From Amazon.co.uk
Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, "Rehab" becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it's echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. Winehouse's lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated: on "You Know I'm No Good", she's unapologetic about her unfaithfulness. But she can also be witty, as on "Me & Mrs Jones" when she berates a boyfriend with "You made me miss the Slick Rick gig". Back to Black is a refreshingly mature soul album, the best of its kind for years. --Ted Kord
Album Description
Hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a cross between Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill, British soul singer Amy Winehouse's U.S. debut, Back To Black hits the US amid a flurry of accolades, radio and TV buzz unprecedented in recent years for a young siren.
Her brassy mix of emotive vocals tinged with 60's girl-group stylings, sly funk, and anguished jazz, sparked the New York Daily News to crown Back To Black a "marvelous debut that would do Etta James proud" while New Yorker Magazine called her "a fierce English performer whose voice combines the smoky depths of a jazz chanteuse with the heated passion of a soul singer," and Spin Magazine affirming "there's never been A British star quite like her."
Back To Black smolders with a bristling fusion of old school doo-wop/soul inflected uprisings, (the charismatic singer/songwriter wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album) brewing instant classics such as the Shirley Ellis influenced "Rehab," the Supremes tinged title song "Back To Black," the aching "Wake Up Alone," and the album's closer, "Addicted."

Gets some getting used to.......2007-07-22
I bought this on a recommendation from a friend in the Uk and I've listened to it a few times and she grows on you. Very different, good beat
Something new and different to listen to!.......2007-07-22
I bought this CD after I heard "Rehab" on the radio - I thought the song was catchy and different from all of the others songs you hear now. I was able to preview the songs before I purchased it, which was great! I have really enjoyed the entire CD - it sounds like "old school" music, with modern lyrics. It makes me want to look into her previous CDs and music! This CD is worth listening to!
Amy Winehouse rocks the house!.......2007-07-21
I love the soulful, back alley, old rock, smokey sound of Amy Winehouse's voice. I bought this CD because of "Rehab," but all the songs are terrific.
Brilliant Performer!.......2007-07-21
The first time I heard Amy Winehouse I was floored. What a voice! I Googled her and could not get enough information on this amazing women. What I found shocked me! She's so young, she's Jewish and British! The hard living is scary (drugs, booze, & co-dependence), yet it makes me wonder if her 'hard living' is what gives her that soulfulness you would expect of someone much older. I wish her all the best because I want to continue hearing her amazing voice in future albums.
Retro soul revival---more like 4.5 stars.......2007-07-20
Who'd have thought a British white girl would come up with a CD like this that'd set everyone on their ears? Amy Winehouse's arrangements remind me very much of the girl groups of the 60's, but her smoky alto and serious adult lyrics are a definite indication that girl singers have come a long way, baby--and good for them.
Only nits to pick with "Back to Black." The vocal artifacting is somewhat jarring. I'm not sure if I got a bad press or they're doing it on purpose to sound like old vinyl, but pleasing to this listener. Additionally, this is not a CD I would simply put on and listen to for long. The material is all good, but for the most part it's all so bluesy, I have to mix it with some other more up soul and jazz to listen.

