A return to their former glory days, Snakes and Arrows shows this seminal prog rock band reclaiming some of the sonic territory that they'd lost over the past few years. It's not certain what contributed to this artistic rebirth, but Rush has crafted a historical and emotional odyssey that shows many both where they've been and where they're going--from the baroque soundscapes of "The Main Monkey Business," reminiscent of their earliest work to the seductive almost folkloric urgency of "The Way the Wind Blows," which is as dangerous, anxious, and prophetic as anything that Arcade Fire or Mars Volta is doing currently. Main Lyricist Neil Peart has spent the last decade getting over the death of his wife and daughter, and those tragic events have given his songwriting more depth and gravity as he explores the strengths and limitations of faith in both metaphoric and literal detail. While never didactic or ponderous, this disc is really an instruction manual for how one conducts themselves with grace and hope through unendurable pain and the vagaries of life. Gone is much of the shrillness of their earlier incarnations--Geddy Lee's trademark high pitch shrieks have mellowed considerably and Alex Lifesong's guitar playing has an assurance and freedom that can only come with age. --Jaan Uhelszki

Album Description

Anthem/Atlantic recording group Rush return with its first new collection of original material in nearly five years, entitled "SNAKES & ARROWS." The album was recorded in the fall of 2006 with Gammy Award-winner Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver) and Rush co-producing. "It's hard to describe," Geddy Lee recently told Revolver re: "SNAKES & ARROWS.""It's big, it's bold, and I think it's some of the best work we've done in years. I'm really pleased with the quality ofthe songs, and there's lots of playing on it. " Rush - Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart - will trumpet the release of "SNAKES & ARROWS" with a full-scale North American tour, the renowned trio's first since 2004's "An Evening with Rush: 30th Anniversary Tour."

5 out of 5 stars Concise review.......2007-07-22

My Rush fanatic friends and I we're going to wait until the Snakes & Arrows concert before forming an opinion. The music didn't seem familiar - as a Rush album should sound like - on the first listenings and some of us we're a little puzzled.

Geddy said in an interview, "We wanted to do a couple of different things musically and present a fresher, more original approach. We wrote a lot of acoustic and bass and tried to make sure we were not seduced by techno. The aim was to produce intelligent melodies and songs that were strong and meaningful, and I think we did."

I agree. Fresher and original.

After a couple of months (and about 10 listenings) and a rocking concert, the music from this album just rocks. Very powerful. On the way home from the venue and the next week, the first 7 songs of this album didn't leave me. From the concert, the old familiar tunes were completely out done by the songs from this album. I believe they played 8 of them. They've definetly departed on something new, it just takes sometime to appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album!.......2007-07-21

Snakes and Arrows is one of those albums that you must listen to a few times before the genius of it truly hits you. A very nice offering from one of the greatest and most technical group of guys to have ever recorded music.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Rush is Back........2007-07-21

The boys from Toronto are back into the swing of putting out great music. I was delighted to hear the samples from this album on the Rush website. So much so, I did something that I have't done in nearly 20 years - I bought a new Rush album. I've been a die-hard Rush fan for a long, long time, but I haven't connected with their newer music since they had a "creative" change after Signals.

I am so glad that they have gone back to their roots on this album. These guys can still make great music. Don't get me wrong, everyone has low periods. Rush just lost itself for a while. I and many others like me have been waiting for Rush to put out another "Fly by Night" or "Kings" quality album. Rush is back, folks. Its not the early Rush, but nobody should expect that after over 30 years of rocking. It is somehow familiar, like a stranger that you feel like you know immediately.

I am very pleased with this album; I been jamming to it on my MP3 at work for days now. Welcome back, Gents, I missed you!

4 out of 5 stars JARR - Just Another Rush Review =).......2007-07-19

Well, it's been several months since Snake & Arrows came out, and I've had plenty of time to give it it's fair consideration. Rush has never been a band whose music was immediately accessible to most people, they put a lot into their music and it takes a lot to get the "Big Picture" from it. There hasn't been a Rush album since Test For Echo or Moving Pictures that immediately grabbed me and struck me as being absolutely awesome and rockin.

With that said, after much time and listening, I'm finding Snakes & Arrows to be one of the most beautiful and meaningful albums Rush has released in a very long time (well, it's been quite a long time since their last album too :)

There's a lot in this album that seems to describe the exact circumstances I've been finding myself in, in the last few years (sadly.) But as usual, I also found a good bit of inspiration to keep going through life, despite it's unfairness, meanness, misfortunes..

How unfortunate I was not able to see them in concert this time around. The thought that Rush won't be around much longer is very sad to me, but inescapable considering their age. But, I do hope they will be around for many decades to come, producing new music for us to reflect on and enjoy :)

5 out of 5 stars Master Musicians.......2007-07-19

A wicked comeback for Rush in the '00s. They are officially back with a tight performance. Excellent guitar sounds and layering are found throughout 'Snakes and Arrows' with often hypnotic vocal melodies.

You don't have to know anything about music to recognize the Hemispheres chord on track 1. With the next 3 songs, I get a strange but intriguing hook vibe found only on early 80's album 'Signals'. Also note there is a brilliant acoustic guitar short piece "Hope".

A lacking blues jam intro and oblique chorus hooks grouped later on 'Snakes and Arrows' don't represent old rush or new. This is one of many reasons why I would not rank this in the top 5 best Rush ever.

But to end on a positive note, I'm am totally surprised these guys still have their hearing and abilities with nearly 20 studio albums and decades of touring. They have not lost their chops one bit!

Coldplay required a lifetime to make their wonderfully assured debut, Parachutes. But it took less than two years for the moody British quartet to deliver a masterful follow-up. As a band, Coldplay have advanced to a stage where they outshine nearly every one of their rivals in terms of imagination and emotional pull. A Rush of Blood to the Head is a soulful, exhilarating journey, moving from the cathartic rock of "Politik" to the hushed tones of "Green Eyes" without once breaking its mesmerizing spell. Singer Chris Martin takes his voice on soaring flights, reaching places only Jeff Buckley previously dared to go. And the music is nearly flawless, a persuasive cross between Pink Floyd and the Verve. Even if they haven't come up with another "Yellow," you would be hard-pressed to care. This is exquisite stuff. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars The genius of Coldplay.......2007-07-12

This review has been long overdue. But with 'Politik' playing in the background now, I have been kind of driven to write this. This album is Coldplay's best work so far and definitely in a different league compared to most other music in the same genre (rock). Even with the kind of following Coldplay has, I think they are quite underrated. For example, this album itself is ranked 473th on Rolling Stone's list of greatest albums. Are you kidding me?! I find that hard to believe. It's true that this music is not for all moods or for everyone. But it's musical creation at its finest with amazing melodies and brilliant lyrics. The songs are beautiful, melancholic, moody, introspective and profound. The beauty of Coldplay is that even the saddest song will end with a ray of hope (this is very unlike Radiohead with whom they are so frequently compared). My favorite tracks from this album are 'Politik', 'A Rush of Blood to the Head', 'The Scientist', 'Clocks', 'Green Eyes' and 'In My Place'. I mentioned about the lyrics earlier. I won't go too much into it (because it's hard to describe such stuff). I will just say that these are some of the most wonderful lyrics I have ever heard.

