would be one of the great CD's. Although all of them are great.
Best Journey Album & Tour.......2007-04-07
I saw Journey 2 Times in the Steve Perry period. I SAW the FRONTIERS L.A.show, then the Raised On Radio show in Long Beach. They were both great shows, but the change in the band on the Raised On Radio album gave the band a stronger, punchier sound. And the live show was the Proof,I told a friend today that "Raised On Radio is like the perfect album" I still love this album, and the reissue CD has that reminder of the power of that live show. The 2 live tracks at the end are Fantastic, I Want More! Journey Fans, Buy this CD, You'll Love it... I Still Do.

Raised On A Higher Level.......2005-08-18
When I first heard "Do You Know (Knife In Your Back)" I quickly grabbed a pencil and wrote the name of the band down on my list of bands to check out. After listening to "Scavenger" and "A.M.E.R.I.K.A." I decided to purchase the album. And I sure am glad I did.
Raised On Whipped Cream at its core is simple. Take catchy and unique punk rock songs and inject them with all the political messages you could want. Besides the message Brandon Jordan and crew are trying to deliver, each song presents something new. Rarely do I listen to an album where I can't say that one song sounds too much like another. This just isn't the case here. Each song is different in one way or another.
There also are few songs that are below the average. The list of great songs is impressive: "A.M.E.R.I.K.A", "Scavenger", "Do You Know (Knife In Your Back)", "Pull Out", "Entertained", "Penis Envy", "Freedom?", and "Classroom Blues". The only songs that don't compare to the forementioned list are "Where Go We", "Raised On Whipped Cream", and the bonus track.
While some may be turned off by Brandon Jordan's slightly raspy/whiny voice, I enjoyed it. It fits the mood and the sound of the music perfectly. The guitars, bass, and drums are all well done but none of them are going to blow you away.
(The following thoughts on the album art have no effect on my score. I just have an interest in graphics and photography so I'm always critiquing album covers.) The album art...sucks? Seriously. It's simplistic to the extreme and looks like it took about five minutes to make. And like so many bands, the members don't look at the camera in the photo with the exception of Jordan. The only plus is that the song list on the back is displayed like food nutrition information on the side/bottom of a box.
OVERALL: Buy it. Buy it today. Just don't let Killradio pass you by.
Oh My God.........2005-08-15
This band is unbelievable. My new favorite rock band. This CD blew me away, I knew I had to get it after hearing Do You Know on the internet. Every song on this album hit like a brick wall to just how good this band is, and I can't pick a favorite. Killradio is very underrated right now and I can't believe it, but give them a couple months and they're going to be huge. Just because MTV plays complete sh*t, along with 90% of every other tv & radio station. The lyrics are amazing; they are mostly about America, politics. I could connect with them beacause all their views are the same as mine on the world today (corrupt American gov't, a pointless war, school, and some of the ignorant American society.) Everyone who's smart will be able to connect with them too. Their sound, guitars, and drums are also amazing.
Go watch the Do You Know video on launch.com and you'll believe me right away. One of the best bands of all time, and one of my favorite cds. Watch out for them..They're coming..
Better than i thought.......2005-05-25
i heard these guys and their song "scavenger" on the need for speed underground 2 soundtrack, and i thought it was very different from what i usually listen to, i.e. tbs, the used, saosin, and other emo basically. i got their cd and wow. the lyrics are so much better than i could have hoped for. i like "pull out" the most. the best message is "penis envy", but thats prob cuz i'm not american.
So close and yet so far.......2004-12-24
I've been following KillRadio ever since I heard their sampler "Off With His Head", which included some pretty decent tracks like "AMERIKA", which is probably one of the better ones on "Raised on Whipped Cream".
This is obviously a band with lots to say, and I will say that it's nice to see a band that's so hardcore political. I haven't seen a band this devoted to current events and social issues since the Sex Pistols and the Clash. However, the difference between the Sex Pistols and Kill Radio is that the Pistols focused their attention equally on The Man and the music. KillRadio has a halfway decent sound, but the music as a whole seems like a thin background for Brandon Jordan's preachy lyrics.
Which isn't to say that this band is bad. This is only their first CD. To my knowledge, the band doesn't have that much of a following yet (I'm basing this on what I saw at Warped Tour, where they played to an audience of about 7 people, myself and my friend included). To really get good, KillRadio needs to get experience. As soon as they've gotten a bigger taste of the wide world, they'll get better. I'll continue to watch the band closely. I'm looking forward to seeing how they'll develop, and I hope that other listeners will give these guys the attention they deserve and obviously crave.
Killradio.......2004-09-24
My friends. Good to see they're finally getting somewhere. This is a great cd from a bunch of cool people with a great live show. You won't be dissapointed with this one...I just can't get over the baby doin' the whip-it...that's great...

