2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24

For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the First Volume.......2005-08-04

There is a great collection of music to be found here. There are many great renditions. The "2001, a Space Odyssey Fanfare" was outstanding. "Book of Days" from "Far and Away" had a very unique approach. I recommend this one deeply, oh yes I do, by far and away!

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 2.......2005-06-17

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' treatment of film scores on this second tribute to Hollywood are somewhat more pleasing than Volume I. The selections are more intriguing and demonstrate a more positive approach to film scores and their value as true musical art forms. There is quite a diverse representation of music here. The incredibly powerful main title to MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (Bronislaw Kaper) juxtaposed with the bittersweet and romantic love theme to SPARTACUS (Alex North) and the intimately tender love theme to FRIENDLY PERSUASION (Dimitri Tiomkin) are masterfully achieved. I have never been that enamored with this CD's 20-bit digital recording but it has grown on me. Still, I highly recommend and enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sheila from Savannah, Georgia.......2005-01-15

I love this cd. It is the greatest. Moonglow and Midnight Cowboy are my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A great album.......2001-01-28

Erich Kunzel, once again comes through with another terrific album of movie music. On this album you will find preludes, themes and main title music from some of Hollywood's most loved movies. Films from as early as 1936's "Modern Times", through to 1992's "Far and Away", are represented here. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra are as wonderful as ever, and the 20-bit digital sound system makes for unequalled sound quality. A pleasing highlight for me, is the wonderful "Moonglow" which starts off track 5. The jazz trio of piano, bass and drums eventually is joined by the orchestra for the theme from "Picnic". Then we have the beautiful waltz from "Around the world in eighty days". With the wonderful accordion solo, you can imagine being on a merry-go-round. This is truly a beautiful album...a must for lovers of orcestral music.

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. The concluding disc pays homage to Tiomkin the unlikely pop tunesmith, via his hit vocal themes to Rawhide, Wild is the Wind and High Noon's "Do Not Forsake Me." --Jerry McCulley

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22

This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:

Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.

Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".

Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".

The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"

Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".

The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16

This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).

5 out of 5 stars "film composer Dimitri Tiomkin gave his all and then some".......2004-07-13

Silva America presents the ultimate in film music during the illustrious career of an icon and legendary composer of film scores ~ "Alamo:Dimitri Tiomkin Essential Film Collection/O.S.T", featuring some long forgotten 53 cues that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.

Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.

Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.

On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.

The last and final disc four ~ The Tiomkin Vocal Songbook featuring "This Then is Texas" (Giant), "Rawhide" (Rawhide), "Do Not Forsake Me" (High Noon), "Follow the River" (Night Passage), "The Ballad of Jett Rink" (Giant), "Thee I Love" (Friendly Percuasion), "It's A Wonderful Life", "Wild Is The Wind", "The High and the Mighty", The Ballad of the War Wagon" (The War Wagon), "Rio Bravo", "Strange are the Ways of Love" (The Young Land), "The Ballad of Jim West" (The Wild Wild West), "The Wild Wild West" (The Wild Wild West) ~ many were hit makers of the day and in the top ten.

Outstanding performances by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Nic Raine, Paul Bateman, Mario Klemens - are the conductors), Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple - choir master), featuring vocals by Jason Howard and Keith Ferreira ~ hats off to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Olilvia Tiomkin Douglas, John Waxman, Rick Clark and Gareth Williams (associate producers) ~ all film producers and directors welcomed the legendary composer with open arms for their forthcoming projects ~ the "film-score-buff" collectors are ecstatic about this four disc release on the essential film music collection of DIMITRI TIOMKIN, the arrangements and performances are top notch inclusive of HDCD/Dolby Surround.

When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!

What I want when I buy a CD of whale song is simply that: whale song. I don't want other music (of which this does happen to be devoid), but I also don't want surf sounds or other above water animals (or other below water animals for that matter). I have tried many times to enjoy this disc but the surf sounds (which begin even before the first hoot from a whale) ruin it. I usually don't last more than a few seconds (though I have forced myself to listen all the way through a few times). Save yourself. Look for a recording that has ONLY whale sounds.

