The 12-string electric guitar may never recover. As long as there are baby boomers roaming the earth, its airy jangle will signify psychedelic innocence and optimism refracted through the peculiar light of mid-'60s L.A. With Roger McGuinn leading, the Byrds kicked off American rock history with a merger of Bob Dylan's words and the Beatles' melodic energy. The results are here: "Mr. Tambourine Man," "The Bells of Rhymney," and "Eight Miles High" still jump off the airwaves. The midpoint between Dylan and the Beatles is a one-of-a-kind place, where optimism and innocence still sound smart. --Steve Tignor --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5 out of 5 stars The REAL best of the Byrds.......2007-07-03

The thing about the Byrds is that after they lost David Crosby and Gene Clark, they totally disintergrated into insignificance. Don't try to tell me Notorious Byrds Brothers, Sweetheart of the Rodeo or Untitled are masterpieces, because I'll only laugh at you if you do. And Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde is one of the worst albums ever. But the David Crosby/Gene Clark/Jim McGuinn/Chris Hillman/Michael Clarke Byrds were great, and this contains most of their biggest songs - in fact, the only classic they missed is Crosby's masterpiece Everybody's Been Burned, but its parent album Younger Than Yesterday is a must-have in the first place. Still, I would've taken over their dirge-like cover of Dylan's Chimes of Freedom, one of the few missteps found on the great Mr. Tambourine Man.
Every other song here is great, though: Quite a few solid Dylan covers (Mr. Tambourine Man; All I Really Wanna Do; My Back Pages, my personal favorite of the bunch), and the group's classic originals: the free jazz folk raga Eight Miles High (my favorite Byrds song); cynical, Dylanesque I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better; industry attack So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star; space-rocker 5D; folk-rocker Mr. Spaceman; and their classic Pete Seeger cover Turn! Turn! Turn!, today a radio staple.
The reissue, with bonus tracks, only makes this album better. It adds two noteworthy songs from Turn! Turn! Turn! (It Won't Be Wrong; Set You Free This Time), and one of the best songs from Younger Than Yesterday (Have You Seen Her Face?) Make sure to have this album!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Nostalgia.......2007-02-12

This album brings back the spirit of the Sixties. Interestingly, we have many of the same problems now that we had then. This music got people interested in what was happening and the anti-war movement finally succeeded. Where is this kind of music these days? Back in the Sixties the politicians were old and nobody paid any attention to rock. Those in power are hipper now. Anybody who dares to speak out today is punished-- the Dixie Chicks did it and got crucified.

I enjoyed listening to the CD, it took me back to my youth. Not a CD that I would play a lot, but when I need a trip down memeory lane, it is a good choice.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Folk Rock From The Sixties!.......2007-05-04

The Byrds officially existed between 1964 and 1973, fusing folksy rock sounds from Bob Dylan and the Beatles. Highlights are Dylan's, "Mr. Tambourine Man" and Pete Seeger's, "Turn, Turn, Turn". Their heavy acoustic guitar sound is unmistakable and this SACD format brings it all WAY up front. Although the members all went onto other groups and fame, this collection is memorable. Rolling Stone Magazine has them ranked in the Top 50 of Greatest Artists of All Time. It is not just a great listen; it is an experience! Note that this SACD truly brings out the finer qualities of this album, but is only remixed in stereo; not multi-channel.

3 out of 5 stars Sound on SACD Version is Disappointing.......2007-02-05

While I love the Byrds and every song on this Greatest Hits album, this review pertains only to the sound of the premium-priced SACD reissue of this album,. Something has gone terribly wrong with the remastering for the SACD version. The sound is brittle and hard and lacking in bass, and while the word is that the original masters in Colombia's vaults aren't in the greatest condition, that couldn't possibly explain it, because the sound quality is pretty terrific on Columbia's recent series of 20 bit remastered standard CD Columbia CDs, which presumably come from the same master tapes. I have not had a chance to compare this SACD version of "Greatest Hits" with the sound on the standard version, because this is not a hybrid SACD, which would contain the standard CD sound on a separate layer. So the bottom line is that if you are thinking of buying this to have SACD versions of these incredible songs, don't waste your money. Buy the remastered regular CDs.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting milestone. Not a true 'greatest hits'........2006-03-23

'The Byrds Greatest Hits', originally released with this cover somewhere around 1968, before the Byrd's single most important album, 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo', always seemed to me to be 'Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits as done by the Byrds'. As such, the album is as much a testament to Dylan's importance as it is to the popularity of the Byrds. To make the picture even murkier, two of the original 11 cuts are classic traditional folksongs made popular originally by Pete Seeger.