This is definitely a must-buy album. Twenty years from now, it will be considered as a landmark in the history of music.

5 out of 5 stars A rush of life to the head.......2007-05-04

The Rush of blood to the head is propably one of my favourite albums in my stack of 900+ albums, I have to date.I have been a music lover from the age of 6,I'm now 39 closing in on 40.I have seen Coldplay live in Concert in Auckland,New Zealand back in 2003,they where fantastic. To me ,Warning Sign should have been number 1,maybe it's because of the Lyrics or the mere melody and strings in the backround that are so relavent to our lives I'm not sure, but it's a masterpiece the Commercial world has overlooked.A gem in it's own right, listen to it with open ears and enjoy.

A true appreciation for Chris Martin and his band.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD ever.......2007-04-19

Not only is the music absolutely fabulous, but the lyrics are also amazing. I listen to this CD so much that my five year old daughter is singing along with the lyrics. Coldplay is fantastic, and this is their best CD (I own them all).

3 out of 5 stars Good wallpaper music, but does not hold up to direct listening.......2007-04-05

They've got a great sound and the occasional evocative lyric, but as Coldplay's surface appeal wears off, time seems to be revealing there's not much depth here. The minimalism of their arrangements and, especially, writing can really be a snooze if you listen to Coldplay as anything more than background music.

With Moving Pictures, Rush's complex songwriting and musical virtuosity reached new heights. It's that rarest of creatures, a highly listenable progressive-rock album; even the all-instrumental "YYZ" is of interest to listeners besides musicians. The highlight of the album is "Limelight"; like many progressive-rock bands, Rush writes songs about the experience of being on-stage. The result is impressive, with almost orchestral arrangements that never overwhelm the actual music. "Tom Sawyer," another classic, is on this album, as well as the science-fiction-meets-road-movie "Red Barchetta," the epic "The Camera Eye," the cautionary "Witch Hunt," and "Vital Signs," which takes advantage of the budding digital sound technology available at the time the album was recorded. This is probably Rush's best album; it's definitely their most accessible. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Rush Ever Made!!!!.......2007-06-13

Moving Pictures is both one of my favorite albums of all time and one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Perfect in every aspect. This is Rush unleashed! After the near perfection of previous efforts like Hemispheres and Farewell To Kings and Permanent Waves, Rush came together and created their masterpiece. I could listen to it a million times and still never get tired of the prog-rock trio's best effort.

Tom Sawyer - Hands down one of the coolest songs ever! Here the boys from Toronto show that not only are they excellent musicians, but they can write a song with hooks from hell. Memorable and classic. I love this tune.

Red Barchetta - My Uncle has a country place that no one knows about... Another classic Rush tune. Written in the 1984-esque future-gone-wrong perspective with an idea garnered from a cool sci-fi story. This about a boy and his car and the fact that driving has become illegal. Great stuff.

YYZ - One of the most killer instrumental tunes ever recorded. This song rox! Geddy, Alex & Neil in complete show-off jam mode. Solid.

Limelight - Another of my personal favorites. A song about the other side of fame & fortune. From the opening riff, this song rocks! All the world's indeed a stage and we are merely players! Excellent!

The Camera Eye - If Moving Pictures is said to have a soft spot, Camera Eye would be it, although I happen to love this song. Clocking just over eleven minutes, this is a sprawling, moody tune along the lines of Xanadu or Natural Science. A sleeper, but still strong.

Witch Hunt - I have so many favorites on this album, and Witch Hunt is another. Written about prejudice and mob mentality, Witch Hunt is part three of the 'Fear Trilogy' (The Enemy Within & The Weapon being the other two parts) that they performed live for a long time. Killer tune. Those who know what's best for us should rise and save us from ourselves....

Vital Signs - Great ending song to a magnificent album. Short and sweet and too the point. Neil's lyrics flow on their own. Everybody's got to deviate from the norm.

Overall, Rush went into the studio and came up big with Moving Pictures. This is the culmination of their earlier years solidified into something both powerful and perfect. There will never be another Rush album like Moving Pictures. This is the peak. Great songs will follow but there will never be that cohession that this album brings. Great album to start with if you are just getting acquainted with Rush. An old favorite for those of us who have been following them forever.

Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars rush moving forward.......2007-05-29

While Rush has so many great albums this one is in my top three.
A classic cd from the 80's with such melodic songs as Red Barchetta and
Witch Hunt. Plus the two mega hits we all love. If you are wanting to forget your worries, put this in your cd player and sit back.

5 out of 5 stars Best album ever.......2007-05-11

OK folks, I don't want to sound over the top here but only one album can be the "best ever" and this is it for me. Every track is outstanding.

This came out in my freshman year of HS but since I had no older siblings it generally passed me by until Signals came out. I picked it up, went to the New World Man tour where they played every song from 'Moving Pictures' except for 'Witch Hunt' and hence... I found my favorite band. As soon as I had the money I went to the store and bought up every Rush album including 'Moving Pictures'.

At that time a new technology was being developed -- the Compact Disc. 'Moving Pictures' was one of a handful of albums chosen for this new experimental technology and they could not have chosen a better set of songs for this experiment. If I remember correctly the CD cost about $20 which was about 3 times the cost of vinyl. It was well worth the cost.

Everybody knows about Tom Sawyer and Limelight -- played on classic rock stations to this day. They have played these two songs on every concert as well and after 25 years I have almost had enough. Notice I say 'almost'.

Unfortunately, along with YYZ, side B gets overlooked. I listen to side B more often than side A because they are never played on the radio and the quality is just as good. I remember being completely fascinated at how an 11 minute song (Camera eye) can have such little singing and come out so fantastic. The traveling Lifeson arpeggios are simple yet clever and sound so outstanding with the other instruments as you travel from NY to London in a variety of time signatures that change like a well oiled Mercedes.

Witch hunt makes you feel like you are in a Salem witch trial with the mob stirring in the background. The synth in this song is some of their best use of keyboards ever.

