Album Description
Live from Montreux Casino, Switzerland, Oct 4th 1969. An astonishing discovery, this show was discovered on quarter inch tape, mixed live at the time. Some overloads in places prevented a full-blown release, but it remains one of the best live recordings yet to surface. Seven tracks packaged in a gatefold digipak. Purple Records. 2003.

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Performance.......2007-03-31
This is an an authentic, accessible, entertaining, and deeply satisfying performance. Although I like all of the principal singers, my two favorite are Clive Revill as Ko-Ko and Jean Allister as Katisha. For me, the key to a successful Gilbert and Sullivan performance is that it is not only funny, but also touching. In my opinion, Revill and Allister score high in both departments. In their final scene together, they are both vulnerable and hilarious at the same time. One small detail about this recording that bothers me slightly is that the overture has been rewritten. It is a nice medley, but I miss the original. I understand that Sullivan did not write it, but it is based on his tunes and I've always liked it. But don't let that stop you from getting this recording. I consider it to be the best Mikado on record.
ARTICULATE MIKADO.......2007-01-31
Articulate - both in diction and in musical interpretation - this re-release of the 1960's Sadlers Wells recording of Gilbert and Sullivan's MIKADO is quite delightful. The care and loving detail, which were the keystones of SWO's productions of G & S and operettas in the 1960s onstage, are preserved here in Alexander Faris's splendidly gutsy interpretation of the most popular of all the Savoy Operas; if his speeds are at times too leisurely, all can be forgiven just to hear the superb soloists; the expert diction of Denis Dowling as Pooh-Bah; the heroic tones of John Wakefield as the Wandering Minstrel; Marion Studholme singing the best "Sun Whose Rays" you will ever here on disc; Jean Allister as a correctly dominating Katisha, (hurray - a real contralto!), with a superb glissando in "Beauty and the Bellow"; the glorious Pat Kern as Pitti-Sing making so much more of the traditional soubrette; John Heddle Nash giving a singing and acting lesson with Pish-Tush's only solo; and the droll Clive Revill so completely at ease in the comic role of Ko-Ko, (though it is strange that his running out of breath at the end of his verse in the Act Two trio was not corrected!) I have to say that this recording of THE MIKADO puts all other D'Oyly Carte and Glyndeboune recordings in the shade, and the inclusion of highlights from Sadlers Wells IOLANTHE from 1962 is just an added bonus - the overture in this is simply stunning, and how good to hear Eric Shilling, Heather Begg, and Elizabeth Harwood obviously enjoying themselves so much singing Sullivan's most musical of scores.
Finally, a worthy recording of the Mikado!.......2004-03-03
It really does make a difference, when performing Gilbert and Sullivan, to use singers who can act rather than the other way round. Every soloist here utilizes a very forward, "in-the-mask" vocal placement, which not only reduces the need to force, but helps to render their diction crystal-clear. Sample Jean Allister's Katisha. No plummy, oratorio contralto tones for her. Here is all the waspish, incisive malevolence that is already there in the writing; she just reveals it by singing and pronouncing the texts in a light and unforced manner. This approach helps to restore the vim and vigor to an opera that can often seem tired and "played-out" to modern ears. If the recording has any weakness, it may possibly be found in the Yum-yum and Nanki-Poo. Marion Studholme is perhaps more shrill than is necessary, while John Wakefield seems to have wandered in from a performance of Dream of Gerontius. These are minor quibbles, however. The overall excellence of the performance quells any doubts, with Alexander Faris' conducting a model of transparent clarity. The Iolanthe excerpts are also well-done, but it's Mikado that is the jewel here. Don't hesitate; buy it today!

