Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to the faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s. But beyond being a mere trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find critics who'll argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), it's also a Cliff's Notes take on a remarkable seven-year run of musical evolution, one that stretches from the neo-skiffle of "Love Me Do" through a remarkable synthesis of R&B, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley, gospel, country, and classical that still defies efforts to effectively deconstruct it. This is the pop monument equivalent of the '27 Yankees and '90s Bulls; it's every bit as obvious and dominating--and just as essential. --Jerry McCulley --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars All the # 1 hits of the Beatles........2007-07-18

This record has all the number one hits in the history of the Beatles, what you can add to that.

5 out of 5 stars As good as you think it is.......2007-07-08

John, Paul, George, and Ringo. If this phrase does not move you then you should go back to your George Michael videos and prey he'll become heterosexual! This is everything that you remember from the Beatles.

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-07-06

Beatles 1 is a good collection of the Beatles #1 hit singles. Perfect for the casual Beatles fan or for someone just being introduced to the Beatles music for the first time. If you are interested in hearing more Beatles music, collect their albums. Depending on your taste, you can get their early 60s stuff or their late 60s stuff or both time periods. Personally, I enjoy their early 60s stuff more than their late 60s stuff and have a collection of their early 60s albums.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of past music.......2007-06-27

I guess this is a CD of their best songs and is well worth buying. Now I have a tape and CD of their music and could not be happier.

5 out of 5 stars I'm in love with the Beatles, and I feel fine.......2007-06-18

"Beatles 1" is a great album. I could leave it at that, but I think I would just be stating the obvious, so I will give you a more in depth look.

You are probably aware, but just in case you don't know by now, "Beatles 1' is chronologically organized using songs that reached number one in the United States and/or the United Kingdom. Even though that means that some of your favorite songs won't be on here, and even some number ones will not make it (Strawberry Fields Forever, Please Please Me), it is still an exceptional collection of music that very few bands in history could ever dream of putting together. From "Love Me Do" to "The Long And Winding Road," this album is fantastic. While "Beatles 1" does have some weak spots, even those songs are far above the best of most other bands.

All in all, I have to say that If you are new to The Beatles, then you should get this album in a heartbeat. However, if you own a lot of Beatles music, then you probably shouldn't buy this album, unless you really want to here the digitally Remastered quality, because you probably will already know most of the songs.

Although they were probably the band that most transformed rock from a singles medium to an album-oriented form, the Beatles also released many singles and EP tracks that never made it onto albums. In the U.S., Capitol turned the group's early LPs, through Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, into compilations, more or less, throwing the hit singles onto the vinyl to augment the album tracks. When the label later released the U.K. albums on CD, it posed a problem: What to do with the non-LP singles? Past Masters, Volume 1 compiles 18 of those singles, including some of their best-known tracks, running from "Love Me Do," "She Love You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "This Boy" to "I Feel Fine" and Paul's homage to Little Richard, "I'm Down." Essential stuff. --Bill Holdship

Some of the Beatles' best cuts were regulated to non-LP b-sides (or at least are now ever since the US albums were dropped from the market in favor of the UK ones), and the best of those (other than Rain and Revolution, found on Volume 2) can be found here: This Boy is a superb, R&B-laced original; She's a Woman, a brilliant rockabilly/Elvis throwback (later covered quite nicely by Jeff Beck); I'm Down is relentless rock 'n' roll. You also get a straight reissue of the Long Tall Sally EP: Long Tall Sally itself and I Call Your Name are two bare essentials, both charged-up, three-chord rock with Lennon's powerful vocals. The other two tracks from that EP (Slow Down, with an interesting guitar solo; Matchbox) are nothing special but coulda been worse. Then there are the classic #1's from the early days that didn't make it onto an LP: From Me to You; She Loves You; I Want to Hold Your Hand and I Feel Fine are presented in their original versions here, while Love Me Do is an alternate version with Ringo (rather than a session drummer) drumming, though it isn't much different than the original, that's no real reason to complain. Bad Boy is an awesome rocker (from the US-only Beatles VI, which doesn't exist on CD unless you shell out $60 for The Capitol Albums, Volume 2) that didn't deserve to disappear. The German-language versions of She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand may seem like padding, but they're fun and interesting, though certainly not perfect or the originals: the only song that doesn't do the job for me is Yes It Is, one of their weakest.
The only way to get several of these tracks other than buying this is through The Capitol Albums boxed sets. So if you don't feel like spending $60 or more, go here for some great rare Beatles!
Why don't the Rolling Stones or the Who have collections like these? Both bands recorded some quality single-only material that is now fairly hard to find, except through greatest-hits albums.