Vital Signs sounds a little different than the rest of the album but it is a perfect ending to a perfect record. "Unstable condition. A symptom of Life." The end of the song is so strong it makes you want to hit the repeat button and start it all over again with Tom Sawyer.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a must own CD.......2007-04-27

I'm going to keep it short. Buy it, curl up with the lyrics and let it drip over your. Amazing album, amazing band.

5 out of 5 stars ON TOP OF THEIR GAME!.......2007-04-25

man, 262 reviews for this CD?!? I don't remember if I reviewed it before but so what. If Rush never recorded another CD after this their place as one of the all time great progressive rock bands is already secure. I have had the absolute pleasure of seeing Rush perform 5 times and they remain one of the best live bands I have ever seen.
The production on this CD superb as is the playing. Neil Peart has influenced countless drummers, including myself, and his playing on this is tight, crisp, and clean. The track TOM SAWYER is a classic and Neil really shines on that track. Sometimes it's hard to believe it's only 3 guys in the band but each one is a superb musician. This is one of Rush's must-have discs. Their RUSH IN RIO dvd is also highly recommended. Add these two babies to your prog rock collection. Ignore at your own risk!

After laboring in Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Neil Young finally hit perfect pitch--if his endearing off-center whine can be called "perfect"--with his third album. He's equally passionate with trippy riddles (has anybody figured out what "We've got mother nature on the run" means in the title track?) and pointed protest (after 30 years of rock-radio overplay, "Southern Man" still rings with truth about redneck racism). His creaky ensemble, including pianist Jack Nitzsche and rotating members of Crazy Horse, transforms ramshackle country and folk songs into soulful hippie hymns. --Steve Knopper

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don't let it bring you down.......2007-07-19

After his first stint in CSN&Y, Neil Young headed right back in the studio with both of his former collaborators, Crazy Horse and Jack Nitzche, as well as a new addition, Nils Lofgren. The album was recorded in a tiny studio where the performers were literally on top of one another. This cramped recording atmosphere translates onto the record, but not in a bad way. It comes across as almost terrifyingly intimate.

The snarl of a guitar, the warm sound of a piano, and the natural haunting beauty of Young's otherworldly-gospel voice has never sounded more pertinent and relevant as on this album.

This album also finds Neil Young at a perfect balance between rock God (Southern Man) and song-spinner (Don't Let It Bring You Down.) This was the beginning and the end of a great era for an artist whose sound and direction changes faster then that of his unique guitar solos. From here he would trudge through commercial success and failure with almost no rhyme or reason, but as he sings, "It's only castles burning. . ."

5 out of 5 stars timeless classic.......2007-07-05

This has remained my favorite Neil Young Album as well as one of my all time favorite rock albums.

5 out of 5 stars After The Goldrush.......2007-04-12

Neil Young-After The Gold Rush *****

Neil Young released his seceond classic solo album in 1970. This time he elected to go it without the help of the grea Crazy Horse. Though he did use every member of the band at one point or another during the recording of After The Goldrush this was largley a solo album. A much softer and lighter album then it's predicesor Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and actually accesable compared to the debut selftitled album. After The Goldrush is a much more personal album with more hearfelt lyrics and a far less dry recording then that of his previous albums.

By this time Neil Young had already made a large name for himself working with the legendary Buffalow Springfield, the success of Everbody Knows This Is Nowhere, and he was beginning to work with Crosby, Stills, and Nash, so it was only logical that this album be a massive success.

Songs like 'Tell Me Why' and the hit 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' and 'I Believe In You' are very personal songs that have to be heard to appreciate and when heard one can since and feel the longing in Youngs voice for love. The cover of the country classic 'Oh, Lonesome Me' really sums up the entire feel of this album and Neil mood at the time, he was in a very low place and was longing for companionship of some kind. While tracks like the short 'Till The Morning Comes' and the equally as short 'Cripple Creek Ferry' seem up beat and peppy they are the shortest moments on the album and by the far the only half way forgetable ones on this classic. 'Southern Man' is a classic and it was destend to become so the moment it was recorded. Establishing Neil Young as a certified first rate guitar slinger, and the Godfather of grunge all at the same time. 'Southern Man' is one of if not the single most contraversial songs Young ever recorded causing a rivalry between him and the southern rock band from Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd. The title track on the album 'After The Gold Rush' is another Young classic and one of his all time best songs. It is a song about the renissance, the 1970's, and the future and how the world is changing and not changing and what we could be doing to fix things but are not doing. It is a calssic song that is for sure. 'When You Dance You Can Really Love' is one song that has always be given a bad rap and for what I do not understand the song is wonderful and one that I personally get lost in everytime I hear it. 'Birds' is without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs Neil Young or anyone has ever written and it is heart wrenching to listen to. You relaly must hear to understand what I mean. 'Dont Let It Bring You Down' is possibly the best song Young ever recorded. The melody line and the vocal layering is wonderful. The lyrics are spectacular, quite simply amazing. Do sit and write in a little review how amazing 'Dont Let It Bring You Down' is, is just frankly impossible. Just listen is all that can be said.

After The Gold Rush has gone down in history and one of the all time greatest rock n' roll albums ever. Many best of, critics, and music fans alike. After The Gold Rush is an album all Neil Young fans and all rock n' roll fans around the world should own. It's an album of songwriting, and much more tendor then most of the other albums in Youngs cannon, Highly recomended.

4 out of 5 stars A solid effort.......2007-04-10

While this is not one of my favorite Neil Young albums, it is a solid effort. It was a top ten hit on the US album charts and produced his first solo top 40 hit "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and the minor follow-up hit "When You Dance You Can Really Love". It includes probably his most overrated song, the cliché ridden "Southern Man", which is really just a remake of his excellent "Cowgirl in the Sand". It was popular primarily because it helped perpetuate anti-southern and anti-Christian stereotypes (the only two groups that it is still politically correct to stereotype). "Tell Me Why" is a very good song as is "After The Gold Rush", though Young's vocal limitations are very apparent on this song as he struggles to hit the notes. "Till The Morning Comes" is good but sounds like a song that he started but could never finish. All-in-all, a good album but not a great one.

5 out of 5 stars If You Could Forget The Politics And Relax For Awhile Listen Up............2007-03-13

The icon Neil Young solidified himself in the early to mid 70's and the funny thing is that he remains true to this album to this day despite all the semi forays into synthesized madness, noise, albums cut with Pearl Jam, and the styles of the day.
The simplicity of this album as well as his prior 2, the few that followed are all 5 stars,it's laid back intimate sparse texture that fuses bittersweet tinged country ruminations with the great garage rock of Crazy horse was his formula and Neil's ongoing trademark of endurance.
Nobody does it better, none of his musical children.
I happily was front row in New York on his "Greendale" tour, saw that great"Rust Never Sleeps" tour, and followed and listen to him from the "Deja Vu" days onward and all you youngsters are best to start with these and should listen to Buffalo Springfield with his old buddy Steve Stills to see the development of this musician and the status he achieved with CSN&Y and beyond.

