This new version of the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack coincides with the movie's 30th anniversary (which is also celebrated by a special edition DVD). The CD is notable for several instrumental tracks by John Williams, as well as for "Any Day Now," a previously unreleased song performed by Perchik/Paul Michael Glaser (better known for his starring role in TV's Starsky and Hutch). The soundtrack is often compared unfavorably with the original 1964 cast album, in which Zero Mostel played the part of Tevye (here performed by Topol, who had been in the 1967 London production). But this CD has a lot going for it, including glossy remastering and, of course, Isaac Stern as the fiddler. In the end, whatever version you decide to pick up, Fiddler remains one of the most enduring musicals of all time. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Topol is best as the Papa.......2007-07-15
I have other versions of CDs of "The Fiddler of the Roof" but Topol is the best and this is one of the best CDs with Topol. As far as "The Fiddler On the Roof" goes, that is a thumbs up 5 star anytime story and songs.
Love it.......2007-05-16
I had looked everywhere for this CD. I am so happy to have found the "real" Fiddler on the Roof!
CP as Grandmother Tzeitel.......2007-03-30
At first, I thought this musical was weird but then I grew to like it. It has a sad ending but the thems in the movie are really interesting. Life really is like being a fiddler on the roof. In a musical coming up at my school, I am playign the part of Grandmother Tzeitel in Tevye's dream. I am excited to play the part and I think our musical will go very well!
Never Ending Joy!.......2006-11-22
The music from Fiddler on the Roof is exciting, fun, interesting and funny! This CD is mixed with humor, music from different cultures and a wide mix of different songs. Each song is so different that I can listen to it for hours. I was surprised how enjoyable and pleasent it really is. Although...it is easy to get this music stuck in your head!
-Christian Fobian, Author of Why Christ?
Great a classic.......2005-11-08
Totally enjoyable. After a few listens you can't help but sing along.

Miracle of Miracles!.......2007-01-28
This music is to die for! I love to hear these songs and to be able to sing with the music. This CD is definitely a miricle of miracles!
Gross.......2005-04-04
I think just be looking at the cover, you can tell how rough this looks. Topal's poytrayal as Tevia dosn't help it. This is a very dark, quit version of Fiddler and the bonus tracks will scare the ever living flesh out of your kids. The early sketch for the dream was very very upsetting. Now I can't go to sleep at night because of this recording. Everything after the dream is just dissapointing and I don't blame the muscial because that is good but this is bad. The bonus tracks are just tracks you'd hear at a Halloween party. Not on an Original London cast recording. Seriously, the tracks at the end are very very scary. Do not buy.
I reccomend the American recordings. [The original Broadway and the New Broadway cast recordings].
Now I Have Everything..........2004-10-10
What is it about Fiddler on the Roof that makes it such an enduring and breathtaking masterpiece? Is it the charming and very unusual plot line coupled with the delightful music and the moving lyrics, or is it something more?...What FOTR really is is a character musical; every archetypical jewish and Russian figure is embodied in this piece. It is impossible not to love and laugh over delightful figures like Tevye, Golde, Yente, Motel...i could go on and on. It is this endearing quality that has made FOTR the timeless classic that it is...other musicals are breathtaking or touching or hilarious...this musical is all of those things and much more. While I would not go as far as to say that it is my favorite musical, I cannot deny it the credit it undoubtedly deserves. For those who have never seen it performed,I heartily reccomend the excellent film, for those who have and who want to bring the music into their homes, this is the recording for you. By all means buy the broadway recording as well but do not overlook this one which is in my opinion infinetly superior. Zero Mostel was certainly an extremely talented performer, (A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum testifies to the fact) but he does not have that utterly perfect Israeli/Yiddish flair which Topol brings to the role. Also, the extracts that i have heard from the broadway recording are slow; they do not capture the intensity of the piece as well as this one does, and several members of the cast simply cannot do justice to the songs in the way that the London cast members can. Topol's If I Were A Rich Man and his duet with Lazar Wolf(Paul Whitsun-Jones) To Life! cannot be beaten and the full company songs (Tradition, Tevye's Dream, Sunrise, Sunset amd Anatevka) are equally brilliant. The younger cast members occasionally have trouble with their songs but they still provide sweeter more vibrant moments to those on the Broadway recoding. Miracle of Miracles and Far from the Home I love are especially good. Even if i have not been able to convince you that this CD is your best option, buy one recording of the score at least; I am certain that you will not regret it.

WOW GREAT MUSIC.......2006-09-25
Styx's 3rd album THE SERPENT IS RISING and their Fourth album MAN OF MIRACLES. These would be their last albums under the Wooden Nicel label. It has Some of the really good songs on here have to be "Jonas Psalter", "The Grove Of Eglantine", "Man Of Miracles", "Southern Woman", "22 Years", "Rock & Roll Feeling", "Winner Take All", "Witch Wolf", and many, many, more. These two albums are a must have for any Styx fan out there. It may not be in stock but the used & new prices are to good to pass up. If you like music you will buy this today
A great CD.......2004-09-30
If you are a Styx fan, you must have this one. It really rocks.