Back to black.......2007-06-17
Last month I had the opportunity to hear BACK TO BLACK by Amy Winehouse courtesy of a co-worker of mine. Normally my musical preferences is at the opposite end of the spectrum (darker and more aggressive) but in Amy's case I loved what I heard. I finally got a hold of my own copy of BACK TO BLACK. I have been listening to the cd non-stop. I really don't care for r&b music. Today's r&b is slickly overproduced. Amy's music has a vintage Motown influence with a splash of jazz thrown in to the mix. The production is gritty like a lot of old school r&b/soul music were back in the day. I like how unique Amy's vocals are. They have a slighty whiney, raspy edge but without being annoying. I think the standout track on the entire album is the hilarious "Rehab". Gotta love the lyrics. Another great track is "You Know I'm No Good". For some odd reason the song sounded like it would have been great for the great Shirley Bassey to sing. Not wild about the rap on the remixed version of the song. I wished the album wasn't so short but on the other hand it left me very eager to hear more from Amy.
LOVE IT.......2007-05-12
I have to admit, I discovered Amy Winehouse during a lunchtime visit to [...] and he's right...she's fantastic. What a great CD. Nostalgic and new at the same time. LOVE IT. I bought the "clean version" of her album, 'cause I have a child...though I don't know how "clean" it really is. Even "clean" the CD is totally amazing. I'm not crazy about the remix of "You Know I'm No Good" ...it just doesn't need the rap, but the rest of the songs are all good. It's unique, but familiar at the same time. Kind of a trashy, Spectorized-girl-group sound. Bloodshot-blue-eyed-soul, if you will. I love her voice. If I was rich, I'd buy it for all my friends.
A rare gem in a sea of crappy copycats & sound-alikes!.......2007-04-29
Fantastic album. As I said in my review title, this is a rare gem in a sea of crappy copycats and sound-alikes; in a world where everyone is trying to release a sound that sounds like everyone else sounds (does that make sense?), Amy Winehouse releases a throw-back to better musical days.
This album is a confirmation of the fact that good music will never die, even if dead music continues to live. The smooth R&B/blues/soul/jazz sounds are Mo-town all over again. And I am thrilled.
I am a musical purist and I don't care for much of what is released these days, but this album is a wonderful exploration of the old sounds with an updated groove and a funky edge.
Every song is at least good. In my humble opinion, the standouts are "Rehab", "You know I'm No Good", "Back to Black", "Tears Dry On Their Own", "Some Unholy War", and "He Can Only Hold Her".
To carry that one step further, I would point to true, amazing standouts as "ME & MR. JONES", a slow groove with motown like backing vocals and thick leading vocals from Amy. A true treat for the ears.
Also, "JUST FRIENDS". This has to be the BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM. A smooth, rasta-infused jazzy upbeat tune, slow and easy. This gal is amazing.
Man, can you say Lauryn Hill, Billie Holiday, Etta James? This lady has a beautiful future if she sticks with what got her to this point. Her vocals are purely classic, thick and textured like few others can. She has placed herself at the pinnacle of musical history, not just modern music.
Simply stated, this album is sardonic, muddled, ironic, melancholy rantings of an alcoholic (recovering or admitted, I'm not sure) siren.
A must have for any pure music lover.
I am very picky about music, sticking mostly to classics (classical, classic rock, mo-town, big-band, swing, blues or jazz) but this album breaks through the monotony of the typical crap of today and shines brightly.
WITHOUT A DOUBT, THIS SHOULD BE ALBUM OF THE YEAR AT THE GRAMMY'S. WON'T SURPRISE ME IF SHE'S OVERLOOKED BY THE SHEEP, BUT SHE DESERVES IT 100%.
Not such a .......2007-04-16
THIS REVIEW DEALS ONLY WITH THE EDITING OF CURSE WORDS FOR THE CLEAN ALBUM.
I bought the clean version of this album because she uses the "f" word in several songs on the other version and I have young children. The edited version is a disappointment. The curse words are clumsily half-blotted out, leaving an awkward space in the songs, while the phrase, "You don't mean [...] to me" remains untouched. I will still have to press the skip button, which negates the whole point of buying a clean version! If the Black Eyed Peas and Jay-Z can come up with alternate lyrics for some of their edited songs, then certainly Amy Winehouse's handlers could have done the same.
Oh My (insert word here)-ing God! I am an Amy Winehouse convert...........2007-04-05
People, if you haven't bought this album yet, go buy it today. There is a reason that people love this woman. Yes, she is unapologetically blunt (when it comes to sex, drugs and everything in between), yes, she dabbles with drugs in real life, and yes, her sound is authentic and DAMN good. I think I'm in love with that voice. I'll tell you why.....
Amy's voice is at once sexy, sensuous, expressive and seductive, and her band is seamless (great horn and percussive section!). What's more, her lyrics are fantastic and unabashedly honest (at times lewd, yes, and allude to her addiction to blow AKA cocaine). She is probably best known for "ReHab," "You Know I'm No Good" and "Back to Black." I feel like I am back in 1960, listening to soul, and then the expletives come pouring out....but, smooth as silk. You can't blame the girl for being angry. I don't know if Amy has just had some tough luck with men, or whether they just take delight in treating her like trash. At any rate, this woman totally channels the rush of emotions that comes with broken relationships, as well as the rush of drug addiction. If you want to hear a good example of the broken-ness, I reccomend "Me & Mr. Jones." (or most of the other tracks!)
This woman is amazing. I just hope (and I say this with sincerity), that she doesn't overdose before her remarkable career truly fluorishes worldwide. Note: As I said before, this album is explicit and has references to sex and drugs (quite graphic sex, at times). Still, this is one of the best soul albums I have heard. She puts Christina Aguilera and all of those wannabees to shame......Praise the lord, soul has returned!

