Nineteen ninety-eight: The same year he dances with Soy Bomb at the Grammys, his record label finally issues Bob Dylan's ultimate live document. A classic case of not giving the audience what they want but what they need, Mr. Dylan's oft-bootlegged 1966 gig begins with lovely and supple folk that foreshadows folk music's turn from protest song to introspection. The album's true highlight is the legendarily ill received and rocked-out electric set, with Dylan backed by members of the Band. There are too many perfect, on-fire guitar solos by Robbie Robertson to count, and Dylan himself responds to the audience's angry bewilderment with equal parts menace, grace, and brilliance. --Mike McGonigal
Amazon.com essential recording
The greatest live recording in rock & roll history was--officially, at least--buried in the vaults of Columbia Records for more than a quarter of a century. But no more: Live 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert has surfaced on two discs mixed and mastered from three-track source tapes that put the myriad pirated recordings to shame. More important, Live 1966 documents a momentous artistic showdown between a willful, inflamed, and utterly fearless performer and his headstrong core following. The Dylan of the mid '60s had made the leap from socially conscious voice of his generation to surrealistic electric poet, a transformation that was met with contempt by a vocal element of his audience. The most telling moment of the recording centers on the standoff: A folk zealot in the audience shouts, "Judas!" earning cheers from the contentious crowd. Dylan responds by snarling, "I don't believe you. You're a liar," then turns to his group, the Hawks (soon to become the Band), and, as the intro to "Like a Rolling Stone" takes shape, commands, "Play loud!" A crucial moment and, time has demonstrated, the correct call. --Steven Stolder

BEAUTIFUL.......2007-07-18
"She's got everything she needs, she's an artist she don't look back". This recordings got everything YOU need, don't look back. Dylan's recording consistency during this period is unsurpassed by any artist ever. We all know his genius and the 60s is where his music was established and perfected beyond the capabilities of what you would think is humanly possible. This bootleg is a diamond among gems. Two reasons-
a-Dylan's energy and creativity were peaking on even par during this period.
b-Dylan notoriously experimented with his vocals throughout his career, on this recording his experimentation hit perfection.
I own most of Dylan's material, this is the best and by far the most played. I could go in depth regarding this album but most reviews have already done the job. As a hard core Dylan fan I just had to put in my ten cents. One word summary-BEAUTIFUL
Bob Dylan: 1966 Royal Albert Hall.......2007-07-06
I resisted buying this CD for a long time, because I have a bad habit of assuming that overhype = bad. In reality, of course, overhype usually indicates that something is good, and worthy of hype, just not so MUCH hype. I finally bought it, mainly because it was one of the last real holes in my Dylan collection. I never, ever expected it to be a 5-star CD.
But it is. The whole audience/Dylan interaction is every bit as fascinating as its legendary status suggests. In fact, it's all so perfect, it's hard to believe it wasn't planned: the "Judas" cat-call comes right before the very last song; and what is the last song? Only the all-time greatest Dylan classic, "Like a Rolling Stone." Dylan's response, too, is great. It's not witty at all--in fact, it reveals that the "Judas" accusation really caught him off guard. He is silent for about 10 seconds, just keeps on fingerpicking the intro to the song, and then he leans into the microphone and says in an even tone, "I don't believe you." It seems like he had to spend about 10 seconds to even convince HIMSELF that the Judas charge wasn't true! Then he delivers his verdict very calmly. But after thinking about it for another five seconds or so, he becomes more self-assured, and yells, "You're a LIAR!" People think of this concert as a defining moment for the Cult of Dylan, but when you listen to it, it seems like it was really a defining moment for Dylan himself. He may have decided, on that very stage, that he would never turn back from his rock experiment. He was plugged in for good.
So, if you are buying this set for the novelty factor, you'll get you're money's worth. However, the first disc--the acoustic set--is a real treasure, probably even the better of the two discs. I don't own much live Dylan, so I can't compare to other concerts, but in comparison to the studio versions this stuff is really great. I mean, solo acoustic versions of Blonde on Blonde songs sounds awesome, but it is even awesomer than you think. "Just LIke a Woman" and "Visions of Johanna," in particular, are way better here than on the original albums they came from.
