5 out of 5 stars "EVERYBODY SEEMS TO BE READY...ARE WE READY?.......2007-07-11

From the opening introduction to the last guitar cord ringing to fade out this is the Stones best live album and one of the greatest live albums of all time. There is a great debate going on the Amazom review board about this album it seems. Some think this Stones live album is not as great as it's reputation. Stating out of tune guitars, mistakes ... blah, blah, blah. The Stones are the greatest "rock and roll" band! Rock and Roll is not about being perfect....is it? I know that some would name other bands that they consider able to "blow the Stones away live",but this is not a contest of who can play the fastest or hardest. The Stones are not known for being technically perfect musicians. They are tremendous songwriters and have written many of the greatest rock anthems in history! I am a musician and their playing ability is excellent, but it is their style and writing craft that sets them apart. Their sound is seemingly easy, but just try to duplicate it. The Stones have an amazing ability to take a 3 cord progression and turn it into something special. Musically Brown Sugar,Jumpin' Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Woman to name a few are nothing more than basic rock tunes in the hands of any other group. Yet I have never heard another group pull off an exact sounding cover of any of their songs. If I want to listen to incredible musicians I throw on a Rush album,if I want to rock I listen to the Stones. If there is another live album that comes close it might be Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More From The Road" The boys are smokin' on that one surpassing every one of their studio counterparts, but the Stones have more classics on one album than they have in their entire recording history. So, give me " Get Yer Ya ya's Out" with all it's raw wild power, because it rocks like no other blemishes and all! If I have one complaint about this album, they should have released the complete show. Satisfaction,Gimme Shelter and Under My Thumb to name a few songs done on that tour could have been added and their are incredible versions available in the movie Gimme Shelter of the Satisfaction and Gimme Shelter.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's that good..........2007-05-19

This is one of the best records the Stones have ever released. It is concise, powerful, intense, and brilliantly played. It is amazing how well Mick Taylor melds into the band, so recently added as he was by the time this tour started. I'm not convinced that the strict lead/rhythm method the band took on during his tenure is the best sound for the band. I think Brian Jones and/or Ron Wood weaving their guitars with Keith is better than Taylor's more constricting format, but this is still an excellent highlight for that unique stage in the Stones' history. I can't imagine Love In Vain ever done better than here with Taylor demonstrating his slide chops and his additions to Jumping Jack Flash, Midnight Rambler, Sympathy, and Street Fighting Man are excellent as well.
Furthermore, the band is truly scary on Midnight Rambler, Street Fighting Man is exhilirating and leaves you breathless, Sympathy is quite different than the studio version with good lead work by both guitarists, and Live With Me and the Chuck Berry covers are as rocking as any band ever gets (as well as being Keith Guitar School 101). There is simply not a dull moment or a bad song on this entire set.
As Keith pummels you with the opening hammer of Jumping Jack Flash just after Sam Cutler introduces the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World, you may come to realize that this document is the evidence that proves his Beatle-bashing boast beyond any doubt.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than Got Live.........2007-03-01

The first Stones Album, the first Live Album i ever bought was the first Stones Live Album and it was the first and only one i ever returned. I said the singing sucks and the playing is just damn awful. i was ready to give a whole list and fight to get my money back. Guess what? there was no argument, he agreed he said this was 'THE' album in the record section of Gimbel's Department Stores that has had the highest return to manufacturer at that time. I bought Ya-Ya's with a little please God let this be the one. It did not let me down. The Cover's and the Originals and singing plus Mick Taylor on Guitar was a corner stone to the album. I loved Brian Jones's work with the Stones and his betrayal was a key reason for the Stones sloppyness that was with them for a long time, included on their GLIYWI Album. Even though The Stones improved i still miss Brian Jones and his Musical Skills that made them hits. Can you imagine him on the Sitar and Mirimba at Concerts, today. Ya-Ya's Rocks, it did then, and in a Dinosaur Way, it still does.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Stones album.......2007-02-10