4.5 star Hits album.......2006-10-11
With only 3 albums in the early 90's, the 4 man group from North Carolina, Jodeci, was one of the best R&B groups of their time, and maybe one of the best ever. Being a fan of rap I don't have many R&B CD's (maybe a dozen) but this is one I had to own. With 16 songs, you get some of their best as a group. Trax 1-4 are from "Forever My Lady" (1991), Track #5 is off MTV Unplegged album and is a remake of a Stevie Wonder song, Trax 6-9 are from "Diary of a Mad Band" (1993) and trax 12 & 13 are remixes of songs off that album, and trax 10, 11, 14 ,16 are from "The Show, The Hotel, The Afterparty" (1995) and #15 is a remix off that album. of the 16, 2 are classics, 1 is almost a lcassic, 4 are ok, the rest are good songs. I'd have liked to shear a few K-Ci & JoJo songs on here but I guess they only did Jodeci songs that all 4 members were a part of. Production is nice as well, DeVante Swing did 13 songs and Dalvun DeGrate did 3.

I ALREADY OWN "FOREVER MY LADY" ALSO & THIS COMPILATION COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. THERE ARE KEY REMIXES MISSING! "COME & TALK TO ME" (REMIX), "I'M STILL WAITING" (SWING MOB REMIX) & "FEENIN'" (ERICK SERMON REMIX). THE REMIXES WERE THE BEST SOUNDING TRACKS OF JODECI'S TENURE ON THE CHARTS! AND THEY ARE NOT HERE! WHAT A SHAME....BUT IT'S A NICE COMPILATION FOR THE AVERAGE LISTENER....
Classic R&B Group's Grestest .......2006-02-14
This compilation is very good, and it has all of the hits, from their first hit in 1991, Forever My Lady, to their last hit before they broke up, Love U 4 Life. This compilation is very good, as Jodeci set their standard of the meaning of a good R&B group. (Boyz II Men did not set a standard, their style was used before by New Edition)To this Day, Jodeci has influenced acts like 112, H-Town, Jagged Edge, and most importantly Dru Hill.
One problem with this compilation is that they really should've added on a 2nd disc, to include K-ci and Jojo's hits as a duo, instead of releasing their own greatest hits, which was really a waste of time.
Memories.............2005-11-29
WOW! What a great CD! It is so hard to review a greatest hits CD at the title says it all: GREATEST HITS!!! They had some of the biggest hip/hop & R&B hits of the 90's and they are just as great when I crank them up today. Each song has a memory or a story tagged to them taking me back to that moment in time. It's all here....not missing a beat. Some of the remixes we could have lived without but that still does not take away from all the great hits that are on here. They have all their great slow jams from "Come And Talk To Me", "Forever My Lady" to "Freek N You" & "What About Us".
This is a must have for those of you who jammed out to these songs when the originally came out or for those of you who just appreciate good ol' R&B. Truly a gem!
STAAAAY, FOR A LITTLE WHILE!!!.......2005-11-29
I am "Feenin" for the days when a guy group could sing!!! These bad boys were "IT" back in tha day!! Every song reminds you of brothers seriously singing to their girl. All the classic Jodeci songs: "Stay", "Come and Talk to Me", "Feenin" "Lately" are all on here. The only one missing is "Ride & Slide" from the "Diary of a Mad Band" album, but hey, I have that album so I'm ok with it missing from this complitation.
Here's to Jodeci! Come back fellas!

If the combination of veteran bluesman John Hammond with contemporary Philly hip-hop/soulman G Love (a.k.a. Garrett Dutton) sends shivers of fear down the spines of blues purists, the duo's collaboration here shows there is nothing to be worried about. Despite differences in age, backgrounds, and styles, they have shared bills and obviously respect each other's talents. Hammond, who has recently dipped his toes into songwriting waters after being solely an interpretive artist for nearly 40 years, jumps into the river with a whopping five originals. Love contributes a few as well, and the result is an album that rocks harder and with more intensity than most artists half Hammond's age can muster. Add covers from Little Walter, Junior Wells, and Tom Waits (Hammond's 2001 release Wicked Grin, comprised predominantly of Waits songs, is one of his biggest sellers), and the result is one of the finest and most diverse discs in the bluesman's bulging catalog. The stripped-down backing band of journeymen including bassist Marty Ballou, ex-Waits drummer Steven Hodges, and keyboardist Bruce Katz provides plenty of sparks with which Hammond--who plays rowdy guitar and sizzling harp throughout--can catch fire. Love adds his harmony vocals and rapping to his own "Tore Down," a near-perfect collision of blues and hip-hop and a song likely to get Hammond crossover acceptance with Dutton's more youthful jam-oriented audience. The jazzy "Eyes Behind Your Head" and a rollicking take on Dion's "If You Want to Rock and Roll" further expand Hammond's reach without either diluting his sound or distancing his core fans. In his mid-60s upon this album's release, he sounds loose, energized, and ready for another 40 years. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
It's a precious few artists who reinvent themselves at the age of 64, but blues luminary John Hammond proves himself the ultimate untraditional traditionalist as the dozen stellar songs on Push Comes to Shove illustrate. Push Comes to Shove marks an increased output in Hammond's original compositions- he penned five of the CD's 12 songs- and there's a bold collaboration with the album's producer, G.Love (the innovative and soulful Philly singer/guitarist and longtime Hammond fanatic), in the hip-hop-tinged blues of "Tore Down", as well as a handful of personalized renderings of traditional blues numbers, a musical modus operandi that has earned Hammond multiple Grammy nominations since his 1962 self-titled debut. Since then, Hammond has made 31 records and tours year-round, learning from and playing with musical greats and friends including Tom Waits, Muddy Waters, and Michael Bloomfield. Those unparalleled experiences and authenticity shine through brightly on Push Comes to Shove.

