"Little Saint Nick," the Beach Boys' 1963 classic, is undoubtedly one of pop music's coolest original Christmas songs. Hanson rocked it more recently, and decades later the original still sounds as hot as the California sun on this special combination of previously released and unvaulted alternate takes and never-released material, including a distinctly different arrangement of "Nick" and a fun, loopy ditty called "Santa's Got an Airplane." While many of the songs here are fodder for completists--and will sound uneven to others--it's hard to resist a record that features real rarities and Christmas material from 1964. Dig master Brian Wilson singing solo on "Blue Christmas" from the '64 Christmas Album and his keenly orchestrated "Winter Symphony" (for a 1977 Christmas disc that was never released, much of which is highlighted throughout this CD) with the warm, brassy instrumental bridge, plus a couple of fun public-service announcements and a Christmas-themed interview with the group's eccentric genius. --Martin Keller --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Great songs on this CD with a lot of different artists..........2007-02-11

This CD is growing on me by the minute! The classic voices of Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby are not to be missed. Mix that with the fun tunes from the movie "White Christmas" and the wonderful voices of Danny Kaye, Peggy Lee, the Mellowmen, and others... and you've got a treasure.

Warning: This is NOT the original movie soundtrack. I don't really think the origninal movie sountrack exists because I have searched pretty extensively. However, all the songs that were in the movie are included (some twice by two different artists, e.g. "Sisters"), most are just not the MOVIE VERSION of the song. Also, there are songs included that are not even in the movie (e.g. "Susie Snowflake", "Winter Wonderland.") All in all this is an excellent CD and well worth the price for the 22 songs.

Ultimate White Christmas??.......2007-01-11

Well I was a bit disappointed with this CD, it does not have many of the original recordings from the movie and the recordings that they do have sometimes lacks one of the artists that sang it originally, for example Rosemary Clooney is absent from the "Snow" number, which I found disappointing. Despite this if you like White Christmas the movie this is still a must have, just don't expect it to meet all your expectations.

Searched Over 20 Years For This!.......2007-01-10

I have searched over 20 years for the orginial soundtrack to White Christmas. While this is not exact to the movie, it is close enough for me, and brings so many happy memories of my mom, who passed away one Christmas when I was young. All I need to stir a warm thought is Bing's "Count Your Blessings". It is the last song my mom sang the night before she died and I just get the chills. ANY fan of this movie, this soundtrack is a MUST for you! Highly recommended!

Finally - A White Christmas Soundtrack.......2007-01-10

This was a difficult disc to find at local stores. Lovely soundtrack - just like the movie. Amazon did the job.

This Recording Is All we Have sadly.......2007-01-08

Each december 1st I wish and hope and pray that the original 1954 soundtrack to this holiday classic would make it's cd debut, but it never does dammit!. I bought this cd and have to say that it's very good, and is the nearest thing we have to a movie soundtrack of this Irving Berlin jewel. I love this cd and have played it many times, even after the holidays are over. We can only hope that a ligit recording comes out someday, but untill then, this is a fun disc. Mike

Rennaissance music at it's finest!.......2007-06-29

This was my first Renaissance music album and the broad styles of several composers were very well represented, especially Michael Pretorius, probably the most well-known composer of his time. The tonal quality sparkles and the latin language comes alive (along with English translation in the included booklet); be prepared for an aural "feast" of some of the more eclectic music from the Renaissance period!

To quote from the accompanying booklet seems to be in order to start this review: "This collection attempts to wipe the dust from some old ideas and restore music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance to its roots deep in the human soul.........What you're listening to on this disc is not the domain of museums, but the music of the people,born of faith and the love of song and dance".
This is a varied group of works, some dances, some strictly instrumental and some accompanied vocal.
The role of dancing, as you might suspect, was enormously important in this era. 'Le Bouree' showcases the dance music of the composer Michael Praetorius. The 'Bransles de Villages' is of French origin and features 2 violins, 2 violas, a cello, a great bass viol, hurdy-gurdy and 2 lutes. 'La scesa de Pastori dal Monte' is an Italian dance by Andrea Ansalone. Another dance written by Michael Praetorious was the 'Volte' which actually involved 4 short dances. It was considered not respectable because of the close contact between the dancers.
The strictly instrumental songs are : 'Dum pater familias' is called a pilgrim song, and it was religious in nature. And, of course, all the dance songs are instrumental.
The vocally oriented songs are: 'Quen a Virgin ben servira' is a song taken from a collection of songs about the miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary.-Three of the songs are from the famous 'Carmina Burana' manuscript.- 'Orientis partibus' is from the 'Feast of fools'which was a feast held by the church itself in which the status of the church herarchy was reversed as inferior clergy assumed the role of their superiors.-'Stella Splendours' is another pilgrim song; this song was sung by pilgrims who went to worship as the Shrine of the Virgin at Montserrat.