Only Rush could have pulled this off, and only in the '70s. 2112--the title suite of the band's 1976 breakthrough album--is a comically pretentious, futuristic rock opera written by a nerdy drummer and sung by a whiny-voiced geek. It also happens to be a great piece of rock & roll that lifts the listener through a variety of moods and textures from genteel acoustic ("Oracle") to thrilling metal ("The Temples of Syrinx"). Perhaps realizing that they had taken conceptualism about as far as it could go, even these guys backed off on the epic hero stuff for later releases. 2112 still stands as one of the great signposts of the prog-rock era. --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars The Concept Of Rush.......2007-06-13

After the departure of orginal drummer John Rutsey, Rush took a turn in a different direction with the addition of lyricist and drummer extraordinaire Neil Peart. One can hear the difference right away on Fly By Night and even more so on the comercially-shunned Caress Of Steel. In the interim between the first Rush outing and the recording of 2112, Rush was a band still toying around with their sound, their ideas, their voice. Gone by now were the heavy Zeppelin-esque trappings as they began to find themselves meshing as musicians. No longer were the elder gods of rock needed to influence, because the pro-rock trio were becoming gods themselves. 2112 isn't the final stop for Rush into the whole concept album forray, but it's one of their most complete. Side one, as the licorice pizzas used to spin, is entirely devoted to the Ayn Rand-inspired future-gone-wrong song suite 2112. Elegant and grandiose, this is Rush on full-throttle. Though many would say that the latter Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres suite is vastly superior in musical construction, 2112 set the standard. From the ashes of the pretentious, overtly confusing efforts ending Caress Of Steel (The Necromancer & The Fountain Of Lamneth), rose a coherent, cohessive opus of sci-fi angst.

2112 - From the beginning of Overture on into The Temples Of Syrinx, Rush shows that their chops are clean and the music is fused into a solid, slamming, well-built machine. What 2112's biggest challenge was melding harder rock tunes along with the softer side of prog-rock and making it work as a single entity. I think they did it with 2112. I never grow tired of listening to this.

A Passage To Bangkok - Great song. Straight out rocker. One of my personal favorites. We're on a train to Bangkok, aboard the Thailand Express...

The Twilight Zone - Strange song, but one that I like. Obviously about the television show, the latter part of the song is very eerie. Geddy sings on one channel and whispers the lyrics on the other at the exact same time. Kinda creepy. Still a cool song.

Lessons - This song sounds eerily reminiscent of some of their earlier work (maybe Making Memories off Fly By Night). Staight ahead. Concise. Not a bad song. Not one of their best, however.

Tears - This song drags just enough to make it the soft spot on the album. Light-hearted. Sounds like it should have been a Barry Manilow tune.

Something For Nothing - This sounds like somthing off their first album, only musically superior in structure. Straight-forward rock tune. Catchy, kinda-corny lyrics. Definitely a cool tune. You won't get wise with the sleep still in your eyes...

Overall, Rush had matured in the relatively short time between the failure that was Caress Of Steel and the brilliance that shows on 2112. Geddy Lee's voice is something that takes a little getting used to, but it fits, and it's Rush, for better or worse. Things would only continue to get better from this point in their career until the masterpiece that was Moving Pictures.

Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-05-12

One of the best ever. The 2112 suite covers the entire spectrum of rock music, from driving rhythms to great acoustic guitar, a masterpiece. Twilight Zone has got to be one of the most underrated Rush songs (to me and what I've heard people say) that they have done. Great album from start to finish.

Just sample some of Europe s still working prog bands and artists up to now . Now , onto 2112 . Rush , a band i have not had the time or privilige of reading much on , has been of my liking since my adolescence . Now , about 16 years after changing ' musical ' paths i have come to value this great album again .

When i first heard this it floored me , as it did when I acquired it again not long ago . It has great melodies , and does not bore for one instance . It is amazing that it has that capabilty after ( now ) 31 years .

The prog - or music - world in 76 was going through intriguing stages . Floyd had just delivered WYWH . Genesis had begun working with Bil Brufford , and Gabriel was not singing anymore . Frampton had just released comes alive . It was an intriguing - indeed - time . I was one year old ( in 76 = ) ) Ok ..

So , after letting you know relevant info on that year , in musical history let s just say Peart, Lee and Liefson made a Bona fide record . There are albums that can be heard throughout without the need of skipping songs . But this is one that really leaves the listener content .

On a techincal note , I d love ot know what kind of sound system Rush used in the late 70 s to promote their albums , and please their fans ( live ) . Live rigs are always important . Being an avid Grateful Dead fan , there is a wonderful book called GD gear that tells of all the gear the group used in its 30 year history . If anyone knows any of this ( of Rush ) , feel free to comment on this data .

My other album of this group i recommend is hemispheres . Well done album . Rush s musical catalog for my liking should begin with any of these two albums . Although there are the earlier ones that delight ( Fly by night ) .

The 2112 suite ( especially the overture , discovery and the dream ) and the song Tears , have to be among the best songs made in 20th century music history . Like a good bottle of wine , this album has aged to an intoxicatingly ( good ) level . Enjoy . God bless Liefson , Peart and Lee for this ..

5 out of 5 stars One of the best hard rock albums of all time.......2007-03-26

First of all, Amazon.com should remove or edit the "official" Michael Ruby review above; there is no need to refer to Geddy Lee and Neil Peart in such a manner. Very unprofessional and silly review.

Anyway, "2112" is a classic by any measure. Rush basically INVENTED a new genre of music with this album - Progressive Metal. Even the ridiculously anti-Rush Rock & Roll Hall of Fame puts this on their list of the 200 best rock albums of all time. This album, in my opinion, is one of three albums that Rush has created that really stand the test of time and are true rock classics (the other two being "Moving Pictures" and "Counterparts"). This album sounds fresh and current even today. What other band in 1976 had a sound like this?

The title track crafts an interesting story of a future ruled by an authoritarian group and one man's struggle to re-introduce music to the world after finding an ancient guitar. It's a masterpiece, both musically and lyrically. The other songs on this album are very good as well, especially "Passage to Bangkok" and "Something for Nothing".

After the lackluster "Caress of Steel" album, it's amazing that Rush created a classic like "2112"; this was clearly a turning point for the band, and they really haven't stopped making good music since this album.