No question about it.
I could listen to The Rolling Stones covers of Chuck Berry's "Carol" and "Little Queenie" on this album
10 times a day every day for a year and never get sick of hearing'em.
"Midnight Rambler" played here is the definitive version of the tune.
The studio release pales in comparison.
The sleazy bluesy feel of "Rambler" captured on "Ya-Ya's" could never be duplicated in a recording studio.
The best part of this album though is in the first moments when a climactic energy seems to've gripped Madison Square Garden when the band is in the process of being introduced and taking the stage. You can practically feel the excitement and anticipation coming right thru your speakers from the crowd and the wild manner of the microphone announcements. It still brings chills to me imagining how that scene must've looked as it was playing out.
Again...my fave Stones record.A must have classic for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE REAL RAW ROLLING STONES IN THEIR PRIME! .......2006-12-02

I will be doing a review on the legendary masterpiece CD album entitled "GET YER YA-YA'S OUT," THE ROLLING STONES LIVE IN CONCERT by the band that has been called THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD! This album was originally released in 1970 on vinyl and cassette on the London Records label affiliated with ABKCO Records. This album saw its debut on CD in 1986 and re-released again in 2002 with the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) encoding process bringing these Original Master Recordings TO LIFE! The matrix or ID number of the 1986 CD release is 80052. The 2002 CD release is 90052. If I find out any new information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible.

This live CD compilation highlights the Stones two (2) Madison Square Garden shows recorded on November 27 & 28, 1969. In my opinion, "GET YER YA-YA'S OUT" IS THE GREATEST LIVE ALBUM ever recorded by the stones and ONE OF THE GREATEST LIVE ALBUMS EVER RECORDED IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY. If you love the Blues and Hard Rock Blues, this album is DEFINITELY for you. This live album reminds me of all three (3) Parts of "Fleetwood Mac Live At The Boston Tea Party" recorded on February 5, 6 and 7, 1970. EVERY SINGLE SONG ON "GET YER YA-YA'S OUT" IS OUTSTANDING! I am going to list and briefly review every song track on this album to let you know just how GREAT this album REALLY IS!

All the songs in this album are my favorite and are in order as follows: (1.) "Jumpin' Jack Flash," (WHAT A WAY TO OPEN THE SHOW, THIS BLISTERING KILLER CLASSIC SONG DOES NOTHING BUT KICK SOME SERIOUS A*S!) (2.) "Carol," (THIS BLISTERING KILLER SONG KICKS A*S! A GREAT TRIBUTE TO CHUCK BERRY.) (3.) "Stray Cat Blues," (A BLISTERING KILLER SLOW BLUES SONG THAT KICKS A*S!) (4.) "Love In Vain," (ANOTHER BLISTERING KILLER SLOW BLUES SONG THAT KICKS A*S! A GREAT TRIBUTE TO BLUES GREAT ROBERT JOHNSON.) (5.) "Midnight Rambler," (WHAT A BLISTERING KILLER LIVE ROCKER! THIS SONG KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S AND SHOWS NO MERCY! MY MOST FAVORITE SONG ON THE WHOLE ALBUM. THIS SONG ALONE SINGLE HANDEDLY DEFINED WHY THE STONES ARE THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD.) (6.) "Sympathy For The Devil," (ANOTHER GREAT BLISTERING KILLER ROCKER THAT KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! THIS SONG IS MY CLOSE SECOND MOST FAVORITE SONG ON THIS ALBUM. THIS IS THE BEST LIVE RENDITION OF THIS SONG EVER RECORDED BY THE STONES.) (7.) "Live With Me," (ANOTHER GREAT BLISTERING KILLER ROCKER THAT KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS ONE.) (8.) "Little Queenie," (A GREAT BLISTERING HARD BLUES ROCKER DONE THE STONES WAY, OUTSTANDING! I'M SURE CHUCK BERRY IS PROUD OF THE STONES FOR THIS ONE!) (9.) "Honky Tonk Women" (THE STONES TURNED THIS SONG INTO A LIVE BLISTERING KILLER ROCKER! I LOVE THIS LIVE VERSION.) and (10.) "Street Fighting Man." (WHAT A WAY TO END THE SHOW! THE STONES TURNED THIS ROCKER INTO A REAL BLISTERING KILLER ROCKER THAT KICKS A*S) ALL THESE SONGS KICKED SOME SERIOUS A*S! I AM NOT EXAGGERATING! Guitarist Keith Richards and newcomer Mick Taylor (Formally from John Mayall who replaced the recently deceased original member and leader of the Stones, Brian Jones.) WERE ON FIRE WHILE PERFORMING AT BOTH MADISON SQUARE GARDEN SHOWS DURING THEIR LEGENDARY 1969 WORLD TOUR. According to Rolling Stone Magazine, the Stones 1969 World Tour was voted in the Top 20 as one of the GREATEST Tours of ALL TIME! It is just too bad that the Stones 1969 World Tour had to end so TRAGICALLY at ALTAMONT SPEEDWAY as we all know what happened on that fateful night.

