4 out of 5 stars An ok album with great bonus disc.......2006-10-13

The original album was only OK with Deal, Loser, Candyman, Passenger, Feel Like A Stranger, Franklin's Tower and Brokedown Palace as standouts. The new bonus disc is cool all the way.

5 out of 5 stars *****FIVE STARS*****And More If I Could!!!!.......2006-06-16

If I Had My Way!!!...If I Had My Way!!!...If I Had My Way!!!!!! Yea, Bob Weir, sounding very "Dave Van Ronk Like", (actually it's a Rev Gary Davis composition) really ripping into the intro of Samson & Delilah. And Billy and Mickey stirring up some true thunder, along with Phil all perfoming yeoman's work as the Deads staleworth rhythm section. Turn it down a tad on the next cut as Jerry gives one his finest, heart-felt reditions of Friend Of The Devil. Once again Jerry's in great voice on Deal, sounding strong and inspired. Passenger, Franklin's Tower and Fire On The Mountain are also given the royal treatment, further testament to this collection's absolute greatness.

What I've always loved about this recording, (I still have my orginal vinyl 2-LP set in mint condition) is the sound. Recorded in the acoustically world acclaimed Radio City Music Hall, NYC, the music jumps right out at you...Crisp, Clean with hardly a trace of echo...Just brilliant. And of course the Bonus material on this new expanded version...Well I'll say, I can't understand why they didn't include everything here in the orginal 1980 release. This really is at the top of the heap in my book. Perhaps only Europe 72 ranks as high as this baby. *****FIVE STARS***** And More If I Could!!!

5 out of 5 stars How Can Anyone Give This Less Than Five Stars?.......2006-04-26

How could you not be totally head over heels crazy for this expanded and digitally remastered collection? If you were even mildly a fan of this set when it was initially released as a 2 record-set, on vinyl back in 1980, then get hip to this expanded version. From the opening drums of Sampson & Daliah to the majestic intro to Friend Of The Devil, true Dead-Heads will know they're in for a rare treat. The music simply jumps out at you, clear and crisp, almost as though you were center stage and Jerry was pickin' those cosmic licks right before your eyes and ears.

Both this and the companion acoustic set "Reckogning" have been digitaly remastered and expanded with lots of bonus tracks. Together they are representative of The Dead in one of their most productive periods. Get with it people...How can anyone rate these two collections anything less than five stars?

4 out of 5 stars Longer Version of album is great... 4.5 stars!.......2006-04-24

...however, there isn't enough jamming on this album. The second set of the show has all of the jamming, which is basically the entire second disc. I'm glad the second part of the show was finally released, it really adds to the show, and enhances the listening experience. My only gripe with this show, or this album, is that the song on the first disc aren't jammed long enough. I mean seriously, a Franklin's Tower under 6 minutes, and a Fire On The Mountain clocking in at just under 7 minutes? Thats a disappointment. But! If you have other live albums like the Dick's Picks sets with longer jams, I'd highly recommend this album. The songs are all well performed musically and vocally. My favorite tune off this one is Row Jimmy. Just excellent! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I've always loved this "album".......2007-01-05

Who wouldn't love this great quality soundboard recording? The set-list has long been one my favorites. It was nice to be able to get it used and not at the expensive import price elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Live Dead, a great oxymoron........2006-02-13

There are many live Dead albums around, some I'm sure are better, but this is a nice lengthy single disc of great songs. I like it because it's a good mix of well-known, and lesser-known tracks. We get excellent versions of "Friend Of The Devil", "Franklin's Tower", and "Fire On The Mountain", as well as more obscure cuts like "Candyman", "Deal", and "Loser". I really have no complaints other than that it's missing "Space" after "Rhythm Devils", which is on the double LP. The mastering could be better, but just turn it up. Overall it's one great disc, and perfect for the person who might otherwise only own a "Best Of". Cool cover too.

5 out of 5 stars Still brings a smile to my face.......2006-02-06

This starts off just like the second half of the show I saw in Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. Lawn lights out, drums started pounding, and 30+ thousand people started bouncing up and down like pogo sticks.

At the time, the sound was state-of-the-art, though this album does not sound as clean as shows recorded after they switched to in-ear monitoring.

I really like the perfomances here, unlike the reviewer who felt they added nothing to the studio albums. Maybe the remembrance has something to do with it...but additionally this album covers a range from fast and uptempo to slow and doodling, showing different facets of the band.

