Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Steinman's Musical Genius.......2006-12-18

Steinman is a songwriting genius, and again he gets the chance to prove it on this album. Part of the songs used for Meat Loaf's 'Bat Out Of Hell II' album started here, as tracks for Pandora's Box, songs such as 'Good Girls Go To Heaven' & 'It Just Won't Quit'. My personal favorite on this album, however, is 'Safe Sex', a song that has not been covered by anyone else as far as I know. The songs included here that are not written by Steinman are simply filler, and don't hold the same granduer as do the others, but almost every other track is magic, the kind that only Steinman can write. If you're a fan of Steinman, Meat Loaf, or even Celine Dion (who covered the song 'It's All Coming Back To Me Now') I would recommend you give this one a chance, it is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Jim Steinman at his Best.......2006-10-02

I have yet to be let down by the musical talents of Jim Steinman. When he created Pandora's Box, he set himself apart from every other composer in rock and classical history.

As in many of Steinman's projects, he loves the use of 4 part vocal harmonies, against either a lush and beautiful background of piano and strings, such as in Safe Sex and The Future Ain't What It Used To Be, or against an up-beat, almost metal-like, sound of epic proportions, such as in Good Girls and Original Sin. Also in this album, you hear fragments of his orchestral ideas and theatrical monolouges. From the first word in the Invocation to the final barber-shop style vocal ending, this album will keep you asking for more. Like an anthem, you just can't hear enough of it.

5 out of 5 stars Angelic and Demonic!.......2006-04-09

That's how this album sounds. Jim Steinman is a musical genius--and ironically, pretty much unknown only because he allows other artists to perform most of his songs. Mozart and Beethoven have nothing on Steinman.

Buy this album, you won't regret it.

Note to Jim Steinman: let Holly Sherwood and Rory Dodd sing all of your songs with you as a trio. That would make my day.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC!!!!!!.......2005-04-04

I absolutely love this CD - I had been a J.S. fan for years and had not heard of it until about 3 years ago and after a bit of searching I found it here on Amazon. It was a bit pricey at the time but I had to have it. And then it stayed in my CD player for at least 6 months!!!

ORIGINAL SIN {covered by both Meatloaf & Taylor Dayne} - any covers you may have heard are NOTHING compared to this version. There are not enough adjectives to describe it.

That can be said for the rest of the tracks but ESPECIALLY the song - THE FUTURE AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE - Melodic, operatic, grand in scope and focus, sheer perfection, and it leaves you haunted long after you've heard it. I'm getting chills as I type this just thinking about that song.

You owe it to yourself to buy this CD ASAP. Just hit "one click" and then prepare to be blown away!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Must for Steinman fans.......2005-01-05

Original Sin is a must for any fan of Steinman's music, because it contains tracks that we've heard covered, but whose originals rock harder. (I can't believe I just wrote that, but it's true.) If you're a fan of Jim's musical Tanz der Vampire (not the Crawford-infected Broadway version) this also gives insight into the genesis of that show.

The title track is now my favorite Steinman song, and my theme as I search for a dissertation topic. It is THE reason to own this recording.

"Good Girls go to Heaven" and "It Just Won't Quit" have been covered by Meat Loaf, but are better here. I think they mellowed by the time Meat sang them.

"It's all Coming Back to Me Now" is a song I detest when Celine Dion sings it, but this recording has redeemed the song and converted me.

Go ahead and skip the covers of non-Steinman stuff on this album, "Twentieth Century Fox" and "Little Red Book." They accomplish nothing.

And last but not least, I worship Roy Bittan on piano, from his work on Steinman albums alone. Listen to "Pray Lewd" (say it aloud to get the joke) and you will understand why.