In closing, This album is DEFINITELY worth buying and EVERY music fan should own this live album as part of his or her music collection. This live album is the Stones at their ABSOLUTE BEST and is a TRUE TESTAMENT of what was to come from the newly reformed Rolling Stones and Rock n' Roll. Today, The Rolling Stones continue to be the GREATEST LIVE ACT IN THE WORLD. THE ROLLING STONES ARE STILL THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD! I know because I have seen every single tour since 1981 and will continue to see every tour in the future till the Stones are no more. Thanks for reading my long review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for all of you. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LONG LIVE THE ROLLING STONES! LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL! Rock out always and take care. J.L.

Guitar solos and nothing but. Meticulously culled and assembled by Zappa from live recordings made between 1979 and 1980, this three part set features some of the most dynamic and musical guitar work recorded anywhere by anyone. From the rhythmically dazzling "five-five-FIVE" to the unique lyricism of the three title tracks, Zappa proves beyond doubt that he belongs among the most elite of rock's guitar virtuosos. The remarkable interplay between Zappa and Vinnie Colaiuta--some consider this to be the drummer's best work--provides this album with some of its most memorable moments. --Andrew Boscardin

4 out of 5 stars cheezy box.......2007-02-02

I thought a boxed set would have a better box and real disk cases not paper.
The music wasn't as good as expected either. Franks later works are more tidy than the sometimes "at a loss of cords" jumble. Still good jams though.

5 out of 5 stars I don't want to shut up.......2006-12-05

I don't want to shut up because I want to say that this album contains some very beautiful music, even if some moments are ugly like the solo in Heavy duty Judy but it's Zappa you know, completly unpredictable. I prefer this one to "Guitar" album a lot. Guitar is a lot less interesting overall and this one represents Frank in his very deep soul to me. If you don't know what to buy among the two, buy this one for sure. About the music. It is only instrumental music. No words, no songs. Zappa complained at the time that in America you should have songs with words to be considered, and heard... but luckly he decided a lot of times to put out things like this one, a three records box of instrumental music and guitar stuff (with monsters musicians that played with him). I, as a competent Jazz guitarist, am not particularly shocked or impressed by Zappa's technique, on the contrary I absolutly don't consider him a virtuoso, but a quite "original" and unusual musician. A true naif of the instrument. He was a naif on the guitar, not a technician, a scientist of the instrument, or a perfectionist. But he, in his quite weird way, did communicate things. And this is what does it count. And I love to hear him play. But I think that his most important things are on the compositional side not as instrumentalist. But nevertheless I really appreciate this album. There are quite interesting tunes, textures, musical soundscapes and guitar solos. The packaging is well done even if I don't go crazy for paper boxes (they can be ruined easily). Inside you will find the three albums in their "original" cover artwork which is a strong plus for collectors. It is sure an important box in the immense Zappa's catalogue, full of masterpieces. I can suggest the purchase of this one absolutly. Go, do it!

if you like zappa, this is the one for you, a true guitar guniess!