2 out of 5 stars Wait for the Remastered version or buy the Golden Road.......2005-05-23

The original CD version of this album is unavailable. And that is a good thing. A new, remastered version has been made, but currently is only available in the boxset The Golden Road. If you don't want to buy that boxset, but want this, wait until the remastered version comes out (don't by this original version used).

Even in the LP version, this was not a great live album, when compared to the Dead's previous live albums (except maybe Steal Your Face). All of the gread Dead live albums brought out something new. They just weren't live retreads of the same material on previous studio albums. Also the sound quality was excellent and the audience noise was edited out, so it sounded as good as a studio recording.

Steering from the path of previous live albums, this album does include much audience noise. There is cheering and screaming in the middles of songs. It isn't as bad as some other groups, but it is still distracting and unnecessary.

About half of the tracks on this album are just retreads of studio material, without anything new or interesting added. They are rather pointless, when the studio versions are better. These include Sampson and Delilah, New Minglewood Blues, Candyman, Loser, Greatest Story Ever Told and Brokedown Palace.

There are some great tracks, that are worth having, like the slowed down version of Friend of the Devil, and the very energetic Fire On the Mountain and Deal. At this time, the band was very tight and energetic. These are fantastic renditions of those songs (although, I have heard even better versions).

A poor job was done putting this album on CD the first time. The track Space was dropped because of time considerations (at that time, the maximum lenghth of a CD was only 74 minutes). On some of the import versions, Space was kept, but Drums was dropped. Also, the reports are that the sound quality was weak on the original CD's.

The remastered CD is much, much better. The sound quality is better, all the tracks are included and there is a bonus CD that is better than the original.

WHY WAS A TRACK DROPPED OFF THE ORIGINAL CD? When the CD was developed, the original target time was 74 minutes. But variation in the bit size and sample speed was allowed, to allow for manufacturing variations. But, the manufacturing is so precise, those sloppy specs are not needed. To get 80 minutes on a CD, manufacturers started using the far side of the limit, with the smallest bitsize and fastest sample rate.

2 out of 5 stars Listen to "Young Team" instead.......2006-11-21

A bit of a letdown. Let me explain. The standout closing song from their full-length debut CD, "Young Team," was "Fear Satan." Yet the five remixes (Mogwai re-mixes it too at the end of the first Pig disc) do not capture the soaring majesty of the original. It rose and fell, crested and ebbed in ways that reminded me of classical crescendos. The remakes here, by comparison, all burble about, but are but faint echoes of their source. The other songs, mainly from YT, that are re-mixed on the first disc fail to grab me; they are all electronic rather than guitar, drums, bass & electronics, so that difference, that subtraction in instrumentation, accounts for the minimal approaches favored by the mixers.

As a long-time My Bloody Valentine fan, the MBV mix, at 16 minutes by far the lengthiest selection on either disc, does remind me of that band's glory days in its hints of tuneful distortion trickled through massive barriers of nearly monolithic sound. It is not bad, but this and the Mogwai mix on disc one being the two passable songs out of thirteen contenders, the ratio's too low to count for much.

When this came out in 1998, I recall liking it more than I do now. Perhaps other groups and other producers have gone beyond what eight years ago sounded fresher than it does today. Mogwai, furthermore, seems to have fallen in most of the 00's into a holding pattern themselves, as their recent "Mr. Beast" rests on past triumphs more than daring adventures.

2 out of 5 stars Kicking mogwai.......2006-03-14

Well this is not a complete disaster, but taking any amazing bands material and playing with them will rarely even do justice to the originals, let alone emulate them..It is nice to see some of their older lo-fi material get a nice cover of sparkling sheen on top with the reinturpeted tracks..Unfortunately it is always the original brilliance of the writing, not the re-worked beat placements, that fans will appreciate..

4 out of 5 stars burning like a log.......2005-03-13

This review is for the second disc only, the Fear Satan remixes. Given that Mogwai bears no trace of humor in any of their original music, it is not surprising that this an extremely artsy bunch of remixes. All the tracks could be described as experimental. I don't know if I'd call any of this "groundbreaking!" or "highly conceptual!" but it's got some pretty interesting music. Most of these aren't really songs at all; they are more accurately described as "sound sculptures", little journeys through texture and mood. It's very rewarding for lovers of ambient music, calling to mind songs by Fripp & Eno and Seefeel. However, in spite of all pretension, there's enough rocking on here to keep it from being awful.