5 out of 5 stars Fills in the void created when these singles were omitted from the original LPs.......2007-01-21

It's well-known that The Beatles ruled the charts for the majority of the 60s and the record company knew the value of their prizes when they released songs as singles (never putting them on LPs), split albums into EPs and releasing different versions of the same album (as was the case with "Revolver," and the beginning of the song "Help!" among many examples).

The two "Past Masters" CDs, to me, fill the void one might feel was created by the omission of the singles from the LPs. The fact that singles such as "Love Me Do," "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," and "She Loves You" were omitted from LPs in the first place seems a bit weird to me - someone born after The Beatles long split up (at least on paper, anyway).

But just thinking about John and Paul cranking out more timeless and poignant songs (separately and together) as opposed to insisting the singles be put on the albums attests to the fact that they are the greatest songwriters of the modern era of music.

Both "Past Masters" are essentials to a Beatles collection. - Donna Di Giacomo

4 out of 5 stars There are better and more interesting samplings.......2006-12-09

These tracks appear to be the A and B sides of 45 rpm and some 33 1/3 rpm LP records that I have tucked away in my closet. Volume One is a very good cross section of The Beatles hits early in their career, along with songs that are (were) rarely heard on the radio, particularly Matchbox (sung by Ringo) which was originally recorded by Carl Perkins, a country rock-a-billy or country rock artist. Yes It Is, is a soulful love song sung (and probably written) by John Lennon. Unique to The Beatles are their early appearances in a night club in Hamburg, Germany thus the two tracks sung in German. What you hear and hopefully enjoy while listening to this CD, is the energy, warmth, passion and diversity that John, George, Paul and Ringo put into each song. There are better, less well known, cuts that show a greater diversity of the Fab Four. But Volume One is a good place to start for a neophyte "The Beatles" fan.

This is the first release in a three-part series that essentially amounted to the three surviving Beatles officially sanctioning the release of tracks that had been bootlegged for years. Thus, you get some of their earliest recordings as teens; the tracks they cut in Hamburg, Germany; their Decca audition tapes (which were rejected); and, finally, alternate takes and works in progress of songs that are now part of the world's consciousness. Oh, yeah, you also get "Free As a Bird," the John Lennon track the other Beatles "finished" in 1995; it's out of context in the company of some of the group's early classics. Beatlemaniacs, of course, love exploring this stuff, but the three Anthologies are hardly a place for beginners to start their explorations. --Bill Holdship

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is previously unreleased material, not masters... 5 star for historic value alone.......2007-06-14

First off, this CD gets 5 stars for historic value alone. No, John, Paul, George and Ringo weren't at the height of their abilities then (Ringo wasn't even involved through much of this.) However, these are fairly good, very interesting recordings. I'm not a music theory expert, or anything but I don't see- or hear- what's so out of tune, tempo, and harmony, according to one of the negative reviews. Nothing seems off key, and to a Beatles fan, this stuff is fun, and some of their great wit is present here. No, there earliest, previously unreleased originals are not lyrically or musically great, but not terrible (and 'Youl'll be Mine' is a hoot if you can make out the words.) The recording qaulity is very poor on some of the VERY earliest recordings but, but there old, and the musicanship (is that a word?) still seems pretty good. In fact 'Cry for a Shadow', an early instrumental, is great material. As for the Decca tapes, they're not great, although that could be because of Brian Epstein's selections, of which we hear five here. Still, 'Three Cool Cats' is great fun (with George's lead vocal),as is Searchin', and one would have though Paul's 'Like Dreamers Do' would have sold Decca the group, at least as songwriters. 'Hello Little Girl' and Sheak of Araby' were okay, too. We hear some of Stuart Sutcliff's bass (in very poor qaulity), and some of Pete Best's drums (Ringo was clearly WAY better.) The early sessions with George Martin are interestig, not bad ( the false starts section for 'One of 909' is really fun(ny).) The live cuts (I saw Her Standing There, Roll Over Beethoven, etc.) that end disc one are of course great. I listen to dsic 2 less but great material (an early cut of 'Can't buy Me Love', 'And I Love Her, Eight Days a Week, Hard Day's Night, et al.) abound. Watch also for the Ed Sullivan Show performance of 'All my Loving'. There is also material from the Royal Command performance- priceless.

Of course 'Free as a Bird' is here, and if you love the Beatles, you'll want to own it, although 'Real Love' (on Anthology 2), is a better song. The audio snippets help narrate you through, and are generally interesting and enlightening (same for the liner notes in the booklet), although most of them are of medicore audio qaulity. They don't annoy me, and although absent on later 'Anthologies', create a smooth guide from track to track here (with the notes of course.)