5 out of 5 stars If you like music, buy this!!!.......2006-10-23

shut up and play yer guitar is a 3 cd set which includes some fantastic compositions by FZ.Not only are the guitar solos mesmerisingly magnificent, the bass and drums are beautifully performed also.Iwould reccommend this to anybody interested in the life and times of FZ as there is plenty of stunning guitar work on it.In short, just buy it,listen to it and enjoy!!

4 out of 5 stars Best of Zappa's Guitar Work........2006-07-28

What I like is the range of bizarre guitar sounds on the record and Frank's use of the guitar as a melodic instrument, like a jazz saxophone, instead of just a "rock out" guitar solo that is part of a regular song. The variety of guitar tones he gets are pretty amazing and fun to listen to.
He has this crazy natural abillity that is present in his solos. Every once in a while during a solo, he will hit the most beautiful note that you never even thought he could throw in, but he does it and i am amazed every time.
The title track is cool, so is Five-Five-Five, and I believe Steve Vai had some part in this record. I only have the tape, it's a 20 year old cassette. Treacherous Cretins is pretty cool too. A classic.

one of my all-time favorite albums[CD's]along w/ companion album follow-up~ 'Rides Again'[Jammin'Joe]ROX The House Down!!Excellent~ saw in concert in 1970~ still buzzin' o'er that one;-))right after 'Rides Again' came out~very creative albums~gotta admit Joe;Jeff Beck mustah been a major influence to ya, Joe;-)) love em both~ James Gang on Yer Album,&Rides Again a great Privelege for me to listen to!!!! You GO Joe!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hard, Strange, Awesome.......2007-04-03

A lot more jamming takes place on this album as opposed to its more well-known follow-up. However, the songs are just as strong and memorable. Joe Walsh is immediately the dominant force in the group with great guitar and vocals. While most people know the James Gang for their next few releases, all can do themselves a favor and give Yer' Album a solid listen. They won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Bird.......2007-01-13

One of thoses rare combinations of perfectly executed content and content perfectly executed. One of the great rock albums not only of that decade but to date. That it was a first album is even more impressive. This is one I go back to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Early Beginnings.......2007-01-03

There is a lot of raw unpolished material on The James Gang's first album and all the energy that goes with it. My personal favorite is their cover of Buffalo Springfield's Bluebird but there is great jams throughout this album, definately a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars This is a real classic !.......2006-08-12

I have always loved "Yer' Album" and this is one of those timeless albums with such a strong sound that surprisingly many have never heard. Many times when I have played this, people are so amazed and wonder why they don't recognise the tunes. I for one love the longer jams and this collection does not disappoint!

Introduced at the beginning of their second live album as "the greatest rock & roll band in the world," the Stones come off instead as perhaps the world's sloppiest. Recorded at Madison Square Garden on the first dates of the 1969 tour that would end at Altamont, Ya-Ya's shows our heroes struggling manfully to get comfortable with a stadium-size PA system. Of the nine songs included here, only "Love in Vain," "Stray Cat Blues," and "Live with Me" come close to matching the fire of their studio versions; much of the time the band just sounds ragged and distracted. Still, given that it's the only official live document from the period in which Mick Taylor was the Stones' lead guitarist, Ya-Ya's is a must-own for any die-hard Stones fan. --Dan Epstein

5 out of 5 stars When Rock & Roll was serious and I don't mean serious business!.......2006-06-30

I was fortunate enough to have seen The Stones on the 69 tour. Saw them @ The Inglewood Forum in LA. They were two hours late for the show but did they ever make up for it. Get Your Ya Ya's Out is a perfect history of the tour and of the era. The boys were definitely in great form and were playing like there was no tomorrow. The guitar solo in Sympathy For The Devil is one of the all time great solo's by anyone. Every time I get a new car, the first song I play is Sympathy from Get Your Ya Ya's out. I also have Liver Than You'll Ever Be and it is good. Especially Gimme Shelter (Waitin on you) and I'm Free. I only wish it was availabe on CD and cleaned up a little. The movie is great but not enough music. This is the album to have and to hold till death us do part.