All in all, despite my original expectations, this is a 5-star CD. Get it soon.
Must have.......2007-06-09
This is a must have for anyone interested in rock and roll hisotry. Someone earlier said it's not worth listening to multipule times, but I disagree. This is one of my most played CDs ever, every track being a great version of the original. "Like a Rolling Stone" might be even better live, with so much energy from Dylan and the band. Any Dylan fan will love this!
Monumental.......2007-05-04
A Dylan fan is occasionally asked what album they would recommend to someone who is interested but not yet sold on Dylan. With 40+ albums representing a wide range of work it is almost impossible to limit a choice to one album.
But this -- more so than any studio album may be the place to start. You get some of the highlights of his 60's legendary trilogy (HWY61, Brining It All Back Home and Blonde on Blonde). This is Dylan at his absolute peak. He's done other phenomenal work -- but nowhere else is this so clearly heard as in the two sets that make up this concert.
This is arguably one of the greatest single act concerts in the history of rock and roll. It is also an important milestone in the history of one of rock's and culture's more important contributors in the last half a century.
Bob Dylan at his best........2007-03-17
Not only is this a great live album, but it's also a slice of Rock and Roll history.
The first disc is Dylan, acoustic guitar, and harmonica. It's classic folk era Dylan.
The second disc is Dylan backed by the Hawks (later known as the Band).
There was a major backlash by folk music fans, because they didn't want to hear Dylan with electric gutars and drums.
SOme of the songs are booed and one fans even calls Dylan "Judas", which Dylan responds to by finishing the concert by having the Hawks play "Like a Rolling Stone" "f*cking loud".

The brooding Bob Dylan of the 1966 live collection in the Dylan bootleg series gave way to an even more hooded character on the second live bootleg album from 1974. Which makes the jump back to a younger Dylan in this set all the more jarring. Here is Dylan as an eager-to-please 23 year old with nothing between him and his worshippers but a guitar, a harmonica, and, for four songs, his lover, Joan Baez. In marked contrast to the acerbic electric Dylan of the mid-'60s and the tight-lipped living legend of the mid-'70s, here is Dylan as entertainer. Joking and bantering with the crowd, Dylan deals up some favorites ("The Times They Are A-Changin'," "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"), but is already shedding his earnest folkie persona; imagine another artist a mere two years into his career declining to perform a hit on the scale of "Blowin' in the Wind." But Dylan was moving fast. Having completed the last all-acoustic collection of his early years three months before the Philharmonic concert, he would record the half-electric/half-acoustic Bringing It All Back Home three months later. Three of the four acoustic songs from that album are presented here, as are a handful of then-unreleased songs, including "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues," "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" (which was soon given a rock arrangement), and a protest-period remnant, "Who Killed Davey Moore?" Had Concert at the Philharmonic Hall appeared the year it was recorded, it would been seen as a respite for folk fans to catch their collective breath before Dylan reappeared in his rock & roll Rimbaud guise. Heard for the first time decades later, it's simply a testament of his gifts as a showman and songwriter. --Steven Stolder

Another golden Bobby D .......2007-05-07
This is THE Bob Dylan that I cherish - if you really dig some of the eariler, folksy "Times they are a changin" Bob Dylan then this is a great album for you.
The duets with Joan are an added bonus - with a bit of Dylan's wit and humor showing through. We are also treated with a (small) amount of stage banter from Dylan - something which was regretably absent when I saw him in 2003 in concert.
It;s Life and Life Only.......2005-10-12
For me Dylan was always there but I didn't get it. I mean Johnny Cash told me that Bob Dyaln was a great song writer, But I just never got what all the Dylan fuss was about.
Then I check out this cd.
Now I get it. Man do I get it.
"Hope I Never Have to Make a Living".......2005-09-21
This late in Bob Dylan's career, it seems that Colombia is content to release (and profit from) a perennial bootleg album. For diehard fans there are reasons to buy and cherish all of these, not all of them healthy. For your casual fan however, some releases are better than others.