Finally, to the one star reviewer I refered to earlier: I looked up all the people you list as "great guitarists... great drummers"- they are all jazz musicians. Now, I have nothing against jazz, in fact it's a side interest of mine, but comparing the Beatles to jazz is apples to oranges, to use the cliched analogy, for lack of a better one. You can't compare jazz to pop/rock (especially early 60s pop/rock), and in fact, I can't imagine how someone with your tastes, wondered into/got interested in the Beatles, to begin with. In short, the styles, practiced skills, theories, and criteria for good musicians/songs are simply different in these two, very different genres. Sorry you don't like this stuff. I like this and jazz. Make peace with the fact that its apples and oranges, and its the Beatles and your tastes.

(SIDE NOTE: Don't even get me started on the reviewer who prefers the Stones; I'll address that in another review.)

So, sorry for all the ranting. Overall I give Anthology one, 5 stars for historic value alone (the music isn't bad either.) But don't buy if you're not a 'diehard fan' or are just starting a collection!

5 out of 5 stars PRESENT AT THE CREATION.......2007-04-14

THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGIES ARE A RECORD OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LEGENDARY BAND. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW IT WAS DONE HAVE A LISTEN HERE. NOW IF WE COULD ONLY GET SOME EARLY MOZART...

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Beatles Collectors.......2006-12-05

Of the three Beatles Anthology volumes, this first one is easily the most exciting for Beatles fans and collectors. The idea here is to give a new spin to the old classics, and present alternate takes, working versions, live renditions, all of which are being released here for the first time.

This volume takes fans back to the very beginning, to 1958's "That'll Be The Day." What a thrill. Then we hear home demos that were recorded in Paul's garage. This is followed by the material recorded in Hamburg with Tony Sheridan. We are treated to five selections from the Beatles' Decca Audition. Even if it wasn't the greatest tape the Beatles could've made, I'm sure Decca is stil kicking themselves now for not signing the Beatles!

It gets better and better as time goes by. The Beatles sang "I'll Get You" at the London Palladium in 1963, and "All My Loving" on Ed Sullivan in 1964. Both of those recordings are presented here. Other highlights include:

*One After 909 - I actually prefer this version to the one that got released in 1970.
*Eight Days a Week - the tight harmony at the beginning works well. Also the false starts were interesting.
*How Do You Do It - the unreleased single.
*Free As A Bird - a new Beatles masterpiece.

Die-hard Beatles fans will not be disappointed with this set!

5 out of 5 stars Listen to Shout! w/ earphones.......2006-10-01

The whole Anthology is spectacular!! I bought them when they came out 10 years ago. I'm sure this has been mentioned, but if you listen to Shout! from Disc 2; which was prerecorded for a TV special; towards the end, you hear John say "Everybody f@@in' shout now" 4 or 5 times. It went on the air that way and I don't think no one caught it. Pretty wild when you think about it. Incidently, that TV special was released on VHS back in the late 80s. If you can find it, it's pretty awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Not a Traditional Greatest Hits Collection , but a Historical Retrospective.......2006-05-12

The Beatles need no introduction when it comes to the elite of Rock/Pop music. When trying to "rank" the greatest artists of the Rock/Pop era, there is no doubt that the quartet from England ranks number one on just about every list. Going even further, the Beatles might be the top act in the history of modern music - among any genre. Some quarter-century after their breakup, the Beatles began to consider their place in history. This impetus played a key role in the release of the three volume, "Beatles Anthology" CD set and corresponding television documentary. One of the main attractions of this project was that it would bring the three surviving Beatles together for the first time since the famous breakup. Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr would collaborate together on two unfinished John Lennon songs: "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" - creating a "virtual" reunion among the four band members. This three volume set would not be an ordinary greatest hits collection - it would provide a historical retrospective to the band through rare and unreleased material. It is the first volume, "Beatles Anthology 1" that covers the early days of the Beatles from their days as the Quarrymen through their material in late 1964 found on their fourth album, "Beatles For Sale".

As mentioned, this CD serves as a historical retrospective to the band. The material is arranged in chronological order. Some of the material is prefaced with spoken words by Lennon, McCartney, and Brian Epstein. The spoken words help set the stage for the material that is to follow. Included with the collection is a 46 page booklet that describes each of the tracks. As for the tracks themselves, these consist of demo cuts, alternative cuts, live cuts, and bootlegs. One thing that helps is to follow the material in the booklet with the music - using the booklet and music hand-in-hand helps complete the historical experience that this collection provides. This should not be confused with a traditional "Greatest Hits Collection". This is no greatest hits collection: Some of the material consisted of covers and songs that were never heard before. At the same time, the "name" songs are all different versions from what is heard in the mainstream. As a result, this helps enhance the listening experience.

