Chet Atkins recorded way too often, in way too many dubious contexts; wanting to showcase the depth and breadth of his playing, he instead buried himself. So what's a fan to do? This two-disc set is beautifully programmed, keeping all emphasis on Chet himself, from the delicate drive of 1947's "Canned Heat" to the four-guitar interplay of 1978's "Carolina Shout." Though he recorded frequently over the years with A-list country sidemen under various names, his most enduring work remains the scintillating sides with guitarist Homer Haynes and mandolinist Jethro Burns (and you thought they were just a novelty act). There's also a rare rollicking reading of "Dig These Blues." And any set that follows the sweet timing of "Guitars on Parade" with the high-stepping "Bells of Saint Mary's" and the piercing "Country Gentleman" is indeed irrefutable testimonial to a guitarist who often hid his own virtues. This is the one Atkins album you really need to own. --John Morthland

Velvet Glove.......2007-05-20
I finally discovered iTunes on my new MAC...and downloaded this today.
Is this a steel string right? Yeah babe it is... I'm seriously infatuated with listening to Chet Atkins this evening, Balling the Jack right now looking forward to hearing the Black Mountain Rag in a second. Who needs to hear me extol his playing ability? Who needs my opinion on his jazz undertones, on the way he plays... He makes a mockery of anyone foolish enough to forget how terrific a player he is...Take Five, lovely. Go man..gotta think on the Tennessee tones right now from my family roots I'm listening large tonight. And it's funny I'll tell you I can hear in this Centipede Boogie that ukulele he started with long ago and my dad loved so much. It's in there, trust me.
Tell me these are my roots, please...please...excuse me a second gotta bring this one on home no, up a little bit here to stomp it. Ah..that's right..smooth sound. Gliding. Cleanest player I ever heard. Blue Angel...let me pull myself together.Dig These Blues...And down here to the the Memphis Blues...listen to that awhile...gotta go tap around the kitchen table get me some sugar now. ...so... sweet.Ah babe.
Do you want to know the way I like to think about my life in West Virginia? The good times, arts fairs, the culture, the bluegrass, people, seeing friend Thelma in my mind, the schools, the mourning mist and the sweat of the sticky summer, the cranberry bogs, the coal tipples, the little ones waiting for your time, the cookin, the jams, jellies, four H, the days mowing the yard, times jumping over the violets, finding a boxturtle or indigo bunting? Well, now, listen to Chet tell you my life. Let him glide fingers, take you right away into a country girls' dreams of art, culture, meanings and metaphors set in the hills and Appalachian springs. It's here you'll find me. jazz and all...I'm here. Listen. My past is here. Mountain melody..
Looking for a good gift, this would make anyones day, beautiful compilation. Smooth, clean, exquisite. i just wish I was sitting in a room filled with hammered ddulcimers taking on playing along...right now. Ah...just have to settle for resting my head or jumping up with my son.
Play it baby.
"Years from now, after I'm gone someone will listen to what I've done and know I was here. They may not know or care who I was, but they'll hear my guitars speaking for me."
Atkins
Stellar collection from the greatest guitarist ever.......2006-02-20
No self respecting guitar player should be without Chet Atkins in his or her collection. Atkins' virtuosity, taste and almost incomprehensible range of playing are simply unparalled.
"The RCA Years" is a superb compilation of his work starting in 1947 with "Canned Heat" and follows through to the late '70's before Chet jumped ship to Columbia to pursue a more jazzy path than RCA was willing to allow.
Every track in this 50 song double CD is indispensible. We hear shred guitar before the term and the hot shots of the 80's, including Vai and Satriani were even born. Never hokey, Atkins was a living breathing slice of American music history. Rock and roll, bluegrass, country, blues and jazz are blended together in a musical soup that astonishes the listener, usually in the space of a single song.
The accompanying booklet is interesting, along with early photos of the great man. It's the best place to start for the serious Atkins fan and beginner alike, and damn hard to beat, although his "Essential" CD's are good company. Guitarists, pay your dues today.
great stuff from a great guitar player.......2005-10-15
Chet Atkins was truly a great musician, although he recorded a lot of crap over the years. This CD showcases his guitar talent, ranging from 1947-1978. Not every song is a classic, but there are some truly good ones here, it will open up your eyes a lot.