5 out of 5 stars Rush reaching their Musical peak.......2007-06-28

Although I am a new fan to RUSH I do believe with this album 'A Farewell to Kings' is where the band started to reach their Musical peak along with their next 'Hemispheres'. Before "A Farewell.." RUSH released '2112' and I don't think it compares to 'A Farewell to Kings' at all. This one has more matured songwriting.
I say that I am a new fan because years ago I never cared for Geddy Lee's voice. I remember turning the Radio off or changing the station when a song like "Tom Sawyer" from 'Moving Pictures' came on.
Over time and with recent purchases I have learned to appreciate Geddy Lee's incredible vocals. No one sings like this guy. I now think he truly does have an amazing voice.
The first two songs on 'A Farewell to Kings' are pure classics and favorites of mine -title track- and the epic "Xanadu" -transporting me into another world (of paradise) filled with immensely superb prog rock scailing the Mountain Tops of sound to enlighten your pleasure dome. A full 11 minutes of monumental scope and sound quality. Apocalyptic intensity!
Next is "Closer to the Heart" and another RUSH song I remember hearing on the Radio years ago. Alex Lifeson does some really good acoustic work on this one. Simple lyrics, but direct and highly felt.
"Cinderella Man" is a pleasant heart felt song including Top-notch bass playing.
"Madrigal" is the shortest track out of the six on 'A Farewell..' at 2:33. It's a song of love lost, my least favorite on this, but it's still better then anything found on '2112' besides the title track.
"Cygnus X-1" is out of this World at over 10 minutes and truly a spacey prog-rock Masterpiece.

~ Glad I finally got into RUSH after all these years after not paying much attention to them. I knew my Music collection was lacking something, so I filled it with two incredible prog-rock bands with YES and now RUSH.
- I highly recommend 'A Farewell to Kings' to anyone who likes progressive Rock or is thinking about buying a RUSH record.

5 out of 5 stars Top 3.......2007-06-25

Farewell is classic Rush. Xanadu is one Rush's best songs of all time. The title track, Farewell to Kings is also outstanding and shows the bands versatility. I would rank this release as a top 5 in the bands long history. My ranking would be Hemispheres and 2112 are 1 and 1A. With Farewell coming in at 3rd or 4th at the worst if youre going to go with Moving Pictures in 3rd. Either way, this is one of Rush's best, and should not be missed by any Rush fan.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Effort By The Boys From Toronto.......2007-06-13

After the initial success of 2112, Rush took another step forward with A Farewell To Kings. Where 2112 was ambitious and sprawling, Kings is more concise and less gradiose, but still better musically than it's predecessor. You can feel Rush getting more mature, more comfortable with themselves, more cofident to honing their sound. The compositions here have reached a point where their song construction is clever, adept, and precise. The classical guitar on Kings, the intro to Xanadu, the acoustic phrasings of Closer To The Heart. You can feel Rush has evolved.

A Farewell To Kings - I quoted this song in my High School yearbook back in the day. Great tune. Very mature. Alex shines.

Xanadu - Epic! The intro is great with the birds and all the different percussion instruments Neil throws in. One of my personal favorites. Excellent. I scaled the frozen mountaintops of Eastern lands unknown....

Closer To The Heart - A Rush classic along the lines of Spirit Of Radio or Tom Sawyer. Short, sweet and to the point. Perfect.

Cinderella Man - An often overlooked song. Geddy wrote the lyrics to this tune and it works well. Solid.

Madrigal - Probably the weakest song on the album. Not bad, just short and very reflective. Moody. Sounds like side two of 2112 Lessons or Tears. Not filler, just not spectacular Rush.

Cygnus X-1 - The ten and a half minute vastly superior bastard son of The Necromancer. In the last few years Rush has started to perform this song live again. It is a killer tune, just throws me off a little bit with the distorted intro voice that makes me flash back to Caress of Steel. Defiinitely jams.

Overall, you can feel that Rush has reached a point in their career where they actually feel in control of themselves and their music. The polished feel of these songs speaks volumes for them as perfectionists and muscians. One of the string of truly great Rush albums that span from 2112 to Moving Pictures on the older side of the Rush catalog.

Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent progressive hard rock/metal.......2007-04-15

I really enjoyed this 1977 album (way back when) and along with the excellent Hemispheres (1978), Farewell to Kings finds the band at a proggy peak. The overall sound of Farewell to Kings borrows heavily from English progressive rock, yet with a healthy dose of hard rock and heavy metal styles. Overall, I find the combination pretty exciting and the album makes for a great listen.

The lineup on Farewell to Kings includes Geddy Lee (lead vocals, Rickenbacker 4001 bass, Taurus bass pedals, mini-moog synthesizer, and 12-string acoustic guitar); Neil Peart (drums and percussion); and Alex Lifeson (6 and 12 string electric and acoustic guitars, classical nylon guitar, and Taurus bass pedals). I think that of all the bands in the progressive hard rock/heavy metal genre (e.g. Kansas, Styx), Rush had the finest musicians. Geddy Lee is a superb bassist and along with incredible drummer Neil Peart made up one of the finest rhythm sections around. I recall listening to Neal's drumming in particular and loving the thunderous fills on his roto toms and the excellent double bass drum attacks here and there. Neal also happened to be a superb lyricist and his lyrics on Farewell to Kings are exceptional.

The six tracks on the album range in length from 2'33" to the lengthy 11'05" Xanadu suite. Musically, this album borrows heavily from English progressive rock and the epic length pieces, odd time signatures, dense ensemble work, virtuoso performances, vaguely experimental sections, and sharp acoustic/electric contrasts are plastered all over the album. Synthesizers are used a lot too, which makes the comparison with the English prog bands unavoidable. There is also a prominent hard rock/heavy metal element present too - Geddy's vocal style really makes this come across, but the heavily distorted electric guitar also contributes. Although I really enjoy all of the tracks, my favorites include Xanadu and the lengthy 10'21" Cygnus X-1 suite (which was continued on Hemispheres). This track, along with Xanadu features some nice spacey, acoustic passages and the muscular riffs that featured prominently in a lot of their compositions. Cygnus X-1 also has it's crazy moments too, particularly on the frenzied closing passage whereby "sound and fury drowns my heart, every nerve is torn apart..." Of course, although I have been obsessing over the prog component of the album, there are some nice "songs" on the album too including Closer to the Heart and the delicate track Madrigal. The title track and Cinderella Man are concise, yet complex prog statements.

This remastered album feature great sound quality and restored cover art.

All in all, this album is highly recommended along with the excellent Hemispheres. Other albums that might prove enjoyable include a few by Kansas including Song for America (1975); Leftoverture (1976); and Point of Know Return (1977).