Here are 10 things to look for - in no particular order:

1) "Free as a Bird" is a good song - it isn't a great one. There probably wasn't much to choose from to sustain a "virtual" reunion between the four members of the Beatles. The engineering of the song isn't bad. The song will grow on you as you hear it. It would have been nice if Ringo Starr had gotten a vocal since the other three Beatles got vocals. It is also worth noting that Harrison's "Wilbury" partner Jeff Lynne produced the song. I didn't think this song belonged as the first song, but given the fact that this doesn't fit in with the early material - I'm not sure where this should have been put.

2) George Martin does a masterful job at providing continuity and fusion to the collection. While he didn't actually produce "Free as a Bird", he produced the Anthology series as a whole.

3) The "Pre-Beatles" material is very interesting. This isn't going to have the best recording quality. In fact the 1958 Quarrymen cuts from the Phillips studio are going to have some pretty bad quality. Yet, this is going to add to the whole "historical" listening experience that this collection provides.

4) The Quarrymen and early Beatles material consist of a large number of covers. Some of the more common covers include "That'll Be the Day" (Buddy Holly), "Aint She Sweet" (Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps), and "Shout" (Isley Brothers). But perhaps the best one is the Beatles cover of the song made famous by the Coasters - "Besame Mucho". This cover stands out and shows a Latin side to the band that was rarely seen.

5) I was also surprised about the instrumental pieces that were included. "Cayenne" and "Cry For a Shadow" are two instrumentals that are included on this collection. Both instrumentals stand out.

6) The Tony Sheridan song, "My Bonnie" is included as well. It is on this version that features Sheridan on lead vocals and the Beatles supporting him as his band. Only some shouts by McCartney can be heard on background vocals.

7) There is a very funny comedy skit featuring the Beatles on the British comedy show, "The Morecambe and Wise" show. I can't get enough of when Ringo is referred to as "Bongo". This skit has a segue into a very funny version of "Moonlight Bay". This shows a lighter side of the band.

8) I would have liked to have seen more of the Ed Sullivan material included on this CD collection. I'm disappointed there isn't Ed himself providing the introduction It would have made the historical perspective "complete". The only "Sullivan" song included is "All My Loving".

9) As for the spoken words, I actually would have preferred if more spoken words were included. The spoken parts that are included serve as a great lead-in - but there are parts that don't have the spoken word add-in.

10) I love some of the unfinished demo cuts. I heard a disc-jockey in "New York" so impressed with this collection as he said "...and this is the junk!" It's amazing how stuff that didn't make it through editing could sound so good, but in this case it works.

Overall, this is one terrific collection. I've heard that this collection is not geared toward the novice fan, but I think anyone with an interest in modern music history will appreciate this collection. This collection is best listened to when you listen to it from start to finish. I wish more groups would follow this formula for producing retrospectives. This collection is highly recommended.

When the Beatles catalog was first issued on CD in the '80s, an attempt was made to standardize the releases (which often varied wildly in content internationally) by using their original British format. But this confounded many Fabs fans in the U.S. who now found CDs with track listings that often differed dramatically from their original American LPs. More maddening, the initial four releases were only available in not-so-glorious mono mixes. This four-CD collection of the band's 1964 American album releases finally addresses those concerns, and then some. Meet the Beatles, The Beatles Second Album, Something New, and Beatles '65 have been digitally prepared from Capitol's vintage album masters and presented in both the original stereo and mono mixes released back in '64. This set gives younger fans a chance to finally hear the band's epochal early music in stereo--and should please an older generation by returning massive hit singles like "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," "She's a Woman," and "I Feel Fine" to their original American album contexts. The booklet contains a wealth of rare photos and concise notes by noted Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great........2007-07-22

This set is ok if you don't have the CDs of the earlier British Beatles albums. If you do have them, this isn't really worth it. The sound quality is very good, though.

5 out of 5 stars Dance to exhaustion.......2007-07-18

This music is bright and happy and a lot of fun. It cheers me up and I dance till exhaustion. Now I know where all the sixties music went.

5 out of 5 stars Beatles - Capital Years Vol 1-.......2007-05-31

I bought Vol 1 and 2 to replace my record collection. I was not disappointed. The sound quality is great and the mini albums are exact replicas of the originals.

5 out of 5 stars About damn time!.......2007-03-14

Even though I have all the 1987 CD's,I still bought this set. And I couldn't be happier! The set sounds great,Duophonic,Real Stereo or Mono. The packaging is stellar, each CD in the set in a reproduction of the original US album sleeve, with the CD label reproduction of the vinyl label (for the most part-the Capitol logo should've been at the top of the label...but so what). The booklet, however, could've been longer...but that's my opinon. Buy this set,as well as Volume 2. You will not be disappointed! (Here's hoping Capitol does a Volume 3!)

