Amazon.com essential recording
One Love, a remastered retrospective of poli-spiritual musical icon Bob Marley's major-label work completed before his 1980 death from cancer, may well replace 1984's Legend as the best-selling reggae album of all time. One Love is 20 cuts to Legend's 16, a set that plays in chronological order of release as opposed to party mix. As with the latter, One Love presents the sweet organ-driven and feedback-scarred live version of "No Woman, No Cry" as well as album versions of classics like "I Shot the Sheriff," "Get Up, Stand Up," and "Jamming." Single versions of "Buffalo Soldier" and "Exodus" sidle up to the full-band cut of "Redemption Song" and the soulful Marley/Curtis Mayfield medley, "One Love/People Get Ready." A fine sampler of the Tuff Gong years from 1972's Catch a Fire and onward, One Love is aimed at the casual Marley fan rather than the hardcore completist, though its final track is indeed a rarity: the Marley-penned, Lee "Scratch" Perry-produced "I Know a Place." A moving ballad-styled anthem of solidarity and freedom, it was recorded in 1977 and is unavailable on any other Bob Marley & the Wailers album. One Love gives clear evidence of why Marley's legacy endears and endures nearly a generation after his passing. --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
Good, But Left Out Important Songs........2006-06-24
Good, (well all Bob Marley is good) but I still have that feeling from what I got 5 years ago when it was released that they left out some very important songs, yes I am delighted that they have put "So Much Trouble In The World" on it as it is a flawless song, but reasons why they have left out "Satisfy My Soul" and the oringinal "Redemption Song", still leave me saying why.
I do like how they have put it in year order, and have included a song off each album, apart from Babylon By Bus, well they just had to put on "No Woman No Cry" of Live, so I will let them off.
"Roots Rock Reggae", is another great song deserving a place on this album, but maybe "War" or "Positive Vibration" to replace that, or to add on to it.
"Coming In From The Cold" deserves every right to be on Legend and this, it is just an amazing song and has had not enough credit for it.
Otherwise that, it is a strong album, and worth the money.
A good purchase.
Forget "Legend" this is the Best Bob Marley Compilation that's Out There!.......2005-12-31
For many years, "Legend" was the only truly great compilation of this man's life's work but if you don't already have that album or if you are new to Bob Marley and want to find out what all the fuss is about, this hard-to-find version is really the best that there is. 20 great track selections and one track, the last one, that's not even on any other Marley album and most importantly of all, the sound quality is brilliant! Too many albums use the "remastered" claim too easily and sometimes even falsely to get you to "upgrade" from the album you already have but this is not one of them as this disc has been remastered to perfection. If you are not too wild about "live" performances just like me, then don't worry too much about the more expensive 2-disc version as this great one-disc version will more than suffice. Great track selections, great sound quality, great value for money, this is THE Bob Marley one-disc compilation album to get. Highly recommended!
An excellent, underrated Marley compilation.......2005-12-01
One Love. A Bob Marley hits compilation.
INTRODUCTION:
Bob Marley. Over the years, he has reigned supreme as the ultimate name in reggae music. Despite passing away in the early eighties, his music remains consistently popular. And it isn't hard to see why, as it really does stand the test of time. Despite dying young, Marley's career contained a plethora of music, and as such, many compilations of his work have been released over the years. The most popular compilation of Marley's work, though, would have to be the Legend compilation, released in the middle of the eighties. However, Marley has a number of other, lesser-known compilations. How does the lesser-known One Love measure up? Keep reading and find out!
OVERVIEW:
Bob Marley's One Love compilation was released in 2001. The compilation features twenty tracks, spanning many years of Marley's career.