Unlike the other releases, Vol. 6 lacks a distinctive sound that made the other volumes so engaging. First, there was Vol. 1-3 (one release). This three-disc set blazed the trail by making available live and unreleased cuts that spanned Bob's entire career; these discs reveal just how deep Dylan's musical veins run. Vol. 4, The Royal Albert Hall Concert, is essential because it captures Dylan at the height of his creativity in 1966. These two discs pack in an otherworldly, heroine-fueled, Rimbauld-esque vision that is still shattering rock and roll music today. One can feel in these performances the psychological tension (created in part from the times, but more from an artist in the process of shedding skins faster than he can grow into new ones). Vol. 5, The Rolling Thunder Revue, also captures another pivotal era in Dylan's career, this time that of a thirty-something icon's last stab at youth. Again, there is an intensity to the performances, to his voice, to the rolicking play of talented musicians.
Lastly we arrive at this collection, the Halloween Concert. What does it lack? For one, passion. The performances feel forced. Dylan is shaking off the albatross of being a "protest singer," and about to embrace (lyrically) the subjective and personal. When we do get these newer songs, like "It's all Right Ma" and "Gates of Eden" the listener feels this intensity. But the older songs, wich make up most of the set, are not performed with much passion or conviction. Dylan's voice whines and sounds distracted. The short set performed with Joan Baez is particularly disappointing, as all sets with her were. Joan, for all her talents as a singer, stands in too much contrast to Dylan's ideosyncratic voice. Song birds are beautiful and bull frog croaks are beautiful -- but not on top of one another. You can understand, listening to their shaky duets here, why in a matter of weeks Dylan would not allow her with him on the stage anymore.
Perhaps the most interesting aspects of this album are Dylan's monologues and dialogues with audience members between songs. He giggles and bandies absurd sentences, sounding very childish in the process, cannabis induced of course. He plays games, at one point playing the same chords over and over, pretending as though he has forgotten the first words to the song.
For an all acoustic concert Columbia would have been wiser to release something from 1963, a time when Dylan still felt connected to the songs we was performing. Here he spends too much time on material he'd rather leave behind. One exception it his rendition of "A Hard Rains a Gonna Fall," certainly the most intense cut on the record.
All in all, my intention is not to disparage this recording. After all, it is a complete Bob Dylan concert recorded during his hey-day. But considering the wealth of other material available, the previous bootlegs should be purchased before this one. That being stated, for fanatics like me, it is still a must, and beats the pants off "Knocked Out and Loaded" and "Down in the Groove," two albums only a mother could love.
Terrific early Dylan.......2005-01-12
Terrific, eh? Four stars, eh? Yes, I know, Dylan-philes everywhere are already seeing me in hell, but I'm just trying to be fair and balanced. So sue me.
Another legendary Bob Dylan-concert which has been available as a bootleg for decades, the so-called "Halloween Concert" is not quite as accessible (or essential) as "Bootleg Series" volumes 4 and 5, the 1966 and 1975 concerts.
This is strictly acoustic material, just Bob Dylan, his guitar and his harmonica rack, and not everybody who like band-backed Dylan enjoy his earliest solo stuff. And while there are plenty of warm, wonderful performances here, there are also a couple of performances, including an 11-minute "It's Alright Ma", which are mostly for diehards.
But if you're seriously interested in the acoustic Bob Dylan, this concert is a must-have. The sound is spectacular, wonderfully realistic and immediate, and the transfer is extremely clean. The packaging is lavish, featuring a fine essay, numerous photos, and discographical information, just like the previous issues in this series. And there are some truly stellar performances here...104 minutes of music, including a wonderful, sensitive performance of "The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll", an acidic "With God On Our Side", and a lovely, melodic "If You Gotta Go, Go Now (Or Else You Gotta Stay All Night)".
Joan Baez guests on four songs on disc two. Dylan and her fool around on an enjoyable "Mama, You've Been On My Mind", and Baez sings a thoroughly beautiful "Silver Dagger" which is worth the entire second disc.
There are protest songs here, alongside "talking blues", folk, love songs, and humorous narratives. Great renditions of "Spanish Harlem Indident", "Mr Tambourine Man", "To Ramona", "The Times They Are A-Changin'", the definitive solo performance of "I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)"...