3 out of 5 stars It Could have been so Much More.......2006-06-11

I didn't know when my friends and I agreed to get to get together and review some Rolling Stones records, that this review would be a comparison of the record that came out officially and the one that didn't, but how could it be any other way. Because of who Tiffany's father is, we were all exposed to "LiveR Than You'll Ever Be," before we'd heard any other record by the Greatest Group on Earth. Heck, I don't think her dad ever played "Ya-Ya's,' which sounds more like a studio record in places than a live record. If you've ever heard the terrific job Phil Spector did with George Harrison's Bangla Desh show, especially the Dylan stuff, you'll know what I mean. Now that's a live record. Mr. Spector miked the audience and worked that applause right into the material. My God, you can't hear that record without feeling like you're right there, as if you're sitting in the front row. Well, "LiveR Than You'll Ever Be" is like that. It's just plain and simple gut wrenching, power pumping, get up and dance your kester off rock and roll. There never has been a record like "LiveR." Ya-Ya's is a pale imitation. The boys in the band must have known that back then, how could they have put this out? It's good, the Stones are always good, but it could have been so much more, "LiveR" proves that.

5 out of 5 stars Just Frightening How Good this Band is.......2006-06-11

Oh Lord, I would have loved to have been in Madison Square Garden when this record was recorded. To see the way the guitars of Keith Richards and Mick Taylor danced together, that really would have been something. However, I missed the tour, probably because I hadn't been born yet, but still I can dream, can't I? And that's just what I try to do when I put this record on. I sit back, close my eyes and let the blistering "Jumpin' Jack Flash" wash over me. I always intend to listen to it this way, straight through, but by the second chorus of the song, I'm up and jumping around, just like Jack Flash. Is this record inferior to the bootleg? No, I don't think so. "LiveR Than You'll Ever Be" was recorded at the beginning of the tour. The record is great, the band is great, but by the time they got to New York, they were really, really on. I enjoy listening to the difference. And that difference is really pronounced in Chuck Berry's "Carol." You can hear how raw they are in Oakland and how polished in New York. The records are different, to be sure, but one is not better than the other, they are both five star live records and both belong in any serious record collection. The Stones Live, nobody ever has been or is now as great as they were and are. Did you see them at the Super Bowl, just frightening how good this band is, even still.

3 out of 5 stars Come On Boys, Call this Back and Put out LiveR for Real.......2006-06-11

Like my friends, I have to agree, the bootleg "LiveR than You'll Ever Be," is a diamond, while "Get Yer Ya-Yas Out" is a lump of coal. That said, "Ya-Yas" is still a pretty good live record, it's just not great. If I were the Stones, I'd pull this record and do what my friend Tiffany Ann from Black Diamond Bay suggested and put out the Bootleg for real. Come on boys, why don't you do that?

3 out of 5 stars Good, but the Bootleg was Great.......2006-06-10

I've heard is said that the Stones released this East Coast concert to counter the West Coast bootleg that was taking the rock world by storm. "LiveR Than You'll Ever Be," recorded surreptitiously during their two Oakland shows is not only much better than "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out", but it's probably the best live recording by any rock band ever issued. In fact it's one of the best rock and roll records ever issued and is certainly among the ten best Stones records to ever come out. I don't know why they put this out, because even they must have know the bootleg far out shown it. I know they didn't have tapes of the show, but come on, the bootleggers didn't own it. They Stones should have just made the best possible copy of the boot, using the state of the art equipment that existed back in the day and put the record out themselves. In fact, since the original bootleggers have given the tape to the guys in Europe who made the bootleg CD, they could copy it and put it out now. Just think, the Rolling Stones could issue the best live record to ever come down the pike and the bootleggers couldn't do a thing about it, but I don't guess they will and so, if you can't get a copy of "LiveR," than you'll have to live with the inferior "Ya-Ya's."

