On their first studio album of the millennium, the horn rock progenitors continue to mine the pop ballad vein that's been their stock in trade since the '70s. XXX revisited.......2007-07-15

REVIEW NOTE: 3 1/2 stars (I rounded up)

I have been a fan of Chicago since I was 3 years old. I remember getting pretty excited hearing "Saturday in the Park" and "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?". Chicago in it's history has had many very catchy pop radio hits like these songs and many others that I have enjoyed.

I had too high expectations for this album. I would read reviews and hear rumors that Chicago was going to break the forumla used on many 80s tracks. I liked Chicago's 80s music but it was time to hear what Chicago could come up with in 2006. In 1993 Chicago recorded an "unreleased" album called Stone of Sysiphus. Many of the songs on that album contained very personal lyrics for the band. Some dealing with the presures of the music industry trying to get them to play a certain sound, a song about Jason Scheff's father, Robert Lamm looking back, etc etc etc. What I was expecting with XXX was something like that... something very personal. What I got was some sappy love songs and a song where they play the rhyme game called "Caroline". I was very disapointed and it didn't help much when I would read reviews of other people just as upset as me. I was trying to make myself like this album and sadly enough it was stressing me out. So what I did was stored it in the closet for several months.

Now that this album has been out for over a year I decided to pull it back out to get a fresh perspective. Now that I have gotten over what the album isn't I enjoy it so much more for what it is... a good pop album. As many had pointed out this is like two albums... a side A and side B. Side A is more ballad heavy and Side B is more Rock/Blues oriented. Many have had a problem with that but to me it is fine even though Side A toward the end starts to sound all the same.

Ignoring the big band and xmas albums this is the most consistant listener since Chicago 17 (1984). The songs ranging from "ok" to "pretty decent".

The Good:

1. Horns! Chicago's signature has always been the horn section. The horns are blaring on this album.

2. Robert Lamm vocals. Robert on many of the 80s albums has been given just one or two vocal parts. On this album he was given vocals on the lead single "Feel". Very cool.

3. Side B where the band gets to rock out more.

4. 90 Degrees and Freezing, Come To Me Do (very mid 70s sounding pop song)

5. Rascal Flats on "Love Will Come Back". Didn't like this song at first but it has grown on me.

The not as good:

1. Lyrics. Some of these lyrics are cheesy and cliche. BUT with that said there are many Chicago songs over the years that I have enjoyed that were just as bad. I enjoyed the unreleased album lyrics so much that this is where I think the album suffered a bit. After reading some posts by Jason Scheff online I discovered that some of the lyrics are more personal once thought.

2. Too many ballads. I think they could have shaved it back a little.

3. Some very repetitive songs like "Aleady Gone". I think if the chorus was repeat a little less it would be more enjoyable. Same with "where were you"

4. Too many session players. I would love to see the current band playing the songs and not outside people. The worst of which is Keith Howland (the guitarist) being sidelined on 90 percent of the album. I have two of his solo albums and one of the things I was looking forward to was hearing him play. With that said some of the players used are top notch.

Over all if I am in the mood this makes great background music at work or while doing house cleaning. There are many other albums I would probably listen to before this but it is good enough to keep in my regular rotation. In this digital media age if I want I can always program out the songs I don't care for as much for a much better listening experience.

they still rock.......2007-06-30

Luis Mejia (son)- Even when Chicago went through an excellent career with great fame, they're not like those artists who fall after time and get enchanted by money. This cd is an excellent and delicate work, and they came up even inviting great artists such as ex member Peter Cetera, Celine Dion and Rascal Flats. The rock aspect domine the record, different from most of their albums (also good) that try to hit pop or even adult conteporany, and the every song almost sound like power ballads. Not their best work, though you'll find it enjoyable and not be dissapointed because of the time they took, the years or the style. Chicago shows they still focus on their genre, a little detoured by the adult contemporany efforts, but perfectly mature and enjoyable.