Excellent sampler of the first 30 years of Chet's career..........2004-02-25
I first became a fan of Chet Atkins in 1957, when I was 13. My new brother-in-law played an early LP for me in which Chet picked (and sang) a song about the Titanic. That tune's not included in these two hours, but one early Chet vocal is on here, just to show us why we don't need more of his voice. His artistic genius was in the picking, and this collection shows his versatility quite well. One criticism of Chet is that he recorded too much, and perhaps that is true, but after all, that was his job. Not every LP was ground-breaking, and a lot of Chet's work falls into the "easy listening" or "good background music" category, including some tracks on this set. But there was so much more to the man than those quiet recordings. He did jazz, pop, country/pop, traditional country, rock and roll, semi-classical---alone and with small groups, in duets and with orchestras. I was lucky enough to see Chet in person twice. Once was a concert, which included Boots Randolph on sax and Floyd Cramer on piano, but Chet was clearly the centerpiece. The other occasion was really special. In Nashville in 1968 I was in the audience for a recording session Chet produced, featuring country comedians (and superb instrumentalists) Homer and Jethro. One of the session musicians was Jerry Reed, later to become a star himself. Chet did not play, as I recall--- he supervised, and teased, and conducted, and solved problems. He was RCA's top man in Nashville at the time, and it was fascinating to watch him work. The result was released on LP as "Homer and Jethro Live at Vanderbilt University" but sadly has not been issued on CD. My applause is probably on it, and I'd like to own a copy. I knew who Homer and Jethro were because my parents had owned an earlier album of theirs, but I did not know at the time how respected they were as artists, or that their friendship with Chet went back 20 years. Since becoming a Chet fan in '57, I bought a handful of his own records over the years, but he made far too many for any one guy to own them all. This double CD set is welcome in my home as a tribute to a great guitarist and recording executive. If you are already a fan, it is a worthy addition. If you are new to Chet, I'd say this is essential. He helped make the guitar more prominent in both country and rock in his heyday during the '50's, and he helped make Nashville famous and country music more mainstream in the '60's. Many think the latter transformation was a mixed blessing, but overall Chet Atkins is a towering figure in American popular music, and this collection proves it.
Nashville Cat.......2003-02-18
This is a great album. As point of departure I am a guitarist with eclectic tastes, and more interested in Chet for his technical and arrangeing abilitites than for the selections of tunes. That being said, this is my fifth or sixth Chester CD and it is interesting, and there are always great tunes on every album.
As with so many guitarists, such as Clapton and Page, the RCA collection showcases Chet's evolution from frantic virtuoso (with flaming L7 in tow) into a rounded, melodic interpretative artist.
The CD disc 1 is early stuff, with a more jazzy hillbilly feel-very cool, but a bit lacking in the fidelity department as befits the era. The disc 2 is some later stuff and it is extraordinary and worth the entire set price-there are some jazz tunes which are Chet at this best. This is a more sophisticated look into Chet and for the neophite not a bad first choice (although the best Chet sampler, IMHO, is Master and his Music). For those who really enjoy Chester and wish to visit his roots this is a good CD and bears the price.

Sit Down and Meet Blind Joe Death.......2007-02-14
Its snowing hard outside and I have the stereo on,not too loud.As I try to decide how to write this review, turning it over and over in my head I get visions of times gone past when you had to prove how good you were a song at a time, one person at a time. One man,one guitar.....John Fahey posesses a guitar playing style influenced by many but written, arranged and performed like no other person on this planet.
Covering recording sessions from Joe Bussards basement studio in 59 thru to 63-64 and 67 in Berkley, this disc is what that vision from the past and one extraordinary guitarist capable of lyrical songs with no words and sounds new to all but some can achieve - the sound called American Primitive.
On the 78`s of yesterday were all the ingredients needed to provoke the feelings needed to create this great music we`re talking about.Mr. Fahey will play for you and you will listen....you say you don`t like the sounds of those scratchy records then you should be afraid of someone on par with anyone from the history of modern music recorded cleanly and performances equal to any human beings in this or any world.
Enough talking has been done...buy it and listen for yourself and marvel at the talents of this great man.
Great, but missing a great track.......2007-02-08
While it's true that both the 1959 version and the 1967 version of BLIND JOE DEATH are contained on this CD, the disc is missing the 1967 version of "The Transcendental Waterfall." While that is certainly no reason not to buy this disc, buyer should beware that this track is missing. In my opinion, this missing track smokes the 10-minute version that was included on this reissue. This missing track is why I did not give this disc five stars. But get the disc anyway; it's still worth your time and money.
