Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John Sanchez

4 out of 5 stars fun but flawed.......2007-05-07

in 1994, the lion king came out and broke records. the film itself took in an astounding 312 million dollars in the us. that makes it the highest grossing hand-drawn animated feature EVER (an accomplishment that will never be toppled since niether disney nor dreamworks is producing hand drawn features any more). that year at the oscars it also won two awards for the musical score and best original song (three of its songs were nominated0. so how does the music really stand up compared to other disney features.

first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.

SCORE 5 out of 5

the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5

I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5

BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5

HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5

CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5

SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5

so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.

despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09

This is hands down one of the best Disney soundtracks ever! Elton John came up with some killer tunes here! The opening song always give me goosebumps!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-03-31

This album is great, but I can't seem to find the part where simba and scar fight at the end. i was thinking it would be on "King of Pride Rock" but its not... so i'm a little disapointed in that. (thats one of my favorite scenes for some reason) other than that, i love the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14

The songs with lyrics are cute and memorable, but the strength of this album is in the last four songs. Listen to "This Land" and it instantly transports you back to the scene with Simba and Mufasa laying under the stars, and then to the scene where Simba sees Mufasa in the clouds. Listen to "...To Die For" and you feel an intense claustrophobia as you relive Mufasa's last moments and Simba's discovery of his father. Listen to Under The Stars and you can practically hear Simba screaming, "You said you'd always be there for me!" And when King Of Pride Rock comes along, you can feel your heart swell as you see Simba take his place on Pride Rock. The instrumentals are incredible works of art that never fail to draw intense emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16

I'm writing this review not of the release of this Special Edition, but of the music contained within. Disney's release and re-release of products is nothing new. It's one of the reasons that Disney is so strong in the market today. With that said, I have to admit that this is one of the best Disney soundtracks that has ever been cut to a disc. I never owned the original release of this music, so I'm glad that Disney did decide to re-release the original work with a few extras as part of the "The Lion King: Special Edition" release. Everything on here is wonderful, and the score itself was key to the development of the story. Selections such as "King Of Pride Rock" and "To Die For" encompass the emotional ups and downs of this film. Elton John's music is also wonderful on this disc. His most notable offerings are "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life." His only downfall is "I Just Can't Wait To Be King," which should have been left to the youngster who performed Simba's singing voice. It comes acrossed as forced by Elton John as he performs it.

The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.

Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Disney.......2004-11-30

This cd is really good, i love all the songs. Ariel has always been my favourite disney classic. I only have one problem, the singers arn't the actual singers that were in the films, and thats abit of a dissapointment for me. I would recommend this cd but not to people who actually want to listen to the actual people.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Orchestrals.......2002-02-11

What's best about Disney's animated features, is that they contain amazing orchestral scores and songs. With this CD, one can hear the nuances of the full orchestral scores of 4 of Disney's most popular features, as played and by a full symphony and chorus.

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening.......2007-01-23

The Kingston Symphony Orchestra (Kingston, Ontario) may not be the NY Philharmonic, but they do a very creditable job of providing wonderful music for easy listening. I was particularly delighted to find orchestral arrangements of these wonderful tunes. I am very glad that I purchased this album and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys this type of music.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Disney.......2007-01-10

I enjoyed this album and found it useful to choreograph dances for my students.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat sub-standard production quality, but excellent tunes and arrangements.......2005-09-01

The Kingston Symphony Orchestra might not be the very best ensemble in the world (and it shows on this recording), but the lasting power and beauty of the songs on this album and some of the new and lovely arrangements of them are worth the listen. There are some definite technical and musical flaws as far as the recording and ensemble go, but the music and how it's arranged makes up for it.

Three stars for some soaring moments, due to classic tunes and arrangements.

My main beef: Where's The Little Mermaid?? Why discount one of the most beautiful Disney scores ever written?