Aerosmith were written off by the pop pundits in the early '80s as a drug-ravaged bunch of Rolling Stones clones who would go down in music history as little more than a hard-rock footnote. The band, however, rose from the ashes to become an even mightier hit machine in the '90s, even if they ended up selling their soul to pop über-songstress Diane Warren in the bargain. This three-CD compilation is a marathon tour of their first glorious, casualty-ridden decade and a body of work that proudly wears its influences on its sleeve: Chicago and Delta blues, early R&B, the Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, and, of course, the Stones. Virtually all the early hits and concert crowd pleasers are here, along with nearly two dozen rare, unreleased, and live cuts, thoroughly documented with refreshing doses of self-deprecation as it bravely traces the band's arc from Boston bar-band supreme to stadium superstars to seeming dissipation. If there's a gaping hole in the "A" section of your hard-rock library, this is a fine introduction to the Aerosmith that influenced a generation of musicians, stretching from Van Halen to R.E.M. to Guns N' Roses. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 70's Aerosmith.......2007-07-18

This 3 disc box set sets the standard for raunchy, sleazy, dirty Aerosmith that we all know and love. The majority of the songs are from their 70's drug induced stardom. There are nearly a dozen unreleased tracks and cuts on here, all of which are great. Aerosmith's cover of The Beatles "Helter Skelter" is amazing, it even rivals the quality of the orignal. If you want to know why Aerosmith was so highly heralded in the 1970's, then pick this box set up and crank the volume Aerosmith style. (Which is WAY UP) 5 STARS CERTAINLY

5 out of 5 stars classic aerosmith at their best.......2007-02-15

for someone who loves classic aerosmith (from 1971-1982) this box set is simply the best deal you'll ever find! all their best and then some. lots of fun unrealeased stuff and new concert clips which all soar.personally...i don't care for their more recent stuff but in the 70's these guys rocked and this box set claims its stake.nothing but good things to say about it. a definate must for anyone curious or some who wants alot of their stuff cheap.
for a mere $10 or $15 more than greatest hits...you get ALL their greatest hits.do yourself a favor and buy this...like now!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Now THIS is how a box set should be done........2006-02-23

Unreleased live tracks, rarities, well-known favorites and not-so-well-known album tracks...this is how a box set SHOULD be done! Why can't all artists put it together this way ? With a set like this chronicling the best hard-rock band in America, the only album you need besides this from Aerosmith's golden period of 1973-79 is the superb 'Rocks' album and, perhaps, 'Live Bootleg'. This box set really takes care of all the rest - that's how well done it is. Trust me, all your favorites are here and the stuff you haven't heard before is revealing and fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars This is one of the best box sets I own!.......2006-02-23

This is a great box set. It's the "hodge-podge" format which as you already know it includes live cuts, demos, originals, previously unreleased, etc. ANYONE could enjoy these 3 Aerosmith albums but mostly this is an album for die-hard Aerosmith fans or someone that's already into the band atleast on some level.

Are the newer releases remastered? NO! But the 1991 set sounded great to begin with. Like Led Zeppelin's box set in 1990 it was done right to begin with.

That being a given, this set is quite excellent. It focuses on the first 7 albums from 1973 to 1982. Most of the greatest hits sets out there (2 disc sets) focus on the 1985 - 2001 era such as "Gold" does. O Yeah! The Ultimate Aerosmith set has about 1/3 pre-1985 stuff on it. They dedicate about 1/3 to each decade. If the early stuff is your favorite, then this set is the true gold. There are a couple of single discs (Greatest Hits and Gems) which focus on the 70's, but as some of us know there are edited versions of some songs on Greatest Hits.

If you want to get into the early 70's stuff I suggest getting each album, especially now that those are remastered. And they really are. 20 bit. But if you don't want to buy all six or seven of those, this set is the next best thing and you can get it very inexpensively used/new here on Amazon.com Even if you have all of the 70's albums there are 20 previously unreleased tracks on Pandora's Box. So, there is plenty there for the collector or the new fan of 70's material.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but too much of it is previously released.......2004-11-29

Pandora's Box. An Aerosmith box set.

When Aerosmith began to regain fame in the late eighties and early nineties, many fans of the group began to forget about the classic hard rock material that the group had recorded in the seventies, prior to their original break-up. This was a shame, because the band's seventies material was really the best stuff they had ever recorded. To try to make the Aerosmith legacy of the past more well-known, the Pandora's Box set was released. Read on for my review of this set.