Mogwai remix:
The most striking thing about this remix is its reductiveness. It relies heavily on long sustains of notes and chords and looping samples from the original material. It is slower than the original, with lots of space between notes. The result is extremely ambient. Even when distorted guitar appears at the end of the song, it seems mellow within the context of the remix.

u-ziq remix:
This is the most aggresssive of the remixes. Like many other u-ziq tracks, it has jarring changes in tempo that keep it from being danceable. That's okay though, I only dance to Mogwai when I'm at a Mogwai show and am not afraid to look stupid. The really hyper tempo of the songs main section contrasts well with the two mixes that surround it, but overall it is my least favorite.

Surgeon remix:
Did I say the Mogwai remix used a lot of sustain? Um, the ENTIRE surgeon remix is pretty much just sustaining notes fading in and out, with very subtle effects gradually appearing and disappearing. It is very reminescent of an Autechre track named "Vietrmx21", which is almost entirely made up of just one chord progression repeating infinitely up and down a scale with a lot of reverb and sustain fading in and out. However, this is even simpler than that. A fun track for electronic fans, with a systematic approach to deconstructing a song using effects only.

Kevin Shields remix:
My Bloody Valentine fans, be warned: this does not sound like My Bloody Valentine. This one is the most epic of the remixes, spanning 16 minutes, almost twice as long as the original. I used to hate this remix because I thought there were so many cool parts at the beginning and end, but the middle had an almost unlistenable amount distortion on it; so much distortion that you can hardly hear any of the notes that are being played, it's all just the sound of speaker pop in and out. I can listen to it now, but the distortion still bothers me. However, one highlight is that Kevin Shields is really good at making throbbing percussion and bass lines by looping rock n roll breakbeats. Even though the loop of the percussion repeats ad nauseum without really changing at all, the break that Kevin picked is so good that it doesn't get boring. His remix for Yo La Tengo's "Autumn Sweater" shared the same quality. Also, this remix has a bunch of worthy atmospheric moments and sound textures. Overall, definitely worth listening to.

Gwai on, Wayne. Gwai on, Garth.

5 out of 5 stars So we're flogging a dead horse are we? Oh right, pig sorry!.......2005-01-28

These remixes do a damn good job of the material there is given. From noise workouts ( a la Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine ) to funky workouts ( DJ Q's remix of R U Still Into It ). This remix album has something for everybody. Although depending on how you view remix albums, you'll still be missing out on one of the most addictive albums there are - remix album or not!

4 out of 5 stars Spinning a Dead Pig.......2003-07-02

There is quite a bit of dead weight on the first cd, but the high points are very good. Klute's version of Summer is basically a breakbeat track, but one that is a credit to the genre. Kid Loco's remix of Tracy rocks like a live hiphop instrumental, but it's basically the orignal looped without words and with a pretty funky drum track laid over it. Max Tundra's take on Helicon 2 is worlds apart from the mellowed out original, starting off kind of a little too loud and scary before it goes sailing off into dreamland. The Hood remix of Like Herod is also damn cool. Most other mixes here are pretty good, but at least two get on my nerves so much that I've probably listened to them all the way through only twice since i bought this (about 1 and a half years ago). One thing missing here are vocals, which are already so rare in Mogwai's oeuvre. (I think we to hear the word "change" a few times, but that's it.) The second disc is so slow and pretty that I feel like a zombie in paradise, as if I were suspended in a numbed awe for the 60-or-so minutes of Mogwai Fears Satan, which means that I don't really like it that much, though i definitely "appreciate" it. All the mixes here are very ambitious, but none veer away from the slow-and-subtle structure of the original. It makes for good background music while stoned and watching silent movies (other movies work too) on mute.

5 out of 5 stars Hymn singing as it should be.......2002-01-17

This is a very fine recital drawn from the core of the church and cathedral choir repertoire. Martin Neary proves here (perhaps more convincingly than anyone else) that a good hymn can be just as magical as a through-composed anthem for choir alone, and that the repetition of a single tune over verse after verse need not be a dull experience.