XXX (Rated For Certain Audience).......2007-04-25

I have to say like most Chicago fans that I am happy that hey have released a studio album with new material cause it was long overdue, but I have listened critically to this album numerous times and my first impression was right. Now this is not a comparison about old 70's chicago versus current chicago cause that is a matter of taste, but for the format that they were going for this album it did not work smoothly. If you are into the more ballad oriented Chicago, you might want to check this out, but I was dissapointed. There are some beautiful melodies sung with Jason Scheff and the writing material is not bad on this album, but I would have liked to see more imput writing wise from Bill Champlin and Robert Lamm since Scheff had the most input with seven songs. There was too many ballads in the beginning of the cd. I felt some more Chicago presence from track 7 and on, but not that much. I did not like the producer on this album. Chicago allowed over a dozen other musicians to play keyboards, drums, guitar, vocals etc that I felt cheated. I did not know who played on what track. My biggest beef with this album is the way it was produced. It had Pro Tools(digital recording tool)written all over and it was obvious. I don't care that they are recording digital cause that is the norm, but it was way over the top! The lead & back vocals(not to mention the brass)went through some kind of pitch correcting machine that is made the whole album plastic in the department of soul deliverance. The back vocals on the song "Caroline" sounded like a straight keyboard sample. Why do the these great singers Of Chicago have to go though that pop-machine? They sounded like those country pop boy bands that have these pristine vocals and it's painfully obvious. I do not mind effects on the voice but I still want to hear the human essence of a person's voice. Not some voice pitch corrector that was invented for most millinium pop artists who could not sing to begin with. These veterans have honed their craft so much that they should be proud to avoid such gadgets. I do not mind the loops, midi, sequencing, samples etc, cause chicago was always in the forefront of using technology in the days of producer Foster, and not to mention Chicago 18 when the drummer programmed all of his playing into a drum machine, but this album is so overly produced that they would have to counter the next Chicago 31 with some organic sounds to balance for what they allowed.

It's The Mix, Stupid!.......2007-03-27

I don't know. But is it that no one can mix in this age of all things digital? I'm not going to comment on the songs themselves since that's been covered. But man, listen to the older recordings, they jump out at you. This is so "one dimensional"...flat. Give me a 24 track Studer and a "analog" engineer anyday!

The Pros: Tracks 7-12 are listenable.

The Cons: Where oh where do I begin...

1) This is a Chicago album right? This album features session cats more than it actually features members of the band. When I buy a solo album by a favorite musician I expect him/her to be backed up by session cats. When I buy an album by a band, I expect the band to play on their own album-- not predominantly outside musicians. Am I expecting too much here? A band that traditionally kept things "in house" and only occassionally brought in guest musicians-- is it too much to ask and expect them to actually go back to keeping their music "in house"?

2) The track order. Okay whose bright idea was it to stack five or six ballads in a row? Tracks 7-12 are at least respectable and listenable but the listener would never know that if he/she started listening to the album from the beginning as it would put him/her to sleep well before it got to the meaty stuff.

3) The production. It's clean, it's polished, it's pristine... Trouble is, it's SO clean, SO polished, SO pristine any and all emotion is stripped completely from the music. There is no feeling here. It's all superficial, the depth and emotion of the album is completely AWOL-- this I don't blame on the band, but on producer Jay DeMarcus, who over-produced the album to the point where it was/is emotionally STERILE.

If you want to listen to Chicago, they did put out some pretty good albums, this isn't one of them-- it can't be, because it isn't even really Chicago (if you read the liner notes you'll realize that). Don't waste your time or money on this. It's better than Chicago 19, but then again getting a filling is better than getting a root canal-- I wouldn't exactly be rushing off to my dentist for either!

