Album Description

This is the third in Frusciante's (Red Hot Chili Peppers) five-record series. These four songs were produced by Ian MacKaye of Fugazi and recorded in Washington, DC. It follows Frusciante's other releases, "The Will To Death" and "Automatic Writing", a collaboration with Josh Klinghoffer and Joe Lally, also of Fugazi. John has been recording one full-length album every month this year and would like to release them about that often.

4 out of 5 stars Loving it!!.......2006-08-21

It took me a while to buy this cd, the main reason: bucause it's a 15 min long cd with just 4 songs, but once i heard it, i couldn't help but loving it. It's a sweet, warm album and very well produced. I've been fan of John for quite a while and he is one of those few artist that have the hability to impress me with every single release, in this album i'm particulary impresses with his vocals, he's at his best!!
I give it 4 stars because i would have love at least one more song!! :s

Love it!!

5 out of 5 stars A little Gem.......2006-07-27

All four songs on this EP would have stood out by themselves on any of John's records. They are catchy, have great melodies, display great songwriting, and possibly the most radio friendly of all his recordings. Its a shame more songs didn't evolve in this same period but this is still a little gem anyway. I can listen to this over and over. John's voice sounds great and the songs round out to an average 4mins each. There is no experimentation on here, just guitar, bass, drums and John's vocal. The only thing missing on here is Josh Klinghoffer, but that's ok, this is all about John.
I;m sure any fan of John Frusciante has this EP already, but if you don't, definitely pick this one up. It's very similar to the 'Inside of Emptiness' LP and the final track 'Repeating' is one of his best. It will repeat on you all day...

5 out of 5 stars Another good release.......2006-03-06

Please John more good music! This is another masterpiece an it's produced by Ian Mackaye(Fugazi, former vocalist of minor threat)so that adds to it .BUY THIS!

4 out of 5 stars This is tpoh...buy this cd!!!.......2005-02-15

This 4 song EP from John Frusciante, brings with it more guts than most Ep's. Frusciante has released 6 solo disks in a matter of months, and this one does not let up whatsoever.

The 4 songs on this cd al have the strong powerful performance that is John's voice, and song writing skills.

I was hesistant at first in buying this one bexcause it only had 4 tracks, but I think it's one of Frusciante's best@!

Well Recommended!! Pick up this cd...

5 out of 5 stars The little album that could.......2005-01-04

Only four songs, I know. But they're all masterpieces in their own right! Honestly, I can't complain about any of the 4 songs on this album. I own all of Frusciante's CD's, and while this is the smallest collection of songs on an album, it is also the most thorough collection. Each one of these songs on Dc could easily have been the very best individual tracks off of 4 different regular sized albums. You dig? Basically Dc is pure gold baby. Melodious and poignant as Frusciante's songwriting gets I'd say.

It really feels like John put alot of time and thought into each one of these songs, from the guitar arrangements to the lyrical phrasing to the final recording and production (thanks in part to Fugazi's Ian McKaye).

The most moving song on this album is not Dissolve, or A Corner (which are still both genius anyway!), no no, the most poignant and almost beautifully incomprehensible song is the album's closing track, titled "Repeating". I listened to this last night on my ipods headphones in the dark of my room before falling asleep. There were moments in this song that were just so damn moving I got that out-of-body experience, or some people call it "the shivers", "goosebumps", whatever. I almost wanted to weep like a little baby the song was so beautiful (and Im not typically a weeper).

Please get this CD. I waited on buying it for about a month simply because it's only comprised of 4 songs. Dc is now my favorite album of Johns.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant music.......2003-05-04

This is a great CD of EPs that collected Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner's work from the mid 90s. It's a worthwhile collection of songs that make it an interesting collection of songs. They do need a bit of time to get used to but they are worth the money. Those that have the EPs already ( like the reviewer below ) may just skip buying this because they already have the songs. But those who don't and are willing to pay for this album will not be disappointed

3 out of 5 stars only for the diehard fans who proabably already have the EPs.......2003-02-20

Rost Pocks consists mainly of EP singles from MoM's first two releases, Vulvaland and Iaora Tahiti, and three of the four tracks from their EP Cache Coeur Naif with Laetitia Sadier from stereolab (the instrumental fourth track 'glim' is not included here).

A few of the tracks are offered up in slightly different versions and there are some EP only tracks that appear as well. Noticeably absent are EPs from Niun Niggung. I would have loved to see the inclusion of the Disk Dusk or Distroia EPs. However, as most of the tracks are from MoM's earlier more mellower EP releases, this disc comes across as very laidback and downtempo-ish. Not a bad thing.