REVIEW:
Bob Marley has a LOT of compilations, no questions asked. None of these compilations are bad, by any means. In fact, every one of them seems to succeed in areas that others don't. Legend is the best-known of all of Marley's compilations, and it isn't hard to see why. It was a single-disc, affordable compilation that hits all of the high points of Marley's career. However, just because Legend is the all-around best-known and most widely revered of all of Marley's collection does not mean it is the best one. One Love is an underrated gem of a hits compilation. For the most part, the tracklist is similar to Legend, but there are some changes. The set drops one track from Legend, Satisfy My Soul, and adds seven others. Also, this compilation uses the full-band version of Redemption Song, rather than the acoustic one that was featured on Legend. The order of the tracklist also got a total revamp. While Legend featured a non-chronological running order that was well suited for it being a "party" album of sorts, One Love uses a chronological order. I have always preferred chronological retrospectives in that they show you how the artist evolved over the years, and it works excellently for Bob Marley. Granted, some people may prefer the non-chronological running order of Legend, and it's not hard to see why they do, really.
OVERALL:
No matter which Bob Marley hits compilation you buy, you'll get a damn fine overview of his career. If you're just the casual Bob Marley fan who wants an affordable, single-disc overview of his career, you have come to the right place. Despite not being as well-known as Legend, this set is nothing less in the quality department. If you're a casual fan or just someone who is seeking an affordable yet effective introduction to the music of Marley, this is just what you need. Highly recommended!
EDITION NOTES:
Sadly, because this compilation is not as well-known as the classic Legend compilation, it is not as readily available. For that reason alone, you may want to go with the single-disc remastered version of Legend. Still, if you can find One Love, it is a worthwhile set.
Thank you.......2005-09-08
I didn't get the cd as quickly as I expected but when I did I didn't have any complaints! Thank you
Is this a bootleg?.......2005-06-28
Okay, here is the major problem with this release: it is not a TuffGong/Island release. The Marley family has struggled with this reality for a long time. Because Bob's music has become so widespread and lacks the legal protections that American and European recording artists have enjoyed for decades, his recordings have gone onto the cheap market (flea markets, push carts, gas stations, etc-and now Amazon). Buying One Love only serves to strengthen these sleazy record companies and hurts reggae artists and the Jamaican economy. Look closely at the albums before you buy them. Find out what label has produced them and try to stick with TuffGong when possible.

GREAT DISCOVERY.......2007-03-12
Now I know how Colombus felt, when setting foot on American soil. He had to say "Great Discovery", and these are exactly my sentiments when I first heard Susan Tedeschi!!! So gifted, so versatile, jazz, blues, R&B, Susan can sing so many music types.I also think she has a Joplinesques quality in her voice.. Jack Forrester
great, but..........2006-06-02
This smells like a "She's left our record company so we'll put out a best of" package. Fortunately, Susan Tedeschi has done so much quality material on Wait for Me and Just Won't Burn that this disc is a blinder. The two bonus tracks are really nice. This could have been great with a little digging, but...
This is a five star recording, docked one star for record company lack of imagination. Definately recommend
A 5 Star collection...but where are the extras?.......2006-01-11
Looking over the song list, this is a fine CD capturing most of her high points in one place. It would be nice to get some early demos, outtakes, rarities, for those of us that have been with her from the outset.
Had the producers decided to include the cover of the Big Mama Thornton standard "HOUND DOG", from Tedeschi's 1995 debut, it would have shown her lineage and earliest debt to the blues. Blues women have pioneered the sound for decades getting little notice, in a male dominated industry and genre.
They might have included "Alone"(live)off the Japanese release of WAIT FOR ME disc as a Bonus Track.
Or the ex-SRV backing band DOUBLE TROUBLE's version of "In the Garden" for a change of pace to the mellower take found on her solo CD.
How about the slinky & smokin' duet she performs with her one-time producer Tom Hambridge off his BALDERDASH album, "Opposites Attrack" Yousah!!!
It is not a knock on Susan, she probably didn't have control over this release anyways and the music is top notch. There are often licensing issues to untangle as well.
But with 80 minutes on a CD, how about treating long time fans to a few extras for being there over the years.