There's nothing diminutive about Vin Diesel or XXX, the secret agent-espionage film in which the muscular actor stars, so it's not surprising that the accompanying two-disc soundtrack is just as punishing. On the rock-oriented album, electronic production zaps through Rammstein's machine-gun blast "Feuer Frei" and Queens of the Stone Age's rough-riffed "Millionaire," while Mushroomhead and Hatebreed's straight-ahead screamers pack a ferocious punch. Other cuts are more forgiving--Bush's Gavin Rossdale contributes a soaring, crunchy rock anthem, Orbital's zooming, danceable "Technologicque Park" is inky as a starless night, and Moby's hypnotic, simple-synth "Landing" features Azure Ray on vocals. The hip-hop side isn't nearly as pulverizing--Nelly's stuttering "Stick Out Ya Wrist" and Big Tymers' "Still Fly" are especially laid-back and chilled. In the end, the results are mixed--Rossdale's song is livelier than most of his output with Bush, and the Queens and Rammstein cuts jump with life, as do those from Pastor Troy and Joi. Yet overall the generic rap disc and growling sections of its rock counterpart falter, suffering from all-too-familiar tricks and lackluster lyrics--sending the entire album sliding into mediocrity as a whole. --Annie Zaleski

this soundtrack sucks. that's all there is to it. with the exception of rammstein and QOTSA, all the other songs suck. and the rap songs weren't even in the movie! anyways, just buy rammstein's album "mutter" which has feuer frei on it, along with other excellent songs (i.e. Sonne) and also buy queens of the stone age's album "songs for the deaf". leave this soundtrack on the shelf where it belongs.

This movie was only good because of two reasons. RAMMSTEIN, and Queens of the Stone Age. Other than that, completel out of control P.O.S. that keeps its viewers contemplating whether they have died and this movie is their eternal punishment in hell.

The title suggests good beer and unwholesome entertainment, copious amounts of which have accompanied ZZ Top's music for the past 30 years. A decade--or two--removed from their arena-rock prime and cartoonish MTV reincarnation, ZZ Top's music has mellowed like a case of three-dollar rotgut, which is how the blues should age. Pared down, raw, and rough-edged, the Gibbons, Beard, and Hill of XXX's eight studio cuts sound increasingly like their grizzled Texas, Delta, and Southside blues heroes. The beats are tricked-up funky, Gibbons's growl and guitar are lugubrious, and the trio overall is lusty and unafraid to slow the tempo to a dirty dirge. Coupled with the band's loopy sense of subject matter and style--which ranges here from automotive theology ("Crucifixx-A-Flatt") to more prosaic concerns of boogie and t&a--are four live cuts that are often just as quirky, from Dusty Hill's slick lampoon croon of Elvis's "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" to a rave-up version of "Hey Mr. Millionaire" that features another inspired bit of ZZ goofiness--having guitar-god Jeff Beck guest . . . on vocals! --Jerry McCulley

Not quite as dirty as Rythmeen. But this album is another true original. The boys' darkest album yet. This one is not as roudy as Rythmeen, but better due to its understated and ominous quality. Another gem from the most underated legends in the music industry.

Worst Studio Album.......2006-12-18

I bought this album when it came out and was incredibly dissapointed. Again, you have to write a set of songs to go along with that great fuzz toned guitar. Plodding, boring and lazy are a few of the words that come to mind when I think of this album. I was a huge fan of Rhythmeen, which seemed like a re-birth of the old Top sound to me. This was a huge step in the wrong direction. So, in my humble opinion if you want a good later day ZZ Top album pick up Rhythmeen or even Mescalaro.

Where are the songs ?.......2006-12-13

Tone, schmone, what's tone without a song ? Weak songs and melodies, Mescalero and Rhythmeen are MUCH better for this top era

Smokin' Rhythms and Guitar Tone to Boot!.......2005-01-05

This recording is one of the most mature and creative recordings, of ZZ Top, to date. The drum patterns are ultra-cool and the overall vibe is even somewhat avante-garde (but in a good way). In short, it's modern and retro all in one fell swoop. And each subsequent listen gives something new. Give it a try!