Overlooked Classic.......2006-10-07
"Raised on Radio" is one of Journey's best albums, though it has been largely overlooked by fans. It marks a subtle evolution from the harder edged "Frontiers" which is clearly the result of Steve Perry taking more control of the band and his production of this album. The album is replete with fantastic cuts, including "Girl Can't Help It," "Positive Touch," "Suzanne," "Be Good to Yourself," "It Could Have Been You," and the exquisite ballads "I'll Be Alright Without You and "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever." Admittedly there are some tracks which would have fit better on Perry's solo album "Street Talk," specifically "Once You Love Somebody," "Happy to Give" and "The Eyes of a Woman." The title cut, "Raised on Radio," should have been left off the album altogether.
This 2006 remaster is a must have for any Journey fan. The sound quality is far superior to that of the originally issued CD. It also includes two great live cuts. I only wish they had included the fantastic instrumentals "With a Tear" and "Into Your Arms" from this era and included on the Time3 box set.
The End of an Era.......2006-09-22
Journey's "Raised on Radio" was the ninth album released by the band from San Francisco. Released in 1986, it went double platinum and spawned five hits. Despite its success, it's genesis was one of turmoil.
After Steve Perry's very successful "Street Talk" album hit the charts in 1984, the five members of Journey regrouped to begin work on new material. Much has been written on the internet and other sources as to the circumstances that broke up the band... the long and short of it - founding member Ross Valory (bassist) was fired and drummer Steve Smith left after recording three tunes. That left original member guitarist Neil Schon, keyboardist Jon Cain (new since 1981) and lead Steve Perry (new since 1978) as the band that we know as "Journey." Studio musicians Larrie London, Bob Glaub and Randy Jackson (now recognized for his work on "American Idol") filled in on the remaining tracks.
The music of "Raised on Radio" took a definite turn with the new lineup. Where the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" had led toward harder, edgier rock, "ROR" delved deeper into the pop arena. Not that it was a bad thing - it sold albums; however I've often wondered what direction the songs would have taken had the band stayed together.
Although the three remaining members are credited for writing most of the material on the album, the sound is very much that of Perry and Cain. The duo created some very memorable melodies - melodies that have natural rises and falls that "hook" the listener in. The last track, "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" is a perfect example of this. For one familiar with this tune, the opening four notes make it instantly recognizable. This gorgeous ballad ranks right up there with "Faithfully."
My favorite tune on the album is "Girl Can't Help It." The best part is the end with all of the vocal overdubs. This song is as fresh for me twenty years later as the first time I heard it. I absolutely love the chord progressions, which a couple of borrowed chords in the chorus - totally cool!
"I'll Be Alright Without You" hasn't been a favorite of mine, but does feature a stellar guitar solo at the end by Neil Schon. Very different from his previous solos, it is almost in a "smooth jazz" style - a style that he would use on later solo albums. The two big hits, "Suzanne" and "Be Good To Yourself" have become part of Journey's classic rock repertoire, the latter reminding me a little of "Only the Young." Both of these songs have become favorites amongst fans.
Well, I've listed the five hits, which are, unfortunately, the best part of the album. Outside of them, "The Eyes of a Woman" is the only one that stands out. It has a very well written melody is sounds very similar to "Send Her My Love," a song off of the "Frontiers" album. The rest of the songs aren't bad, but I certainly don't make a point of listening to them, either.
So...my advice? If you're an upcoming Journey fan, as I was twenty years ago, you'll want this album for your collection. You might find the other seven songs worthwhile. On the other hand, if you don't want to make the investment, buy the greatest hits or the "Time 3" collection. At least there you'll have the best stuff altogether.
One of the best albums from a very tight band!.......2006-07-01
OKay, maybe I'm biased because I saw the band perform not long after this album came out. They had the rhythm section of Randy Jackson (yes, the American Idol judge) and Mike Baird, who's performed with Rick Springfield and countless others. They did a good job of taking the material on this and so many other Journey albums to a brand new level. Raised on Radio is what it says it is...radio-friendly rock & roll that grabs hold and won't let go. This was no "atrocious" album as one reviewer put it...it was from a band who knew how to say what was on its mind and the results are some of the most unmistakable Journey songs of the highest order...only regret is that the live version of "Girl Can't Help It" wasn't released until the "Time" boxed set. This album is a must! Pay no attention to the "corporate rock" complainers...just enjoy!
A change of pace but good quality nonetheless.......2006-06-15
Not a thumping CD but a clever more pop CD than their previous efforts. It has been canned in the past reviews but as an offering as a whole, it is a very complete effort. Perry belts out a couple of tracks, there are a few radio friendly songs and the closing Why cant this night go on forever is classic Journey power ballad. Not a weak track on this CD.

Killradio is the BEST!!.......2006-07-24
This is by far my favorite CD! I was able to catch them preform in Austin a couple of months ago and they put their all into it and rocked. This album is all about its intense political lyrics from front man Brandon Jordan and its righteous sounds of fury. Bottom line if you wanna hear some deep music, BUY THIS CD!! you won't regret it.