Mr Hammond,I Done Got The Blues........2007-07-17
I didn't realise John Hammond had a new release out. There I was standing in the blues section with a Muddy Waters double cd in my hand at a bargain price of 5 euros.I had 20 euros in my pocket.Just out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of his new release.I bought it,"damn the expense i'll walk it home".It was worth every mile.Exellent cd.
This Kills.......2007-06-13
I love John Hammond. Not only his instrumental skills but just his charisma as a performer. I think his delivery on this record matches the live performances I've seen him do, and that's saying something because he's great live!
Never Better.......2007-05-16
I think that this is possibly John Hammonds best effort yet,
and I have been listening to him since the 60's. He does some
very different things on this CD, and also writes many of the songs.
It all works out very very well. Friends who are not John Hammond fans
have told me that they also enjoy it very much. A terrific CD.
Nice man still rocks .......2007-05-14
i have no negatives about this cd.. It's good fun... It's not Muddy Waters etc... but that's a hill no one can climb..
Wonderful vocals... way high end guitar... And a fun sense of delivering blues lyrics.... I'm looking forward to seeing John and band on tour soon..
The new mono???.......2007-04-01
I've admired John Hammond for almost 39 years now. I'm glad that he's back to using an electric band again. This recording is killer! I think the fact that it was recorded in analog as opposed to digital is what gives it the raw edge.If you like your blues gritty and downright real, you'll love "Push Comes To Shove". Can this analog recording be the new mono for the 21st century? Hope more artists record this way...it's warmer...or in this case...HOT!! This CD and John's recent output remind me of his early electric Vanguard and Atlantic recordings. This guy is an unheralded Americon icon.

Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14
I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.
Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.
The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)
The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.
"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.
"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.
"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.
When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.
To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it
The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05
I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!
Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19
You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.
What Great Music.......2003-05-11
I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.
super.......2003-04-17
What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

While some artists feel the need to reinvent themselves on a regular basis or to throw together records chockfull of guest stars in order to revive flagging careers, J.J. Cale remains content to continue his reign as king of the laid-back guitar groove. Anyone who thinks it is easy to continually wring new permutations out of the back-porch choogle--Cale's calling card for near three decades--should try it some time. A little violin ("My Gal"), a stab of horns ("Chains of Love"), or some vibraphone tones ("New Lover") is all he needs to freshen the mix. While artists like Eric Clapton and Lynyrd Skynyrd have scored by adding testosterone to Cale's tunes, they would be the first to admit that his music is no less potent for being more relaxed. In fact, it's the off-hand manner in which he presents his political tunes--"Stone River" (ecology), "The Problem" (the President), and "Homeless"--that gives them their poetry and power. --Michael Ross