In some ways, the Byrds are one of those groups which are more significant for the artists and groups they spawned than for their original work. David Crosby and Chris Hillman are probably much better known as parts of 'Crosby, Stills and Nash' and 'The Flying Burrito Brothers' respectively than they are as original members of the Byrds, which became primarily a vehicle for last surviving founding member, Roger McGuinn, who was responsible for the 12 string guitar, the most distinctively original aspect of their early work.

If you have no Byrds CD's, look for one of the other larger collections which cover their whole career and not just their most famous first four years.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best American group of the early 60's.......2005-11-22

John Lennon called the Byds his favorite American group. In my opinion Lennon was right.
The Byrds had as much if not more influence on the music of the 60's than any band in history.
The Byrds covered Dylan as well as Pete Seeger.
Several songs to this day are classics such as Mr Tambourine Man and Turn, Turn, Turn among others.
Eight Miles High is another classic as well as Feel A Whole Lot Better and Mr Spaceman.
Roger Mc Guinn as well as David Crosby have left a mark on music that well never be forgotten.
This CD is a true classic. I would recommend it to anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Their Greatest hits, not their greatest collection.......2005-03-20

If you want just one Byrds CD, the "20 Essential Tracks from the Boxed Set" is the best value. Used copies are selling remarkably cheaply on Amazon Marketplace. And the sleeve notes are excellent. This "Greatest Hits" CD contains just 4 tracks not found on "20 Essential Tracks" and the sleeve notes are decidedly dispensable. Maybe for those 4 tracks, some downloading or rip 'n' burn is in order.

There is no doubting the importance of The Byrds. Their Beatles-meets-Dylan formula was immensely influential and their music still sounds fresh and fun. So 5 stars for the music, but I felt short-changed with this particular collection, so only 3 stars for it. If you do buy it, at least make very sure you get the version with the 3 bonus tracks, otherwise you are being short-short-changed.

2 out of 5 stars What an Unfortunate Collection of "Hits".......2005-02-02

I consider myself to be a great fan of the Byrds, including the latter-day Byrds after everyone was either fired or quit except McGuinn. Clarence White deserves to be the "Sixth Byrd", since he's been playing on Byrds albums since "Younger Than Yesterday". My problem is not with McGuinn's new lineup of players. My problem is with the track selection.

If Columbia is going to feature the faces of these four guys on the cover, then they should not have featured any of the tracks from "Notorious Byrd Bros." or "Sweetheart of the Rodeo". Those two records don't need to be plucked from anyway. They should stand alone and left intact as classic concept albums. They rightfully belong to the likes of Crosby, Hillman, Gram Parsons and Mike Clarke, not Battin and Gene Parsons, whose faces don the cover of "GH Vol.II". Columbia should have recognized that "Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde" started the last phase of the Byrds, where McGuinn was the only remaining original. Therefore, this record should have reflected the best of the Byrds since "Dr. Byrds".

With that being said, I also don't approve of the inclusion of some very terrible songs like "America's Great National Pastime" (this song in particular does not deserve to be under the Byrds title. I have no idea why McGuinn allowed for this to happen), and "I Wanna Grow Up to be a Politician" and "Citizen Kane". Let's get real! These are not good songs! Again, I love the latter-day Byrds, so I've come up with my own version of "Greatest Hits Vol II". I hope some of you fans will agree:

1. Ballad of Easy Rider
2. Chestnut Mare
3. Your Gentle Ways of Loving Me
4. All The Things
5. Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man
6. Just a Season
7. Gunga Din
8. I Trust
9. Kathleen's Song
10. Mae Jean Goes To Hollywood
11. Glory, Glory
12. Bugler

5 out of 5 stars Best of The Byrds Volume 2 is loaded with creativity........2002-12-03

