Released in 1966 to tepid sales (and hence causing no small amount of grumbling among the notoriously fractious band members), Brian Wilson's Rubber Soul-inspired album of "spiritual love" eventually became one of pop music's most celebrated artistic accomplishments. Paul McCartney would later claim that Pet Sounds in turn inspired the Beatles' magnum opus, Sgt. Pepper. This four-disc box set offers an unprecedented deconstruction of Wilson's masterpiece, taking fans, armchair scholars, and musicians on a compelling creative journey. Leading off with what once was heresy--a complete true-stereo mix of the album cleverly conjured from the existing session tapes by engineer and project coproducer Mark Linett--the set proceeds through edited audio collages that document the evolution of each song's backing track. Along the way, listeners are treated to a playful, unreleased gem ("Trombone Dixie") and the very genesis of Wilson's other great period masterpiece, "Good Vibrations." Conversely, disc 2 presents all the songs' glorious harmonies, sans instrumental backing tracks, then 19 more tracks that highlight alternate working versions (including the original take on "I Know There's an Answer," the pointedly titled "Hang On to Your Ego"), session snippets, and radio promotional spots. Disc 3 contains a newly remastered version of the album's original mono mix. The album's two comprehensive booklets were written and edited by coproducer and veteran Beach Boy biographer David Leaf and include commentary by Wilson and quotes from McCartney and producer George Martin. The 126-page "Making of Pet Sounds" pieces together the recollections of the band, session men, and engineers behind the epochal album into a warm, human-scaled history. --Jerry McCulley --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars GOD WAS SMILING ON BRIAN WILSON DURING THE PET SOUNDS SESSIONS....PET SOUNDS IS THE TCHIAKOVSKY OF ROCK MUSIC........... .......2007-01-21

An amazing journey into the creation of a musical masterpiece. Pet Sounds Sessions might be overkill to the casual Beach Boys or rock fan but it should be listened to by all music lovers. Pet Sounds Sessions lets you hear the construction of each of the Pet Sounds songs. All thirteen Pet Sounds songs are extensively examined and disected. The Beach Boys talk during the recording demos is a fantastic trip into the construction and start of the psychedelic 1960s. You hear the genius of Brian Wilson verbally and the harmonies of his fellow Beach Boys as well as the professionalism of record producer and writer Phil Spectors wrecking crew. Brian needed this wrecking crew (musicians) to make his vision and sound come out properly on Pet Sounds. I dont believe Brian really knew what the finished result of Pet Sounds would be during these recording sessions. That is how far ahead Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys were vocally and musically with Pet Sounds over any rock band of the time, yes including The Beatles. There are two booklets with this Sessions box set discussing in depth the Pet Sounds recording sessions. Disc one tracks 1-13 are the stereo mix of the complete Pet Sounds. The vocal sessions on disc three are an incredible listen and sound like a chorus of heavenly angels and will have you singing along with the included song lyrics. On the fourth cd you get to hear Pet Sounds as it was originally presented in 1966 with a new remastered 1996 mono mix). Here is how to listen to Pet Sounds Sessions: Start on cd-1 with track 14 (SLOOP JOHN B highlights) and listen all the way through to disc four to the Pet Sounds Mono Mix. After you listen to the this new mono mix you realize the greatness of Pet Sounds and how far ahead of its time it was and still is. The Beatles were so amazed and blown away with Pet Sounds and "Good Vibrations" that they tried to emulate the Pet Sounds sound in their 1966-1969 recordings. The Beatles 1966 Revolver' through their final recording 1969s "Abbey Road" were rock masterpieces but could never match the sound and creativity of "Pet Sounds" or Good Vibrations". "Pet Sounds" and "Good Vibrations" served as a blueprint for all Beatle recordings through 1966-1969. Beatles producer Sir George Martin has stated "if I had to pick one living musical genius it would be Brian Wilson". Sir George Martin has also stated that Sgt. Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds. Attempt??????? this came from Sir George Martin the producer of the worlds greatest musical band. Pet Sounds is definitly the Tchiakovsky of rock music...........

5 out of 5 stars Pet Sounds Is A Masterpiece, Brian Wilson Is A Genius.......2007-01-19

In 1965-66, I sang in my high school's "Select Choir." I've also sung in various quartets and played lead, rhythm, and bass guitar, and harmonica. So I know about music and harmony.

I always knew The Beach Boys were top notch vocalists. But when I listened to them on just the VOCAL tracks of this Pet Sounds box set, even I wasn't prepared for it...it blew me away! The instrumental tracks are also very beautiful and inspiring. If you get this box set, you should listen to the vocal and instrumental tracks SEPARATELY in a quiet place with no distractions or interruptions. And, of course, listen to the vocal & instrumental tracts TOGETHER (as the released version). You need to listen to them in the setting described above to be able to really (and fully) appreciate this musical masterpiece.

