Amazon.com essential recording
The Who Sell Out's pirate-radio concept goes south in the album's second half--the Who ran out of time before they could write enough faux commercials--but it still remains in many ways their best and most entertaining album. Pete Townshend and John Entwistle supply song after great song, and along with Keith Moon play them with power and focus. The classic single "I Can See for Miles" is matched on at least a handful of tracks, including the opening psychedelic-pop blast of "Armenia City in the Sky" (written by Townshend pal Speedy Keen), the hilarious social-interaction tales "Odorono" and "Tattoo," and the majestic mini-opus "Rael." This remaster's bonus tracks are occasionally too much of a good thing, but the Tommy rough draft "Glow Girl" is brilliant. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
The Who would never be this much FUN again.......2007-07-04
Review after review has said it, and I agree that this is a wonderful, unique album. It's the first "old" rock album I "discovered" free of peer influence, and (along with "A Quick One"), I couldn't get away from it. And this album continues to intrigue and amuse me to this day.
The songs are a diverse, interesting, and fun lot, to say the least: "Tattoo" has in recent times become more relevant than ever ... "Our Love Was" is as good as power pop gets, with an absolutely stunning studio performance that steamrolls it along. Moonie was definitely at the top of his game, and his multi-tracked drums are composed, arranged, and recorded phenomenally well on tunes like "Rael" and "I Can See for Miles". And I love those lyrics and ultra-cheesy jingles ... nobody else has ever done stuff quite like this.
As for the bonus tracks, they just go to show that in 1967 The Who was leaving better stuff in the can than most bands were putting out. "Hall of the Mountain King" is the best rock-n-roll thrashing up of a classical piece I've ever heard, hands down.
If you enjoy classy British rock and power pop that REALLY has some power ... and the occasional moment of shimmering beauty ... The Who Sell Out will have you grinning from ear to ear.
This is the Who I love.......2007-04-18
To me this is the Who at the height of their powers and my second favorite album by them, falling only behind the "Meaty, Beaty Big and Bouncy" compilation. There's not much to say about the music that hasn't been said before. Everything's ferocious, the lyrics are wonderful and even the "commercials" are fun. What's more this re-issue also comes with a bounty of interesting bonus tracks. It would have been nicer if the bonus material was put on a second disc to preserve the album in it's original form, but that's splitting hairs. Highly recommended.
Armenia Rules the Sky Since 1979.......2007-03-19
I first took to the Who listening to my Mother's records when I was 7. I didnt get a thing of what they were singing, except I liked the sound. Until I bought Who's Next in 81 this was my album, a 2 year reign(I stole it from my mom's record shelf). I bought this CD for my enjoyment during this 16 month tour in Iraq, as I wind down the final few months I am taking off to Armenia.
The Who's Big Bang.......2007-02-01
Everything we take for granted in the Whonivese - Townshend's arty lyrics and approach set to crushing rock 'n' roll, is found here. This album is essentially a transitional effort from the Mod days to the rock days. In the spirit of it being transitional, it's not perfect: Silas Stingy (one of Entwistle's worst), Armenia City in the Sky; Sunrise and Rael (only worth noting because its instrumental break was the basis for the Sparks riff from Tommy.
On the other hand, this is a lot of fun, and simply one of the Who's best. An ode to pirate radio, it's stuffed with mock-commercial jingles, all of which are a riot. More importantly, it contains some of the Who's key songs: I Can See For Miles was probably the heaviest song ever made at the time, and still packs a punch now. Marianne with the Shaky Hand returns the [..]theme from Pictures of Lily, this time with an easygoing (dare I say mellow?) folk-pop melody and such. Tattoo is one of the group's funniest, a song about coming of age told in a lighthearted way. Our Love Was is one of their best pop songs, and there's also the quasi-spiritual I Can't Reach You.
I'm Sold!.......2007-01-29
A great concept album and Pete is back with a plethora of good songs, many are among his best. The bonus tracks are superb here also. A real treat for the fans. Casual fans should stay away and get Who's Next instead.