And Dylan himself is is high spirits, relaxed, friendly and funny.
This is a must-have for fans of Dylan's acoustic period, and even those who already own the bootleg should consider replacing it. To me, these performances are often better than the solo numbers on the 1966 album, and several of them are equal to the magnificent acoustic songs on "Live 1975".
4 1/2 stars. Highly recommended.

One of the many oddities of Bob Dylan's long and unruly career has been the rather cursory recording treatment given his stint as ringleader of the Rolling Thunder Revue. It's a shortcoming that's rectified with the release of Live 1975. Prior to the appearance of this two-disc collection, Rolling Thunder's eclectic road show was chronicled only in the infrequently screened, Dylan-directed Renaldo & Clara film and the bafflingly brief and one-note 1976 live set, Hard Rain. In contrast to its predecessor, this set, culled from four appearances made in November and December of '75, captures the breadth and subtleties of Dylan's Rolling Thunder performances. "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You," formerly a coda from Nashville Skyline, is given a rather incongruous bite here, while "It Ain't Me, Babe" is colored brightly by multi-instrumentalist David Mansfield along with erstwhile David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson, the sparkplug of the gratifyingly ragtag group that coalesced on short notice. Solo acoustic performances weave through caterwauling full-band treatments of songs old ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll) and new ("Hurricane" and four other selections from Desire, which wouldn't hit the racks until early '76). While the contributions of a number of caravan cohorts and guests are left out, Joan Baez shares the spotlight with Dylan on four numbers, most notably on the rarity "Mama, You Been on My Mind" and the traditional "The Water Is Wide." But despite its cavalcade trappings, it was Dylan's show, and this collection demonstrates finally just how close to his '60s peak the '70s Dylan was. --Steven Stolder

Dylan is king!.......2007-03-09
These discs have been in my cd player since I purchased them a month ago. Dylan's painted face allows him to be more diverse. It has songs that feature just Dylan and his guitar and others with his stellar band. For any Dylan fan interested in the bootleg series, this is a great starting point. I have several others in teh bootleg series, but few are as fun as this one. He just rocks!
perhaps lower expectations are in order.......2007-02-15
Some of you are not going to like this review, but buyers will need some candor here. Dylan really is great, and his often great work in the 1970s is generally underappreciated. But this live set is not the place to learn to love Dylan. If you're curious about this title, my recommendation is go pick up his studio recordings of the mid- to late-1970s, beginning with the remastered titles. These are lovely, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes groovy, and often superb. If you already have these, then, if you choose to get this title, you might set your expectations a little lower.
The main problem with Live 1975, as a reviewer below notes, is the singing--or, as one might better say, the bellowing. Dylan has one of rock's great voices and in his studio recordings, including his studio recordings of the 1970s, he sings with astounding emotional authority (where does he get that, one wonders--how does anyone get that?!). In these Live 1975 tracks, however, Dylan is out of voice, bellowing either to be heard or else to "voluminate" in lieu of giving a more emotionally nuanced vocal performance. This is not an uncommon failing of concert recordings, but the present case is quite pronounced and I agree with the reviewer below that it seriously taints the enjoyment of these disks.
I may as well go on to note that the sound of the band is quite dense here. I think it's not a performance problem or an engineering problem, but one of arrangement: there are too many instruments crowding the middle range, so it sounds a bit like an undifferentiated wall of sound. Again, rather characteristic of the 1970s live sound, but rarely the case with Dylan's studio recordings.
In short, if you're curious about Dylan in the 1970s, there are better places to look. My favorite of the Live albums is the 1964 one.
This album rocks!.......2007-01-18
Without a doubt one of Dylans best recordings. I was blown away hearing this for the first time, and the twentieth for that matter. This album was just recently released and is a must have for any Dylan fan. If you're looking for a gift for a Dylan fan this is it. Most fans have the popular titles, Blood on the Tracks, Route 66 Revisited, etc. but there's a good chance they don't have this title yet. Guaranteed not to disappoint.