It's a pitty that this disc is out of stock.
My favorite songs of this album are: Young Man, Man of Miracles, Lies,The Groove of Eglantine, Serpent is Rising and Song for Suzanne.
You gotta have this disc!
where did it go?.......2004-04-03
Dear Amazon,
This Cd is truly fantastic, but why is it out of stock. This was basically the last place on the face of the earth, to locate Serpent/miracles. Could you please try and return it to your inventory, or at least have the used ones go down in price. A song for Suzanne, christopher mr christopher, and man of miracles are worth it alone. Could you please bring it back for the many Styx fans out there.
Styx at their finest.......2003-05-14
You know, I haven't actually heard this album, but my dad has the old LP's and I love them. I must warn you, this isn't conventional Styx, there is a lot more heavy guitar, etc. My favorite songs are 'The Serpent is Rising,' 'Witch Wolf,' and 'Golden Lark,' although nearly all of the songs are great. The one gripe I have is with 'Krakatoa,' because it is just kind of dumb. I don't understand why any of the songs here don't appear on the Greatest Hits album. This is definitely Styx's best. Go out and buy it now. You won't be disappointed.
Classic gritty art rock.......2001-06-23
This review is for The Serpent is Rising. This early effort is the opposite of Styx popular stuff in several ways. The songs are very experimental but with lousy production. This shorter, hard rocking approach to art rock was a nice change of pace. Curulewski shows his esoteric side and its a shame he didn't stay with the band.

Truly A Miracle Of Music.......2006-09-11
On the verge of signig with A&M and superstardom Styx released Man Of Miracles to decent success in 1973. Truly great music not their best but anything by Styx is better than what you see on MTV these days (But then you don't see any music on MTV anyway).
My Favorite Songs have to be "Man Of Miracles", "Southern Woman", "Rock & Roll Feeling", "Christopher", and "Lies".
This is a great album to finsh up your collection with. If you are a true Styx fan you will buy this.
Serious split personality.......2006-04-30
Man of Miracles, Styx's final album with Wooden Nickel simply proves how this band simply needed a better label and a stronger musical identity. Here the band was having a hard time deciding whether to be a prog rock band or a straightforward hard rock band. James Young is perhaps the most predictable, as he tended to prefer hard rock. Dennis DeYoung went for both ballad and prog rock epics. John Curulewski was perhaps the most schizophrenic because one song he would write would be a prog rock epic, the next a straightforward boogie rocker (maybe that's the reason so many Styx fans welcomed Tommy Shaw, after all he was more consistent). But there are several good songs make this album worth getting (but Styx newcomers are obviously advised to start with their first four major label outings, Equinox, The Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight). The first two cuts, "Rock and Roll Feeling" and "Having a Ball", even from just looking at the titles, are straight-ahead rockers. Next is a Dennis DeYoung ballad, "Golden Lark", not done in the style of "Lady" or "Babe", but in prog rock fashion. DeYoung also gets to show off his new machine, an ARP String Ensemble, an keyboard that certainly served the band well during their major label days (including the synth solo on "Come Sail Away"). "A Song For Suzanne" is also from DeYoung, another prog rocker, but not in ballad form. James Young gives us "A Man Like Me", which, unsurprisingly, given the guy's hard rock background, is a straightforward hard rocker. They also give us a cover of the Knickerbockers' "Lies" (a song, in which the original had many fooled it was a new Beatles song back in the mid '60s). "Southern Woman" is by far the most effective of the rockers, almost reminds me of Kansas, but without the violin. The title track, which ends the album, is a great prog rocker, with some nice synth work. I have always felt the second half of the album was better than the first. By the way, the cover can't be beat!
Luckily by this time, things were starting to look up for Styx. Not too long after this album came out, "Lady" from Styx II (1973) started showing some nationwide chart action that got them signed to a major label with even better albums to come.
As already mentioned, Man of Miracles might not be the best place for a newcomer, it's still worth having for the established fan.
DELVING INTO THE PAST - MIRACLES HAPPEN (OR THEY USED TO).......2005-10-23
As contradictory as it may be for lovers of the old and good Rock and Roll, putting on a Styx CD may indeed shock, if not trouble, many around you, chiefly those who are fans of Black Sabbath or Kiss. Not a heavyweight like the former, always catering for Heavy Metal freaks, nor an ambitious act like the latter, responding to those ever in the mood for a visual bombardment; instead, this American group named after the eerie mythological river of death - from Dante's Inferno - was more like a music crucible in which all genres could be melted into powerful, emotional, and oftentimes bizarrely arranged tunes.
Still keeping this bizarre that had pervaded its predecessor The Serpent is Rising and already announcing the epic tone of its successor Equinox - arguably the best Styx album - Man Of Miracles is a good token of what a combination of fine melodies, heavy arrangements, and exaggerated vocals can produce. "Rock & Roll Feeling" and "Havin' a Ball," open this their fourth album, giving the impression that the band is in the mood for a rave-up, with John Curulewski and James Young's unrelenting guitars making the listener think that all the guys wanted to do in this album was to get a kick from playing sheer Rock and Roll - Got it wrong. "Golden Lark" and "Song For Suzanne," sung by Dennis De Young - whose distinct voice unmistakably came to symbolize Styx - and accompanied by his (at the time) state-of-the-art keyboards, are there to soothe all ears.