For newbies just looking to catch a glimpse of blues-rock in the vain of Bonnie Raitt or maybe Janis, this will be a nice pick up.
The BEST from the BEST!.......2005-12-16
I first heard Susan on public radio KPLU in Washington state (www.kplu.org) on their weekend blues shows a few months ago. I was intrigued by her voice and guitar talent and quickly added her "Just Won't Burn" CD to my blues collection. This CD (The Best of Susan Tedeschi - Episode One") picks the cream from "Just Won't Burn", and adds more great tracks from other albums (which I am in the process of ordering now). Every track on this CD is great. Great variety too -- hard rocking blues, covers of old standards (Don't Think Twice, It's Alright ), fantastic slide guitar on "Looking for Answers", incredible vocals on "It Hurts So Bad", "Gonna Move" - a catchy tune that brings a smile to your face, and a sweet tender song (In the Garden). I have listened to this CD over and over on a just-ending week-long driving trip and it's just great every time I listen. This CD has now joined my "desert island CD collection" as one of my top three picks (other two are "Kind of Blue" and "Time Out"). I'd hate to have to pick just one of these three - I can listen to all of them over and over and over!

A Pleasant Surprise.......2006-11-14
I enjoy this compilation of greatest hits from One Way very much! I added many of the jams to my "Divapod", including the Alicia Myers joints...which I would have been heated if they were not on there! The first time I listened to this, I was pleasantly surprised because songs I didn't even know One Way were responsible for, were on it. My favorite One Way joints are "Don't Think About It", "Cutey Pie" and "You Can Do It", (one of my mom's favorite songs as well)! Every joint I wanted to be on this cd was...it was like they called me and asked me what I wanted! The Northeast Coast was not exposed to many of the songs that people in their reviews are mentioning..so I can not express discontent like they are, I can only express pure satisfaction. This one is definitely worth the purchase and a must have for any serious music lover.
The Best of One Way.......2006-07-13
Excellent Album, especially the solos of Alicia Myers who has a very powerfull voice. Definitely worth purchasing and is good listening pleasure. Brings back lots of good memories. An added bonus would have been the inclusion of the version of "Feelings" featuring Al Hudson & the Soul Partners.
Gimme that funk..........2006-05-24
I wish I had the original master tapes and the rights to re-release these classic albums myself! MCA, Universal or whoever, let me at that funk because it's real sad when the Japanese get it before we do! Even Germany have the first One Way album before Detroit! Come on, I know the head companies aren't based in America anymore, and it's all about the Platinum and the Diamonds in this industy, but this is about the classics, respectfully. I have an excellent ear and can also remaster these albums to the T, and then some. The fans want it, and that includes Me. Please, just give me "Wild Night!" Been cheated for too long on these doggone imports (almost 40 to 50 bucks for the "Who's Foolin' Who?" album... the irony of the price and the title's killin' me right now!) This compilation wasn't a thought-out venture at all. Well, let's just see if we get an anthology for Al Hudson & company One Way or another...

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02
This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.
Great CD.......2005-11-01
This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.
Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27
This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.
I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.
Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.
Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08
This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of
the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have
done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some
of which still show some of their age, but come across quite
well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this
disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to
get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any
more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to
try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's
early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.
If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!
The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07
I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.
I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.
I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

Sweet Jesus!.......2007-06-11
I discovered this group by reading in the liner notes of the Grateful Dead's 'American Beauty' album, I also read that Jerry Garcia contributed some Pedal Steel Guitar to Brewer & Shipley's 'Tarkio' album, and then a good friend of mine played me "One Toke Over The Line" and I knew that I had to hear more.
Basically what I was dealing with a singer/songwriter duo that easily rivals Simon & Garfunkel, America, and CSNY. However, their sound has a more country twang. Starting off with the hippie anthems "People Love Each Other" and the title hit, I knew that there was something special with these guys.