1 out of 5 stars Crap!.......2005-08-09

What a scam! Terrible arrangements played by a third rate ensemble, called the Kingston Symphony Orchestra, that sounds more like a bad high school orchestra playing in a gym. Don't waste your money on this dog.

Absolutely gorgeous a capella quartet. Stunning and soothing music. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Landini; the dawn of the Renaissance.......2003-04-27

True to thier artistry the A4 conveys Landini as a courtly master; subtle and flowing. Thier singing radiates with the freshness of May.

Landini can be likened to Duccio as Palistrina to Giotto. Duccio is not a painter of angles or the other-worldy but humans on earth. Yet they are not humanized in the Renaissance sense for they lack rotunda and gravity. Rather, they are delicate and "float" and retain something of the soaring intensity and expressive flavor of Medieval art. Yet they are very human and with Duccio as with Landini one can perceive the dawn of the Renaissance.

Like a sunset to sunrise the CD ends with the piece it began (Echo la primavera) singing it with more expansion and reflection. Not bad since the piece is so short. Perhaps the A4 wants to convey an end of a journey or "My end is my begining."

While I'm more used to this music with instruments, at least
portative organ this being Landini, Anonymous 4's is what used to be called a valid perfomance. The snatches of documentation for performance practice we have of this period certainly don't rule out an all vocal approach. I've been a musician long enough to know that given the material and the ability of the musicians they will try everything and I'm sure all vocal renditions were done if an instrument wasn't available. Landini was a part of a rather refined group and his music is very subtle. You can't perform his music as if it was a contra dance without distorting it.
While I'm disappointed, and frankly amazed, that anyone could use this a background music for reviewing a paper it isn't the fault of either the listener who can do what he likes or of the preformers who do a good job.
The performance is very good their intonation is some of the best.

This compilation gives a pretty good idea of what you'll hear if you buy a ticket for a Broadway show in 2003. Leaving revivals aside (there's no Man of La Mancha or Gypsy, for instance), the tracks tend to encompass contemporary songwriters on the Great White Way. Fittingly, the CD begins and concludes with numbers from Hairspray, arguably the most vibrant new pop musical to come down the pike in ages. Sandwiched between are songs by authors making a belated stage debut (Mel Brooks and The Producers, Billy Joel and Movin' Out), arty newcomers (Janine Tesori and ) and seasoned pros (Alan Menken and Howard Ashman with Beauty and the Beast). Of course, the most seasoned pro of them all may well be Giacomo Puccini, making a belated Broadway debut thanks to Baz Lurhrmann's production of La Boheme. The addition of Chicago's "All That Jazz" (from the movie, not the show!) reeks of opportunism, but overall it doesn't spoil a varied collection that should appeal to broad-minded pop lovers everywhere. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

If you are a broadway passer-by, someone who looks to getting to know just what's on broadway and not what's it like, someone who says he's seen all of the broadway shows after reading the "what's on listings" in the papers this is a CD for you. I don't own the CD but own all of the Cds from which songs were taken to make this CD. every musical has it's own style and kind of music, and this CD doesn't even take all the highlights. If you are into really experiencing something when listening to a cd, if you are a real broadway-lover and you are interested in modern musical-writing, every one of the original cast recordings (from which songs were taken to this CD-hairpsray, producers, millie, aida, b&b, boheme, moving out) will be a much bigger enjoyment for you than this one. and most preferabely- all of them! :)

Cheerio,

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars... Steve Miller Band's much maligned, yet outstanding album.......2006-06-27

Steve Miller hit the big time in 1976 with the monster-hit album "Fly Like an Eagle", which was follewed by another big selling "Book of Dreams" in 1978. Things after that were quiet for a while until the band returned in 1981 with this much maligned and misunderstood album.