Is this the best yet - A great album for the J.J. virgin.......2007-02-20
J.J. has done it again. Distinctly J.J. but once again with some great new sounds - this one is as fresh as ever. Is this his best yet? - could well be. Right from the kick off,"My Gal","Chains of Love","New Lover" and on and on. A must have for Foot Tapping Guitar Fans.
Great CD.......2006-10-29
I can listen to J.J. Cale night and day and never get enough. I enjoy all kinds and styles of music but this guy rates towards the top. This cd is 5 stars all the way. If you like Clapton and Knopfler mixed with blues and a soulful voice, you are going to like this cd and J.J. Cale.
True Chill Out Music.......2006-08-14
Great music for a relaxing sunny day at the beach. Despite some serious themes in the lyrics, you can put a smile on your face, have your favorite beverage or whatever, and kick back for the sunset. Having owned Clapton's 461 Ocean Blvd. album for 20 years, I see why people compare Cale to Clapton, though it should be the other way around. Great album from start to finish.
6+ stars.......2006-04-25
I sometimes wonder what makes the difference between an artist and a shooting star ? I'm listening to Cale's music for almost thirty years. Actually I grew with it. From one album to another he never ceases to surprise me. Probably the difference that I'm talking about lies in some magic blend of musical wisdom, imagination, loose attitude and passion for creation. Cale has them all. This album makes no exception. It has everything from each one of his previous approaches: the misty mood of "Naturally", the punchy sound of "Troubadour", the stompy rhythms of "Shades"... For any Cale passionate this is a must. And the sound of the CD is wonderful. Just listen to "The Problem" and "Fancy Dancer" and you know what I'm about.
Amazon, is there a possibility to grant him 6 stars ?...
one step Album-to Tulsa and back.......2005-10-19
I have been listening to JJ Cale since the 60's and this is his finest work. Every tune is a catchy lick.

Formed out of various Oakland-based bands in the early '70s, Tower of Power was the West Coast answer to the various rock horn bands popular during that period. But where their rivals relied on catchy horn charts and bland lyrics (Chicago instantly comes to mind), Tower of Power was funkier, grittier, and a lot greasier than any of their contemporaries. Back to Oakland isn't one of their strongest albums. After two promising openers, "Oakland Stroke" and "Don't Change Horses in the Middle of the Stream," the set slips into more shapeless jams and is hobbled by the band's tendency toward mundane lyrics. Fans can savor the strong horn section work throughout, but this isn't the logical starting point for newcomers to TOP--a better bet is their second album, East Bay Grease. --Tom Vickers

East Bay... All The Way.......2007-01-02
What can I tell you about some of my homeboys... from the Bay. You gotta be ready for variety when you listen to ToP, because normal and ordinary is not them. They mix rock with soul with jazz with anything and everything else that sounds good. One of my favorites.
Excellent Groove, Never Gets Old, Squib Cakes Highlight.......2005-04-28
Several tunes on 'Back to Oakland' feature Tower of Power at their best. One in particular that keeps me coming back is the deeply funky instrumental track, 'Squib Cakes'.
Featured soloists include a short, mellow guitar solo from Bruce Conte, followed by Greg Adams' fluegelhorn that first lurks in the pedal range (leading one to believe it's a trombone!) and then soars brilliantly higher and higher to a dramatic finish.
Tenor madness abounds from lead saxman Lenny Pickett (known primarily for his work as lead Tenor for the Saturday Night Live band), wailing in-tune in the difficult altissimo range (jazz musicians call these 'freak notes' because they are not notes typically included in the range of the instrument ... ), while at the same time refusing to compromise on excellent rhythmic and melodic ideas throughout.
Chester Thompson completes the soloistic foursome with a chunky Hammond organ solo that takes you back to a smoky bar in LA in the early 70s - without the probability of cancer. Lyrical yet hard-driving, Thompson lulls us first into his solo space by filling in behind the band as they chant 'Squib Cakes', then takes off on his own flight, delving out perfect 16th-note runs as though Bach suddenly had learned some jazz Hammond himself. In the middle of the solo, as if to a testament to the tightness of the groove, Thompson lingers on a treble note in his right hand, chunks out chords so symmetrically with the rest of the rhythm section with his left, that in the days of hearing this on vinyl, I wondered if my record was skipping through that section!
To finish the groove, at the end of Thompson's solo, the horns return to fill in a bridge with quick triplets. After he closes, we're back to the head to close out the tune.
Even with so much to savor, this syncopated gem will leave you hungering for more, even after the final stroke of the last chord. The musicianship and tightness of their groove more than make up for the bland lyrics on the album's other tunes. I have listened to this album for 30 years and revel in its freshness every time I spin it. I recommend it as a definite primer for anyone wishing to explore Tower of Power's "sound."