5 out of 5 stars America! Bring on the reverb!.......2007-03-04

Debate all you want the merits of the British versions versus the American versions, but the first time I heard "I Feel Fine" (on my big sister's original Capitol 45) it was bathed in echo and reverb. So was the flip "I Feel Fine." And didn't these versions sound great coming over the tinny transistor radio? You bet your Beatle Boots they did!

Years later when the CDs came out we were "treated" to the British versions (as the Beatles intended), we got to hear those two songs (on Past Masters Vol. 1) dry and stripped of the echo and reverb. I was stunned. So that's how they were supposed to sound, eh? I felt betrayed by the evil Capitol engineers.

Now it's a million years later and Capitol has the AUDACITY to release their original mixes. And you know what? Lay that reverb on me, baby. Douse me in echo! I'm a freakin' stupid clueless eight year old again!

What I didn't know didn't hurt me!

Sid (Matthew Sweet, after his character's name in the Austin Powers band Ming Tea) and Susie (Susanna Hoffs, who joined him and Mike Myers in belting out "BBC" on the soundtrack) are in as fine voice as ever on Under the Covers, Vol. 1, a 15-song collection of tunes first made famous by the likes of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Mamas and the Papas, and the Who. And man, were they born to sing this stuff. Both the Bangles and Sweet discographies are derivative--in the best possible sense--of late-'60s pop-rock, and who didn't love the Merry-Go-Round, Grass Roots, Simon & Garfunkel, and Big Star covers Hoffs and company scattered among their originals? Recorded at Sweet's home studio in the Hollywood Hills, the album opens strong with "I See the Rain," a Marmalade song from 1967 that Jimi Hendrix called the year's best British single but was a hit only in the Netherlands. Maybe Sweet's stinging, ringing fretwork (he plays most of the non-percussion instruments on this disc) and Hoffs's throwback vocals will rectify that, nearly 40 years later. The two proceed to nail the Beatles' "And Your Bird Can Sing," one of the high points on Revolver, and score similarly with Fairport Convention's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" (Hoffs in full ballad mode), the Stone Poneys' "Different Drum," the Who's "The Kids Are Alright," Love's "Alone Again Or," and a pair of Neil Young numbers, "Cinnamon Girl" and "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere." Some of the selections do miss the mark--Hoffs's smoky-sweet backing vocals seem a little misplaced on Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," and "The Warmth of the Sun" was probably the wrong Beach Boys track for Sweet to attempt (Brian Wilson himself strains at those high notes nowadays). But by and large this is a delightful power-pop excursion. Van Dyke Parks's liner notes, keyboards, and string arrangements make it that much better, as do Sweet collaborator Ric Menck's drums, Ed Fotheringham's illustrations, and Henry Diltz's photographs (Hoffs looks as stunning today as she did when laying down All Over the Place). --Benjamin Lukoff

Album Description

What do alt-rock/power pop heroes like Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) and Matthew Sweet do on their time off? They get together in Matthew's comfy home studio and record a stunning album of their favorite '60s pop hits and rarities, of course!

The two first worked together in conjunction with Mike Myers as members of the band Ming Tea, appearing in all three Austin Powers movies and soundtracks. Now they've struck out on their own with Under The Covers Vol. 1, a tribute to their favorite '60s acts, including The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young,The Who, and cult favorites like The Velvet Underground,The Zombies,The Left Banke, and Love. Leaving the songwriting to others lets Matthew and Susanna focus on singing, and the results are breathtaking. For extra authenticity, they even asked Van Dyke Parks (most famous for his work with the Beach Boys)to play keyboards and write string arrangements. It all adds up to a rock fan's dream come true.

4 out of 5 stars A breeze from the past........2007-06-23

No, not a blast, just a refreshing breeze. Was any new ground in pop music broken here? Nope. But it's fun and well done all the way through, and some of the great classics of the '60 get tweaked a bit, with great reverence, so that they are both old and new at the same time.

My one criticism is based on my purpose for buying it. I am in desperate need of music that my two young boys can enjoy and that won't drive me stark raving mad with boredom. I was hoping this would fit the bill, but the psychodelic first track "I See The Rain" is about the least accessible of the entire recording and my kids immediately decided they didn't like this CD.

Of course, I can always try again with the CD player on random play mode, but it got me thinking that with a little tweakage here and there this could have been a real breakthrough into the child's music market, since it seems to be a trend to record covers of classics and market them to kids.

Be that as it may, Susanna Hoff's voice is as distinctive as it was in the heyday of the Bangles, and since this CD says "Vol 1" on it I can only hope that there will be additional volumes to follow. I get it, even if my kids don't.