PROS:
-YOU GET THREE DISCS OF MATERIAL FROM THE BAND'S CLASSIC SEVENTIES MATERIAL. This is the era in which the band was in their prime, and it's great that the record company decided to released a box set of nothing but tracks from this era.
-THERE ARE A TON OF UNDERRATED MASTERPIECES AND RARE TRACKS. This isn't just a hit singles box - there are plenty of underrated album cuts here. Furthermore, the box does one better and gives you a ton of rarities! You get demos, alternate takes, alternate versions, rare tracks, and tons of other cool little rare things. The unreleased stuff is the best part of this set.
-THE LINER NOTES ARE NICE. The notes will give you plenty of seventies Aerosmith info, and let you know about the band before their original break-up in the early eighties.

CONS:
-TOO MUCH OF THIS STUFF IS PREVIOUSLY RELEASED. The band really needs to make the rare stuff in this set available elsewhere, because most fans of the band sure as hell aren't going to be too willing to shell out the big bucks for the sake of a few rare songs - and they'll be getting so many songs they already have.
-FOR WHAT IT IS, THE SET IS OVERPRICED. A set like this should be priced considerably less, unless the band would have been willing to include an extra disc of material. I personally think the band would have been better off releasing a collection of their complete albums from this era, along with an extra disc of material.

OVERALL:
Overall, this is a very good set, I just wish they'd made the unreleased tracks available somewhere else, since most fans don't want to buy the same songs twice. Still, it's an excellent overview of the band in their prime, and is strongly recommended to any fan of the group.

4 out of 5 stars Same great 1991 release. Exactly the same. Not re-remastered though........2006-02-23

You might think this latest release has been remastered a 2nd time but you'd be wrong. Apparently, it was remastered once in 1991 though and they did a great job of it! Basically all you need to do is read the reviews from the original release. Last I checked there were 20 and counting. The only thing you need to know about the 1997, 2000 and 2002 re-issues is that they're the exactly the same as the 1991 set sound-wise. I have them both here and compared side by side at the same volume so take it from me.

4 out of 5 stars THE RUN DOWN..........2002-08-24

i'M THE FIRST ONE TO REVIEW THE 4TH, BUT CERTAINLY NOT FINAL, RE-PACKAGE OF THE 1990 AEROSMITH BOX SET, SO HERE GOES...
WHAT YOU GET: A FANCY NEW PACKAGE MADE TO LOOK LIKE A HARDBOUND BOOK WITH THE SAME OLD BOOKLET FROM THE ORIGINAL BOX GLUED IN IT. LOUDER SOUND, NOT REMIXED, REMASTERED, OR "SUPER BIT MAPPED" (SBM MEANS NOTHING FOLKS, IT'S A SONY THING THAT THE SUITS MADE UP TO MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE THERE IS SOME KINDA IMPROVEMENT GOING ON). THE DBS ARE CRANKED UP SO THE DISCS SOUND GOOD ON A CHEAPIE DORM ROOM TYPE STEREO BUT FLAT AND LIFELESS ON A "REAL" STEREO. THE DISCS THEMSELVES HAVE CORNY NEW SILKSCREENS TO FURTHER MAKE THIS SET "DEFINITIVE". THEY SHOULD HAVE CALLED THIS SON-OF-A-GUN "pandoras book" it would have made more sense.
I can'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THE GUTS THOUGH. CLUNKER FREE AEROSMITH. FROM STONERS TO COKE-HEADS AND BACK AGAIN, RAGS TO RICHES TO RAGS, KILLER RIFF, MIGHTY SCREAM, RINSE, REPEAT... SONY CAN'T SCREW IT UP, OH, THEY TRY... SQUASH THE BASS, DE-STEREOIZE HERE, RE-EQ THERE, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY IT'S 'SMITH, THE ONLY 'SMITH, THE ROCK N' ROLL 'SMITH (PRE-MTV). IF YOU DON'T GOT IT, GET IT, ANY FORMAT'LL DO, THEY'RE ALL COOL.
AEROSMITH ARE THE ONLY BAND I KNOW OF THAT MAKES 40 YEAR OLDS WANT TO "DO IT" IN THE BACK SEAT OF A CAR, BUZZIN ON MALT LIQUOR .... DOES LIFE GET ANY COOLER?