For more than just guitar lovers!.......2006-11-29
This album is a great combo of some of Fahey's early material. In many ways, it's a perfect place to start if you're just getting into Fahey--not only is it chronologically (kind of) his first release (he re-recorded the album multiple times), but it also finds the guitarist at an earlier stage in his signature guitar technique--he basically innovated an idiosyncratic technique all his own, and Blind Joe Death finds him first finding his own [guitar] voice.
This album includes the '64 and '67 versions of Blind Joe Death, as well as a bonus track or two from the very old and less quality-recorded original. Like several of Fahey's CD reissues, this one's a great bargain, since you get both versions on one CD which can be found pretty cheap on alternate sellers here at Amazon. Unlike a lot of artists, having 2 versions of most every one of these songs is actually pretty awesome, since you can audibly hear the progress Fahey makes in his technique, recording quality, and you get a better idea of the melodic and compositional points the composer/performer is trying to get across.
Fahey's style is certainly very thumb-heavy (detractors are annoyed by this and sometimes call it ham-fisted), but it really doesn't bother me. Sure there are some more technically-diverse fingerstyle guitarists out there, but if you listen closely, you'll realize that Fahey is actually probably just as technically skilled as any other guitarist, but he makes a choice to play the way he plays. Why? It's folk and blues--it's not about playing as fast as you can and showing off, it's about feel, emotion, and simple but memorable melodies. That said, this album is chock full of all that stuff, especially melodies that you can't get out of your head after hearing them a couple times. Songs like "Poor Boy Long Ways From Home" and the lilting "Sligo River Blues" show that Fahey can play blues like no other, providing haunting melodies but also pushing the genre's structure and harmony with unconventional changes.
If you're not already a fan of solo guitar, don't be afraid of this music! I had my doubts too when first purchasing an album with only one instrument, but Fahey's music really does provide listeners with plenty to chew on, plenty to keep you engaged, and it's interesting enough that you won't miss a vocalist or accompaniment at all. Like the title of this review says, you don't have to already love solo guitar to enjoy this album--it should be interesting and worthwhile to fans of folk, blues and even rock who are willing to take a chance on some music they might not have otherwise tried. Once you get into this album, I'd recommend checking out "Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes" to hear what Fahey's style blossomed into in its later incarnations. Enjoy!
Essential music for guitar lovers. .......2006-03-07
Rather than trying to recap or extend the effusive comments of other Fahey reviewers, I'll simply say that I've loved this album (1967 version) since I first heard it about 1970. And I love it still. This is music to relax the mind: you can float on it, ride on it, travel with it, and keep it close by to your heart and inner ear forever. And now this new CD issue is really a treat, because the listener can hear both versions Fahey recorded, the one from 1959 and the (more familiar) one from 1967. Essential listening. "Must have" music.
Blind Joe.......2005-08-02
I am totally and completely mezmerized by John Fahey every time I listen to this album. The production is shoddy, and the instrumentation is Fahey's lone guitar, but there is more going on in this sparse setting than on most albums with a full orchestra.
"On doing an evil deed blues" is a slow, creeping start to the album. Things really start to heat up with "poor boy long ways from home", though. This is the song that really inspired me to pursue fingerstyle blues guitar. The song is in open-D tuning, and it really opened up the world of alternate tunings for me. Other standouts include "In Christ there is no East or West", "Desperate Man Blues", "I'm gonna do all I can for my Lord", and "The Transcendental Waterfall".
I recommend this album to any fan of acoustic or blues music. Of course, you've probably already very familiar with it if this is so!!

This is the BEST Christmas collection that I have ever heard. I would like
to purchase 15 more to give as gifts this year; however, it appears that
Decca is out of stock or no longer releasing it. HELP!!
christmas adagios.......2007-01-14
this was one of the best assortment of classical holiday songs that i have ever heard. it contains a marvelous array of the best composers and performers that the world has to offer. if you are a fan of classical music, i think this cd will be a positive addition to your music collection
Nice Background for the Holidays.......2007-01-11
Beautiful Adagios and a rich selection for the price. Audio travels to Vienna, London, Cambridge etc
One of my very top 5 favorite holiday albums!.......2005-11-19
What a delightful surprise this 2 disc album was and I'm not a big fan of Christmas music. I loved all the selections and felt they were well performed. This is a true "must have" for any Christmas collection. Superior to many other compliations on the market. This one is a keeper! It is the one album I'll pick first to listen to after Thanksgiving.