5 out of 5 stars A Boast for the Bygone.......2007-03-18

Apparently, Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs were going to bill themselves as "Sid & Susie." Glad the Shout label has their names on the release, because it made me look twice & eventually get this disc. There really aren't weak tracks on this CD. Cover versions can add to an original or well-known track, simply be a carbon copy or sometimes make you want to go back to the original disc. Two of these tracks have spent a great deal of time in my personal top ten rotation. I think my very favorite, which is a favorite because I kept playing it off the Left Banke record repeatedly back in its day and haven't heard it elsewhere, is "She May Call You Up Tonight." Ian Matthews did record a version of it, but the Left Banke's baroque pop was a unique sound. Sid & Susie give it a hard edge complete with soaring harmonies and jangling guitars, "I've been telling lines I never knew, all to keep that girl away from you." It's a luscious cover, not an obvious choice. Also a wonderful cover is "And Your Bird Can Sing" that pumps energy into what was a minor recording for the Beatles, but gleams with Sweet & Hoffs, "When your prize possessions start to wear you down, look in my direction, I'll be round." "Monday Monday" which will be one of the more familiar tracks is also given an excellent rendition with Hoffs proudly singing the "ba-da, ba-da's" like a boast for the bygone. The track has a stunning energy and is pure delight. I particularly like how the reverb flows into the break before the final chorus resumes. Fairport Convention & Judy Collins are closely identified with the Sandy Denny classic "Who Knows Where the Time Goes." Susan Cowsill recorded a cover of it on her recent "Just Believe It" set that went to the top of my favorite tracks of the year, as did the entire CD. Sid & Susie do a great version here, although I still go back to Collins' crystal Colorado voice and Susan's wonderful reading. I also enjoy their version of the Bee Gees' "Run to Me." The Bee Gees are kind of like the musical equivalent of Woody Allen -- it's hard not to sound like them, much as its hard for other actors not to sound like Woody Allen when doing his dialogue. Their rhythms and sound are so distinctive. This track is a contemplative gem that closes the disc. There are no weak tracks on this set, which makes me hope that a volume two does arrive! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful melodies and uplifting lyrics.......2007-02-15

The Good
A catchy guitar hook and a blending of Hoffs and Sweet's vocals command "I See the Rain" (The Marmalade). On "And Your Bird Can Sing" (The Beatles), Sweet and Hoffs trade harmonic melodies back and forth. Matthew also lays down a great surf-rock guitar solo. The duo expresses their rocking side on Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl." The tempo is slightly faster than the original, but it still has all of the edgy guitar fuzz. With just one note you will instantly recognize the mark of Brian Wilson on "The Warmth of the Sun" (The Beach Boys). This down-tempo number is lead mostly by Matthew's high-pitched vocals. Susana backs him up on the choruses.

Hoffs has such a sweet voice on The Stone Poneys classic "Different Drum." This is definitely one of the songs I think of when I think of that decade. I had no idea it was written by Mike Nesmith (Monkees). Sweet and Hoffs unleash their rocking side again on "The Kids are Alright" (The Who) and "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" (Neil Young & Crazy Horse). As the duo states in their liner notes, Who doesn't like The Mammas and the Papas? Songs like Monday, Monday were the epitome of the music scene in the sixties.

The Bad
Nothing notable

The Verdict
Not that I lived it, but what I've gathered in my lifetime; this album recreates the sounds of the sixties with beautiful melodies and uplifting lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Not a lot of new cd's worth buying these days. This one is!!!.......2007-01-29

And all covers- who would have thought? I had long forgotten about the Austin Powers connection but I had to listen to this after a highly critical/skeptical musician friend of mine told me how good it was. Then I met Susanna Hoffs at a Bangles show and was reminded how GREAT her voice is and how HOT she looks- she is like 47 and could put most 21 year old women to shame. Anyway I had better stop talking about that or that will be the whole review. Highlites? Your Bird Can Sing- man Susanna makes this her own- I would say it is the best Beatle cover EVER. Warmth of the Sun- I worship Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys and they did a great job with this one too. Cinnamon Girl- Incredible. The Kids Are Alright- again phenominal. The only one I could have lived without was "Different Drum". I don't buy the hype about Michael Nesmith being a musical genius. I think Hoffs sounds much better than Linda Rondstat but I found it impossible to forget Linda's whining while listening to it. One of the nice things about the album is that it is full of Susanna Hoffs. No jealous bandmates hogging the mic. And Matthew Sweet really compliments her. I have a lot more respect for the guy after hearing his voice and guitar work here.