ZZ Top's worst album, but still a nice listen!.......2004-07-31

Saying that XXX is ZZ Top's worst album is very ironic, for when someone says that this is a band's worst album, they usually hate it. But ZZ Top is a different story. Through their amazing ability to remain consistent, they have produced their worst album, but still so good that one comes back for repeated listens. Many bands would kill to have this record be their best. The songs aren't on a level with La Grange or Tush or something like that, except for a couple: Poke Chop Sandwich and Crucifixx a Flatt. I only skip over three of these songs: MAde Into A Movie, Dreadmonboogaloo, and Belt Buckle, and Belt Buckle is growing on me. The rest of them are good and are worth repeat listens. So, this is probably the greatest worst album ever produced! Leave it to ZZ Top to do that. ZZ Top's albums are grouped into three areas, those of absolute brilliance, those of greatness, and those of goodness. Absolute brilliance goes to Tres Hombres, Fandango!, Deguello, Eliminator, and Rhythmeen. Greatness goes to Rio Grande Mud, Tejas, Afterburner, Recycler, Antenna, and Mescalero. And goodness goes to ZZ Top's First Album, El Loco, and XXX. Point is, even when ZZ Top makes a bad album, it is still good enough to listen to. How many bands can you say that about. Remember these two rules when considering what to buy from ZZ Top:

A wonderful collection of sexually charged electronic tracks by some of the hottest and most respected names in dance/electronic today. This soundtrack to a documentary about porn stars fits the images perfectly, and even taken on its own this collections compiles some of the best artists with Peaches, Felix Da Housecat featuring Princess Superstar and even Tiga covering one of Nelly's summertime hits. This album does what the porn stars themselves do, take sexuality to another level leaving the viewer (or listener) unable to tell if what they are seeing (or hearing) is really nasty or extremely sexy. What ever the decision this album is worth the listen.

Only AA but..........2004-11-22

Recently a book called XXX came out. In the book, there were several intimate portraits of various adult film stars along with lots of information about them. Then HBO made a documentary about the book. And so finally here I am, reviewing the soundtrack to a documentary to a book. At first, I found the very idea of this soundtrack to be excessive and sort of obnoxious. That is until I realized that I really liked a lot of the music on the soundtrack. Basically, this is a really good collection of tunes. I, of course, already had the Velvet Underground song and was already familiar with the infamous Peaches. Her song "AA XXX" seemed to be a inspiration for the documentary's title or perhaps just a great coincidence. But all the songs on the CD are really great! It turned me on to Princess Superstar, who I'm going to be checking out very soon. Tiga and Heather Hunter (adult firm star turned musician!) both contribute certified party bombs to this collection. Also the exclusive Ladytron track ("Sugar") is a winner. Sometimes you want a fun mix of songs to put on and this soundtrack is shockingly satisifying and worth your dollars! Check it out if you get the chance.

Creo que este tributo pudo ser mucho mejor, la verdad cuenta con demasiadas participaciones, que termina siendo casi un desastre musical, una verdadera lastima porque las canciones de uno de los mejores compositores mexicanos, JOSE ALFREDO JIMENEZ, no se merecia este casi desastre musical, se puede ver claramente que el objetivo de la disquera era vender el producto a toda costa, lo cual me parece bastante ridiculo a estas alturas, cuando se han generado millones de ventas de los discos de jose alfredo, bueno retomando las participaciones que me parecen bastante buenas y recomendables son: JUMBO/LA LUNA, MOENIA, SAUL Y ELEFANTE,BUNBURY, este ultimo fue removido de la edicion de estados unidos, que me parece bastante mal, que lastima que este tributo no sea como el de hace cuatro anos atras a jose jose, bastante malo, mejor escuchenlo antes de comprarlo.