      Album Description

GERARD performed in its beginnings an elegant and elaborated symphonic music that took after the golden Progressive rock played by YES, GENESIS and friends. A blend of sensitivity, precious lyricism and power can be heard in the first albums recorded by the quartet, led by the famous keyboardist Toshio EGAWA (NOVELA, SHEHERAZADE, EARTHSHAKER…). The eponymous album issued in 1983 was the leader of the remarkable Japanese Progressive rock movement that was then just starting. GERARD has eventually become a power (To put it mildly !) trio, started with "The Pendulum" in 1996, and followed with "Pandora's Box" the following year. This instrumental band is sophisticated and bubbly. It features from time to time Canadian singer Robin SUCHY, and performs a collection of "epic" tracks in the style of the second UK album. The mini-CD "Evidence Of True Love" and "Meridian" (Mostly revisited tracks from the first period) follow the path of a kind of Progressive rock dominated by the keyboards which completely fill the sound space. The power and lavishness of the other acknowledge model EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER seem, comparatively and in some occasions, to be the work of nice lullaby singers !!!... "Live in Marseille - Battle Triangle" is a good example of GERARD's powerful and frenetic music, when they were invited to play in France during the Year of France in Japan (in July 1998), in exchange for a concert by ECLAT in Tokyo… The 2000 & 2002 albums, respectively called "The Ruins of a Glass Fortress" & "Sighs of the Water" follow this trend, in a relatively less flashy style. Indeed, generally speaking, the power they show combines with a virtuosity worth of the greatest power-organ trios. The prevailing bass with guitar accents and some amazing drums contribute to give their music an impact and a strength usually found in the best hard-rock bands ! Their music is then unique, and only share with Eddie JOBSON & John WETTON's mythic line-up, the enthusiasm, the wealth and the both harmonic and melodic diversity that make those albums indispensable jewels !

At the beginning of "A Whiter Shade of Pale", you can hear the engineer say "Whiter Shade of Pale, take 1". This was the 1st take of this classic tune, not an alternate take.

3 out of 5 stars Mezmerising stereo mixes of what could have been........2002-05-23

The key to this particular Procol release is in the stereo mixes of songs from the first album that we've only been able to hear in mono up until now. Granted, these are alternative takes and probably recorded early in the creative process. But listening to "Conquistador," "Something Following Me," "Cerdes (Outside the Gates Of)," "Kaleidoscope" and "Repent Walpurgis" in full-blown stereo for the first time is a revelation. It offers a tantalizing aural glimpse of what Procol's legendary (and horribly produced in mono only) first album could have sounded like in stereo.

3 out of 5 stars Buy it for the musicians.......2000-07-02

One reason I bought this CD is because these phenomenal underpaid musicians deserve the royalties. I sure HOPE they got a decent deal from the record company! I wish artists' takehome pay from CD's were common knowledge in the music biz, because this should be a factor in fans' purchasing decisions. My other reason is that there's more of Robin Trower's excellent blues guitar in the fadeout to Wish Me Well than there was in the original. But -- other than that tune -- I like the originally-released versions MUCH better than these rejected outtakes, and I agree with most of what reviewer Kurt Harding has said. A couple of points of clarification: The alternate/rejected version of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" on this CD is actually a LATER recording than the hit single -- no matter what the liner notes say -- the Westside reissue liner notes are riddled with errors. Come to the ProcolHarum fan Site to find the correct information. The hit single was recorded before the band was fully formed, but the essentials were already in place for this immortal song, i.e. Gary Brooker's fantastic soulful vocals and Matthew Fisher's enchanting Hammond organ. The song also needed a tasteful and musical drummer, and they got one -- no, not B.J. Wilson who would add his phenomenal musicianship to the band a few months later when the first album was recorded, and definitely not Bobby Harrison, who was hired as a band member the day before the hit single was recorded, but left soon after, along with Ray Royer, who played thankfully barely audible guitar on the hit single. The drummer on the single was the wonderful jazz session man Bill Eyden. The version on this album is with Bobby Harrison and you can hear how his drumming (and Gary Brooker's too-loud piano in places) detracts from the mood of the piece. It was incredibly lucky for them that they got the Perfect Recording of this immortal song in a "first take," recorded Live in the studio with no overdubs or studio tinkering -- as all their music should have been recorded (with state of the art engineering) but sadly wasn't. A minor annoyance is that the cover on the CD depicts the aborted lineup with Royer and Harrison (they're pictured 2nd & 3rd from the left) although most of the songs on the CD feature the Procol of the first album, with Robin Trower and B.J. Wilson.