4 out of 5 stars Excellent album and follow up to the classic "2112".......2007-03-26

With "A Farewell to Kings", Rush achieved a new level of maturity in their songwriting, arrangements, and recording that they lacked on their previous albums. Every song on this album is very good, with "Xanadu" and "Closer to the Heart" being the best of the group. Most bands can't follow up a classic album this well, and Rush deserves a lot of credit for putting out a strong record like "A Farewell to Kings" after "2112". If I had to find one negative about this album, it would be that it doesn't have the same raw intensity of "2112". Every Rush fan will already own this, but still a strong recommendation to non-hardcore fans that want to own a few Rush albums.

Smart rockers Rush were just on the brink of being embraced by the album rock mainstream when they recorded Hemispheres. Already wildly popular with a certain corner of the intellectual crowd, thanks in part to drummer Neil Peart's Ayn Rand obsession, this CD marked a turning point for the Canadian trio. Hemispheres explores the political, social economic, and sci-fi themes prevalent on their early work, continuing the saga of "Cygnus" from A Farewell To Kings. Rush was fond of writing in movements, almost orchestrally, rather than the typical verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure, and Hemispheres has the usual opus-like compositions that perfectly displayed their chops. The CD features time changes that you'd need a calculator to crack, impossible guitar arpeggios from Alex Lifeson, and Geddy Lee's low end bass rumblings and high end vocal shriekings. Rush's lofty lyrics sometimes bordered on the ridiculous and, if for no other reason, Hemispheres deserves props for Lee's ability to sing the line, "There is unrest in the forest..." (from "Trees") while keeping a straight face. --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars Can Rush Keep Getting Better? Oh Yeah!.......2007-06-28

The thing Rush fans had to keep asking themselves from 2112 on into Moving Pictures was: Can Rush keep getting better with each new album release? And the answer was, yes! After breaking away from their Zeppelin influences and creating their own sound, Rush was still building upon their mmusical talents and the strength of they're lyric-writing drummer and after the greatness of A Farewell To Kings, they went into the studio to record their final (so far) epic concept album. Hemispheres is the technically superior bastard son of 2112. Where 2112 laid the groundwork for their sprawling one-sided opus, Hemispheres perfected it. Everything on this album indicates that Rush were hell- bent on being the best musicians they could be, and Neil Peart's lyrics were just getting better. As for the force of their groove, Rush was as cohessive as ever as a single musical unit. Let's hit the song listing:

Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres - Where Cygnus X-1 left off on A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres brings us back. Shrouded in the Mythological realms of Greek Gods, Hemispheres follows the rise of Cygnus as the God of Balance amoung the Immortals on Mt. Olympus. Musically tight and stunning, Hemispheres is well-crafted and precise. Great opening song-suite. This is Rush at the top of their game as far as the whole concept album goes. Excellent.

Circumstances - One of my personal favorites. This is a great song that gets overlooked too often. I felt the gloom of empty rooms on rainy afternoons... Short and sweet and rocking.

The Trees - An all-out Rush classic. This is one of those great Rush songs that must be on every fan's top ten list. Great commentary on social tension through the metaphor of waring trees in a forest. Alex's acoustic work is awesome and Neil's tidy little percussion extravaganza is perfect. Another fine example of how far Rush had evolved at this point in time, not only as musicians but as social commentators. Excellent! ....and the trees are all kept equal by hatchet, ax, and saw.

La Villa Strangiato - This is what The Fountain Of Lamneth would have sounded like if Rush had been able to plot themselves better back in the Caress Of Steel Days. Instead of complete chaos, with ideas roaming wild and colliding into one another, we have a balance that is tight, concise, and free-flowing. Strangiato is seamless. Here the boys get to show off every way that they can. This is a grand, epic, sprawling instrumental that birthed such later classics as YYZ and Leave That Thing Alone. This is Rush on Heavy Groove. After this no one would doubt their skills as musicians ever again. They had become gods themselves.

Overall, Hemispheres only boasts 4 tracks, which may have detracted from people shelling out money to get it at the time. Clocking a little over 36 minutes, it did seem sparse on the time side, but what they did in those 36 minutes was enough. They said what they came to say. No need for filler. Rush will continue to move forward from here, but Hemispheres will remain one of their earlier crowning achievements. A must for every Rush fan, this is a nice look back to see how they used do it. The last big song-suite of the boys from Toronto, now they would be more inclined to say what they had to say in smaller doses. Excellent!

Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2007-05-15

Simply put, this is the best RUSH release, PERIOD.....SO masterfully written and created. From beginning to end, there is not one throw away song. Any RUSH fan that doesnt have Hemispheres is doing an injustice to themselves. Hemispheres is 1. and 2112 is 1a..............

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rush.......2007-04-15

This album is groundbreaking in every way. The lyrics, song structures and of course the masterful musicianship are all top of the class. Rush are one of the best prog-rock bands ever and this is one of their best efforts. It grips you from the beginning to the end with not one wasted note to be found. Hemispheres, 2112 and Moving Pictures are Rush at their finest.

4 out of 5 stars Music: 5 Stars, Lyrics: 1 Star.......2007-03-27

This is a really tough album to review because it has so many contrasts. On one hand, musically, this is one of Rush's best albums of the 70's, but lyrically, it's embarrassingly bad (especially "Hemispheres" and "The Trees"). When I first heard Hemispheres, as a teenager, I thought the lyrics were cool, but now as an adult, I find them just puerile and silly; Neil Peart is a fine lyricist, but this is not the best example of his work.

Musically, it's a different story. This is a good - maybe even great - album, and Rush's last true epic song, Hemispheres, is interesting and complex. The cool fusion of hard rock and jazz elements makes "La Villa Strangiato" one of their best instrumentals. This was one last hurrah in the "progressive rock" genre for Rush, as they took a totally different direction with their next album.

Definitely worth a listen, if you can get beyond the lyrics and just concentrate on the great music.

I don't get some people!I know people who like Korn,Stain,Creed but they don't like Rush.Do you get it?I don't!They don't make albums like this anymore.Peart is such an awesome drummer. He is just as good as some of my favorite Jazz drummers.Great guitar work and bass lines too!If you like classic 70's rock this is an album for you.

I did not know about this band until I was looking on Billboard chart and noticed that they had the #1 song a few months back. I listened to "Undone" on YOutube and I was hooked. This CD does not disappoint. This CD is on constant rotation in my car, especially the songs "Undone", "We all" and my personal favorite "For Those". I look forward to seeing what this band for there d CD. If this CD is representated by their possibilitythey will not be a one hit wonder.