I was actually desapointed that the US version of this album did not include all 20 songs that originally has in the Mexican and Latin American version.
To me the most impressive version of a Jose Alfredo Jimenezsong has been made by Enrique Bunbury. He has performed this song since 1997 and has closed most of his concerts with it. It has now become a clasic of his shows. The live version included originally in the mexican version of this album is the best of all 20 songs.
Other than that, this album is great. All the musicians did a great job bringing back to life the songs of this great writer.

Plenty of Bang for Your Buck!.......2003-11-30

I was absolutly blown away by Aterciopelados beautiful rendition of one of my favirote Jose Alfredo Jimenez tunes, "Que Te Vaya Bonito". It brings a whole other dimension to the song. Fantastic.

Another knockout is "Serenata a la luna" done to perfection by Julieta Venegas. It makes me itch even more to hear her new album. Other notables include El Tri, Saul Hernandez, Ana Belen and King Chango. This album I believe is important, as it reintroduces the young generations to Jose Alfredo, who was the greatest composer of all time in my book. I hope that this will prompt young ones to seek out their grandparents records, and acquiant themselves with the one who helped shape Latin music as we know it today, perhaps more than anyone else.

El Rey rocks on.......2003-09-04

It is unfortunate that so little information is provided about this super collection of songs . First of all the disc features many of the heavies and up and comers of RocnEspanol that give a modern twist to the magical lyrics of Jose Alfredo Jimenez. Featured artists include Saul Hernandez, Elefante, Aterciopelados, Julieta Venegas, El Tri, Rabanes, Jumbo, Joaquin Sabina, Miguel Mateos, Moenia and Mana just to name a few as there are seven more interpreters I didn't mention. None of the songs really sound like the originals by Jose Alfredo, also known as El Rey. Purists that are into Jose Alfredo might think this is wrong but believe me , from one Jose Alfredo fan to another, these songs rock and have much of the same emotion of the originals. Beginning with the first song, appropriately entitled "El Rey' by Moderatto, the tribute and homge begins to one of Mexico's greatest composers of popular ranchera music. Moderatto starts the disc with a Clash("Should I stay or Should I go") like beat and sound that suddenly changes rhythm and goes into an uptempo frenzied beat as the singer changes persona and does his best deep voiced(ahhh, thank you, thank you very much like) Elvis impersonation to set the tempo for El Rey songs like you've never heard them before. All of the songs rock, some have a gentle edge but all carry the impact and emotion of El Rey's lyrics, which unfortuantely, are not included. El Rey's music was often about love and the inevitable heartbreak and he seems to have had more than his share of both. A beautiful interpretaion of "Que Te Vaya Bonito" by Colombia's Aterciopelados features Andrea cutting straight to the heart. She sings, "Ojala que te vaya bonito, ojala que se acaben tus penas, que te digan que yo ya no existo, que conoscas personas mas buenas, que te den lo que no pude da te, aunque yo te alla dado de todo, nunca mas volvere a molestarte, te adore, te perdi, ya ni modo."( Lets hope that things are beautiful for you, let's hope that your troubles end, that they tell you I don't exist, that you meet better people, that they give you what I couldn't give you, although I gave you everything, never more will I return to bother you, I loved you, I lost you, now there's no way)." This is a loose translation but if you are a non-Spanish speaker you get the gist although it sounds better in Spanish. Another lyrical sample as Andrea continues in the same song " Cuantas luzes dejastes encendidas, yo no se como voy a apagar las,"(How many lights did you leave lit, I don't know how I will turn them off). In this case the lights refer to unfinished business and matters of the heart as El Rey often used metaphors. El Rey had a way with words and these modern interpreters pay their dues to him by presenting his music to new generations of listeners some thirty years after his death. "Tu Recuerdo y Yo ' is a jamming song with a Latin-ska-reggae beat and a flavor that sounds similar to King Chango ragamuffin delivery ,with echoes and shadows of El Rey, sipping tequila in the corner of a bar because "me rompistes mi corazon(you broke my heart)." Along the same style of presentation is Rabanes singing "La Media Vuelta." Again,this is a song about what happens when people go their seprate ways as the wild Panamanians sing amidst blaring horns. It's a happy sad song. There are several curiosities on this disc, most notably that all the songs are El Rey numbers with the exception of three which are penned and performed by Saul Hernandez(Califanes/Jaguares), Reyli Barba(Elefante) and Alejandro Lara(El Tri). Somehow these songs fit right in so maybe they had El Rey in mind when writting them. Also there are some nice mixes of mariachi music mixed in to the RocnEspanol beats. There is also some rap that is outstanding. For the most part though it is straight ahead RocnEspanol. There is a rocking hybrid rap version of Camino de Guanajuato with El Rey's famous declaration"La vida no vale nada(Life is worthless). Mana's version of "Te Solte la Rienda" ( I let go of the reins) is taken from one of their live performances as they often include a medley of El Rey song's in their performances. It is an appropriate song to include in the tribute and is an accoustic number that is also lively. There is a haunting version of "Cuando Sale La Luna" by Jumbo that is a provocative and seductive electronic tinged song will make the hairs on your neck stand up. There are nineteen different artists featured on this disc that goes from soft ballads or boleros that sound close to the originals to jacked up numbers that would probably make El Rey sit upright and scratch his head from his bed after a long night of partying. The booklet is colorful with a bunch of psychedelic looking pictures of Jose Alfredo in swirls of neon colors and negative digital imagery. The center spread has El Rey sitting at a table with bottles labeled XXX(30 anniversary of his death) and a crowned halo surrounded by all the artists featured. Fittingly enough the song "El Rey" is also the closing song and peformed by Miguel Mateos.In this version, Mateos delivers a soulful song that has that finale of the show, slow swaying crowd beat that has a candle lit. This has been my summer 2003 disc that I play endlessly and if you like RocnEspanol, or more importantly, El Rey, you too will be playing it often. You will love this tribute disc that is a great collaboration under the executive production of Jose Alfredo Jiminez Jr.