This is an erie recording of what you might hear if your way out at the sea at night. This recording is haunting but soothing. The humpback whales have a moaning sound that can be heard over the ocean.Imagine laying on the beach at night listening to the waves then you hear the sound of these whales. This is very entertaining to listen to and is just nature sounds no music.

This score is one of Dimitri Tiomkin's most poignant and a good example of his understanding of the 19th century American idiom. This is a classic recording all around. The original LP album on vinyl contained an annoying induction hum. This digitally re-mastered CD has miraculously eliminated it without compromising the original recording. It sounds magnificent. Tiomkin's music well represents the love and devotion and the internal struggle of Gary Cooper and his Quaker family to remain neutral during the Civil War as Confederates soldiers bring the struggle to their community. This highly emotional soundtrack is one of Tiomkin's better scores and is recommended.

      2 out of 5 stars It's...unique..........2003-07-12

I bought this CD a few months ago. It's okay... mostly. Just as your sitting down to relax and listen to the sounds of the rainforest, you're sent five feet in the air thanks to a horrific yell from some kind of monkey or something. When you think it's finished, the monkey starts again. It seems to yell forever. When it's FINALLY finished, all of the good rainforest noises are over, and you're stuck listening to some rain or a creek or something.

This CD is awfull. I now know why there's no picture of it!

I give this two stars because it's not so bad if you ignore the monkey, and I had fun watching my cat DESTROY it!

1 out of 5 stars Save your five bucks........2002-04-20

I figured I'd try this CD out -- after all, it's inexpensive. Unfortunately, it is bad.

The CD has only one track that is just over 58min long. The first 5 minutes (maybe more) is occasionally punctuated by some horrific creature that screams like a crying baby. Startling is an understatement.

The rest of the CD is low quality recording of a babbling brook which occasionally fades to one channel (as if you were turning away from the brook) only to suddenly jump back to equal volume in both left and right channels.

The final conclusion: avoid this CD like the plague.

      Album Description

Dream Theater stunned the world of music with the release of their 1991 gold record release, Images and Words and have since gone on to sell millions of CDs worldwide and are now recognized as one of the greatest progressive rock acts of all-time. One of the most vital components of Dream Theater's trademark sound is undoubtedly the incredible vocal force of James LaBrie. Blessed with unrivaled power and an almost inhuman vocal range, LaBrie lets himself stretch out far beyond the boundaries of Dream Theater. And hey, isn't that what a solo album is really for?

On Elements of Persuasion James surrounds himself once again with world-class musicians and describes the sound on E.O.P. as effectively traversing the distance between the moody and atmospheric and heavy and experimental. New sounds and recording techniques are in abundance.

Engineered by Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Seal, Pink, Mick Jagger), Elements of Persuasion adds new facets to James LaBrie's already sparkling career.

Look for James LaBrie to tour in the U.S. in April 2005

5 out of 5 stars A great break from Dream Theater.......2007-06-22

Being that James LaBrie is the lead singer for one of today's premier progressive metal bands, Dream Theater, comparisons to that band are inevitable. I'm a big DT fan, so if anything I write from hear on out sounds like a DT putdown, it isn't meant that way.
Having said that, I can say this: Want to know what this album is? Basically, take all the fantastic, heavy guitar riffing from DT and concentrate on that. Minimize the progressive tripping but still make the songs long enough that they leave you feeling fulfilled. No 3 1/2 minutes-and-I'm-gone stuff here.
I'm a hit-or-miss prog-metal fan, so for me this album is simply fantastic. So often when listening to DT, out slams this wonderful, chunky, deep guitar riff and I'm jammin' along. Then, 8 seconds later, it's completely abandoned as they go off on some tangent. That's the nature of prog-metal and not a criticism of DT (remember my first paragraph above), but not always what I want. Much of the time I WANT THAT RIFF. James serves them up, song after song, with a truly talented guitarist and backing band.
That's not to say the songs are one-dimensional, either. There's variety here, and he tries a few things you might not expect (turntable scratching on a metal song? Whod've thunk it? *chuckle*). I've read criticisms of his voice, but I don't know what planet those people live on. James has a great voice and uses it well throughout this album.
This is metal how it should be done, in my humble opinion. Heavy but not annoyingly fast, great drums that don't overwhelm, an excellent groove and great singing. And solos, for crying out loud! Nu-metal fans probably won't know what they're hearing. Hey guys, guess what those skinnier strings on the guitar are for!
Oops, got a little silly there, sorry. I just love this album. The songs are distinct and fresh. The vocals are excellent. The lyrics aren't about breasts, beer and partying 'till you drop. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for Dream Theater Fans.......2007-01-03