Esssentially this a disc solely for the diehard completist MoM fans (who chances are own all these EPs already). There's nothing new here. This is MoM's second release of rehashed material in the last 12 months (Agit Itter It It from March of last year being the other release). That's not a bad thing, because this is MoM and any MoM is better than no MoM but come on Andy and Jan, it's time for you guys to put out something new . . . soon.

5 out of 5 stars The One You Want.......2004-11-27

This is the Zombies album that you want. This French label has mined the best album tracks from their early EPs, much the same as they did with The Hollies. The result is an album full of the breathless vocals of Colin Blunstone and the keyboard work of Rod Argent that you expect, and then some. Almost every track here is strong and is so much better a collection than the "Singles A&B." I play 60s music on the radio and of the 26 tracks on this CD, I have marked 23 of them to play. Songs like "I Must Move," "Whenever You're Ready." and "I Love You," shimmer with Zombie magic. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars I love this, and so should you..........2001-01-29

Although See For Miles' "Singles As and Bs" collection is much more well known than this disc (and, truth be told, probably has a better song selection) this is the better disc BY FAR. Singles As and Bs had some VERY questionable sound-quality on certain songs (She's Coming Home especially, but also She's Not There, Leave Me Be). This release contains many of the same tracks, but they sound MUCH better! Additionally, for those who are unaware, the Big Beat ZOMBIES releases haven't made this disc obselete at all; this comp is mostly stereo mixes, and even the one lone RIP song (She Loves the Way) is presented in an alternate mono mix from the Big Beat stuff. So enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Should have been called a Greatest Hits Collection.......2006-10-17

I agree with the other reviewer that said this was an odd compilation with an inappropriate and misleading title. While this is called the EP Collection Volumes 1 & 2, this is sadly not the case at all. In fact, this collection is missing quite a few songs from their actual respective ep releases and instead replaces them with common album tracks instead leaving this far from a complete ep collection at all.

I have recently compiled every single and ep from their initial Escapable EP to the Shining Road Double Single onto cd-r's and still had a little room to spare on the first disc. The following is what I compiled in complete and chronological order and what should have been released if this were to have been a real EP Collection. Songs with the asterisk are the songs that are missing from their EP Collection.

    My Compilation:
    Disc 1
    01. Inescapable
    02. Give
    03. Dada 331
    *04. Inescapable II (Inescapable EP)
    *05. Untitled (Gigantic 2 compilation)
    06. I Hope
    07. E.G. Shining
    08. Cha Cha Escueta

    15. Starblood Remix (hidden on the official release)
    *16. Fuse (Self-Non-Self CD)
    *17. Self-Non-Self (Wings Of Joy Bonus 12")

    Disc 2
    01. Adrift
*02. Everywhere (common track on Forever)
    03. Underwater
*04. The Puppet (Forever UK Bonus CD)
*05. Shine Like Stars (Forever German/UK Bonus CD)
*06. At Sea (Forever German Bonus CD)
    07. Slide (hidden on the official release)
*08. Wings Of Joy (Forever German Bonus CD)
*09. Trumpet Song (Forever German Bonus CD)
    *10. Jewel (Robert Smith Remix)(Jewel CD-Single)
*11. Leave Her To Heaven I (Jewel German CD-Single)
*12. Leave Her To Heaven II (Jewel German CD-Single)
*13. Clear (Ring Tailed Snorter Mix) (Jewel CD-Single)
*14. Cloudless (Thais Mix) (Jewel CD-Single)
    15. Shining Road
    16. Lilies
    17. September
    *18. Green Song 7 (Shining Road CD-Single)
    *19. Shining Road (Brauer Mix)(Shining Road CD-Single)
    20. Lilies (Flood Mix)
*21. Don't Close Your Eyes (Shining Road CD-Single)
*22. Organ Song (Shining Road CD-Single)

Now looking at that, you are missing 5 songs from disc 1 and a whopping 15 songs from disc 2. And thats considering that I was including album songs that were originally on the eps/singles which could have been removed to make room for more of the senseless Forever Remixes that add nothing to the songs anyways. In fact, some of the best songs like Leave Her To Heaven I & II and the awesome Robert Smith remix of Jewel were completely ignored. Granted, some of the missing songs probably should be left missing, but my aim was to have a complete ep/singles collection unlike the one offered to us. Oddly enough, there are two hidden tracks tacked on to the last song on disc 2 of the official release which contains the songs Slide and Starblood(Remix). Unfortunately you have to wade through 5 minutes of silence before you get to them. I've never understood nor cared for this "hidden" track gimmick.