Rock or Rap...........2003-01-16

For those of you who loved Fast and the Furious here is another that hits your heart. Ok Im not going to praise the fact that this flick had a plot and all, but what can you say, wemon, money, action, cars, explosions, and rock or rap depending on your style. This movie is not marketed to a certain crowd, what it does is brilliant, it tries to bring rock and rap into the same culture. As a person that DJ's and listens to all kinds of music, I would recomend this album for the rap listener or the rock listener, for the ones who dont think this is a good rock album. WAKE UP, rawk has changed since 1980's its a new style, get over it. Thats all I have to say I guess. xXx is a .... by the way. ~OUT

Lots and lots of songs to skip.......2002-12-30

I bought this CD in a little fit of Vin Diesel-induced hysteria -- pre-ordered it even. I thought it would be a tighter soundtrack. Lots of songs you only heard snippets of in the film (which was forgettable anyway -- in spite of Mr. Diesel's lovely muscles). You'd be better off checking out the playlist first, and deciding if you want to make the investment.

A discrace.......2002-12-23

First of all, while somewhat irrelevant, the movie was absolutely horrible. I can't believe movies like that still make it to the theatres - it was rediculous how that dude was supposed to pull off those stunts.. I mean.. you CAN'T hop a 12 foot barbed wire fence on a dirt bike without a ramp.. YOU CAN'T! And.. ok, well I could go on and on about how ... the movie was, but that's not what this is for.

The soundtrack is a real disappointment. I, being a rock fan, saw the preview for it and expected some good music (featuring Lords of Acid and Soil in the preview) but they didn't even make an appearance on the sound track. The only motivation to by this CD, for me, would be for Rammstein and Drowning Pool - but I would NOT spend that kind of money for 2 songs. As for the rap side - rap is a joke, I'm sorry, but it is, though I'd imagine that most of the people who enjoyed the movie enough to think about soundtracks like rap (personality type) I'd imagine I'd get a lot of flames for this post. Oh well.