These guys do good political songs like "Oh Mommy", nice folk tunes like "Ruby On The Morning", and good road trip anthems like "Rise Up (Easy Rider)" and "Tarkio Road". They even jam out a little with "Fifty States Of Freedom" and their superb covers of Jim Pepper's "Witchi-Tai-To" and Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower".
If you like the country-rock stylings of Gram Parsons, The Flying Burrito Brothers, New Riders Of The Purple Sage, or The Grateful Dead, you'll love Brewer and Shipley, and this is the best place to start with their music.
A nice overview.......2007-03-30
This is a nice overview of Brewer & Shipley's work. It includes their one big hit, the classic "One Toke Over The Line", and their minor hits "Tarkio Road" and "Shake off the Demon." It also includes some hippie favorites like "Rise Up Easy Rider", "People Love Each Other", and "50 States of Freedom." A solid collection of early 70's hippie music!
Too much missing, but what's here is Great!!.......2004-06-12
Looking at the track list for "The Best Of" I was hoping for more of "Weeds"-Brewer and Shipley's 1969 Kama Sutra debut. Even with 7 tracks, the powers-that-be chose to miss 3 of the best ones; 'Indian Summer,' 'Too Soon Tomorrow,' and 'Oh, Sweet Lady.' all three offer some of the best melodies and harmonies on the album.
In fact, I don't think there is a track from "Weeds" that doesn't belong on a true greatest hits, really. And, of course, "Weeds" is out of print!
"Tarkio" is a good album, too. I know you have to stop and make a choice somewhere. It seems a shame, though.
Oh yes, get this CD. All are strong tracks. A decent overview.
Brewer and Shipley left the craziness of LA for Kansas City in the late 60's. And KC still loves 'em. Wonderful to hang with and perfect match for making music. Very adequate for a duo live.
Fortunately you can now get the first two albums complete from
Collector's Choice Music with amazing liners!
Woefully incomplete.......2003-11-07
I suppose Brewer and Shipley were "one hit wonders" to most, but not where I came from (Kansas). Tom & Mike were our local heroes, KC area boys who made a name for themselves doing what they loved, making music.
Much of their best music didn't get AM radio airplay. "Oh Mommy", was our pseudo-hippie anthem and, thankfully, is included in this woefully inadequate compilation.
Tom & Mike harmonize as well as any brother act. Their songs have a wonderful folkie sound that harkens back to a safer, simpler time when "make love not war" was our slogan.
I originally gave this CD 3 stars because this "collection" misses quite a few of my favorite B/S songs like, "Song From Platte River", "Don't Want To Die In Georgia", and Jackson Browne's "Rock Me On The Water".
But I added back one star because it includes my favorite B/S song, "Rise Up (Easy Rider)", and another great one "Fifty States of Freedom".
It's a shame that Rhino or some other smart label hasn't put together a decent B/S package.
Nice Collection Of Their Hits!.......2002-07-23
I can relate to the comments made by a previous viewer regarding the fact that Brewer and Shipley were really one hit wonders, but they were by no means a one-trick act. On the contrary, they were very talented and very skilled performers and artists. For example, anyone who listens closely to their "Shake Off The Demon" album will quickly recognize the depths of their abilities. So, although their catalogue of hits is short, the range of their work is much broader, and it is a shame that much of that work is not included here. I would much prefer to see an anthology that addressed a lot of the excellent folk-rock releases they produced, including a lot of the material from the "Shake Off The Demon" Album. For example, their treatment of Jackson Browne's "Rock Me On The Water" is probably the single best interpretation of the song I have yet heard, yet it is not available anywhere for anyone not having the original vinyl album.