I always trust the quality of a CD when Philip Pickett and the New London Consort are involved. This album is very interesting, but I would hope that this would be classified as the more "pop" type music of the period. Also, I don't think that I personally would call it early music, as is indicated in the accompanying booklet. Today that term brings to mind Monteverdi, Cavalli, Palestrina, the Scarlatti's, up to and including Handel and Bach etc.. Just a personal reaction on my part. This is a very well put together disc.

A good sampler of New London Consort's work.......2006-12-20

Although there's nothing special about this disc as a compilation, it does provide a value-priced sampling of 17 tracks from the New London Consort's excellent recorded work. Given that so many of their recordings are difficult to find on CD at a reasonable price, and that one of my personal favorites ("Bache bene venies", from their masterful 4-CD recording of the Carmina Burana) is included here, I'd recommend this CD as a great place to start while you search for the original releases.

Excellent renditions of lively 'old music'........2005-11-23

'Sinners & Saints' by Philip Pickett and the New London Consort is just a bit too ambitious with their subtitle, 'The Ultimate Medieval and Renaissance Music Collection' as I find it hard to believe that 70 minutes can be the ultimate anything on 500 years of history. This is especially true since they seem to focus a lot more on the sinners than the saints, as there is virtually no liturgical music here. But, since there are so many good recordings of medieval liturgies, we aren't missing much.

This is really the sort of thing you would expect to hear from a travelling troupe of minstrals, but not from a solo artist, as practically every performance involves several instruments and voices.

Some tracks will sound especially familiar, as they are very similar to Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana', inspired by medieval texts.

Compared to many recordings of music from Shakespeare's time, this collection is superior and well worth the investment.

A Treasure of the Time Period.......2005-08-11

I bought this CD with a children's history class in mind. We are studying the Dark Ages to the Rennaisance. I was delighted to hear the variety of selections which span the spectrum of genres during this period of history. My children and I have been listening to it in the car as well as at home for the simple enjoyment of the music. It will be exciting to present these pieces to my class as I feel it is a very accurate display of the cultures, instrumentation, languages, and styles of the Middle Ages. I am a proffesional musician and thoroughly enjoy most types of music so it wasn't hard to get me interested but I was surprised to hear my eight-year-old and five-year-old sons asking to hear this CD. The former child said it made him feel "important" to listen!!

Best Christmas CD Ever.......2003-12-05

I purchased this CD when it first came out in 1998. I was so exicted to see that it was still available in 2003. I have worn mine out. This is absolutely the best Christmas CD around. The songs range from classics to church hymns. No one can sing Santa Baby like Eartha Kitt. It's the best rendition of Frosty the Snowman I ever heard. I suggest you buy two in case yours gets scratched up like mine.

A Christmas CD to keep.......2002-12-27

If you are only going to buy one Christmas music CD, this is the one to have. It has a great mix of both religious and popular songs, from O Holy Night to Frosty the Snowman. There is also a wide range of artists, from Bing Crosby and Elvis Presley to Whitney Houston and Luther Vandross. Some song renditions are the traditional versions you've heard all your life, such as the Bing Crosby White Christmas. Others, such as the Whitney Houston version of Joy to the World, are fresh and original. The Sarah McLachlan rendition of Song For a Winter's Night is heartbreakingly beautiful. I've bought other Christmas CDs in the past that were limited in scope and I no longer own them. Ultimate Christmas is a keeper.