5 out of 5 stars Come On Boys, Call this Back and Put out LiveR for Real.......2006-06-11

Like my friends, I have to agree, the bootleg "LiveR than You'll Ever Be," is a diamond, while "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" is a lump of coal. That said, "Ya-Ya's" is still a pretty good live record, it's just not great. If I were the Stones, I'd pull this record and do what my friend Tiffany Ann from Black Diamond Bay suggested and put out the Bootleg for real. Come on boys, why don't you do that?

5 out of 5 stars Good, but the Bootleg was Great.......2006-06-10

Just think, the Rolling Stones could issue the best live record to ever come down the pike and the bootleggers couldn't do a thing about it, but I don't guess they will and so, if you can't get a copy of "LiveR," than you'll have to live with the inferior "Ya-Yas.

1 out of 5 stars I laugh at the folks trying to sell this used!.......2007-07-21

They have to be kidding! Especially after all of these horrible reviews,(I won't even bother, it's been said better than I could), death to rip off artists everywhere!!! ARGGHHHH (lol).

2 out of 5 stars For hardcore completist fans only.......2007-02-19

After reading some of the reviews here, I guess my standards are higher than some people's. I swear it seems that a CD of Jim Morrison passing gas could be released and it would probably get 4 or 5 stars here.

I have come to the conclusion that this release is a joke on YOU, the fan. Robby Krieger tooks various LP bootlegs of Doors concerts and put them on this set. The clicks and pops were removed, but it seems that no other processing was done. The sound is all over the place from abysmally bad to "good for an audience recording". Mostly it's just bad. It's a good thing that this was a limited edition. It's certainly not worth what it cost at the time it came out, nor is it worth what it's selling for now as a used item.

Most of these shows were not recorded professionally by The Doors, so this is the only document of some of these performances. Some of them are very good. There's an amazing performance of "Break On Through" from Copenhagen with Ray Manzarek on vocals because Jim was "sick" and unable to perform. I've never heard the song performed like that. There's a great version of "Light My Fire" on CD 4 that may be the best they've ever done of the song. However, everything on it is not a highlight. "L.A. Woman" shows the group at their self-indulgent worst. It's more than double the length of the studio version and it adds nothing to the song. It just contains various pointless instrumental doodles to lengthen it for no good reason.

If you are a casual fan, this is not for you. It's for hardcore "I must have everything officially released by the group at any price!" fans. The joke is on you because the group knows these songs sound bad and they just made you pay good money for it. They're not laughing with you, they're laughing at you.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Recordings!.......2006-10-20

Unfortunately, as I was born in '67, I was too young to have seen The Doors in concert. I have owned numerous Doors bootleg vinal as a teen. It appears that bootleg CD's are getting harder and harder to find these days. (Please contact me and let me know where to look!) This CD puts you in the seats at many different concert halls! You can feel the energy of each performance even though the recordings are not soundboard quality. This CD has numerous live recordings on it that I never knew existed! It was a strange experience to hear 'LA Woman' and 'Changeling' live, as well as many others. Good job Robbie! RIP Jim!

1 out of 5 stars when the music's over...............2005-07-19

you're going to wish you never bought this rip-off. the thing that kills this over priced 4 cd set is the sound quality. there is not a song on here that is not available in a better recorded version (studio or live) elsewhere. while the raps and monalogues are dispensable most of the intensity of the doors performance is lost due to the poor sonic quality. granted most boots from this era have low-fi sound but when a project like this is put out by the doors themselves (who have done an excellent job with the bright midnight releases) you expect more. unless you're a doors completist and have money to burn, save your hard earned cash.