The hymns and tunes selected are indeed among the best-loved works in English church music. "O God, our help in ages past," "Love Divine," "Eternal Father, strong to save," "Be thou my vision," "Guide me, O thou great Redeemer" and the eventide chestnuts "Abide with me" and "The day thou gavest" are all bound to be the most recognisable even to those who are not regular churchgoers. Some of the Victorian composers have immortalised the cream of their talent in such hymns as "The King of Love my shepherd is" and "O thou, who camest from above." Purcell's tune "Westminster Abbey" - extracted from his anthem "O God, thou art my God" and set to the words "Christ is made the sure foundation" - shows how a stroke of inspiration of long ago can survive endless musical change by being adapted and absorbed into hymnody. Another adapted work is Hubert Parry's hymn "O Praise ye the Lord," actually the final part of an extended anthem ("Hear my words, ye people") and is presented on this disc in its original form, making for an interesting and refreshing change to the repetitive verses of the rest of the collection. Completing the programme are settings that fall more definitely outside of the realms of congregational singing: the powerful "Kontakion of the Dead" to an ancient tune and harmonisation from Kiev; the moving Air from County Derry set to the verse "I would be true" for unaccompanied boys voices (as sung by these very choristers at the Funeral of Princess Diana in 1997); Martin Neary's little tune "Studland" written for the blessing "May the Grace of Christ our Saviour;" his lovely arrangement of Sebastian Temple's "Make me a channel of your peace" (also sung at the Diana funeral) is here as well. Each item is a gem in its own right.

In this performance, each gem is polished to a high standard. Contrast is effectively made by the use of subtly different forces for different verses - there is an appropriate use of boisterous tenors and basses in "O worship the King" at the verse "O tell of his might," and a plethora of soul-stirring unaccompanied verses, particularly in "Praise to the Holiest in the Height." (I would challenge anybody to find a more moving moment in hymnody, achieved with such utter simplicity, than the performance of "And in the garden secretly, and on the Cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die" as it is on this disc.) This is not to say that Martin Baker's accompaniments are not another wonderful element in the performance: for instance, his clever doubling of the tune at a low octave in "Who would true valour see" for the words "No lion can him fright; he'll with a giant fight." On the subject of words, every single one is treated with care and attention to its meaning, individually and in context - the ensemble is finely honed and the enunciation is immaculate. Martin Neary draws every ounce of poetical significance from the words in these hymns, making real sense of them and allow them to speak as music, not simply as long lines of verse to get through as quickly as possible (which is often the problem arising with hymn singing in many churches today). As a finishing touch, several hymns have descants and alternative harmonisations, many of them supplied by Neary, who knows how to make them effective, stunning and highly original. An ensemble of trumpets and drums joins the Abbey Choir and organ for the performance of "All people that on earth do dwell" in the festive arrangement by Vaughan Williams - this is as stirring as many of the other hymns are moving.

This collection is a sample of hymnody that (in my humble opinion) far outweighs others I have encountered. There's a certain joy in listening to these performances - a joy that somehow remains fresh on repeated hearings. An inspired and inspirational programme: most warmly recommended!

    4 out of 5 stars A wonderfully tight ball of post-punk tension.......2006-08-09

Snaking through the same grimy halls previously tread by the Fall, Moonshake, "Metal Box"-era PiL and James Plotkin's Flux project (see the tense, angular opener, "Essence of Cessna"), Prolapse's third U.S. album (and fourth overall) emerges as more than just a linkage of post-punk influences. Less angular than 1996's "Backsaturday," more sexy than 1998's "The Italian Flag," "Ghosts of Dead Aeroplanes" finds the Leicester, England, group in a somewhat dubbed-out, clearly late-'90s mode, their tension, sensuality and textural beauty both stretched out and magnified. Of course the old Prolapse are still banging away here (the lengthy, riotous "Cylinders V12 Beats Cylinders 8"), as are the trademark twin vocals of Mick Derrick (the snotty one) and Linda Steelyard (the emotionally detached one). While Derrick snorts and rants over tracks like "One Illness" and the cyclonic "Government of Spain," Steelyard uses her composure as counterpoint. Meanwhile the music whirls and seethes around the unlikely pair, its G (as in "groove") Force keeping them trapped together in the hurricane's eye. Not only is the resulting tension sexual; it's personal, political ("Spain"), and uncomfortably psychological ("After After").

5 out of 5 stars A great record to jump around to and rant along with........2000-11-05

Pretend there's a dark and vibrant underground scene exploding with energy. Guitars haven't sounded this good in a while. PIL and the Fall of course, but it's more up to date than that and there's a strong undercurrent of spaced out dissonant hypnotic sound pinning the whole thing down and so satisfying. Good artistry, w/smart and fascinating lyrics from both the lovely female voice and the male vocals all prickly scottish rant elevated to mantra like incantations sounding pretty fookin close to classic making me wish Mark E. Smith could still do this sorta thing. I cannot stop listening to this especially on me bleedin headphones. When they coming round here yo?