Christmas with the Fab Four: Ultimate Tribute.......2007-01-26

Being a lifelong Beatles fan and an amature musician myself, I thought I had seen and heard it all, especially since I had seen this very band play live on three occasions. The recordings on this 2 CD set only serve to further showcase the true talent of these four brilliant musicians. Not only do they sound note for note perfect playing original Beatles tunes, but here, they take a recognizable Beatles song and mix it with a popular Christmas song, making for a clever Beatlesque version of the latter. I have given several of these sets as gifts, each time to the total amazement of the recipient. One thing I can guarantee... Christmas music or not, you'll want to play these all year long. If you like the Beatles, you'll love the Fab Four!

More than the sum of the parts........2001-02-04

I bought this as wallpaper music - and got a very pleasant surprise!

Several of the pieces stopped me in my tracks, made me sit down and forced me to listen.

Michala Petri demonstrates a masterly control of her instrument and a high level of musicianship in a wide ranging selection of material - from reconstituted Bach to specially composed 20th Century pieces.

Outstanding for me was the Sammartini Concerto: Ms Petri shows a lightness of touch combined with serious enthusiasm and an obvious delight that literally stopped me from working and made me listen. The support given by the Moscow Virtuosi also deserves mention.

Koppel's pieces are fun, as are the arrangements from Grieg and Satie.

Overall, although this could be taken as a glorified sampler... it is much more - there are complete works played intelligently and lighter, throw away pieces you'll want to chase after and listen to again.

A Great First CD.......2000-06-22

After falling in love with the recorder, I started searching for CDs and this was the first I bought. It quickly became a favorite CD. I like the fact that it ranges over a wide period--Baroque to Modern, and showcases the instrument in different settings. The liner notes are quite comprehensive as well. In a word--enchanting.

The sublime collection.......2000-06-18

I must confess up front to being a Michala Petri fanatic. I also play the recorder, although after listening to this album, I feel like throwing my instruments into the nearest dumpster.

Michala Petri is a national hero in Denmark, and a recognized name among classical music fans in Europe, Asia, and Canada. If you listen to this album, you will ask yourself how the music business in the USA can frantically promote "The Three Tenors" while mostly ignoring the genius of this amazing young woman.

This is not your kid's recorder. Ms Petri's complete technical and musical mastery of her instrument transforms the recorder into the equal of other familiar solo instruments, but with its own peculiar sound, penetrating but sweet, that sets it apart.

This album is made up mostly of tracks from her many earlier recordings. Some are transcriptions of well-loved piano miniatures (the Grieg numbers are perhaps more charming here than on the piano, if that is possible); of baroque works for flute, recorder, or strings; of modern recorder music written for Ms Petri by contemporary masters. Some are accompanied by small orchestra and others by Ms Petri's husband, the excellent guitarist and lutist Lars Hannibal. The combination of recorder and guitar is an intimate match made in heaven, and I recommend also this duo's complete album, 'Air'.

Ultimate Collection is Gross Understatement.......2000-03-28

This is by far the best "sampler" I have ever heard. The playing is so superb and the recorder so perfect a vehicle that I found myself listing to too often played pieces like Satie's Gymopedie No.1 as if for the first time. Same for the Grieg. It is very hard to believe these renderings aren't the original intention of the composers. This is a guaranteed winner.

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

"Little Saint Nick," the Beach Boys' 1963 classic, is undoubtedly one of pop music's coolest original Christmas songs. Hanson rocked it more recently, and decades later the original still sounds as hot as the California sun on this special combination of previously released and unvaulted alternate takes and never-released material, including a distinctly different arrangement of "Nick" and a fun, loopy ditty called "Santa's Got an Airplane." While many of the songs here are fodder for completists--and will sound uneven to others--it's hard to resist a record that features real rarities and Christmas material from 1964. This is indeed the "Ultimate" Beach Boys Christmas CD. The first 12 tracks are the entire original Beach Boys Christmas Album. I'm sure most of you are already familiar with this classic album, so I don't need to discuss it in detail. Next we have the awesome single version of "Little Saint Nick". Then there is an alternate mix of "Auld Lang Syne" without Denny's voiceover, which really shows off the boys beautiful a capella singing. Then there's the oddball version of "Little Saint Nick" sung to the backing track of "Drive-In". Next we get the great but rare 1974 single "Child of Winter". In 1977, the Beach Boys recorded a second Christmas album, intending it to be their last album for Warner/Reprise. But Warner rejected the album, and it was never released. Seven of the songs from that album appear here for the first time. They are actually pretty good, for the most part. Interestingly, most of the songs are rewritten versions of songs that they had already started working on, with lyrics rewritten to be about Christmas. The CD closes with two Toys For Tots public service announcements, and a promotional interview that Brian did for the original Christmas album. This is the only Beach Boys Christmas CD you'll ever need.

