5 out of 5 stars Great covers of classic songs.......2005-04-27

In the eighties and early nineties, while pop music had ever-diminishing appeal for older listeners, Rose Marie built up a huge British fan base by singing covers of old songs from the twenties (or earlier) to the sixties with an occasional song of more recent origin. The big-voiced Irish lady recorded several albums, three of which are packaged together here. If I'd been choosing the three, I would have chosen Teardrops and romance (one of my favorites among her albums, the other being Sings just for you, included here) instead of So lucky (an excellent album in its own right though it only has eleven tracks - the other two have sixteen each) but as I upgraded all my Rose Marie albums to CD many years ago, I've got them all anyway.

Note - in the comments that follow, all references to charts are American except as stated. There were no UK record charts prior to November 1952 although sheet music charts were around.

Sings just for you, my favorite of the three here, contains songs that I was familiar with when I originally bought it on vinyl together with songs that I didn't recognize though (like all her albums except her debut, not included here) every song is a cover. The songs are taken from country music (Make the world go away, Legend in my time), gospel music (The old rugged cross), sixties pop (Hurt) and old standards. These oldies include Sunshine of your smile (#1 in 1916), When I leave the world behind (#5 in 1915), Cry (#1 in 1949), You'll never know (#1 in 1943), My mother's eyes (#8 in 1929), Let the rest of the world go by (#2 in 1920) I apologise (#1 in 1931) and Pal of my cradle days (#3 in 1925). Rose Marie did not limit herself to the big hits. One of the best songs (If I had my life to live over) only just made the top twenty in 1947.

So lucky relies more heavily on the old standards than Sings just for you. Among the classics here are Anniversary song (#1 in 1947), You're breaking my heart (#1 in 1949) and My Yiddish Momma (#5 in 1928), All the love in the world is actually Auld lang syne with a different title. Harbor lights, the most famous song here (apart from Auld lang syne), first became popular in 1937 when top versions made the top ten, Frances Langford doing best with her Hawaiian-styled version peaking at #6. In 1950, five versions hit the top ten with another just missing. Sammy Kaye's version went to #1. The Platters revived it in the rock'n'roll era and had an international hit with it. Rose Marie's version is one of the best though nobody is ever likely to beat Frances Langford's version. Not Sammy Kaye, not the Platters, not even Rose Marie, but all these covers are worth hearing.

Sentimentally yours has more old standards but also has a few songs from the late fifties and early sixties. Who's sorry now, originally from 1923, was revived by Connie Francis so fits both categories. Likewise, What do you want to make those eyes at me for (#3 in 1917) wasa later revived in Britain - by Eden Kane (UK #1 in 1959) and Skaking Stevens (UK #5 in 1987). Other oldies include Let me call you sweetheart (#1 in 1911), Holy city (#2 in 1900), Have you ever been lonely (#8 in 1933), Just one more chance (#1 in 1931) and I'll be seeing you (#1 in 1944). Love letters in the sand (Pat Boone) and Crazy (Patsy Cline) are of more recent origin, though they will still appear ancient to many people

I wasn't into the old songs when I originally bought these Rose Marie albums (or even when I upgraded them to CD). I was just in awe of her singing and wasn't too concerned about where the songs originated. Eventually, curiosity got the better of me, not just because of Rose Marie's music (there were others especially Willie Nelson) and now that I appreciate the old songs, I rate Rose Marie higher than ever. I suspect that, had she made the effort, she could have been a bigger star in America than she ever was in Britain. As it is, her music is almost forgotten now, but certainly not by me.

5 out of 5 stars Rose-Marie Rocks.......2002-04-26

There's something about the vocal stylings of soulful songstress Rose-Marie that always hits you in the gut. She's a deeply emotional singer that never shies away from "going for it" on a track. She's fond of recording cover versions of popular songs but, in my opinion, often exceeds the original performer's rendition. Her smoky voice somehow manages to resonate in your heart as well as in your ears....I love this album.

1 out of 5 stars Just get Kinks Kontroversy and Greatest Hits..........2006-07-20

...and call it good (for a start). Kinks Kontroversy is where Ray Davies' songwriting achieves liftoff -- one great song after another, even the blues reworks sound awesome!

The first two kinks albums are a few great singles surrounded by filler (arguably, OK). Not the best place to start. If you want the singles, get the Greatest Hits.

Song for song, Kink Kronikles is probably the best intro to the Kinks, but its focus is not hits, it's songcraft. Lots of obscure gems, the album that conviced me.

And then buy their other 10-15 great albums, e.g. Face to Face, Something Else, Village Green, and so forth.

        Enjoy the ride!