All in all, this isn't a bad way to get a lot of hard to find and expensive ep/singles tracks and to also get a good best of collection of Cranes songs. Unfortunately, some of the missing songs are extremely hard/rare to find and often times very expensive if found. I just wish they would have put together something that was more in line with what they were claiming to offer.

I give this 3 stars for being a decent collection of ep/singles and common songs for the casual Cranes collector listener. But I dock it 2 stars for the inappropriate title and missing an abundance of very hard to find tracks.

4 out of 5 stars strange and beautiful band.......2005-09-24

it's very safe to say that Cranes are a unique band. the music is simple and sometimes very stark with minimal elements that add a touch of fragile beauty. their unique appeal is only strengthened by the vocals, which at times, sound like a frightened child. Cranes have created a musical landscape that borrows from the composer Satie, Cocteau Twins, and maybe even a little bit of Velvet Underground. but they have twisted all these elements into a form and shape that is all their own. a challenging listen that is worth investigation.

    5 out of 5 stars words..........2004-01-06

Out of all of the albums I have, and I am SERIOUSLY obsessed with music...I would say The Cranes' music has gotten deep into a part of me that all other pieces of music I've heard have failed to reach. I, like many others, discovered The Cranes through The Cure. The mood is similar to The Cure, but overall The Cranes are very, very different. Where The Cure are heavier, moodier and much grander in their theartical, epic depression, The Cranes are much more subtle, fragile, and achingly, hauntingly, unbearably beautiful. They're a perfect balance between Treasure by the Cocteau Twins and Disintegration by The Cure. Sad, mourning, ethereal, but calmer and more purely sad and beautiful than The Cure and less sweet than The Cocteau Twins. As another reviewer said, I also associate The Cranes with a very happy part of my life, so I guess I might be a little biased, but all I know is The Cranes are one of the only bands besides possibly Rasputina, My Bloody Valentine or Kate Bush that I never tire of. We are all searching for that totally emotionally satisfying band that speaks to us and soothes us. This might be it for me. Buy their stuff and see for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to The Cranes for newbies like me.......2003-02-12

The Cranes have an effective formula and they use it a bunch, at least in this collection of songs. Alison Shaw's helium-laced vocals float alongside brother Jim's sinister power pop. It's like Little Red Riding Hood singing along with the big bad wolf. Another comparison would be Jarboe (formerly of Swans) doing the soundtrack for a David Lynch movie. The music has a lean, edgy rhythm that leaves just enough room for the singing.

    Highlights, Disc One:
"Beach Mover" - This one sounds a lot like something Jarboe or Lydia Lunch would do.
"Inescapable" - Power pop with David Lynch/Angelo Badalamenti menace.
"Give" - Good contrast between fragile vocals and Concrete Blonde-esque rock.
"Cha Cha Escueta" - The conga drum lightens the music up a little. Has a strong 80's British "alternative" sound.
"Brighter" - An excellent goth dance track, with Spanish guitar.
"Dreamless" - This one sounds like a Cranes cover of Swans. Perfect killer-in-the-basement pop.

    Disc Two:
"September" - Soothing flanged folk guitar, though it's hard to make out the words. A great rainy-day song.
"Adoration" - More David Lynch lounge music.
"Paris and Rome (Flood Mix)" - Alternates between a 60's lounge song and "Disintegration"-era Cure.
"Lilies (Flood Mix)" - OK, enough soft stuff...POW! Sounds like Hole, with a better singer.
"Tangled Up" - Another nice acoustic guitar ballad.
"Breeze" - Sounds like every car commercial on TV right now. (NOT The Cranes' fault.)
"In The Temple" - A good one if you like Black Tape for a Blue Girl's "The Scavenger Bride." German expressionism with French words.

It's a good retrospective, though quite a few of the songs are similar in key and style. When you hear the little girl singing in the unlit basement, the music reminds you not to go down there alone.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2001-06-17

I really like the Cranes. They are masters of dreamy atmospheres and cinematic rock. This double album doesn't include all of their best tracks, like Jim's track "Stalk" from Population Four or the absolutely essential "Far Away" from Forever. EP Collection 2 is obviously the better disk, but if you're new to the band, then this is the way to start. Like many true art bands, Cranes have been through unfortunate disputes with labels that refused to release art rather than shallow entertainment. But like other bands before them, they've persevered. In fact, they just released a new album directly over the internet.