The only thing that could top this Pet Sounds box set is... if VIDEO had been taken of the guys singing their vocal parts along with the sound being recorded, too. To have such a video/audio DVD made available to the public would be absolutely AWESOME!

Paul McCartney was once asked by a Japanese radio station what his ten favorite songs were. At the top of his list was "God Only Knows." But I believe the words of George Martin, the PRODUCER of The Beatles, carry even greater weight. He said: "If there is one person that I have to select as a living genius of pop music, I would choose Brian Wilson...[Sargent] Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds." Notice that Martin used the word, "attempt." Think about it: this man was the producer of the records of the group that many still believe is "the world's greatest group"... yet, he says he would choose BRIAN WILSON if he had to name just "one" person as a "living genius of pop music."

Pet Sounds is a masterpiece, Brian Wilson is a genius...period.

4 out of 5 stars Inside Brian Wilson's Head circa '65-'66.......2007-01-10

I thought 4 CDs of Pet Sounds and its outtakes would be too much. I mean, I agree that Pet Sounds is a colossal album, a triumph of all times, but 4 CDs? Yes. It is worth it. If you're a big fan of the album itself, you'll enjoy hearing it dissected, hearing all the different parts and how they were put together. Then... You listen to the stereo mix of the final album (not released at the time) and you realize that the hype is warranted. Pet Sounds is THAT good.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven might sound like this............2005-09-24

Whether you are a die-hard Beach Boys fan, or just a fan of good music, this box-set belongs in your collection. The impact, although delayed somewhat in 1966, of "Pet Sounds" has been well documented over the years. And the recent reissue of the album makes clear that this music is coming from a special place. What the box-set does, is allows you to hear the process of the album's creation. Through alternate takes, and the "pieces" that Brian Wilson assembled into complete songs, you can hear how songs that are now classics were born. The box contains four discs...the first being a Brian Wilson supervised and approved stereo mix...the first ever, and "Sessions Part I. Disc two contains the pieces, backing tracks, Brian's instructions to the studio musician's (who are some of the best players on the planet..then and now) titled "Sessions Part 2. Disc three is perhaps the most moving for it contains just the vocal tracks of the album's songs, along with alternate versions of songs like "God Only Knows", and "Wouldn't It Be Nice". The box set also contains, in a separate slip cover replicating the original album sleeve, the original album...in mono of course.

Yes, it does help to have a strong curiosity about music and how songs are developed to get the most from this set...(disc two), but from the stereo mix, to the vocal tracks, to the alt. versions..this must be what Heaven might sound like.

5 out of 5 stars Hear the Beach Boys in action recording Pet Sounds!.......2005-07-28

To date, since the release of the album in 1966,The Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS is their biggest-selling non-compilation(BEST OF THE BEACH BOYS is the group's biggest-selling compilation). In this lavishly packaged box set, their fans will hear the group in action recording PS. You'll hear a dog barking next to other animal noises. Even Mike Love and the late Carl Wilson present broadcasts on various radio stations in America. You'll hear engineers manning the control panels and soundboards and speaking. You'll hear some broken takes,a cappella(voices only) versions of the songs and music alone. And finally, the master versions(those on the original album). CAROLINE NO was raised one key in the master version. The other versions sound like the live recording from THE BEACH BOYS IN CONCERT,released in 1973. PS hits include WOULDN'T IT BE NICE,GOD ONLY KNOWS and SLOOP JOHN B. I also like YOU STILL BELIEVE IN ME. In 2002,Brian Wilson did a series of concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall, performing all the PS songs by himself with a back-up band,of course(none of which were the surviving Beach Boys). Brian put out an album of those concerts. I dedicate this item to the memories of Carl and his' and Brian's brother Dennis.

Product Description

A few years ago, a massive CD box set of backing tracks and partial mixes from The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds recording sessions was issued. That's what much of Hey Friends sounds like. In fact, in the topsy-turvy alternate world of Kelpie it's possible that the boys abducted Brian Wilson, provided him with a sandbox filled with hallucinogens, and recorded the resulting jam session. It's liquid sunshine filtered through acid-tinged glasses. And while he's not credited on the disc, Sgt. Pepper must have pieced together the ambitious harmonies, delirious lyrics, funhouse piano, and odd drum patterns while blindfolded.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars not honest.......2006-02-24

I do not enjoy this cd. I find it flat and boring. This cd is not an honest attempt on the part of the writer to give homage to his influences (The Beatles) or to incorporate his influences (The Beatles) into his own voice. This is not the writer's own voice. This is John Lennon's voice; this is Paul McCartney's voice. It's unfortunate. The cd is boring because the songs are beyond derivative. You can listen to each song and hear the Beatle's song it came from. The writer is obviously technically talented and has a good ear for texture; however, he is hiding his expression behind this form. I would very much like to hear this band again in a few years to see if the writer has become more vulnerable and honest. It is very scary to show yourself through your music, but unless you do your work is boring.