    5 out of 5 stars refreshingly energetic.......2000-05-17

Prolapse has the stuff... The sugarcubes had it, and the Pixies had it. Now it's Prolapse in the spotlight of inovation, moving male and female vocals, juxtaposed lyrics, and contrasting emotions. Keep your ears and mind open and Prolapse will bless you. You may not realize their genius at first listen, but once Prolapse's sound wins your favor you'll never want to part with this or any of their albums.

4 out of 5 stars Ladies and Gentlemen, we are leaving this place..........2000-03-04

Prolapse' sound (to me) is unmatched. Production wise, this is a headphones album all the way. They have been compared to Stereolab, Spirtiualized, and The Fall as well as other experimental musicians. You have to listen to the clips on this page to understand that this is not music for everyone (and I know it took me several listens to get 6 out of 8 songs in my listening capabilities. "adiabatic", "after after", "government of spain", "one illness", "essence of cessna" are outrageously composed yet mildly bizzare works of art... needed at least a couple more tracks as a teaser. Very psychedlic/electronic/rock album.

    4 out of 5 stars a journey, no doubt.......2007-03-12

the high points on this cd (there's maybe a half-dozen of them) easily outshine the best moments of rollerskate skinny's best moment (horsedrawn wishes)...equally diverse, but at 15 tracks, there's clearly some filler here. it's likely a circus, brian wilson is there. there's an (over?)abundance of lalalas and the like, but it's all in good fun.

    5 out of 5 stars Redemption.......2001-01-18

This is a beautiful psychadelic album. Lush layering and abstract super-creative melodies. HorseDrawn Wishes was a soundtrack to my life for a while-this album has the same sense of passion and validity. Great orchestrations. Inspiring lyrics. Bravo!!

    5 out of 5 stars do yourself a favour..........2000-02-23

really excellent album, BEWARE: if you liked rollerskate skinny, prepare yourself for something a little different (but just as tasty). NICE ONE KEN!

    3 out of 5 stars A bit uneven.......1999-12-21

This has some definite highs and some definite lows. There are some great tracks on this disc, including 'Racing Daylight', which has this fabulous retro 80s sound, reminiscent perhaps of Echo & The Bunnymen, or Modern English. But other songs seem to just wander out into the weeds and get lost...with too many lines that just go 'la la la, la la la' for my taste (I'll admit, a pet peeve of mine - c'mon folks, at least write some lyrics if you're going to sing, and save the la la la for Christmas carols). I agree with other reviewers that the vocals sound a bit bono-esque. Not that this is necessarily a good nor a bad thing.

4 out of 5 stars Bono meets Echo in a home recording studio?.......1999-10-22

Lamenting the loss of the great London-Irish band Rollerskate Skinny (whose two albums, Shoulder Voices and Horsedrawn Wishes, if combined and edited into one cd with the best 12 songs would be one of my desert island discs), here's my remedy. Dubliner Ken Griffin, now solo from RS, emigrates to NYC and has his own album to do. While his former bandmate Jimi Shields (brother of Kevin of My Bloody Valentine) develops the thicker RS sound with his dazzling neo-psych band Lotus Crown, Griffin sticks to a sparser style. Griffin's voice, shorn of his RS bandmates' more eccentric backing, heightens the U2/Echo comparisons. Not that KG's exactly straightforward. His talent lies in twists and turns. Incorporating touches of hip-hop, rap, and electronica into the r-and-r mix, the sound can be a bit too spare in places. As if he imitates Bono's vox and released his backing-track home demos. Yet, by the time the album spins round to Layabout Superstars, he captures the lush poetry of RS while striving to move forward into a more contemporary vibe. I wish the production could've benefitted from a bigger budget and a denser texture, but nonetheless, in its own wistful vocals and meditative lyrics, it shows that KG's ready to keep channelling his own musical muse.

This is not your typical copulation of sacred classical music however it covers an eclectic selection of choirs and monasteries from east to west. Lots of Gregorian Chants balanced with treatises for pipe organ and other medieval and renaissance chorus. I highly recommend it whether you are in the mood for spiritual contemplation or just want to listen to something classicaly religious.