5 out of 5 stars An Exceptional First CD.......2007-07-15

Rush of Fools deserves to be praised for this album, its a very well balanced compilation and for a first album is exceptional by any standard. Vocals are clean, precise, and lofty, but more importantly, they are heartfelt. Instrumentation is equally clean and measured, never overdone or muddy. What's probably most striking about this CD, for me and my family, is how familiar this band sounds, yet it has a freshness and uniqueness of its own. I am a huge fan of Building 429, Anberlin, Relient K and Jeremy Camp and I'd be willing to recommend this band in the same breath with those. Mellower in tone overall compared to most of those, but - as one reveiewer put it - perfect for putting you in a worship state of mind. This band is going to succeed big-time if they remain on this track and continue to pour their hearts into their work as they've done with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Love this album!.......2007-06-27

This is one of my favorite worship albums! There is not a single song that I don't like on this album! "Undo" is one of the best songs that I have heard in a long time!

I also love the fact that every song on here is a brand new worship song! Don't get me wrong, I love, love, love, worship music, but it seems like the same songs get recorded over and over again...not so here...all of these are original and brand new songs!

It is hard to compare these guys among other bands, but if you like the sounds of Jeff Deyo, SonicFlood, Shane & Shane, and Desperation Band, then you will most definitely love these guys! What a blessing!

5 out of 5 stars Great first album.......2007-06-14

I don't even remember how I stumbled onto this band but I'm sure glad I did. After playing through the cd a few times I must say that I am impressed and have been recommending Rush of Fools to friends.

I always hate describing the way bands sound since the only way to do that is to reference other bands - which never seems fair or accurate. I'm not a The Fray fan, but I guess you would have to say the styling is in a similar sort of mold, I guess. Kinda. Not very helpful, I know! Just think of a mix of acoustic and electric rock brushing up on the very edges of hard rock. The lyrics are very well written and the instrumentation is excellent. And, unlike some Christian rock, it actually puts you in a worship state of mind. I look forward to seeing the band live sometime in the near future. Amazon has this cd for $11. Come on, you have eleven bucks. You won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great New Album.......2007-06-02

This is a great new album. Their single "Undo" has already made it to number one on the Christian Music charts. Personally I like "When Our Hearts Sing" the best. The music and lyrics are both so well matched and performed from the heart. It's nice to have lyrics that are not all the same old cliches and shallow repetitiveness so prominent in today's "worship" music. I think these guys are going to do well if they keep producing music like this.

Though not their first-ever career survey, Rush's Spirit of Radio compilation is an ideal point of entry for newbie fans or anyone who consistently likes the Rush songs most often heard on commercial radio. While 1990's Chronicles set was more encompassing--including tracks beyond Spirit of Radio's '87 cut-off point--the Canadian prog-rock trio's benchmark moments are represented among these 16 songs. Hence the appearance of "Closer to the Heart," "Tom Sawyer," "New World Man," "Time Stand Still," "Fly by Night," "Subdivisions," and the title track. --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars The Spirit of Radio, the hits of Rush.......2007-02-02

Well, pretty self-explanatory here, A collection of Rush hits from 1974-1987.
Rush has three decades of music to sift through so with "The Spirit of Radio", it's a nice collection of hits from their earliest studio albums up to the late eighties.

I enjoyed the double CD set "Chronicles" that they released in 1990 which was also a nice hits package, but this is still something to savor. Old classics like "Working Man" are still as energetic a listen as when I first heard them, and the song I myself think of them the most by which is "Fly By Night" is on here as well. Jump to track three and you will experience the eclectic and timeless space overture known as "2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx" Syrinx clocks in at over six minutes long and has a lot of depth in musicianship and instrumental prowess. The ever poetic "Closer to the Heart" is a woeful and powerful single that is another gem on the album. "The Trees" is another classic that is a creative song with a lot of meaning and a killer guitar solo. "The spirit of Radio" is a pick me up and graciously stages Neal Peart's drum expertise at the forefront. "Freewill" is another old friend that is clever in its lyrics and has some dark tones to it amidst a range of great sounds and melodies. The emotional opening of "Limelight" takes you further on the journey of hits and is one of my favorites with Geddy Lee forging ahead with vocals that evoke various themes and thoughts.

Track nine is "Tom Sawyer", perhaps the most popular FM Radio hit the band had from the album "Moving Pictures". Along for the ride (no pun intended) from that album is also the Futuristic sci-fi theme of "Red Barchetta" which is about a boy in a strict government dominating future that has "car laws" and as you listen you experience the day he takes his uncles hidden car for a ride. The powerful anthem of "New World Man" glides in at track eleven and is one of the more ambient songs from the bands later material. "Subdivisions" is as dire as ever and has an intro that one cannot miss. The pop synergy of "Distant Early Warning" is on here as well, followed by another FM staple in the catchy track known as "The Big Money".

The album rounds out with the epic track "Force Ten" that is fast and fun, and although I was never a big fan of the song, still has enough staying power to definitely be included on here. The sonic "Time Stand Still" comes in as track sixteen and has some amazing changeups in tone. Heartfelt in the chorus, Time Stand Still is the perfect song to end this masterpiece collection with.

If you even "like" Rush, you should look into getting this album. Thirteen years of various songs that make for a sound and complete hits package for perhaps what could be called the "First Half" of the bands tenure. I wasn't sure at first about getting a CD like this of the bands material since I already had several studio albums from over the years, but I got this delivered today and definitely don't regret it now. They are one of the most innovative and artistic rock bands of the past thirty years, so how could you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive compilation.......2007-01-14

It has all the songs I was looking for. If you are a fan of Rush, this is actually a no brainer.

4 out of 5 stars "Catch the spirit" of Rush! Good for beginners. .......2006-10-29

This is a fair representation of their work from 1974-87. Some fans may argue that there are some tracks not on here that should be. Never mind them. If your serious about buying some of their music this is as good a place to start as any.

What are you waiting for?! Pick it up, put it in and let it spin!!

please tell me that fed up guy is a joke. did he seriously give an nsync album 5 stars?!? that can't be real. no one actually LIKES nsync. anyway i don't think it needs further explanation. if u are into nsync then this album is probably not for you, if you on the other hand like authentic classic rock and perhaps one of the greatest things to ever come out of canada then this album is for you!

Amazon.com essential recording

One of Rush's finest moments, second only to Moving Pictures. This album includes two classic songs, "The Spirit of Radio" (which has one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in all of rock) and "Freewill." There's also the epic-feeling "Jacob's Ladder," as well as "Entre Nous," a sort of intellectual love song (if such a thing can be said to exist). The introspective "Different Strings" and the anthemic "Natural Science" (which clocks in at over nine minutes) close the album. Though there are only six songs on Permanent Waves, it's enough; the material is rich enough that more of it would be like overdosing on chocolate. -- Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Rush backs off from the epics while still maintaining a very high technical standard .......2007-07-22

By 1980, Rush had left the large scale compositions behind them and had started to shorten the format. Interestingly, the band did not sacrifice any of the technical excellence that characterized their music even as they started to inch into the musical mainstream. In fact, I do remember hearing Spirit of the Radio and Freewill played a lot on the radio and thinking that they were just fantastic tunes. As I recall, it was the sophistication with which the songs were played that really grabbed me.