4 out of 5 stars Great Taste, No Revelations.......2006-11-10

"Under the Covers" is a solid album covering '60s and '70s pop tunes. Sweet and Hoffs have the talent and production chops to put together convincing remakes of some well known songsand some exciting obscurities. Mostly it works well, although Sweet should never again attempt early-period Beach Boys (he just can't sing up there effectively). The album is more a celebration of Sweet and Hoff's great taste (and Sweet's guitar prowess) than an album with anything urgent or fresh to say. It's a pleasant listen and a good way of getting lots of great tunes in one place. But it doesn't really do anything all that innovative or moving.

2 out of 5 stars Beatles meet Baroque - but the best of both is lost in the process.......2007-01-07

I'm a great fan of transcriptions of old warhorses - new wine in old bottles, or a new seasoning for an old dish eaten to satiation. Besides the inevitable synthesizer reworkings of Wendy Carlos and Don Dorsey, I have wonderful recordings of Vivaldi's Four Seasons for brass ensemble, recorder quartet and as improbable as Japanese traditional harp (koto) ensemble, as well as of Bach's Goldbergs for synthesizer, accordion, organ, guitar(s), brass ensemble, string trio, string orchestra, saxophone quartet, to which you might add Jacque Loussier's and John Lewis' respective jazz versions, and Robin Holloway's recomposition for two pianos - I'm still missing the one for two cymbalums and the one for handbells, but just wait.

And, as everybody else, I am fond of the Beatles. They knew how to write a good tune.

So I was a natural candidate for this "Beatles Go Baroque", which I snatched upon in first publication, back in the mid 90s. I find it disappointing, though. What you get is neither the best of baroque nor the best of the Beatles. The baroque you get is reminiscent of how it was played in the 60s and early 70s by ensembles such as the Jean-François Paillard Orchestra or the Stuttgart Chamber Ensemble led by Karl Ristenpart, rather than of Hogwood's Academy of Ancient Music, Pinnock's English Concert, let alone Il Giardino Armonico or Fabio Biondi's Europa Galante: square, a bit straitlaced, not very lively and dynamic. And some of the arrangements by Peter Breiner sound not so much baroque as like the easy-listening, slightly lachrymose lounge jazz that might go with the singing of Frank Sinatra (try track 13). Breiner is at his best when he composes fugues, like the one on Honey Pie (Track 4) or Michelle (Track 18), but overall I don't think he lives up very well to the challenge of how would have Handel, Bach and Vivaldi composed it, had they been given a tune by the Beatles. And his orchestration limited to strings, harpsichord and flute (in Bach, no doubt in imitation of the second orchestral suite/overture) doesn't help bring much color, either.

And as for the Beatles, many of the most famous standards are missing, and you get too much obscure and (to my ears) undistinguished stuff from the early years. Actually I find myself very much in agreement with the precise and thorough analysis of Neat-o - but for those very same reasons I rate it only two-stars. Ultimately, I'm afraid this release is unlikely to appeal either to amateurs of baroque music or to fans of the Beatles. Those looking for agreeable, undemanding easy-listening with vague Baroque and Beatles reminiscences might enjoy it. But for good Beatles transcriptions, I'd recommend instead the Canadian Brass (a disc called "All You Need Is Love" on Bmg/Rca) and the King's Singers Beatles' collection (EMI). They are just transcriptions of the Beatles' songs, they don't make any pretence at mixing two musical universes that are hardly compatible - and so much for the better.

5 out of 5 stars A WELL ESTABLISHED TRADITION.......2004-04-30

The Beatles had hardly been going for 5 minutes before the Liverpool chamber group led by Fritz Speigl decided to put out a Baroque piece called "Eine Kleine Beatlesmusik" plus another called "The Beatlecracker Suite" and this was before the Americans had a go via Joshua Rifkins's "Baroque Beatles Book" on the Nonesuch label (which included the "Last Night I said..." Canata.
Fact is if you plough through the Goldberg Variations of Bach you will discover one that plays the first 6 notes of "She loves you" in exactly the same rhythm!!!

3 out of 5 stars Meh.......2003-02-01

I listened to the samples online and it sounded intriguing. But the actual album is kind of bland. It has none of the pop of the Beatles themselves. Good generic classical music, though.