2 out of 5 stars Getting a boot.......2004-08-04

At first glance, I can totally appreciate an effort to provide official releases of previously bootlegged material. On the other hand, this is a bit of an insult to Doors fans. This is Robbie Krieger's project, and it's telling. Krieger is famously anti-bootlegging, and even took legal action against an Italian bootlegger years ago after they released the Stockholm '68 shows.

First off, and the most insulting thing about this box, is the price. It's a bit of a joke, actually. This is equivalent to the cost of four bootlegs, more or less, and certainly close to the amount fans paid for actual bootleg Doors box sets. (The bootleg box set `Stages', released in the mid-90s by the Italian company Lizard, was in the same price range, and offered better quality in many places).

On the one hand, there's some very rare material offered, such as the last known live recording of The Doors with Jim Morrison from Dallas, 1970, which was only available on one bootleg CD release in the past. The Madison Square Garden material from 1969 was discovered in the 1990s in someone's collection. On the other hand, the atrocious sound quality of some of the other material may only attract die-hard fans who want very rare material. A few years ago, The Doors started Bright Midnight Records and began to release full, soundboard concerts through their official website. This, of course, was what fans were clamoring for years to get. In the past, and certainly around the release of Greg Shaw's amazing Doors On the Road book (which obviously reviewed Absolutely Live concert tapes that never saw the light of day) Manzarek said the tapes didn't exist(!)

The Doors' master plan is to re-release the same product over and over while trickling out new product (usually combined with old product.) Bright Midnight was a huge step forward, but Boot Yer Butt is not in the same vein.

Granted, some of the material here (particularly the shows cited above) are only available through old audience tapes. But why is it so expensive, and why don't they just release complete shows? The Garden material, the Dallas material, and the Singer Bowl can each fit on one disc, with room to spare. Most bootleg collectors insist on complete shows and source tapes. How expensive can it be to release 30-odd year old recordings you didn't even professionally record? And the doctoring is not the usual heavy-duty sonic trickery usually employed by the Doors for official live releases, since that would be damn hard to do with some of these tapes. The Long Beach show, I must say, is abominable, practically unlistenable on the bootleg CD I have, but it does have some very rare material.

Overall, this is a strange release. But it is definitely overpriced, way overpriced, for what you get. I would recommend this to die-hards who don't have the corresponding boots. Finally, we have the only live recordings of LA Woman, Love Her Madly, and the Changling. Tell All the People, Who Scared You?, Touch Me, Wild Child--rare live recordings of these tracks are all present. Those who collect bootlegs will likely have many of these or will simply prefer the bootlegs (as is common) but it's nice to see The Doors putting out more than just another Greatest Hits.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Live Albums. Ever........2006-06-13

I don't know how anyone can reccomend a bootleg recording over this professional job. You can't even hear Charlie Watts' drums on LiveR! This album, on the other hand, is the real deal, and ranks up there with the Who's Live At Leeds as one of the greatest 60's live recordings ever. Of course it would be better if it were expanded to cover the entire set list of the 69 tour, but until then, we have to make due with what we have, and that is great rockin' performances of early prime stones' material. A killer performance of Sympathy for the Devil, A loose rockin' Midnight Rambler and a High Octane Jumpin' Jack Flash are the highlights here, along with Street Fighting Man. If you don't mind a crappy recording on a portable tape recorder, the bootleg is not bad, but there are far superior bootlegs from the Taylor era.

4 out of 5 stars Solid debut album.......2004-09-12

Yer Album (1969.) James Gang's first album.

If there is one era of Joe Walsh's musical career that is severely underrated, it would have to be his years with the James Gang. Before going solo or joining the Eagles, this is where Walsh did lead vocals. It's a shame that the James Gang tends to get little recognition outside their hits Walk Away and Funk #49, because this era features some of the best stuff that Walsh ever recorded. The Gang's debut LP, Yer Album, was released in 1969. Read on for my review of it.

