Customer Reviews:
one of the best performances on stage even without ritchie.......1999-12-01
this cd is extremely good. better than ever, best, simply the best. even without ritchie blackmore. i witnessed the beginning of the 98/99 tour in istanbul and saw them again in paris. it is really fantastic. now i love steve morse...
THIS CD IS TOO GOOD TO EVEN THINK ABOUT NOT GETTING.......1999-11-26
Steve Morse is a godsend.Jon Lord is playing at a whole new level (even for him).Ian Gillan is singing better than he has in years.Paice+Glover are as solid as they have ever been.Bloodsucker, Lazy, and Speed King are the highlights.Anyone who doesn't like this CD needs to open their ears.It is absolutely phenomenal from beginning to end. Blackmore is not missed.
Money well spent.......1999-10-28
I had to buy this one(and the video tape) through a cousin living in the United States. Until I had it in my hands a week ago, I was doubtful if the money was going to be well spent. The first few times I played it, I was judgemental and harsh - particularly about Gillan's singing and Morse's somewhat extravagant, plug-all-holes style - but it's grown on me. Though it is a million miles short of the raw energy and sheer brilliance of Made in Japan, it has its moments of glory. And they are Speed King, Fireball, Perfect Strangers, Ted the Mechanic and Bloodsucker... NOT Highway Star or Smoke on the Water, those two are disappointing. I'd say buy it. There may not be another live album from Deep Purple.

Deep Purple Having Fun On Stage & In Great Form.......2001-07-22
It was based on this CD & the video that I saw Purple in Concert in April 2001 for the 1st time since 1976 (with Tommy Bolin). Guitarist supreme Steve Morse plays "name that riff" before hurtling into the ultimate riff "Smoke On The Water" with his amazing guitar playing which is truly the highlight. Ian Paice & Roger Glover are as tight as ever, Paicey probably playing better now than ever before and that's saying something (I'm speaking as an ex-drummer and a huge fan of Paicey's playing). Ian Gillan is in fine voice with some strange "Stream of conscience" babbling introductions between songs and Jon Lord as always the keyboard virtuoso. The band is clearly having fun with Morse in the group and the addition of less obvious & much forgotten classics like "Bloodsucker" and "Pictures Of Home" as well as some newer stuff from "Abandon" are more than a pleasant surprise. It's great to see them evolving their song set on stage. I'm always looking for more Purple CD's as they come out and I'm delving back into import stuff not available here in Australia. This is the "2001 3 CD version" with a CD Rom component only available on this "Tour Version." The CD Rom contains a "photo tour" of Deep Purple's 1999 Tour of Australia & Europe + a 20 minute Audio interview with Ian Gillan. This version's booklet differs greatly from the great one issued with the standard 2CD release (4 pages instead of 12! plus no back cover picture & spine labelling) which is a very disappointing - I took 1 star off because I rated the packaging as very important but aside from that it's otherwise a highly recommended CD if you can get hold of it!!

Granddaddies of heavy rock classic!.......2003-08-28
Hey this is mark VII purple line up with Gillan, Glover, Lord, Paice and Morse replaced Ritchie Blackmore in 1994.
oh I love ya Grand daddy of heavy rock! I love ya! I really love ya! your music had grown up with my same roots during my childhood! I coud not ever forget the Deep purple style of classic hard rock. It doesn't matter whether they were Mark II, III, IV, V, VI, VII with past time members or current members of the band such as David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Ian Gillan, Blackmore, Bolin, Lord, Paice, Morse, Glover, and teh current Keyboarder Don Airey....you set my heart on fire everytime I listen to you all!
Very cool.......1999-10-29
Many DP fans should know that Ian Gillan is not a young guy anymore, he is 53 years old now,..but I think it is very funny, Ian Gillan is still the ultimate voice of DP,..he wants still scream on stage at the audiences like in 1973 /the DP best time of all...This album with a new blood Steve Morse on guitar is excellent. The last studio album with Blackmore "THE BATTLE RAGES ON 1993" was not very strong enough,.. because the album BATTLE RAGES ON 1993 lacked of Ritchie's position as Guitar man in DP, Ritchie was bored with DP,..and he left the band ,..because he did not have any interrest anymore to continuing the next making of DP albums. Blackmore had been replaced by Steve Morse in 1995 , Steve Morse brought the new Power to PURPLE LEGACY,...he played technically much better than Bolin or Ritchie,...Deep purple got their eye of the tiger,...their Power has started to rise again with steve Morse on guitar...long live DP
A Supreme Moment in Deep Purples History.......1999-10-03
For too long another great Deep Purple live album Live at the Olympia "lived" in my CD player but now it finally recieves a long earned rest. This album is in my opinion the best live Purple album since Made in Japan. The sound clarity, the production and the performances by the band are sensational. Ian Gillans performance on vocals is particularly impressive. It is obvious he has lost some of his power over the years but he is in full control and delivers a brilliant performance. Jon Lord is a sensation on keyboards and the up front mix of the keyboards gives the whole CD wonderful atmosphere. The Glover\Paice rythm axis is as usual incredible with a couple of nifty bass solos from Roger and a short sharp drum solo from the awesome Mr. Paice. Who havent I mentioned?? "Smiling" Steve Morse. His performance on this CD is hard to put into words without sounding ridiculous. All I can say is listen and be "blown away". Solo spots in "Pictures of Home", "Bloodsucker", "Smoke on the Water" are just incredible but the extended solo and overall playing and musicianship on "Sometimes I feel like Screaming" are almost god like. Steve Morse has been a Messiah for Deep Purple and I cant express how great it is to listen to his wonderful work. Amazing interplay and musical duels between Jon and Steve make me smile and enthrall me. This was a wonderful concert ( I was there ) which I will never forget and the CD is a brilliant record of Deep Purples remarkable rebirth since the arrival of Steve Morse. BUY THIS CD...It is an absolute CLASSIC!!!!!!
Unbelievable.......1999-09-15
Jon Lord is playing as if he has been reborn.Steve Morse is the reason.Ian Gillan is singing better than he has in years.Bloodsucker,Lazy, and Speed King are the highlights.Roger+Ian Paice are tight as usual.
Deep Purple is very much alive and well........1999-09-13
In spite of a change of guitarists, Deep Purple is still the band we grew to love. New guitarist, Steve Morse does an excellent job of rendering the old classics. If you liked Made in Japan, you'll love Total Abandon. Ritchie Blackmore is not missed, and Ian, Roger, Jon, and Ian haven't changed much. A great CD---Buy it!