Wonderful POCOCAT?.......2005-07-16
Great CD. The reviewer who calls him/herself POCOCAT says he/she is an opera singer. Wonder how much work an uninformed singer gets?
A "fast spinning" vibrato,as you describe Ms. Price, is not the same as a wide vibrato. The former is a speed issue, the latter a width issue. Therefore, 4 variables exist: fast, slow, wide, slim. Thus, 4 types of voice exist: fast/wide, fast/slim, slow/wide, and slow/slim. Most often a singer leans toward fast/slim or slow/wide, in varying degrees. A matter of taste, yes, but learn more about the voice before you expound.

Bridging Generations.......2003-09-13
Les Paul was far ahead of his time with guitar technology, plus he could play.
For older generations, How High The Moon is nostalgia. For younger generations, it's novelty power pop with some rad guitar.
There are many tracks novelty fans will love. The first time I heard the track, "Lover", I thought my CD player was set on 45! Many tracks feature high-speed tape playback tricks made most famous by the Chipmunks. Paul's use of studio tricks is enjoyable without becoming annoying (like the Chipmunks).
The single CD has good, short liner notes. For fans of Novelty, Traditional Pre-rock Pop, Torch Singers.

Product Description
Classical music is hot. In fact, it is probably the biggest story of the l990s in the recording industry. Classical crossover hits like Nigel Kennedy's recording of Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons', Henryk Gorecki's 'Symphony no. 3', the Gregorian Chant album by the monks of Silo, and Michael Nyman's score for the Jane Campion film 'The Piano' - to name just a few - have broken out of classical music's traditional bounds and hit the pop charts. Suddenly, a classical recording that sells 10,000 units is no longer pushing the envelope; today's top classical releases are reaching sales heights formerly reserved for pop icons like Madonna and the Rolling Stones. This stunning turnaround in classical music's marketing power did not come out of nowhere, though. Celestial Harmonies helped set the stage for it with its Adagio (Complete Edition) (19908-2) series. Since 1981, long before the current interest in classical music began, Celestial Harmonies' compilations have been used worldwide for relaxation, meditation and even music therapy. And in a stunning reversal of music industry rules, absolutely no advertising or promotion was needed to achieve substantial sales figures. And while the rest of the classical world scurries around looking for the next big hit, Celestial Harmonies has released an updated digital version of an already proven winner: The Adagio series, a total of seven double-CDs. With sales of over 300,000 units in the past decade, the reason for the series' success is no mystery. As modern life has become increasingly complex and stressful, listeners have turned to music as a source of relief - especially the timeless, contemplative sounds of classical music. It seems that as the pace of our lives gets progressively faster, the music that many listeners are seeking is increasingly slow. The Adagio series, presents over seventeen hours of the world's finest slow music, making it the largest such collection anywhere. Adagio I includes the famous 'Air' from
Customer Reviews:
Excellent digital recording.......2003-03-18
I realize that classical music is something were there is a range of conesuirship, and I represent perhaps the lowest tier of appreciators. In my wholly uniformed opinion, "Adagio I" is an excellent classic music collection, containing well-executed pieces ranging from a few instruments to full orchestral ensembles, representing a variety of composers. The digital recording is remarkable, and an unexpectedly full sound comes from the CD. The 2 1/2 length is nice, split onto two disks.
My favorite pieces are the justifiably famous "Suite No.3 In D Major: Air" and the goose-bump inducing "Concierto De Aranjuez: Adagio." The style of the music is mostly soft, and relaxing but there are thrilling moments peppered in. The violin and the guitar have wooed me to contentment many evenings, and do so know as I am writing this review. An enjoyable CD set.

Album Description
The CD is an amazing blend of Vic Flick's score (yes, guitarist of "The James Bond Theme"!!) with the hottest SPY-FI, MOD, and ORGAN bands around to today. An international affair including The Link Quartet (Italy), The Special Agents (England), The Men From S.P.E.C.T.R.E. (Switzerland), The Yards (USA) and Mike Painter & The Family Shakers (Italy). Also included, as a bonus is the never-before-released Wilson Chance title song "Take A Chance", breathtakingly sung by Linda Jackson and performed by Vic Flick and Les Hurdle.