5 out of 5 stars God save the Kinks.......2005-01-08

The Kinks were one of the most criminally underrated bands in the history of rock and roll. Part of the problem in the United States was that much of the band's music focused on traditional English themes and could be seen as conservative during their greatest period, the late 60's and early 70's. Most of the rock bands of the era were promoting revolution, while the Kinks longed for a return to the village green of yore. Also, The Kinks were banned from performing live in the United States due to a dispute with the musician's union.

This collection of ten EP's put out by the band covers their most productive period of 1964-74, before Ray Davies decided to start writing music hall operas (but that's another story.) Blasting off with the quintessential garage anthem "Louie Louie" the band sets the tone for their raucous early recordings. Their most well known work follows "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night" and the ominous "Sunny Afternoon" put The Kinks at the forefront of the British invasion on both sides of the Atlantic.

Then The Kinks became more album oriented and singles became less a part of the band's overall concept. Which isn't to say that the band couldn't spin off an amazing stand alone song. "Waterloo Sunset" which is found on this collection and also as the final track on the Something Else album has competition only from R.E.M.'s "Nightswimmng" as the most beautiful pop song ever written (ahem... Todd and Matthew.) Also from the same album is "David Watts" a blasting up-tempo send up of the beautiful people in a high school setting.

For those who have most of the records from this period, there are some obscurities that can make this collection attractive, non-album tracks like "Milk Cow Blues" and "Gotta Get the First Plane Home." This is an excellent supplement to the overview records Greatest Hits and The Kink Kronikles both of which have been released on Reprise.

3 out of 5 stars For Ventures fanatics only!.......2000-06-10

This is an odd collection of Ventures tracks from the early 60s. In case you don't know, extended-play singles (EPs) were basically 7-inch, 45 rpm singles but with 4 songs instead of two. They often included a hit song of the very recent past and the rest would be filled with select songs off of the group's latest album. EPs were never really important to record-buyers in the US as in Britain and after the mid-60s the format basically disappeared. To a huge Ventures fan like myself, I was pleased that this collection of songs appeared like this. (The Beatles have a similar collection with all of their EP songs). Most of these songs are rather obscure - this is far from a greatest hits collection! Some of the songs are better than others. And the material varies too, showing you how The Ventures explored many different styles, from country (Ram-Bunk-Shush) to sci-fi (Telstar) to TV theme songs (Secret Agent Man, Man From U.N.C.L.E.). These guys are simply the masters of instrumental rock! The CD quality and packaging are very good - be sure to check out See For Miles Records' 2 LPs on 1 CD collections of other Ventures albmus available on amazon.com too! Also, if you're new to the Ventures or you just want the really well-known stuff, check out a greatest hits collection. If you're a completist and a Ventures fanatic, this is a good way to complete your collection. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Mono is not just for people deaf in one ear........2006-12-03

The simple fact is, these original British MONO mixes sound much, much better than the "primitive stereo" US releases. Back in 1962-63 Rock and Roll was new and "stereo" was even newer. People didn't have Ipods, satellite radio, or 19-channel home theater systems. We (yes, "we!") had AM radios and portable record players. Even our parents' home "Hi-Fi" was usually mono. And that's something George Martin and the Beatles had to consider when intentionally mixing their music in Mono. Let's face it, commercial "stereo" technology was in its infancy and it would take several years of growth before it sounded even close to realistic. Compared to modern recordings, many of Rock's early stereo and "simulated stereo" recordings sound unnatural with guitar/vocals hard-left in one speaker and bass/drums hard right in the other and pretty much nothing going on in the middle. Played on a modern system, these original mono mixes actually sound like a band playing right in front of you. (Especially if you turn it up! C'mon, it's the Beatles!) Instruments and vocals are bright and clear and and everything is nicely centered. I think you'd be very pleasantly surprised at the overall improvement in sound quality.

Actually, ALL of the Beatles' music was mixed in mono for release in the UK, even the later true stereo releases, but, no, the UK mono versions are not "easily found on other [US] albums." I've managed to find all the UK mono albums through "Let It Be" and have compared them to the US stereo versions and I personally prefer the UK monos. (Frankly, "Abbey Road" and the "White Album" sound just fine in stereo. I guess by '68 they were finally getting the hang of it!) If you're interested, check Google and Yahoo for "Beatles Mono" for more detailed info on the subject and for product sources.