      3 out of 5 stars There's a Reason for Alternate Takes.......2000-06-26

A three-star rating is pretty darn good for an album composed of unissued stereo mixes and alternate takes. After all the purpose of recording these is to develop a refined sound and the reason that these were unissued is that they are unrefined. I am not in the music business, but I can only surmise that the producer, the musicians and all concerned personnel get together, listen to these takes, then work out ways to make them better and smoother. This is raw sound. Actually, some of these are quite good with only a few kinks to be worked out. Trower's guitar on Something Following Me has less sting here than on the issued version while on Cerdes the opposite occurs. Repent Walpurgis is one song which underwent extensive refinements before it is issued on Procol Harum's eponymous debut album. You'll notice here that the bass is heavy in spots where it should be subdued and that there is much more fire in Trower's guitar. I like this version better than the second (long) version on this album which is much choppier and less mature musically. Whiter Shade of Pale is the most recognisable Procol Harum song, but Repent Walpurgis is the most intense, spiritual and sophisticated of all the many such Procol Harum songs so that it is important that it was recorded as near to perfect as it could be as it eventually was. The early version of Pandora's Box shows itself to be not yet fully developed musically. Its probably a good thing the band waited before putting it on vinyl even though it contains some oddly interesting organ riffs. I've always liked "In the Wee Small Hours of Sixpence", with its quintessentially "English" feel and the majesty of Matthew Fisher's Hammond organ. This take could have been the issued one, needing very little in the way of revision. Kaleidoscope, Wish Me Well, and Conquistador all similarly needed very little adjustment before being ready for vinyl. This compilation closes with an unrefined yet enjoyable version of A Whiter Shade of Pale, quite possibly the greatest and most sublime piece of music EVER to grace the pop charts. That was in a time when there was a tiny window of opportunity for the people to decide what we should listen to rather than the cabal of deal-makers and tin-eared executives who ultimately usurped that power. Pandora's Box is important to Procol Harum fans in that we can listen to greatness at its inception and see how much work it took to "get it right". Everything can't be 5-star. If you love Procol Harum as I do, then even this 3-star album deserves an honored place in your collection. The only swabby element of the album is the picture of the band on the frontpiece in those silly-looking outfits.

This is definitely one of Bill's best cd's! "Buried Treasure" and "Before You Get to Heaven" are two of his best songs ever done! They need to be re-released and become big hits on all radio airwaves! This man can rock the house! If you don't have this cd, you are missing our on a serious Bill Mumy investment! Each song takes you on a journey to the ends of the earth and back! Wow! He definitely opened up Pandora's Box here with this one. Move over, Justin Timberlake, Bill Mumy has brought sexyback with this album! Listen to "Buried Treasure" on repeat a few times and you will see what I mean! This man has one hell of a sexy voice! Yes, there is buried treasure around here!

Another CD from the Bill Mumy music factory has this listener on the 5th spin. Bills' music is always quite infectious and this is no different. I always take a few takes to get into anything good and this does not disappoint. I do however prefer 'In the currant' & 'Dying to be Heard' which have a great mood. (I'm the same with U2) Get if if you can - its' a hard one to source!