Another classic from the Bootleg Series with some essential takes.......2007-01-12
The Rolling Thunder Review live collection is a close second to Live 1966 as the most essential live Dylan album ever released. Throughout these recordings, a revitalized and energetic Dylan hollers out his new and old classics to a rambunctious crowd of random people (the show traveled like a circus and had little to no publicity) and reinvents many of his old songs along the way.
This series of shows, like many of Dylan's great post-'65 concerts, features a combination of hard-rocking band numbers and solo acoustic songs. He's got a great band, too, with several guitarists, a tight rhythm section, a violin, and even a pedal steel guitar. With this rocking ensemble he reworks several classics into hard rocking barnstormers. "It Ain't Me Babe" and "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" groove at quick paces and sound almost unrecognizable from their folky original versions. "It Takes a Lot to Laugh" and "Just Like A Woman" are transformed from their delicate studio incarnations to anthemic rockers. Likewise, Dylan's new material (soon to be recorded in the studio as Desire) rocks hardest of all. The versions of "Hurricane" and "Isis" recorded here put the studio versions to shame, performed with fire and energy here that makes these versions the essential recordings.
Some of the album's best moments are the acoustic tunes. The recent hits "Tangled Up In Blue" and "Simple Twist of Fate" sound great, and duets with Joan Baez like "The Water is Wide" channel Dylan's folk past while at the same time remaining firmly rooted in where he was at that moment.
The Rolling Thunder Revue presents Dylan in one of his most daring and original endeavors, and the excellent liner notes tell the story quite well. This collection contains a great selection of classics as well as some great songs that are under-represented in Dylan's live catalog ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol"). It's a wild ride and a rewarding listen that I heartily recommend.
I LOVE THIS!!!!.......2006-12-06
I absolutely love this double album. Growing up I owned a bootleg of the rolling thunder revue. Unfortunatly it got lost, however this cd did make up for it. The re-working of "it ain't me babe" is great, and the Joan Baez duo of "mama you've been on my mind" is really good with the country/rocking feel. My one slight problem with this is that "NEVER LET ME GO" was left off...that is not cool

A model for all live albums.......2007-06-22
Live Bootleg was released in 1978. Being Aerosmith's first live album, it included live versions of songs from all of their albums; AEROSMITH (Released in 1973, tracks that make an apperance on this album are Mama Kin and Dream On), GET YOUR WINGS (1974, included on this album are Lord Of The Thighs, SOS, and Train Kept A Rollin), TOYS IN THE ATTIC (1975, Toys In The Attic, Walk This Way, and Sweet Emotion), ROCKS (1976, Back In The Saddle, Sick As A Dog, Last Child), and DRAW THE LINE (1977, Draw The Line, Sight For Sore Eyes). This CD also includes a few songs not on these albums (The cover of the Beatle's Come Together, Chip Away The Stone, and two covers from an apperance at Pall's Mall in 1973 that is widely bootleged: Mother Popcorn and I Ain't Got You)
The original release on vinyl was on two records, and included a poster. The cover was meant to parody bootlegs of Aerosmith shows that surfaced. Infact, to make it seem more like a bootleg, they did not include "Draw The Line" on the tracklisting. This is from the 1978 show in Philadelphia at the Tower.
This is Aerosmith's at its raunchiest, rawest form. The band was heavily in drugs at the time and that is evident in the recordings. For example, in Dream On, Steven seems to struggle with the vocals in this song. But to me, this is what Aerosmith is. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Even the ugly is better than any music out there today. Aerosmith is up in your face for over an hour. Highlights of the album include a fast-paced Toys In The Attic, a 7+ minute Lord Of The Thighs jam, and the the two "club" numbers Mother Popcorn and I Ain't Got You. But really, the whole album is a highlight. Everything is so loose and rocking, it is the perfect defintion of what a live album should be. A lot of the tracks here are even better than their studio counterparts, for example, S.O.S., Walk This Way (which includes Joe Perry using the talkbox throughout the song), Train Kept A Rollin (incluiding Strangers in the Night), and Sight for Sore Eyes (which Stevens opens the song by asking "Are they gonna let you dance tonight?").