OK, so the early UK monos sound a lot better than the early US stereos. As for the "package," well, yeah, it was definitely marketed to "Collectors." The original 12 4-song British EPs (Extended Play vinyl records) are duplicated here on CDs in cardboard sleeves that mimic the original record jackets. Also included is the original 6-song EP release of "Magical Mystery Tour" on 2 separate mono and stereo CDs in a nice fold-out that looks like the LP jacket. (The US "Magical" had songs added by Capitol to fill out an album length.) The last disc contains "rare" UK stereo versions of 4 B-sides. Then there's the the nice black storage box that looks like one I used to keep my 45s in back in my misspent youth, oh so long ago(!)

If you don't have any audiophile-wannabe tendencies and you're content with the US stereo versions that you've probably grown up with, then no, I don't suppose you need this collection. But, if you'd like at least some of your "golden oldies" to sound more natural and realistic then go for it. And as for the expense, do you really expect to pay full price for something on Amazon?

3 out of 5 stars Great for collectors, but...........2004-11-18

Overpriced. I only own this set because, twelve years ago, a local branch of a major retail chain had this mismarked with the "1" accidentally left off of the then-$150 price tag (then it became a heck of a deal!). You can pretty much get any of these songs on all of the other lower-priced Beatles CDs out there. There are, however, some great carrots for collectors in the form of the mono mixes, especially on the Magical Mystery Tour disc (which is actually presented in stereo AND mono).

While the first seven discs contain widely-available mono mixes, the final eight discs contain mono tracks unavailable anywhere else. Some of these mixes are significantly different from the stereo mixes. This is nowhere more evident on "I Am the Walrus", in which the mono mix contains a couple of extra bars in the middle of the song.

Over all, a ripoff for non-completists but almost worthwhile for obsessive collectors.

1 out of 5 stars overpriced just got a new meaning.......2004-11-14

great songs. but to be got on the original albums for a lot less than this extreme overpriced set

5 out of 5 stars Beatles fan from day one.......2003-03-20

This box set is just as delightful as it was way back in the 60's when the Beatles hit the airwaves. Even the mono songs sound excellent! Packaging is not as important as what is inside the box. These songs brought back many fond memories and I would highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars compilation of rarities & hits.......2006-12-04

Most Bobby Vee fans will probably find more enjoyment from a greatest hits cd, but this one does show off Vee's talents in a different light. On the covers, he sings with credibility on the rockers and ballads of others showing he was more than one of the teenage idols who got by just on good looks and saccharin flavored material. Plus there are a few of his own hits. All of the recordings, his hits and covers, have feeling.

Tracks 4 & 5 are with The Crickets. According to the liner notes, the only Cricket who played on the sessions was drummer Jerry Allison. The other Crickets just showed up for the photo sessions. So you want to run from this cd? Well, The Ventures all showed up on tracks 8 & 9. And it is the sound that counts and the sound is rock n roll. One song, "Don't You Believe Them", written by Vee, is from his "The New Sound" LP of 1964 which was a collection of tunes based on the British beat sound.

The recordings are excellent sound wise and except for tracks 9, 11, and 18 are stereo.

This collection may not be for everyone, but will likely be fun for all Vee fans.

3 out of 5 stars Good Voice - Good Songs!.......2005-09-21

Bobby Vee was one of many "Bobbies" in pop-music in the 1960?s. His best and best-known recordings are from 1960-62 which is the period this fine compilation covers. Vee had a very good voice, not unlike Buddy Holly`s, though not having Holly`s charm and magic.

Vee never made it real big; suffered a little from his "Mother`s favourite son-in-law" image and probably lacked the necessary originally.

Still, there are many fine recordings here. Vee is backed by the best musicians of the time; people like the Crickets and the Ventures.

Vee did not write mamy of these songs himself, but he had a skill for choosing good material that fit his style and voice well.
My personal favourites on this CD are "Take Good Care of my Baby", "Rubber Ball", "Little Star" and Vee`s own "Don`t You Believe Them"

THE "SEE FOR MILES" EP COLLECTION SERIES IS THE BEST OF ITS TYPE ANYWHERE. THE SONGS ARE BEAUTIFULLY REMASTERED AND HAS AN AMAZING CROSS-SECTION OF SONGS. BOBBY VEE'S EP COLLECTION IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE. SOME OF THE HITS ARE THERE, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, ARE THE RARITIES. I HAVE TO ADMIT, MORE THAN ONE SONG ON THIS CD I NEVER KNEW HE EVEN RECORDED.