ONE WORD: AWESOME!!!.......2004-08-13
I should have written this a long time ago. This album (CD) changed the way I looked at music, at groups, at the meaning of life . . . well, maybe not that drastically. But this album started a huge love affair between me and the Tower of Power. I'd never heard anything even approaching their level of musicianship, professionalism or tightness as a horn-based group. I'd heard a ton of groups up to this point in time: Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chicago and that group that made VEHICLE being the most prominent. Even Buddy Miles on his BUDDY MILES LIVE album (OOP) had a tremendous horn section But none of them highlighted the horn sections consistently. None of them could come close to this group of musical prodigies.
Every cut was a joy to listen to. Even the split-up version of OAKLAND STROKE was just a fun jam. My impressions of the group: Aside from Jimmy Smith, I hadn't heard a Hammond B3 sound so funky till I heard Chester Thompson. Aside from Jr. Walker, I hadn't experienced anyone who had such masterful control of their altissimo range till I heard Lenny Pickett. The supporting horns (Kupka, Castillo, Adams and Gillette) had their own vibe and despite a lack of solo time, managed to make a significant impact on every song. And for bass work, nobody was touching Rocco Prestia. In his true prime, Rocco's style was totally individual. David Garibaldi was what I considered a phenomenal drummer. All his rhythms were crisp and unique . . . playing off the sycopation of the bass, organ and guitar. He had a serious ear for rhythms. Bruce Conte was one of the most underrated of the crew, but his guitar work was ahead of its time. There were traces of jazz and some island influences that I hear very plainly.
Lenny Williams' vocals really set a definitive tone for this group. They were distinctive, fluid and heartfelt. His voice made the puzzle complete; put the icing on the cake; lit the cigarette after some mind-blowing sex.
My favorite selections: Without a doubt, JUST WHEN WE START MAKIN' IT ranks as one of my all-time favorite tunes. It exemplifies what the group is all about. It's jazzy, it's laid back, but it drives relentlessly, fills you with emotional fire and thrills your music sense to its fullest. Lenny's vocals are soaring and urging, Pickett's sax solos are powerful and sensual, the staccato background horns are poignant and dynamic, the organ break not only resets tempo, but turns into a thing of genius. CT creating a series of rippling, bubbling organ lines against the crescendo of the entire horn contingent and the incomparable Garibaldi drums - cymbals crashing, bass tom rolling, the incredible beat he lays down was too innovative. I was overwhelmed the first time I heard this. I must have worn out the vinyl from overplaying it. Actually, I have owned this album/CD around 12 times since 1973, from having to repurchase it after having it stolen or borrowed out indefinitely.
Other favorites: TIME WILL TELL, CAN'T YOU SEE, CITY LIGHTS. And no instrumental rocked my soul for a long time like SQUIB CAKES. Chester wrote a lot of songs in some other albums, but they all sounded like mutated versions of SQUIB CAKES . . . like distant cousins or wannabe next door neighbors.
In all, I really love this album. It's been part of my life for over 30 years. And it just sounds better everytime I put it on.
SQUIB CAKES!.......2004-07-24
Squib Cakes is such an awesome song. "Dont Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream)" is great too. This is an awesome CD. GET IT
...like a bowlegged monkey.......2003-10-17
Of all the Tower of Power albums (yes albums) and CDs I own, this has to be the best of the bunch. You have the band at a great point in their history with one of the premier lineups. The stand out song for me on the album is "Can't You See", a great song, especially live. Other good tunes include "Man from the Past" and "City Lights", which I would suggest while spending some time up at Coit Tower in San Francisco. If you were to get one TOP CD, I would say to get this one.