Just a great album Christmas album, period........2004-11-29

The Beach Boys are one of the all time greats in American rock music. Not only could they jam, but they could sing! In this album, you get a taste of their awesome vocals. These guys could harmonize for a rock band. Check out track #12 and #14, which are a capella, to confirm what I have written. Even people who are not fans of the Beach Boys can enjoy this sweet album with all its catchy Christmas tunes. Happy Holiday's!!

It would be hard to argue that Ultimate Soul Christmas isn't truly the wham-bam collection of soul, R&B, jazz, gospel, blues, and pop it claims to be. Believe it, because its 30 tracks are practically a retrospective of the United States' bedrock African American musical genres framed in a Christmas wreath. While there's lots of old-school crooning from the likes of Luther Vandross, Nancy Wilson, Alexander O'Neal, and others, plus a smattering of Motown and boy bands like Boyz II Men (ironically sounding the most dated), the vocal performances on many tracks are timeless keepers. Among them are Otis Redding's "White Christmas," Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)," Lou Rawls's swingin' and ever-so-delightful "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?", Fats Domino's "Please Come Home for Christmas," and Bebe & CeCe Winans's "Silver Bells." Of special note are Bill Withers's heartfelt and instructive "The Gift of Giving," Candi Staton's scorching "Christmas in My Heart," and Gladys Knight & The Pips' "Do You Hear What I Hear." --Martin Keller

Disappointing.......2004-12-04

I bought Ultimate Soul intending to escape from the blandness of radio holiday music by the likes of Celine Dion, etc. Sadly, this set does not deliver. With a few exceptions most of it sounds like unemotional pop. If you want to hear the ultimate in soul at Christmastime, buy "Soul Christmas". That collection will move you, in every sense of the word. If you're looking for background music that won't distract from your Christmas party then Ultimate Soul Christmas might be a good choice. If you're looking for pure listening pleasure, keep looking.

this is truly what the title says: the ultimate soul christmas collection. all of our holiday favorites are here. nat cole's "the christmas song," donny hathaway's "this christmas" and the temptation's "silent night" are all front and center. there are also goodies by Lena, Ella, Smokey and Otis. An extra bonus is the warm and smokey Candi Staton track "Christmas in My Heart" and the Tri-City Singers' "Carol of the Bells." This is a must-have a great price!!!!!

It's Christmas...It's Ultralounge!.......2006-12-17

I have always had a love/hate relationship with the Ultralounge series. What I have always loved about the entire series is that amidst the numerous tracks of 50's-60's lounge, oddities and rarities packed onto a cd, you will always find some great standards along with some hidden gems. The Ultralounge series are also visually stunning, full of kitchy, campy vintage commercial art, drink recipes and well scribed liner notes about all the music included. On the other hand, you will also get a handful of absurdities that may make you wonder why anyone actually recorded them and, better yet, who actually listened to them? (Did 50's lounge lizards actually buy and listen to an entire album of whistling?) The Ultimate Christmas Cocktails Box is no exception. Since I'm a sucker for re-packaged box sets, and since I didn't own the first two volumes, Ultimate Christmas Cocktails was a good find. Captital Records probably had the lion's share of that era's top vocalists and many are represented here doing their Christmas swing thing. If you enjoy vintage 50's-60's kitch and camp, you will enjoy the other tracks as well. There is a notable difference between the first two volumes of Christmas Cocktails and the third volume. Volumes 1 & 2, from the original series, have full booklets and each cd contains over 20 tracks each. Volume 3, was obviously not created by the original Ultralounge Marketing Team. It contains far fewer tracks, no booklet, and subsequently, is far less "visually entertaining". (That team has moved on to produce the "Wonderland" series) Ironically, though, it is the best out of the three discs as far as conistant song/artist selection and listenability. No need skip over the odd ducks. It is notable too, in that it contains a previously unreleased treasure...Julie London's version of "'I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm". I am a big London fan and have been playing this one on repeat since the first time I heard it. Wow. Talk about turning a song around 180 degrees! Compared to Dean Martin's "snuggle at the ski lodge" version, Julie has a fireplace in her bedroom and it's burning! All in all, this box set is a fun addition to a holiday collection...if you like music from the Golden Age of Christmas Albums...top vocalists of the era, singing their 2-3 minute musical Christmas Cards, with some high camp thrown in for retro yuletide cheer.