The record goes alternating pure Rock songs, "A Man Like Me," "Southern Woman," and "Lies" with exquisite, elaborated tunes, "Evil Eyes" and "Christopher, Mr. Christopher," closing with one of the heaviest Styx songs ever, the title cut "Man of Miracles," whose theatrical, soundtrack-like introduction was typical of Art Rock groups and artists, namely King Crimson, ELP, and Rick Wakeman. But only a cursory or untrained listener would put them down as progressive. True, there's some of the sophistication peculiar to Art Rock -quite popular during the first half of the 1970s - in their music, though not enough to be a peer of names like Genesis and Yes. Instead, Styx was, if not the inventor, one of the greatest contributors, along with Journey, to establish of what became known as Arena Rock (some say Pomp Rock ........ or more recently named Corporate Rock), or in other words, Rock music to be played to a selected audience, one with a taste for high production and sound quality, supportive of the Glitter Rock headed by David Bowie, Elton John and Queen, and despising the misbehavior and straightforwardness of Punk groups like Sex Pistols and Ramones.
For those wishing to experiment a morsel of the highly creative seventies, and listen to an exponent of one of the many styles current of that decade, Man of Miracles is not Styx aiming its commercial stardom - which happened with songs like 1979's "Babe" and 1980's "The Best Of Times" - but it's one of their best; a musical feast that makes us feel the last twenty five years or so, with few exceptions, have let us down in the middle of mediocrity and dullness, believing that miracles are seemingly out of date.
TH FULL FIVE!!!.......2005-02-28
Since this album isn't available new, I was overjoyed to find it on cassette for US $5.00 on a 2nd hand site. The cassette also had half of 'Serpent is rising' to fill it out. This album has a psychedelic feel to it. The songs are hard rock songs, because they are mainly James Young songs. The Dennis DeYoung songs are slower songs. I like this album because of all the colourful sounds. Dennis' keyboard work was at a high on this album. Highlights are 'Cristopher' which has a medieval feeling. There's a blistering cover of the 60's staple 'Lies', an awesome rocker called 'southern woman', a sultry ballad called 'Golden Lark', and songs like 'Rock n roll feeling' and 'having a ball' are lots of fun. There's a lot of good-time rock n roll churned out on this album. The title track is a mysterious metal track, and like all the other songs, is irresistably infectious. One of my firm favourite Styx albums.

one of the best STYX albums.......2005-06-19
a correction for the fact that James Young isn't the only original member left in the band.....Chuck Panozzo is still on bass....Chuck has been diagnosed with AIDS/HIV POS...and only tours as his health permits....
Tommy Shaw has been on board since the CRYSTAL BALL album...
Much like REO SPEEDWAGON....who only has one original member left in the keys player-Neil Doughty......but Kevin Cronin has been a long time member and bassist Bruce Hall has also been on board since 1978.
Two fantastic bands that share a common ground of losing most original lineup......both these bands did their most significant works in the early stage of their careers....the first 7 or 8 albums....before selling out and getting cheesy.
best styx album next to equinox.......2003-01-17
styx when they were still styx. May they rest in peace. Only James Young remains from this lineup and lets face it he never was the lead guy was he. A little hint on styx's first four albums wooden nickle screwed up the EQ. So if you drop the high and low ends it sounds better.
THE BEST OF THEIR WOODEN NICKEL ALBUMS.......2002-01-06
Their 1974 release, starts off with the rockin Rock and Roll Feeling and ends with the metal title track Man of Miracles. And this cd contains some very good songs, even though they never got any air play, and Lady from STYX 2 and yet to go big time.
This cd contains other rockers besides the two mentioned above, Southern Woman the 3rd sung and written by JY, shows that he could carry a STYX cd. He also sings A Man Like Me, Havin' a Ball, and shares vocals with Dennis on Lies. Having written or, co-written about half the tracks on this outting, JY made what would be his best STYX cd. He would later be reduced to one to two songs a cd, as the Tommy and Dennis pair would take over the writting chores on later cds.
Dennis made his presence know this time, on the last cd (SREPENT) he was almost un noticed. But this time he showed his style, that would later develope into his superstar writing pattern.
Here he as the songs Golden Lark, A Song for Suzanne, both good, the haunting Evil Eyes, the lackluster Christopher, Mr.Christopher.
And if you were lucky you may have the cd with the hidden track Unfinished Song, which besides Lady is his best song up to this date.
JC didn't sing on this outting, and he only co-wrote three songs. Rest of the band Chuck and John, show a growing connection in the playing together, the whole group appears to be coming together. If they could only leave out songs like Havin' a Ball, which keeps repeating itself, like they have nothing to sing about, and they are just filling up time.
Over all not a bad album. GRADE B-