A Classic..........2007-01-16
Here's one of the GREAT releases of 2006. Unfortunately, it will be missed by most. I had a rare opportunity to see Lee Roy Parnell perform at a small and intimate concert this past summer in Wimberley, Texas (warm Texas night, cold beer... priceless!). Standing close to the stage (dance floor), I was struck with the vast extent of this man's talent. He does it all... incredible guitar player; strong, soulful voice; beautiful and intelligent lyrics; stage presence; audience interaction; everything. I hadn't heard any of the tracks from "Back to the Well" before the concert, but immediately fell in love with all of them. "Something out of Nothing," "Just Lucky That Way," and "Saving Grace" are three of the best songs I've ever heard... beautiful. Buy this CD and play it over and over... Look Lee Roy up and see him in concert next time he's in town. He's the real thing.
Under-appreciated artist, great talent, great guy!.......2006-07-19
Last Saturday evening (July 15th 06), I had the opportunity to meet Lee Roy Parnell. I have been a huge fan for several years after being introduced to his music by a friend who was with me and able to meet him as well. The concert was in an out of the way place in Massanutten Ski Resort in Virginia and the turn out was low. I was tremendously dissappointed with the crowd in attendance. Although they were big fans of Lee Roy, they were quite lackadaisical and quiet. It was interesting that they cheered wildly for the local start up groups that were horrible (to say it kindly)... A very unsophisticated bunch. This is not to cast aspersions on Virginians (being one myself) but I was literally embarassed.
What made the 3 1/2 hour trip was when Lee Roy Parnell came on the stage. At the first note of his guitar I felt like I had found my place in musical mecca! I absolutely love his music. What I was about to find out though was that I really like him. He paid no mind to the small crowd (which had to be a failure of promotion by the resort) and just played his heart out. After the concert, he availed himself to anyone who wanted to meet him. I was up near the front of the line and, trying to be courteous, I tried to be fast as I got his autograph on his new CD - Back to the Well - and was surprised when he really wanted to talk. We discussed his group, especially his drummer, and discussed my name, Darcy, which he immediately recognized as Irish stock and mentioned that he had a cousin by that name. I was surprised at how he really reached out to my friend and I and every other attendee. He is a very personable guy possessed with great talent. I wish more people would listen to his music and get hooked as I have.
As far as "Back to the Well", I highly recommend that you listen to it along with his earlier, more well known music. He is a great guy and his music smokes!
Parnell's "Back to the Well" is an Oasis that Refreshes.......2006-04-11
Prime Cuts: Saving Grace, Old Soul, Daddies and Daughters
No one imbues their country with such an ineluctable funky blues like Lee Roy Parnell. Yet, Parnell still has the ability to stay commercially assessable. Signed to the most temerarious Universal South Records, whose roaster include gutsy left of center artists such as the Notorious Cherrybombs and Shooter Jennings, this is Parnell's second chance at a major label. After his substantial stint at Arista Records with a string of hits such as "What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am," "On the Road" and "Love without Mercy," one would have expected Parnell to buy in to the Music Row hit-making machinery of recycling today's country hit songs. But, this Texas-bred musician has wisely chose to follow his blues-infested heart in creating one of his most honest and engaging records. On the other hand, Parnell has not given in to an over indulgence in his craft, making this record far too idiosyncratic. Rather there is a cadence that welcomes the uninitiated and given the right promotion, "Back to the Well" ought to appeal en masse.
Of note is the presence of Tony Arata's pen. Arata, whose songs has made it to the catalogs of Garth Brooks ("Anonymous"), Patty Loveless ("Handful of Dust") and Emmylou Harris ("I Hear a Call") among others, shares the same ink with Parnell on 6 stellar cuts. Best of which is "Old Soul," a bluesy lament about a lady who has come to grips with the negativity of life, finds its gravitas in Parnell's sensitive vocal nuances. Though Patty Loveless has delivered a tour de force version of "Old Soul" on her latest CD "Dreaming My Dreams," Parnell's own version does not pale to Loveless'. Despite Parnell's bearded tough guy disposition, he does get intimate on one of his best ballads "Daddies and Daughters" which also features the tender backing vocals of daughter Alison. Kicking up his heels with a thumping backbeat, "Something Out of Nothing" is another Arata/Parnell gem, this time finding Parnell rocking along a la his "Lucky Me, Lucky You" days.
Of the tracks untouched by Arata, "Saving Grace" is a stop-in-your-tracks love ballad with a celestial gospel-like overtone. On the more commercial side "Just Lucky That Way," finds a bewildered Parnell unable to decipher the complexities of love. While on "The Hunger" Parnell wades in the Bruce Springsteen territory complemented by Parnell's signature gruff yet searching vocals. Nevertheless, on the title cut, "Don't Water It Down" and "You Can't Lose Them All" are typical Parnell rockers with his signature searing jabs of electric slide and propulsive drum beats. They are all made for good listens, but they veer on the side of ordinary. Further, "Cool Breeze," the album closer, is a forgettable instrumental that has become a staple typical of a Parnell CD.
Overall, there's more on "Back to the Well" that satisfies than disappoints. In a genre where many country songs hinges upon cliches and what itches the ears of the audience, Parnell sings without any scaffolds. For those who have a low threshold in monotony, "Back to the Well," with its variety of styles, themes and tempos, ought to satiate. Indeed, in the desert of sound-alikes, "Back to the Well" is an oasis that refreshes.
A True Gem from an underappreciated musician.......2006-03-18
Quite simply, Lee Roy Parnell does not get nearly enough credit for the music that he makes. For years he has been putting out records featuring fantastically written, honest songs, impeccable slide guitar, and a voice that truly delivers.
Back to the Well might be the best overall album he has ever put out, from the funky open of the title track right through to the sweet and loving "saving grace" the album has something for everyone.
Looking for something inspiring, "Old Soul" fits the bill. Want an uptempo bluesy-rocker to hit the road with "Don't Water it Down" or "The Hunger" will fill your tank. Looking for a song to make the tough guys get a little teary eyed? check out "Daddies and Daughters" - with vocal help from his own daughter.
Lee Roy Parnell is back making great music and I for one am glad he is.

