4 out of 5 stars Nothing from "Village Green" or "Arthur".......2000-11-20

Before Castle Communications began its excellent rerelease campaign in 1998 to restore each of the Kinks' first eight studio albums (plus their Live at Kelvin Hall and the sountrack to "Percy"), they released this generous 3-disc set in 1995. I eagerly purchased this set because at the time a number of these songs were not available on CD.

Now that I own the each of the individual albums (complete with bonus tracks), this set has become expendable. But if you don't own any of the Kinks' albums from their 1964 debut "Kinks" to their final 1970 Reprise album "Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround," here's what you get:

Kinks (1964): Twenty-four songs, including the hits "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night." In fact, you get all but two songs from the Castle reissue of this album (an alternate take of "Too Much Monkey Business" and the previously unreleased "I Don't Need You Any More").

Kinda Kinks (1965): Sixteen songs, including the hits "Tired of Waiting for You," "Set Me Free," "Who'll Be the Next in Line" and "A Well Respected Man."

The Kink Kontroversy (1965): Eight songs, including the hit "Dedicated Follower of Fashion."

Face to Face (1966): Four songs, including the hit "Sunny Afternoon."

Live at Kelvin Hall (1967): Two songs, "You Really Got Me" and "Till the End of the Day." Not many rock bands released live albums in the Sixties, though these tracks are mostly of interest for their historical value.

Something Else (1967): Three songs, including Dave Davies' "Death of a Clown" (which reached No. 3 in the U.K.) and perhaps Ray Davies' best song ever, the poignant "Waterloo Sunset."

The Village Green Preservation Society (1968): This album was overlooked on this compilation. That's a shame, because songs like "Do You Remember Walter," "Picture Book," "Big Sky" and the title track are among Ray's best songs.

Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire (1969): This album, too, is not represented. [But like Village Green, these are two of their strongest albums of the Sixties and should be bought in their entirety, along with Something Else.]

Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround (1970): Only the huge hit "Lola" (No. 9) and "Apeman" (No. 45).

Fully two-thirds of these songs are from 1964 and 1965. So you're not getting the thorough 1964-to-1970 overview that a quick glance at the track listing might suggest. However, if you're looking for the big hits along with some key album tracks this is a serviceable collection. It includes a sixteen-page booklet with nice pictures and history of the band. RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars If you're not going to buy all the albums, this is IT!.......2000-03-07

Ah, the Kinks. Everyone remembers those great chunks of noise that hit the airwaves in late '64 and '65 - You Really Got Me, All the Day and All of the Night, etc., but they never had the huge impact in America they deserved. This collection will show you why that's such a shame.

This collection takes you from those initial slabs of pre-metal metal through the great-but-subtle mid-period singles, to the triumphant "comeback" of the Kinks in America with Lola. Missing one or two really strong songs (see previous review), this is still the only commprehensive collection of Klassic '60s Kinks! A bargain!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the Kinks collections.......1999-12-30

If you're looking for one Kinks compilation to fulfill your basic British Invasion-era Kinks needs, this is absolutely the one to own. It's missing "Sitting on my Sofa" and "Nothing Can Stop Me From Worrying About That Girl" but that's forgivable, because this collection shows why the Kinks, for about 2 years, were better than the Beatles, Stones and just about everybody else in the mid-60s. Highlights: Dave singing "Long Tall Shorty," their cover of "Long Tall Sally," the amazing instrumental "Revenge," and pre-punk classics "I Gotta Move" and "I Need You." I've listened to this collection more than any of the dozens of CDs I've purchased in the past five years.

5 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane.......1998-04-25

If you were lucky enough to have had the experience of hearing "You Really Got Me" burst out of an old mono radio in 1964, then you'll love this CD. If you're too young to have had that unforgetable memory, well, here's your second chance! This 3 volume set is The Kinks at their earliest, rawest, best.