What is included here is good stuff, but there is too little of it and it is not fully representative of all their work. Once again, like a previous reviewer I feel that much more should be included from their earlier and more elemental phases. Yet this is not to deny the appeal of what is here, including "One Toke Over The Line", "Tarkio Road", "Oh, Mommy, "People Love Each Other", and a lovely cover of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower'. Also here is "Shake Off The Demon", "Yankee Lady", and an interesting number called "Fifty States Of Freedom" which is kind of an instant ticket back to those fabled times in the sixties when such commentaries meant something. All in all, this is an interesting album, and one I am glad to own, but I am hoping for a more complete and more representative release of the corpus of their work, including the bulk of the songs from "Shake Off The Demon" someday soon. Enjoy!

Faure Essentials.......2007-05-29
If you want to persuade someone to listen to Faure then this is the album to begin with. It contains the very best known melodies.
music inside you.......2005-10-01
Have you ever felt music inside you when watching the sun going down, when felling the breeze in your hair, when smelling the grass in a gentle summer night...? The music of this CD may remind you that part of yourself that we may tend to forget in our busy life, liked the words of Celibidache which I liked very much: "the music is not the notes, YOU are the music"!
You would feel in this way, when listening to this CD.
An excellent compilation of Faure's work.......2003-02-15
I bought this cd not knowing anything about Gabriel Faure's music. A local orchestra was planning to perform Masques et Bergamasques, so I picked this cd being the most inexpensive way of buying something I possibly was not going to enjoy. But nothing could be further from the truth. I love this cd! It has such a nice variation of formats: piano concerto (Ballede in F sharp major Op. 19), piano solo (Baracarolle No.1 in A minor, Op. 20), vocal (Requiem, Op. 48), and symphony (Masques et Bergamasques). The music is also well played by various artists...no complaints on the performance side. And if it is true that one becomes the thoughts and vibrations that one allows to enter his or her mind, then by listening to Faure you may find yourself becoming a bit more tender, patient, and even romantic in your ways.
Romance.......2002-11-23
Bought this CD originally because of Romance, but I like it all. This is a new composer for me and I'm glad I found Faure'.
good value.......2002-03-01
i'd recommend this to anyone who wants to get an inexpensive taste for faure's music. The recordings are decent, and the selection is interesting. After this, check out his nocturnes for piano and of course the Requiem.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A member of the band Heatmiser, Elliot Smith recorded home demos on any equipment he could get his hands on. His first "solo" album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases. The title track is remarkable but with four songs referred to in sequential order as "No Name #1," "No Name #2," etc. ... the inspiration isn't always fully firing. Blessed with a quiet angelic voice and a lyrical mind that easily transforms the squalid details of everyday life into something worth hearing about twice, Smith stood on the verge of getting it on. With his next, self-titled release, he did.--Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
Great Album.......2007-04-17
This maybe my favorite Elliott Smith album next to Either/Or. I would purchase this album with Either/Or if I were just getting into Elliott Smith. It is a very chill album to listen to while driving at night, doing homework, or going to sleep. Elliott's acoustic guitar playing and lyrics are very well arranged. Give it a glance.
beautiful.......2007-03-13
i bought this cd completely on a whim at a local cd store. it took a few listens for certain songs to really sink in, but now i absolutely love it. No Name #3 and Condor Avenue are worth the price tag alone
A glimpse inside the audio diary of Elliot Smith.......2007-03-05
This unpretentious cd is sparse and mysterious as was the late recording artist himself, who died under mysterious circumstances shortly after receiving critical acclaim. I think it is the best representation of Smith, who has other more polished cd's that seem to have somehow missed his essence. This one seems to have been recorded early on, low-fi in a basement or bedroom, and lets you get up close to him without studio intervention. There are many tracks that don't even have bass or drums, just guitars and voice. The tunes are haunting and insecure, but will soon get right under your skin. This is no high-gloss commercial venture, but more like a glimpse inside somebody's audio diary.
Three Cheers.......2006-07-16
Roman Candle has a very endearing adolescence to it much softer than Elliott's later work. An innocent recording of someone's youth.
Smith's Genius.......2006-07-09
Elliot Smith has never written anything but beautiful, listenable music and this first release is no exception. His fan base should only grow. He was a genius.