The lineup on Permanent Waves included bassist extraordinaire Geddy Lee (lead vocals Rickenbacker bass; Oberheim polyphonic synthesizer; OB-1; mini-moog synthesizer; and Taurus bass pedals); Neil Peart (drum kit; and lots of percussion including: tympani; timbales; orchestra bells; tubular bells; wind chimes; bell tree; triangle; and crotales); and Alex Lifeson (6 and 12 string electric and acoustic guitars; Taurus bass pedals). This group of only three individuals managed to churn out a wall of sound that sounded as if had been made by an ensemble twice that size. Their technical ability was astounding too: these guys could rock out in 7/8 just as easily as they could in common time (4/4). I do recall seeing Rush in concert as a teenaged prog rock fan back in 1981 (Moving Pictures tour) and just being wowed by the performances - Neil Peart still amazes me, both with his approach to the drums and his lyric writing ability. As I recall, his drum kit was at an absolute peak of "massiveness" in 1980 - 1981.

The six tunes on Permanent Waves range in length from 3'48" to 9'17" with most in the 3-6 minute range (this album is a bit short overall). There is a broad spectrum of music on the album that includes the densely arranged, yet shorter pieces that (somehow) managed to get radio play, to the more prog rock pieces that got me into the band in the first place including Jacob's Ladder and the incredible, riff-heavy progger Natural Science. The two tracks that I always enjoyed listening to and that somehow seem to fall through the cracks include Entre Nous and Different Strings - both are somewhat quieter and a bit more reflective, yet do not lose the distinctive stamp of Rush's unique brand of progressive hard rock/heavy metal. Geddy's use of synthesizers is very tasteful and he generates some fairly atmospheric moments in-between the more powerhouse sections of wall shaking, "thinking man's" progressive metal that made the band famous.

This remastered version of the album is about as close as it will get for those folks that never owned the vinyl (the original photos and lyrics to each piece have been included). As somebody who did buy this on vinyl when it came out, the CD will never hold the same magic, but it did (admittedly) bring back some fond memories. The sound quality is superb and the production by Terry Brown is excellent.

All in all, this is a fantastic example of progressive hard rock/heavy metal and is very highly recommended along with A Farewell to Kings (1977); my personal favorite (Hemispheres, 1978), and Moving Pictures (1981). For those folks that like this particular brand of progressive rock, a few albums by Kansas are highly recommended including Leftoverture (1976) and Point of Know Return (1977).

5 out of 5 stars The Awesome Prelude To Moving Pictures.......2007-07-08

Apparently we die-hard Rush fans have a little war going on amongst ourselves as to which album is the best Rush album of all time. Some say Moving Pictures is the pinnacle (myself included) and some say Permanent Waves is clearly the better of the two. All I have to say about that is 1. Permanent Waves is a great album, hands down and 2. The production of Moving Pictures make it a superior album to Permanent Waves. Sorry, but it's true. Now that we have that out of the way, let's move forward to the review of Permanent Waves, one of Rush's greatest albums. After the excellence of A Farewell To Kings, Rush continued to hone their craft into a more FM radio-friendly sound and Neil Peart continued to create great lyrics along the way. Short and sweet and to the point, Permanent Waves finds Rush at the peak of their prowess as far as song construction goes. Let's take a look at the song listing.

The Spirit Of Radio - One of the all-time great Rush tunes along with Closer To The Heart and Tom Sawyer and so many more. This is awesome. A nod to the greatness of radio as a whole and the freedom of musical expression. The clever homage to Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound Of Silence" is great and most people don't notice it. S&G: "...the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls...tenement halls!" Rush: "For the words of the prophets were written on the studio wall....concert hall!" Both great songs. One of Rush's best.

Freewill - Another killer tune. Freewill was a live stape for years and years. A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance. Neil's lyrics shine here. Perfect.

Jacob's Ladder - A brooding, moody epic tune. Again, Neil's lyrics are inventive and clever. Alex wails here. An often-overlooked song.

Entre Nous - Middle of the road Rush. If Permanent Waves has a weak link, this would be it along with the next tune. This song isn't terrible in any way, it just doesn't have the punch of the earlier tunes.

Different Strings - Much like Cinderella Man from their previous album, Geddy wrote the lyrics here. This song starts out slow and light and pretty much stays there. Geddy isn't a bad lyricist, he's just not Neil Peart. The diet coke of Rush, just one calorie, not Rush enough.

Natural Science - I was delighted when they started to do this song live a some of years back. It's always been one of my favorites. In the same vein as Cygnus X-1 and the latter The Camera Eye, Natural Science is one of the multi-part mini-concept songs that Rush was so good at creating. Computerized clinic, for superior cynics, who dance to a synthetic band... Awesome!

All in all, Permanent Waves is a great album. Entre Nous and Different Strings and its production keep it from being as truly great as Moving Pictures, but it is very close. Always one of my favorites, you wouldn't go wrong starting out here if you were new to Rush. If you are an old fan like me, it's clearly one of their best efforts!

Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars One of a number of personal favorites........2007-06-18

Enough has been said about this album already by others that anything I add would simply be superfluous, except to suggest that, aside from Geddy's different vocal approach (probably brought about by age as much as anything else) this would be the last album where Alex would be the star attraction. Whether that was a conscious decision on his part, a collective decision made by the group as a whole, or just a genetic mutation is a subject perhaps Neil should write a song about! Suffice to say that, as a guitar player for 30 years, the solo in 'Freewill' is still, today, up there with the best that May, Gilbert, Satriani, et al can put forward.

5 out of 5 stars signals.......2007-06-10

wonderful C.D from Rush, they are the best musician in the world.

Do not miss the concert June 15, 2007 at the sound advice amphitheater in West Palm Beach .

5 out of 5 stars A classic album (4.5 stars).......2007-04-06

Consider this a 4.5 star review.

Permanent Waves is one of Rush's best albums. This is a total 180 degree change in direction from the prior album, Hemispheres; the songs on this album are much more accessible and radio friendly. Geddy Lee's singing also started to be singing, rather than screaming, starting with this one. Even though this is a 27 year old album, it still sounds fresh and current. Every single song on this album is a winner (my personal favorites are "Freewill" and "Jacob's Ladder"). I think the only negative about Permanent Waves is that you can start to feel the limits of Terry Brown's production abilities starting on this album (which is why Rush dropped him two albums later). Anyway, this is a classic album and highly recommended for any fan of good rock music.