If you are only familiar with the new "polished" Aerosmith (see Just Push Play), you might have a little difficulty adjusting to the band as they were over 20 years ago. This is Aerosmith at its roots. This is Aerosmith before it was pressured by record companies to make pop songs. This is Aerosmith playing raw rock n roll. This is one album that should not be passed up by any fan of Aerosmith, or even rock music in general. This is one of the best live albums of all time and ranks at the top alongside Get Yer Ya-Yas Out and If You Want Blood.
Warts and All!.......2007-02-20
The inclusion of Mother Popcorn from the bootleg 1973 at Pall's Mall in Boston is worth the price of admission. Tight, Funky, Greasy, Raunchy, Raw, Rock & Roll.
I like this live album because it shows the band as it was, warts and all.
Play it loud!!!.......2007-01-12
If youre an Aerosmith fan you have to have this album. I saw Aerosmith on the Draw The Line tour and not again til 2004. This album shows you the root of how they became maybe the greatest american rock and roll band of all time!
Now I know why they quit using drugs.......2006-11-20
I like Aerosmith and have been a fan for years, but honestly speaking, this is far from their best effort. I purchased the vinyl of "Live Bootleg" not long after it came out, and I loved it as a teenager, however after revisiting this element of my childhood, I can firmly say that the memory is much sweeter than the actual recording.
"Live Bootleg" was recorded in 1978 prior to the band's disintegration due largely to drug use. This album in not their finest hour, however if you're a completist, or just simply enjoy hearing drug-addled musicians sloppily play classic hits, then there's a chance you may enjoy it.
Even the recording quality of this album is pretty disappointing; there are few punchy moments where the listener would prefer the live version to the recorded version. Compared to other live albums recorded in this era (Kiss "Live II" or Led Zep's "Song Remains the Same"), Aerosmith's attempt is pretty weak. There's even an annoying buzz through most of the album. Maybe the concept of "Live Bootleg" was to have it sound like a cheap bootleg album, but the novelty wears off rather quickly, especially for the listener who paid full price.
The highlight is the cover of James Brown's "Mother Popcorn". Oh yeah, and the pictures in the booklet were okay.
A super-nova of a live album - one of A-Smith's greatest.......2006-08-12
This is still one of the most underrated live rock albums of all time. Bought the vinyl when it was released. Wore it out. Bought the CD. Wore it out. Bought another. Wearing it out. Steven Tyler wails at his best and Joe Perry's guitar is on fire! A must-have, absolute, unapologetic, timeless rocker.

A Killer CD.......2007-03-08
The Authorized Bootleg, opens with a bang with "Cherokee", Coleman opens with an engaging solo intro and then ups the tempo as he brings in the band and continues to tear it up with about four minutes of amazing choruses Then Joey answers with a blistering solo of his own. The CD continues to explore standards with astonishing originality and passion.
Even at 70, George Coleman is a monster on tenor and Joey gives plenty of space to him throughout. Coleman is featured heavily on this CD, but don't forget that Joey is the greatest B3 player in the world and this band is arguably the best jazz organ trio playing today. They are so tight they can relax enough to explore the beauty of these standards with spontaneity and imagination. "These songs have been played a million times," says DeFrancesco in the liner notes, "but the level of live playing here is what gives the music its bebop and post-bebop beauty. We're all playing in the moment--balls to the wall."
Live: The Authorized Bootleg is one of the best recordings I have heard in quite a while. I strongly recommend it.
Great stuff.......2007-03-08
I pre-orderd this, having been a fan Joey D for a long time I was very excited for this to come out.
It arrived today and just running through the tracks, it sounds incredible. The recording is amazing and the song selection is perfect. I can see myself listening to this for years to come, great job Joey and great job again Concord!

BUY THIS !!! You will smile : ).......2007-04-20
Been a huge Dada fan since Puzzle & Dizz Knee Land (which was originally titled Disneyland on the pressing. Disney sued due to the "violent" nature of the subject matter, and subsequent issuances were re-spelled to pacify Disney (now a promoter of some far,far worse content in thier media). IMHO this is the best trio, if not the best band to come out of the 90's. It is very sad that they did not meet with more financial success. But they have put out music that is unequalled in it's muscianship, and complexity & simplicity at the same time.