Customer Reviews:
Six discs, great price, but... a few obvious choices missing........2007-07-16
EMI's spate of Callas re-issues and compilations in the past few years is more distressing than commendable. First, what does it say about the state of the classical music market today, when a label's marquee artist is a soprano who passed away thirty years ago, and whose recordings are a half-century old? Second, just how many ways can you re-package Callas?
Those quandaries aside, this is highly recommended to those with a passing interest in either Callas, or opera in general. With six discs tucked inside a standard double jewel case, offered at a bargain price, it's a no-brainer. So what if linear and biographical notes are missing? So much has been written about Callas, it's doubtful that anyone could come up with original essay about her life and artistic legacy.
Again, if you have no Callas or (gasp!) no opera in your CD collection, BUY THIS COMPILATION. However, those of us who already have both will find some glaring omissions.
In my mind, there are two pitfalls where a six-disc Callas retrospective is concerned. First, the need to achieve a balance in Maria's studio output produces something of a constraint. For example, there could have easily been two Verdi discs. As previously noted, Sempre Libera is missing. But there are other examples, such as Ernani, Involami, Tu Che Le Vanita(!), and arias from Nabucco.
Second, creating a balanced list of 100 Maria Callas excerpts inevitably includes some that expose her improper technique. Now, as rival diva Leyla Gencer once stated, Callas had the "sacred fire," which compensated for her imperfect techique (I'm paraphrasing here). That fire roars with life when it comes to dramatic verismo arias, such as La Mamma Morta, Voi Lo Sapete, and Suicidio. It doesn't crackle when it comes a Mozart aria like Or Sai Chi L'Onore, where her utter lack of Mozartean technique is laid bare. Callas just couldn't work her magic over it, like she did with Mi Tradi Quell'alma Ingrata.
These are minor quibbles, though, in the final analysis. You get double the content of the Callas La Divina collector's box set, for less than half the cost!
The greatest opera singer of the 20th century........2007-05-20
Here in one incredibly inexpensive package (I paid $15) are the "juicy bits" of Maria Callas's studio recordings. These six disks which run for 7 and 3/4 hours contain 99 arias, duets and concerted numbers from her studio work plus "Ah, fors'e lui" from the live recording of the Lisbon "Traviata" for the total of "100 Best". (NB: "Sempre libera" is not included.) This is probably EMI's last ditch effort to extract some value out of their Callas catalog as the European copyrights are starting to expire. Well, this is to our advantage. Whether you are a long time Callas fan and completist or a newcomer, this is well worth the money to have all these highlights ready at your finger tips.
The only complaint I have about this set is the complete lack of texts and notes. Usually these days this material is put on the web for bargain releases, but I was unable to locate any for this set. As Callas's art was in the shading of the texts, newcomers especially need to be able to follow along.
Grab this now while it is still available.
One of the best collection of Callas on CD.......2007-05-13
This is realy Maria Callas 100 best classics collection, surprisingly with very good sound ,without any noise or distortion .Six CDs, each of them 70 -79 min very enjoyable..Thank you EMI for this grate production...
Unbelievable Deal.......2007-04-27
I was hestant about purchasing this recording due to the low price. But this is really a great buy: A six disc compillation of Maria Callas' highlights grouped by genre/composer. If you are new to opera, this is an excellent introduction to what made Callas so unique as an artist: her passion, her ability to change her timbre, the weight of her voice, her vocal colors, to suit each role. Each disc feautres a different composer or repetoire so the listener gets to hear Callas in a differnt context. Since there are about a million "best of" complillations for Callas it's a bit overwhelming and difficult to know where to start. This is definately the most complete, and the best value for your money.
Deal of the Century!.......2007-04-19
A six CD set at this price is unbelievable! If you are a beginner, start here and if you are a long time fan and have every recording under the sun like I do, it's still nice to have the CD's grouped by composer. Highly recommended!