Goin' Back traces a century of Crescent City musical history, starting in the mid-19th century with Louis Moreau Gottschalk, a classical composer influenced by the African chants and slave dances he witnessed in New Orleans' Congo Square. With support from some of the city's most prominent musical pioneers (including Danny Barker, Pete Fountain, and the Neville Brothers), Dr. John breathes new life into the work of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, James Booker, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis, and Huey Piano Smith. From early jazz to junkie blues, Goin' Back covers it all, ranging from well-trod standards ("Basin Street Blues," "Careless Love") to otherwise forgotten jewels ("I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say," "How Come My Dog Don't Bark"). What's most remarkable is how utterly alive and timeless it sounds. --Keith Moerer

Dr. John goes back to his roots...and does it respectively........2007-05-25
That New Orleans and Mardi Gras feeling is all around when you slip this into your machine. New Orleans native Dr. John does a once-in-a-lifetime project paying tribute to his hometown and the colorful customs and lifestyles of the magical town. Every year when Mardi Gras comes around, New Orleans comes alive, and that's where a real celebration happens. That same spirit is as every bit as alive in this masterfully created album. Dr. John covers the entire New Orleans musical heritage in these 18 tracks that re-create that authentic sound so well. Listen to the horn and the rhythm sections and you'll feel it. He takes a nod to all the legends like Leadbelly ("Good Night Irene"), Fats Domino ("Blue Monday"), and Louis Jordan ("Do You Call That a Buddy"). He even takes you back to 1850 with the Gris-Gris chant of "Litanie des Saints." Legendary performers took part in this album like the Neville Brothers, Al Hirt, and Pete Fountain. That detracting factor is that a handful of these songs are a bit pessimistic in subject, but the music is very exquisite. A true landmark album from Dr. John, a very unique artist who paid a great respect and tribute to his hometown in these arrangements of such timeless classics. It makes it a perfect soundtrack for a Mardi Gras celebration, too.
New Orleans through a prism of elegant madness.......2005-11-29
Dr John has had a hard time fore several decades living up to the promise of his amazing debut album. With this disc, however, he finally (amazingly, for the first time) records in New Orleans and covers a set of New Orleans standards. Althogh "covers" is perhaps the wrong word. Perhaps the highlight is a serious remake of "Basin Street Blues", where the original "good darkie" lyrics are re-written to describe the NO that Mac knows, rather than a place where (charmingly) the "black and the white folks meet". However, it is matched or bettered by excellent versions of such classics as "Goodnight Irene" (perhaps not the song one would think of as a natural for Dr John).
Dr. John: The Voodoo King.......2005-08-23
I picked up this album while in New Orleans for Jazz Fest 2005. I found it at a discount price while shopping in the LA Music Factory. This album now remains in my rotation on a regular basis. This was my first Dr. John album and he blew me away. I knew after listening to this album I would be a fan for life. When I think of New Orleans Louis Armstrong and Wynton Marsalis come to mind...add Dr. John to that list!
Lushly made, just plain outstanding music.......2004-10-03
One of my top 10 favorite albums from the 1990s. The vocal interpretations of these classic New Orleans songs are fabulous. The production is lush, and in this case, all the orchestration works to propel this album into something that is both fun and exquisitely beautiful. You can listen to this album again and again and always find something new that's interesting. A finely detailed portrait of New Orleans music intelligently done.
Disappointing, with a few good tracks.......2004-03-07
I am a fan of blues and roots music who bought this album based on its interesting set list of classic songs and its rave reviews from various sources. Unfortunately, I found the album way overproduced. There is too much bland orchestra, chorus, and strings that smother the life of the songs. A few good tracks are exceptions: "Fess Up" is an affectionate solo piano tribute to Professor Longhair, "Cabbage Head" has amusing lyrics and a smaller combo that doesn't overload the sound, and "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal You" has some good moments where you hear the interplay of individual instruments. But overall I would recommend this album only if you love Dr. John's voice and want to hear what he does with these classic songs. If you love his piano, go for the solo "Dr. John Plays Mac Rebannack." If you want to hear New Orleans blues played with great piano, vocals, and backup band, buy "Crawfish Fiesta" by Professor Longhair. To my ears, "Goin' Back to New Orleans" is overrated.