I saw them live 1 time, at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem NC in 2004. It was an amazing night I'll never forget. Michael Gurley was there playing with the flu, no less, what dedication! They sounded flawless.
This CD is a great capture of thier in concert ability.
Joie Calio's performance of "Moon" is alone worth more than the price of the CD.
I find myself at a loss for words to describe the talent this trio exhibits......
Captures the live experience.......2007-01-10
This CD aptly captures the live vibe of this talented band. As the band's first live album, the clarity of sound does justice to the complex musicianship and strong songwriting. The song selection is well balanced and shows off dada's considerable range and talent. A great live album from a brilliant live band.
Modern Sanatanaesque.......2005-02-04
I saw dada in concert a year ago and have been a dada fanatic ever since. This is the first album I bought (at the concert). I love this album, but didn't become a dada fanatic until I bought their 5 studio albums. You can get most of their albums here, but should check out their store at dadatheband.com since some are cheaper there (several of their albums are sold out there so you need to get them here). This album is best for someone who loves dada already or loves to watch Santana in concert, for example. With this album you get a nine minute version of Ask The Dust, a drum solo that moves into their song Posters and audience participation with their two anthem songs - Feel Me, Don't You #$@ and Here Today, Gone Tomorrow. You also get a wonderful live versions of Dizz Knee Land and A Trip With My Dad. These three musicians are phenomenal. If you don't own any dada music, start with Puzzle. You can get the used IRS version cheap, but they have a new release with bonus tracks that you'll want to pick up later (so you may want to start with those anyway). All of their albums, including their solo albums are fantastic. If you like 60s psychedelic music, then pick up How To Be Found. I think their albums dada and El Subliminoso have more of a Alternative/Modern Rock feel, and American Highway Flower has a slight southern rock feel. All of them are 90s alternative with superior musicianship and harmonies.
My Friend Joey C.......2004-06-17
Hello, I became a fan in 92 when a stereo store clerk demoed the new "DADA - Puzzle" CD for me. I went to see them open for STING in SEATTLE the following year and met the Band at a bar where they played again that night. They were even better in that dark, crappy little club! They were very approachable and signed autos & CDs. 5 years later my friend calls and says she just got hired as a nanny for this bass player from LA that just moved to Seattle. NO WAY! I got to come over and hang out with Joey Calio @ his house and we started Mountain Biking 5-6 times a mo. Well it's been 5 years since then and I am still a huge fan! I just went to see my friend in another dark, crappy Seattle Club. And I bought This CD plus the New Joey Calio & New DADA studio CDs, and Joey & the band signed them all! I play them all the time. GREAT guyz & Great Musicians! Buy all thier music! ;-)
Perfectly captured.......2004-06-16
This is a band that was sorely overlooked in part because of their record company's demise. They truly have it all.. songwritting, great vocals and excellent musicianship. Unfortunately I've never seen them live however this cd does a great job of capturing them fleshing out some of their best songs. It is a good introduction to this trio.

Got ears? Gotta blow 'em!.......2005-09-26
Steppenwolf gets the credit for coining the term "Heavy Metal" Blue Cheer deserves the credit for inventing it! This is not a state of the art recording, but it's got the feel of a great live gig in a small club. Whether you're an overaged hippie or a modern-day headbanger, this is a must have recording for anyone who likes it loud 'n' raw! A whole lotta fun, the louder the better!
hey dickie, how about some new songs?.......2005-09-23
i love blue cheer and am fanatical about their releases. these are good recordings and i do recommend it with reservations. they seem to fall in the same trap that the groundhogs have done, in that the live material has generally, the same songs on it. i disagree with some of the reviewers that insist that these are all that much more different or that much better than the previous live releases. overall, they are basically the same. being live, of course they are a little different in performance, spirited play or whatever. but nevertheless, the song remains the same. hopefully there will be more live releases with different songs and even better yet, a new studio album. love these guys!