Best Hip Hop record ever........2005-11-03
I've debated this a lot with myself, but yes. This is the best hip hop album ever. There is no bad tracks, no cheesy lines. This album should have taken American down, buckled at the knees. This is what music was supposed to sound like now. Lets wait 20 years, I'll still be listening to this album and we all will be laughing at 50 cent when he's on the Surreal Life with Lil John.
It's one of the greatest ever...........2005-01-26
This (along with Cannibal Ox's "The Cold Vein") is one of the best and most influential underground hip-hop albums ever. It's really hard to find, but if you see this selling for 20-25 dollars, buy it. It will change your life and the way you look at hip-hop. The songs on here are so well put together. The beats suit the music well, nothing really stands out, but it's not supposed to, it just sets the mood. Every single song on here is worth listening too. This is one skip-free album. The mc's are slug(atmosphere), dose-one(themselves), Sole, and Alias(now turned producer and part time lyricist). All of these guys bring something to the table that the others could not. The hardest part of this album(besides the concepts) is getting used to dose-one's voice. It took me almost a year to finnaly get into his high pitched, raspy voice. Don't let that discourage you however, one unique voice out of four only adds to the enjoyment. If your into hip-hop that makes you think and not about "gun's b*tches and weed" get this. You will not regret this purchase. Trust me.
Anticons best.......2004-12-03
Although I wouldn't call this cd a classic it is still very good.
What cd wouldn't be good with mc's like Slug,Sole, and Alias. The cd wouldn't really be any different if Dose-One was not in it. Dose-one isn't a classic Underground mc like slug, but very few are. You should definetly buy this cd if you're into labels Rhymesayers and Anticon.
10 STARS ! THE SICKEST ANTICON CD EVER !!!.......2004-11-02
This is the sickest anticon cd ever if you like slug, dose, sole, and alias then this cd is is for you it has the sickest beats i've ever heard and some of the hardest flows. the sickest tracks on this cd are, the scarecrow speaks, and where the wild things are. it will change your perspective on how you view the world. this is one the very few cd's that I label classic Hip-Hop it is in my top ten. so do yourself a favor grab this cd before it goes out of print believe me you'll love it specially since it has production by the dj abilities, ant, jel, moodswing, and alias. much love to all the deep puddle(slug, sole, dose, alias)

Customer Reviews:
I HAVE seen this CD and really like it........2003-10-31
This is a two CD set on which, though several of the cuts are edited, more than half appear in their entirety. What a splendid set they make! I've always been a fan of the musical grandeur evinced in British Imperial music. This album, particularly the first disc, offers music from this genre in spades, both instrumental and choral works. Hubert Parry's "I Was Glad" shines out in dazzling brilliance. Listening to Walton's warhorse "Crown Imperial" and Elgar's "Coronation March" we can visualize the full ceremony of state. And listening to Coates' "Dam Busters March" brings to mind all the hope of a proud people fighting, down to its last collective drop of blood, a mortal threat being wrought by an invader's ruthless forces. I'm sure this sounds melodramatic, but after all, total emotion is what this music is all about. I might ask for a cut or two less of Coates or Walton, not because those recordings were not excellent, but because, instead, I'd have liked a cut from Bridge, Tippett, or even Rutter. But, excepting that slight objection, this CD duo does its job most excellently and well.

Customer Reviews:
Soulful.......2002-08-30
Weekender is a sheffield-based team of uk producers/artists who have, for a number of years, released deep, atmospheric tunes for the underground dance label Toko. Most of songs included on this latest full-length release where originally formatted to 12" vinyl and are now considerably rare and therefore not easily acquired. All exude a warm, jazzy feel and consist mostly of live instruments and/or deep vocals led by the talented Azeem/Si Brad/Alex Moran production team. Of particular interest are the cuts "On the One" and "Spirit in your Soul" which delve in the human psyche with rich melody lines and soul-piercing lyrics. Azeem's angelic voice deftly captures the essence of each song with aplomb not easily achieved by many singers of the genre - something which is sorely missing in much of today's high-energy electronic dance music.
This release comes highly recommended as it will someday be a much sought-after classic. Seek with earnest!
