3 out of 5 stars It's not as bad as portrayed.......2007-05-29

This album got alot of flak as it was the album that caused the band to break up. However, it does have it's moments, and the first 3 songs were probably the best material to come out since "Rocks". The album kicks off with autobiographical "No Surprize", then it goes into one of the best rockers the band ever pulled off "Chiquita", and finally a rather good version of: "Remember(Walking In The Sand)" it has a dark sinister side to it, but so did the Shangri-La's version. Songs 4-7 to me were rather forgettable; about as forgettable as the recording sessions probably were for this album. It does pick up with thier cover of the Yardbird's song "Think About It", but I found it a little bit too long, finally the band's darkest song ever, and I do mean ever: "Mia". This showed the group at it's lowest, and probably it's least inspired. The drugs weren't doing the magic anymore, and it would tear the group apart as Joe Perry would leave, and form his own band, Brad Whitford would leave 6 months later, and then Steven Tyler would get the double whammy as he would experience a heart attack onstage, and then a motorcycle accident. The 70's ended with a whimper, and that would bring in the uptight 80's.

1 out of 5 stars Aptly named.......2007-03-12

I eagerly bought this album within a couple days of it's release, but other than the Yardbirds cover (Think About It, with a great one chord noise jam) it was pretty much useless - uninspired through and through. The "Behind the Music" stories years later about the band's situation during the sessions were no surprise.

I'm still a huge fan of the first four albums, but after the apparent holding actions of Draw the Line and Bootleg, this confirmed the band was in fatal decline. The reunion success later was fine for the band, but the original mid-70's magic has never returned.

5 out of 5 stars Tyler/Perry's last gasp and most underrated .......2007-02-03

This is the last time Perry/Tyler put the magic together on record, that is before their 80's comeback. This is a good record even though the band was not speaking to each other and on the brink of disaster. Perry and Whiford walked out near the end of the recording.

5 out of 5 stars The Band's Most Overlooked Disc.......2007-01-25

The album that broke the band. This album turned out to be the swan song for Brad Whitford and Joe Perry who both left after this album and tour. The band was in the throws of full scale drug and alcohol addiction by this time. Surprisingly the album is quite good; in fact I think it is their most underrated disc. The band goes back to their blues roots with killer versions of "Walking In The Sand" and "Refer Head Woman". The opening track "No Surprise" tells the story of the bands history and reminds me Boston's "Rock n Roll Band" with a similar theme. Other standout tracks include "Bone to Bone (Coney Island Whitefish Boy)" and the power ballad "Mia" about Tyler's daughter. "Three Mile Smile" is also a good one. Joe Perry plays some outstanding guitar on this disc as well. Personally I rank this up with the best in the band's catalogue.

4 out of 5 stars Aerosmith's first blues album........2006-12-27

This is a very underrated album from these guys. It has a very fresh and different sound after Draw The Line and Rocks. I highly recommend it, although the amount of cover songs on it has always bothered me. Three out of nine is too many.

5 out of 5 stars Japanese Mini Lp.......2007-07-09

...really a beautiful release in papersleeve, the package, inserts with lyrics both japanese and english, and Obi of course, is the most beautiful of all Aerosmith's papersleeves! recommendable. this is not a classic as rocks and toys and the attic, but the package is perfect!

4 out of 5 stars The end of an era..........2004-12-19

Night In The Ruts (1979.) Aerosmith's sixth album.

A commonly-shared opinion amongst fans of Aerosmith is that the group entered somewhat of a downhill slide after releasing their two best overall albums, Toys In The Attic and Rocks. The album that followed, Draw The Line, is considered to be the beginning of that downward slide. Despite having shaken the confidence of some of their long time fans, the group tried to rebound in 1979. Unfortunately, this was one of the group's darkest hours - tensions in the band were rising, and for the recording of the new album, the band even had to use some session guitarists. Read on for my review of Night In The Ruts.

I really think this album (and Draw The Line before it) tend to get a bad rap. NO, they aren't as good as the band's middle two albums from the classic period, but in their own right they're excellent rockers through and through. However, I won't deny that this album, in many ways, does come off seeming like a copy of Draw The Line - both albums feature a very similar, bluesy-hard rock sound. But it's a good sound, still. The only real hit to emerge from this album was a cover of an old Shangri-La's tune, Remember (Walkin' In The Sand.) While the cover tune gets mixed reviews from fans, I think it's a very good track. Other noteworthy songs include No Surprize and Chiquita - two awesome hard rockers that kick the album off. It's a shame they weren't bigger hits! Many of the songs use the same hard rock meets blues rock styling, and for the most part, this works well. The album is concluded with Mia, a rather excellent acoustic ballad that could easily have been a top ten hit, had it been released as a single. In the end this is a very good album, but it doesn't top the early work from the band's glory days.

The Aerosmith albums were remastered and rereleased, but the reissues are very disappointing - the record company didn't do twofer albums were applicable, nor did they do bonus tracks. They have plenty of rare tracks from the Pandora's Box set that would have made fine bonuses, too. Oh, well. This doesn't alter my feelings for the album.

Night In The Ruts was the sixth and last album Aerosmith would release (until their reunion a few short years later.) In many ways the release of this album marked the death of Aerosmith's classic sound (not to say they wouldn't release excellent material in the future, though.) Final verdict? Another album for the die-hards and not so much the casual fans.