"Circle of Love" (5 tracks, 33 min.) is comprised of 2 halves: the original Side A has 4 tracks, which flow naturally from "Fly Like an Eagle" and "Book of Dreams": catchy, fun songs. Opener "Heart Like a Wheel" was the lead-off single and put Steve Miller again in the top regions of the Billboard Hot 100. (Side-note: the band did a video for that song, just as MTV was about to hit the airwaves...) "Get On Home" and "Baby Wanna Dance With Me" were in similar vein. Things took a left turn with the title track, a 6+ min. outstanding acoustic ballad, check out the 4 min. instrumental outro, showcasing some of Steve Miller's best guitar work ever. Side B of the album contains just one track, the 16+ min. "Macho City", which was much maligned by Steve Miller fans and critics alike. However, I find the track outstanding, a journey into electronics, rythm & blues, rock, and jam alike, just spectecular. The song did have political overtones, perhaps a reason why it was shunned (a condensed single of the track, just the first 3 min. of the song, chopping off the wild but oh-so-much-fun 13 min. instrumental outro jam, went nowhere on the charts).

This remastered edition has an outstanding audio quality. It also contains some interesting liner notes (in which Steve Miller confesses that the title track and "Macho City" were his favorite tracks, and that the others were added for commercial considerations). That said, this album clips along at a Strokes-like 33 min., and there are no bonus tracks whatsoever. What, they couldn't add some B sides or live tracks from that era? It's what stops me from giving this a 5 star rating. The music is 5 stars, but the remastered edition could've added more value.

3 out of 5 stars 3 stars for macho city only.......2006-04-24

This CD gets 3 stars for macho city only- the other tracs are retro fifties which is kind unfitting in this day 'n' age.

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of its time.......2006-03-07

This is another great performance by Steve Miller. Every song on the album is worth listening to:

Heart Like a Wheel - A great upbeat tune. Very catchy.

Get On Home - An excellent precursor to Born 2 Be Blue which wouldn't come out for another 7 years.

Baby Wanna Dance - Another very catch tune. This one gets me rocking and twisting in my chair at work when it plays in my headset.

Circle of Love - Though the title track is the weakest track on the album, it is a very listenable song and I enjoy laying back with the volume up loud in my headset at home and letting the music relax me. It's like a shot of good single-malt Scotch. It sort of just takes you away from it all for a few minutes.

Macho City - This is the track that seems to bother most people who comment here or elsewhere about the Circle of Love album. Most don't like it. I have liked it from the very first time I listened to it when I bought this album originally in vinyl when it first came out. You should listen to it. It is as on-the-mark in today's socio-political environment as it was when it first came out. I am typing this review while on the TV there are velcro people with x-ray sight making judgments about what's wrong and what's right, telling about macho man taking over this and taking over that. Like Steve Miller's Jackson-Kent Blues and Industrial Military Complex Hex, from the album Number 5, the much-maligned Macho City shows that Steve's music goes much deeper than The Joker.

This is an album, like all of Steve's albums, not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album.......2005-04-14

If you don't own this album, please buy it -- it sounds great! Even the somewhat weird Macho City is fun to listen to. His one top 40 hit was Heart Like A Wheel. Steve Miller was going to put the hit Abacadabra on this album but at the last minute pulled it, because he didn't think it was ready. Had it been on this album, this CD would have had the same success as Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams. None-the-less, this is still an excellent album and the sound texture is very rich!

Disney has been a relatively late comer on Broadway, but it's been hitting pay dirt since the stage version of Beauty and the Beast opened to critical acclaim and commercial success in 1994, followed by The Lion King and Aida. While Aida was the only original stage creation, the other two featured new songs that were not in the movies. In addition, Disney worked with some of New York's finest theatrical talent. In hindsight, hiring Julie Taymor to stage The Lion King was a stroke of genius, but it really was a daring gamble at the Time. Likewise, Beauty and the Beast gave talented theater singers like Terrence Mann and Susan Egan a chance to shine in meaty roles. Disney groomed talent as well: Heather Headley was cast in a supporting part in The Lion King before moving on to the title role in Aida. All three shows are represented on this CD (with a companion book due in October 2002), making for a perfect introduction to their best-known songs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