That's Not TRUE - DISC 3 IS AVAILABLE SEPARATELY.......2006-10-16

If you check on the Amazon website, all three discs are available separately under the name "Ultra-Lounge Christmas Cocktails, Pt. 1, Pt. 2, Pt. 3" and at this writing (10/16/06) all three discs are for sale at $7.99 each or the box set (Ultimate Christmas Cocktails) for $20.99. Either way, it's a fantastic bargain for such an eclectic mix of 50s and 60s Christmas music staples.

Don't downgrade your review of this Box set based on erroneous information.

Disc 3 only available here? How disappointing?.......2005-02-07

As an owner of disc one and two purchased from Amazon, I was really disappointed to find, as others have, that disc three is only available in this set. Is this a joke? We all need to write to Capital Records and complain. Why would part one and two be available and not part three? Maybe Amazon should allow those of us who bought parts 1 and 2 from them to exchange them for the 3 disc set. It would be good business practice IMHO. Hopefully Capital will hear our plea and offer disc 3 on its own.

Coming back to this review in 2006, one year after I wrote the 1st part of this review, Disc 3 is now available on its own, so I will now say that this set deserves 4 stars.

A Gold Star for Great Music, A Lump of Coal for Packaging.......2004-12-25

Yes, I'm on board with the rest of the reviewers on this. As a proud owner of Volumes 1 & 2 for several years I can't believe Capitol is punishing me and others by offering Volume 3 only in the boxed set. If you do not own these and are a fan of 1950's and 1960's tinsel time music that is different (and better) than the ordinary, you will love this material...BUY A SET TODAY ! unless your afraid they'll come out with Vol 4 only available in a box set next year. Come on Capitol, cut your loyal customers and fans a break and release Volume 3 as a single CD.

Capitol Offense/Great Holiday Music.......2004-12-13

Yes, I agree with the other reviewers wholeheartedly that this is a major marketing blunder by Capitol Records, so a big "bah humbug" to the Scrooges at Capitol who decided to release Volume Three as part of this set only.

With that having been said, we're really reviewing the music and artists represented here and they're all great. These are fun and festive recordings with a bit of swing and swagger that will enliven your holiday cocktail parties, dinners, whatever. Whenever we play them one of our guests inevitably asks what we are playing. Cuts by June Christy, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Les Brown, Nancy Wilson, Billy May, Julie London and many more are included here and all are performing at the peak of their talent.

If you're a fan of great music and some of the best artists of the '50's and '60's or of all time you will love this collection. I highly recommend it. When will Capitol get around to releasing June Christy's This Time of Year on CD? A second cut from this album is included on Volume Three.

this was a very nice cd for quiet listening, but it did not inspire any emotional feelings.

This music could be played at any Dentist or Doctor's office just to take the edge off. It's not a masterpiece, but it is relaxing.

Decca has come out with the "Ultimate" Series of albums, ranging from Opera Divas to Tango, from Patriotic to Relaxing Classical. I ordered this album last fall from a high school student in my neighborhood going door to door raising funds for her hockey team. I had no idea what the Christmas music was, I just wanted something relaxing. When it arrived in the mail I was delighted to hear favorites from my youth - Annunzio P. Mantovani, Frank Chacksfield (remember him?), and Ronnie Aldrich - all remastered in terrific sound! The liner notes are fun to read, providing a story for each carol and song. This generous album of 22 tracks runs a total time of 63:25, providing holiday ambience from Thanksgiving through New Years Day.