Some of these other reviewers just didn't get it. These songs are gems, they are adventurous sonic masterpieces that are in some ways reminiscent of some of the songs on the Beatles White Album.
Not that the Byrds' style is the same, but certain of these songs display such wit and humor that the listener is not sure if a song is a complete parody or partially serious. Yet at the same time the originality of the musical arrangements shine through. If you like some of the White album songs such as Rocky Raccoon, Honey Pie, Back In The U.S.S.R., and Bungalow Bill, then you should like this album. Many of the songs have a countrified sound, like McCartney's Rocky Raccoon, but distinctly Byrds. The Byrds infuse influences from older musical traditions, such as the 1930s tinge on Citizen Kane. The Beatles had done this on Honey Pie, but it was more of a 1920s sound. And the subtle parody of Back In The U.S.S.R. is mirrored by I Wanna Grow Up To Be A Politician.
The songs: Citizen Kane is about ultra-wealthy publisher William Randolph Hearst, who back in the 1930s owned a castle and 40 miles of prime California coastline. The castle was called Xanadu. The major Hollywood movie stars would drop by for wild parties, and the song is a slightly exaggerated account of their escapades.
Tiffany Queen is another song about people who might be having too much fun at parties. Chestnut Mare is the wild horse the narrator is intent on catching, but its not really a wild horse anymore if he catches it, is it?
I wasn't Born To Follow and Easy Rider romanticize the freedom of the individual and the lure of the American Road, pre-sport-utes. Jesus Is Just Alright With Me was paid a tribute when the Doobie Brothers' later version cloned the Byrds' sound almost exactly, and become a hit.
He Was A Friend Of Mine is a folk rock tune expressing the nation's emotions after President Kennedy's assassination.
This eclectic batch of songs somehow fits together as a whole. If you are open to the idea of music combining brilliant electric guitar work and country music influences, along with intelligent lyrics, and some humor, then this could be your CD.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music in a Slight Package.......2002-08-26

The first thing you'll notice when looking at the track listing for "The Best of the Byrds" is that it contains none of their mid-60s mega-hits (all of which are on the first Greatest Hits album). Like The Beatles, who they were often compared to, The Byrds shifted gears around 1967 and began concentrating on recording great albums. But while The Beatles continued to enjoy singles chart success, The Byrds took their music in a more decidedly anti-commercial direction. Namely, in the wake of Gram Parsons's brief membership in the band, they began incorporating elements of traditional country music into their sound.

What's most noticable on this album is that nearly every song has a strong country flavor. The best tracks are the story song "The Ballad of Easy Rider," one of their best Bob Dylan covers, "You Ain't Going Nowhere," "Jesus is Just Alright" (later made into a hit by The Doobie Brothers in a less country sounding version), "He Was a Friend of Mine," and the political commentary of "I Wanna Grow Up to Be a Politician." While the music is strong, however, this collection is pretty slight at only 11 songs. Additionally, the CD booklet contains only a track listing and a few perfunctory liner notes. A band with a legacy as large as The Byrds should have a more representative anthology album, not to mention CD bonus tracks.

Overall, a short collection of classic material from a band whose stature deserves much more.

5 out of 5 stars Includes Some Of My Favorite Tracks!.......2001-03-01

A superb overview of late Byrds! Lets face it, the later Byrds albums were often uneven, but this fine disc collects many of the greatest tracks in one convenient package. Here you can see the transformation of the band from folk pop to country rock. The vocals are top notch. An excellent choice for fans of The Band, The Dead or The Eagles. This album includes some fine and often over looked songs with sharp social criticism. Especially well suited to casual fans of the band, and I recommend it highly. Stand out tracks include `I Wanna Grow Up To Be A Politician', `America's Great National Pastime' and `You Ain't Going Nowhere'. I must admit though, that I find `Chestnut Mare' to be tiresome.

4 out of 5 stars Not As Good As It Could Have Been.......2000-01-27

When this album originally came out in 1972 (a year before the reunion album--the band's last), this Greatest Hits II made a lot of sense. The Byrds previous two albums especially (Byrdmaniax and Farther Along) contained some fairly weak tracks. So compiling a "greatest hits" album (though none of these even cracked the Top 40) was a golden opportunity to compile all the best tracks between 1968's The Notorious Byrd Brothers (not Sweetheart of the Rodeo as the previous reviewer indicated) through 1971's Farther Along.

This collection fails on several accounts:

1) In the CD age a 30-minute CD (actually 30:29) isn't giving you much bang for your buck. The length could eadily have been doubled and still fit on a single disc.

2) Too much attention was paid to the last two studio albums--arguably the weakest of their career. Of the eleven tracks on this disc, these two albums are represented by four songs, including the slight "America's Great National Pastime" and the equally goofy "I Wanna Grow Up To Be a Politician."

3.) Too many great songs were overlooked. Where's David Crosby's "Lady Friend," which was only available as a single (peaked at #82) until it was released on The Byrds Boxed Set? Why only one track from the landmark Sweetheart of the Rodeo? "I Am a Pilgrim" was also released as a single from the album. The Byrds' cover of the Dylan-penned "Lay Lady Lay" was another single-only release until the Boxed Set.

The truth is all of these songs (except "Citizen Kane") are on The Byrds Boxed Set--90 songs of prime Byrds material. If your budget can afford it, get the box. Otherwise, ten bucks will get you some of the great late-period Byrds like "Chestnut Mare," "Ballad of Easy Rider," "Wasn't Born to Follow" and "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man," which belong in any serious Byrds fan's collection. RECOMMENDED (for the budget-minded)