Bootleg: Live.......2005-09-15
Countless rock and roll journals have asserted that Blue Cheer is first and foremost a live band. In the words of Dickie Peterson, "You can listen to all the Blue Cheer records that we ever made but when you see us live it's different, because it's more a physical part of you. When you come to our concerts, you get a lot more than what's on the record."
Having had the good fortune of seeing Blue Cheer live at the recent Biker Rally in Laconia, NH, I can say that I agree dead-on with Dickie. So granted, when you listen to the newly released BOOTLEG: LIVE, you won't get the full decibel attack that you would at an actual show, unless perhaps you have twin Marshall stacks hooked up to your stereo. However . . . .
This CD definitely captures all the rawness, feedback, excitement, and intensity that the boys kick out during the course of their live set. I can safely assure you that this CD, combining highlights of two past shows from a few years back, is a great example of what Blue Cheer is really like live in concert, a feat many other live albums fail to achieve.
On first glance of the album's set list, many fans will notice that a lot of the tunes have already appeared on the two previous live albums in the Blue Cheer catalog. DO NOT draw the erroneous conclusion that this set is something you have already heard and DO NOT disservice yourself by passing it by! This is NOT the same live album already in your collection.
Blue Cheer's roots stem from the San Francisco scene of the mid-60s, and in the spirit of that era, they have always maintained the free-form "jamming" approach to playing their music. In concert, no song is ever played the same way twice and can often sound radically different from one show to another. Therefore, most cuts on this album-such as Doctor Please, Parchment Farm, and Heart of the City-display a fresh, new vitality and contain some of the best live jams previously unheard.
Of course, there's Summertime Blues; not the best version the band has ever played, but this is a Blue Cheer set and thus must be present nonetheless. An added surprise, alone worth the price of admission, is the band's first officially released, long-awaited cover of Roadhouse Blues.
BOOTLEG: LIVE is not just another typical Blue Cheer live album but rather one more piece of the legacy of Blue Cheer live albums. Listened to in the context of Blitzkrieg Over Nuremburg and Live In Japan, it will provide you with a fuller picture of Blue Cheer, the live band, and the ultimate testament to just how great they are in concert.

Everything about this CD spells raw power; the music, the musicians and even the cover. I think anyone who's into blues, rock and roll and just some good loud music should pick this CD up!

Customer Reviews:
Bodacious boot by the classic lineup.......2005-12-02
I purchased this official bootleg with skepticism, wary of what the sound quality might be. Other than the vocals being a bit distant, the audio fidelity on this 32 year old recording ROCKS!
Mountain has always been much better live than on their studio recordings. Leslie, Corky, and Felix blaze through a raucous set, including an improvised solo of Jingle Bells (!)
Having seen many live shows at the now defunct Capitol Theater, this set holds some sentimental value for me. It is a treat for any hardcore Mountain fan. Highly recommended.
Careful with this one.......2005-07-23
Big Mountain fan here and have been enjoying the bootleg releases that have surfaced lately from the archives of Corky and Leslie's personal stash. I purchased this one however and I am very disappointed. It stated it was recorded Live in New Jersey in 1973. I already own the Mountain Greatest Hits Live (King Biscuit Flower Hour)which is said to be recorded the same place only a year later. The recordings on this disk are the very same as the ones on the Mountain greatest hits live disk. However The King Biscuit Flower Hour sounds better and has more songs as well. Very disappointed in this one. It should have the dates correctly stated to avoid the confusion. I certainly did not need to spend the money i forked over for this one. The music is very good but king biscuit is the better buy by far. Crossroader is also listed as a song on the bootleg version but is nowhere to be heard on the disk though.

The best neo- progressive band of the century LIVE.......2005-05-23
The track listing for disc 1 is: Karelia, The Old Man & The Sea, Harvest, Slow Fire, Thoughts in Absence, Road to Nowhere, Book of Hours, The Flow. Disc 2: Groundbound, Where Solitude Remains, Wheel, Tabatah, Nucleus, Rubankh parts 1 & 2. Sound is audiophile quality, and some of the tracks that came across as a little bit stiff or stodgy on the first three studio albums receive fluid, incredibly energized performances. As with the albums, vocals are the weak point. Highly recommended to fans of '70s King Crimson.