This man can sing!!! It's a nice change of musical styles from LaBrie's Dream Theater gig, but still, his vocal prowess shines through on all the cuts. Well worth the listen

2 out of 5 stars Its like Dream Theater, but Less Good.......2006-07-20

Theres a funny story that goes with this. My friend said he downloaded Octavarium and it sucked. Since Octavarium is great I went to find out what had happened. Turns out he downloaded this album. The guitar player does a good Petrucci, but hes not Petrucci. The keyboard is cheesey and doesn't come close to Jordan Rudess. And overall the songs are a lot less progressive than DT and don't have the virtuosity element. There are some good guitar solos but thats about everything technical. I'd give it a 2.5. LaBrie does a great job on this albums vocals so if your a fan of his singing by all means buy it. If your looking for more Dream Theater, stay away.

5 out of 5 stars To Be Succinct.......2006-07-03

I haven't got much time these days, but I wish to share my thoughts on a few excellent albums recently.

James Labrie's 2005 effort brings to mind alot of old progressive metal. This is along the melodic lines of Images and Words progressive music rather than the more complex Six Degrees, streamlined Octavarium, and heavier Train of Thought. Another reasonable comparison would be the Mullmuzzler efforts, another project also fronted by Labrie. In fact, I think that some of the Mullmuzzler crew are also featured on this "solo" record. Don't be fooled, this is not a James LaBrie solo concerto, it is merely that the movements and musical direction are led by him.

Who is it recommended for? As a Dream Theater fan, most rabid about their I&W and Six Degrees albums, I'd say this is a very strong effort by LaBrie. The opener is a heavy metal song along the lines of classic 80s metal, and the rest is extremely melodic. Recommended most for DT fans of "Images & Words" and "Six Degrees", but all DT fans should find a great, great deal to appreciate on this latest effort from the DT frontman.

      4 out of 5 stars Excelente comienzo.......2006-05-23

This is a very good collection of Montovani film music. These recording are so soothing and pleasing to the ear. Most impressive are Montovani's versions of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is incredibly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Movies and Mantovani Make Magnificent Musical Memories. .......2005-04-18

In this year in which fans celebrate Mantovani's 100th birthday, another excellent British compilation of some of the great maestro's original recordings has been released. The tracks on this CD come predominantly from Mantovani's 1957 bestselling LP, Film Encores, his 1959 Film Encores Volume 2, and his 1967 LP entitled "Mantovani/Hollywood." Up until now, the six tracks from the Hollywood LP have been the most difficult to find on CD in locations other than Japan, and it includes Monty's exciting arrangements of the themes from Zorba the Greek, the Magnficent Seven, Lawrence of Arabia, and You Only Live Twice. While these alone are worth the CD price, the remaining selections comprise the very best of Mantovani's film music library, including Unchained Melody (now better known as the theme from the movie "Ghost"), April Love, the theme from The Apartment, and Charlie Chaplin's Limelight. Attentive Mantovani fans will hear the inclusion of a less heard variation of the "golden hit" Moon River in which the maestro replaced the trumpet solo with the soprano sax in a later recording of this forever popular number. Sooner or later, and we hope sooner, everything recorded by the original orchestra led by the incomparable Mantovani will appear on CD. That is a just and fitting tribute to the most popular light orchestra leader in the 20th Century whose music will live on and will be heard to delight fans all over the world in the 21st.