This album captures the James Gang at their most unique - before they went mainstream and focused on scoring hit singles. The band's sound stayed excellent from their formation right up to their final days, but it's their debut that captures the band in this unique state. The band kicks things off with the ever-so-bizzare introduction. This song is strange in that it uses classical music excerpts! Weird stuff, but it sure is an attention-getter! A slower, more melodic track entitled Take A Look Around comes next. The fact that this song never became a big hit for the band is just insulting, because this is a damn fine song. Third up is Funk #48, not to be confused with the more popular Funk #49. This is an excellent jam that truly captures the band in their prime. No, it's not as popular as the similarly-titled track from a later album, but it's equally excellent. Bluebird is a cover of an old Buffalo Springfield, and an excellent one too. It's more electric than the original version, which was more on the acoustic side, but solid nonetheless. Walsh's vocals really shine here. The next track is Lost Woman. This is blues-based rock at its finest. Drummer Jim Fox even serves up a drum solo for your listening pleasure! Stone Rap is an interesting little transitional piece. Not spectacular, but still worth listening to. The next track, Collage, is country-flavored rock reminiscent of the slower tunes that Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young recorded. I Don't Have The Time is straight-up classic hard rock, remiscent of the Who's stuff from the late sixties and early seventies (ironic, considering the band would be an opening act for that band during an early seventies tour!) The weirdest song on the album would have to be Wrapcity In English, which features orchestral work. Surprisingly, this only makes the album stronger! Fred is another excellent tune as only the James Gang could do, and the closer, Stop, is a song that seems to get a lot of praise from people, and why not? It's a damn fine closing song. Is the James Gang's debut their finest hour? It just might be.

This album was remastered and rereleased circa 2000, and I must say, the remastering really does make a difference. It's tough to take music recorded thirty years prior and make it sound better, but the record company manages to do just that with their James Gang remasters! Unfortunately though, the remastered versions of the albums have already become as hard to find as the original CD issues. Why? Only the Rides Again remaster is easy to find - the other ones (including this one) require some serious tracking down.

What more can be said? Yer Album is a James Gang masterpiece, and in my mind some of the finest material that the band ever recorded (although many of the fans would beg to differ - the sound does differ here from the band's later material.) The fact that this album is underrated fills me with rage, because this really is excellent material. If you want classic rock that almost certainly won't fail to please, or maybe you just want to check out Joe Walsh's early days, don't hesitate to purchase this or any other James Gang release.

4 out of 5 stars ditto for ' collage'.......2000-03-11

these two reviewers are correct, collage is a great tune with excellent and evocative lyrics and exemplary instrumentation and tasteful , not tacky strings. this is certainly a finer album than the next two james gang cds( rides again and thirds) its more cohesive. although some songs may be a little too lengthy( ie stop and lost woman,) walshs flashy but incredible guitar work is phenomenal. a very impressive first album. the cover of buffalo springfield's bluebird is excellent. the album is even humorous in places. fred is another brilliant track with an explosive wah wah ending that leads into stop. funk 48, not to be confused with the far better known funk 49 from rides again, is extremely catchy and yes, funky.this is a diverse and underappeciated gem of an album that is easily the high point of walsh's career in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence on Many Levels.......1999-12-24

The album is excellent. Collage is amazing. The original LP had a bonus for people with manual turntables. At the very center of the album, they recorded "Turn me over" at the end of the first side and "Play me again" at the end of the 2nd side. Excellence on many levels.

5 out of 5 stars the best album you've never heard.......1999-10-27

from what i have heard this is by far their best album. it sounds a little different from the rest of their stuff, but it is great. the song collage is one of the best songs i have ever heard. if you have never listened to this album, you are missing out on one of the best albums of all time.