5 out of 5 stars Neat-o.......2002-11-11

*Beatles Go Baroque* is a playful CD, in the same category as the *Christmas Goes Baroque* series produced by the same people. Although the music on this disc is more than mere orchestral arrangements of Beatles tunes, it's not in any way a serious study of baroque style. It is much more a play with polyphonic texture. The forms are not strict--no strict fugues, canons, ritornelli, etc. In other words, this disc is not a cerebral "Let's see how Bach would have handled 'Michelle' as a three-part canon with a free bass" type of study--it is, after all, categorized as "Light Classics." It would be quite a feat, however, to spin some of these songs into full-scale concerti grossi, for the Beatles tunes do not seem to lend themselves very well to baroque treatments. If you were to play this disc to someone who's never heard of the Beatles but who knows classical music (not sure where to find someone like that), he would not mistaken these works for true baroque compositions. While Peter Breiner has made some ingenius amalgamations (for instance, you think you're about to hear the Bourrée from Bach's second Overture, and suddenly "We can Work It Out" turns up), he's also made quite a few stylistic compromises in his transformation of the Beatles songs. The play on Handel and Vivaldi do not work quite so well. The always recognizable Vivaldi harmonic and virtuosic flair seems to have been lost for the most part, with the exception of a vague resemblance of the "Spring" concerto for three of its movements, most recognizably the middle movement for "And I Love Her." The style of Handel seems to be playing off of parts of "Alexander's Feast" concerto, but not very strongly. Breiner seems to be most comfortable when writing without a particular composer's style in mind, such as with the fourth concerto grosso (although the notes mention it could be interpreted as Corelli's). The Bachian concerto, however, is recognizably Bach because it is almost a movement-by-movement translation of not a concerto but Bach's Overture no. 2. "She's Leaving Home," done in the style of a sarabande as one of the movements, is a beautiful, poignant work by itself. In fact, many of these pieces could by themselves be musically elegant and charming without the gimmick of Beatles tunes done in eighteenth century fashion. But while the four so-called concerti grossi here are a curious listen for both Beatles fans and baroque music fans alike, with the baroque style watered down, Beatles fans will probably get more out of hearing Beatles tunes put through the contrapuntal exercise. Serious baroque fans will just have to make do with light fun.

5 out of 5 stars A unique Beatles interpretation.......2001-02-28

This is the CD for serious listeners of classical music AND serious listeners of the Beatles. Where pops orchestras have failed, Peter Breiner succeeds. His arrangements of Beatles songs, rather than being simply rock band transcriptions for orchestra, are more like unique compositions based on Beatles themes.

Don't let the "looseness" of these arrangements scare you off, however. They are a good exercise for the ear -- can YOU pick out the melody among the busy melodic textures that are integral to Baroque music? With some pieces it's easier than others. The CD kicks off with an jaunty rendition of "She Loves You" that defies all other interpretations of it, orchestral or otherwise. From this point on you know you're in for a very different sort of Beatles trip.

The songs are wisely divided between fast and slow movements -- all of them being a treat for the ear. Among the best fast movements are robust renditions of "Help," "Lady Madonna," and a witty "Yellow Submarine." On the slow end of the spectrum, "And I Love Her" is supremely beautiful on violin, and "The Long and Winding Road" comes out so elegantly that it puts the original version of the song to shame. However, the cleverest track on the album has to be "Michelle." Taking the main theme of the song, Peter Breiner's orchestra creates a perfect FOUR-PART COUNTERPOINT! Of course, this technical term means little to most listeners, but it basically means that you have to hear "Michelle" to believe it.

The grouping of the songs into "Concerto Grosso" format is a clever touch, allowing listeners to see how the Beatles' music might have fit into a Baroque framework. Some might call it pretentious, but I call it good marketing. For serious fans of classical music, it shows that the arranger really knows what he's doing. The "styles" aren't exactly anything special; the Vivaldi one IS written as a violin concerto but there isn't much else to differentiate the various Concertos. Then again, does it really matter? This isn't about the great Baroque composers -- it's about the Beatles!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic holiday music.......2006-12-25

Someone is a genius to come up with this idea. And it is done perfectly. Music is dead on recreation of the Beatles sound. You'd swear it was Paul and John singing. Perfect for your musician friends. = )

5 out of 5 stars The Fab Four should earn a Fab award!!!!.......2005-02-22

I give the Fab Four a 5 star rating because it is a cd that you can listen to after Christmas!!! Great twist on the Christmas classics and a great twist on the Beatles classics!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beatles Songs with a Christmas Twist!.......2003-02-22

You hear the intro - it's "I Saw Her Standing There" - but wait - it leads into "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer"! Or is that "Eight Days a Week"? No it's not, it's "Let It Snow"! This concept has the potential for cheesiness, but instead it achieves its goal of "How would traditional Christmas songs sound if the Beatles got their hands on them?" with amazing talent and accuracy. You'll find yourself listening to this album in January, February, March . . . you won't be able to hear Christmas songs quite the same way again! Each song is re-created in Beatles style by The Fab Four, one of the premiere Beatles tribute bands in the U.S. But you'll swear it's John Lennon singing "Away In A Manger" or George Harrison singing "What Child Is This?" Extremely clever and extremely well done.