AWESOME SOUNDTRACK! ASWESOME MOVIE!.......2002-10-01

First off, I have to say, this movie was a great action flick! I saw it twice in theaters, and cannot WAIT until it comes out on video/DVD.
Now for the soundtrack: I think this is one of the best soundtracks out there! I am a huge fan of alternative music AND rap/hiphop/R & B, so this soundtrack satisfies both of my musical tastes. The music is a good mix of loud, energetic music, with softer songs intertwined.
It is a great soundtrack, awesome movie, not to mention a really good looking actor!

one of the best soundtracks EVER.......2007-05-25

After seeing the XXX: State of the Union movie, I wanted to see if the soundtrack was any good. I ended up buying it due to the inclusion of three words on the track list: "Three Days Grace". Yup, I'm a huge TDG fan, so I bought the CD specifically for that track. The track in question is "Just Like Wylin'", a mash-up done specifically for the soundtrack of Bone Crusher's "Wyle Out" and Three Days Grace's smash single "Just Like You"; interestingly enough, "Wyle Out" also appears on the soundtrack, in the #8 song position ("Just Like Wylin'" hit on track 14). Originally, I thought that was the only good song on the CD, but as I began to listen to the other songs, I quickly deduced that this was one of the best soundtracks I had ever heard. I didn't really care for the opening Petey Pablo track, but was absolutely blown away by Ice Cube's "Anybody Seen the PoPo?". The next track, "Fight the Power", is a cover of a Public Enemy song done masterfully by metal band Korn, with a guest appearance by rapper Xzibit. Track 4, Dead Celebrity Status' "Messiah", ties for me with best song on the CD; it's one of the only rap songs I will unashamedly play in front of my friends and say I like it. The next good track is P.O.D.'s "The Payback", which sadly wasn't featured in the movie, a disappointment considering the track is perfect for the movie. Velvet Revolver contributes the next track and I wasn't really impressed with that one, either (never have liked VR that much). Some more good, but filler, rap tracks come in (including one by Moby and Public Enemy that I so could have done without, but excluding Bone Crusher's "Wyle Out"), but the Bone Crusher/ Three Days Grace track saves it for me. Then comes the real surprise, and without a doubt the best song on the CD: Labba's "Did It Again". This one actually hooked me from the very beginning; I love the line in the chorus: "Rap music will never die, all we do is f*cking multiply..." Yeah, that's the shiznit. The last track, "The Good Song" by Tonex, really doesn't need to be in the CD at all.

So, to recap, here are my favorite songs in order:

it could have been better than it actually turned out.

Like a couple of other reviewers have mentioned, I was very disappointed that the song played during the boat chase sequence -- "I Play You Lose" by The Grusomes featuring Tezz -- was not included in the soundtrack (I really liked that song), and a song by P.O.D. was included in the album, even though it wasn't heard in the soundtrack.

Other than that minor disappointment (along with several others, including the exclusion of Bond's version of "Victory", the absence of Marco Beltrami's opening credits theme and Julian Bunetta's "State Of The Union", which is heard during the closing credits), it's a nice blend of hard rock and rap, with some unusual musical pairings, such as Moby and Public Enemy, and KoRn and Xzibit.

If "I Play You Lose", "State Of The Union", the opening credits theme and "Victory" had been included, I would have given this soundtrack compilation four stars, instead of 3 and a half.

For those interested, the "violin" song played during the party was "VICTORY", performed by BOND, (Haylie Ecker, Eos Chater, Tania Davis & Gay-Yee Westerhoff...yes that's 4 girls, not 3), and I too was very entertained by the entire movie, its soundtrack with ALL the various numbers a very pleasing experience for me. BOND has their own web site, Amazon.com also has their albums available. I just wish I could find their 3 videos they have produced.