No one would have seen this coming, but it's as natural as loving a great album can be. Petra Haden renders the classic album, The Who Sell Out, in its entirety -- fake commercials and all -- and she does it a capella. She has a voice and sensibilities to make this work as she performs both the lyrics and components from the Who's instrumental tracks. It is the latter which is particularly affecting, her choices addressing how many fans of the original album would also identify a song's key characteristics. Townshend's guitar parts in particular are sung with virtuosity and unmistakable glee. Far from being a mere stunt, this set works on its own as well as giving one pause, reconsidering the original work in a new light. --David Greenberger
Album Description
One of the triplet daughters of legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden, Petra grew up in a world of music. At a young age, she developed a remarkable talent to perfectly mimick the sounds of instruments she was hearing around the house from Captain Kagaroo to the Cocteau Twins. She developed complex arrangements in her head and could interpret all sorts of songs. Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out is the latest chapter in the always provocative, often unpredictable yet never less than fascinating musical career of Ms. Haden. The impetus for the project came from her friend, bassist mike watt, who suggested that she attempt to re-imagine this classic Who album as an a capella tour de force (this at least a year before any news of Bjork's Medulla leaked to the press). He gave her an 8 track cassette tape with the original Who album recorded onto one track and the other seven empty, for her to fill with intricate vocal harmonies reinventing not only all The Who's singing and instrumental parts - including drums - she also recorded all the mock radio commercials so integral to The Who Sell Out experience. The final result is a technical tour de force that highlights The Who's own achievement, bringing all the elements of chorale music, vaudevillian schmaltz and Renaissance chamber ensemble playing powerfully to the fore.

not so hot........2006-08-17
this is just another chick with no original songs of her own trying to ride on the coatails of a great band. a few songs were ok sounding but in all it's a weak attempt at a classic who lp. it also figures that this is the daughter of a famous composer. these people usually are related to someone in the biz who can easily get them studio time instead of a true talented unknown who will never get opportunities like this.
Petra Haden sings Who Sell Out.......2006-08-15
Sell Out is my favourite album by The Who so it was fascinating to hear an acapella version . This is truly brilliant. Hats off to Petra!
Nice Tribute to a Classic Album.......2006-03-16
Sell Out was one of the first Who albums I got 25 years ago and have loved it since. It's still my favorite of the lot. I read about this album on Pete Townshend's site and decided to give it a try. The samples here don't do most of the tracks justice and this sounds like a very well-studied tribute to the original Sell Out. In fact, I found myself filling in the parts that were missing while I was listening to it in the car. Which brings up a point... Yes, there are some parts that were dropped (like the final "Heinz Baked Beans" tag on that track and the subdued intro for "I Can See For Miles"), but I supposed when you record 9 or 10 vocal tracks yourself, it's hard to remember everything.
I can see how some of the fans of mainstream a capella music would be disappointed. I would imagine that this would appeal more to fans of Todd Rundgren's "A Capella" album than to fans of Take 6 or any of those groups. Luckily, I fit into the former category.
Wonderful rendition of the Who.......2006-02-17
Excellent A Capella version of the old favorites. Petra's voice brings a new verve to both the dated and the old favorites.
Her "percussion" backing is effective, although not up to the standards of "The Wise Guys", "Die Prinzen" or "Les Swingle Singers". But these groups have years of experience at being human percussion.
Initially Speechless.......2005-11-17
Received a taped copy across a bar from a friend in an unmarked brown envelope saying "You'll understand". Played it and
yes I do! As a Who fan and fan of the unusual this is FANTASTIC, even forked out for my own copy !........ enjoy !

Product Description
This CD contains an entire performance of the musical hit, GUYS ON ICE, as performed in Door County, Wisconsin in the fall of 1999. At that time, the show was a one-act. (It was expanded into two acts in 2000.) The recording features the late playwright Fred Alley as Lloyd, Doug Mancheski as Marvin, and James Valcq playing the piano and appearing as Ernie the Moocher. Alley and Valcq created the musical of THE SPITFIRE GRILL.
Customer Reviews:
Fun, offbeat show.......2007-01-14
An ice fishing musical? A show about two guys in a hut on the ice? The best Wisconsin musical ever? Surprise, both the show and songs are pretty good.
Sure it's a little cornball with terse men (in the Lake Wobegon tradition) and lots of ice fishing jokes, but it's also clever, fresh, with fun, listenable songs, many of which have a depth and sweetness as unexpected parallels are drawn between ice fishing and life. The CD is not just the songs, it's (most of) the show. It was recorded during a performance so you hear the audience laughing at the jokes making it more fun. Recommended.
Minor quibble -- the CD description and liner notes claim it is the whole show, but I recently saw the show at a local theater in its New England premier and the beginning of the second act (circa 2007) is missing from the CD.

Their Best Pre-"Tommy" LP, And A Concept Classic!.......1998-10-20
The Who sell out on several levels in this album (one of the best concept albums ever!): (1)-They obviously sell out by having the LP sound like a Radio London broadcast, complete with wacky late 1960s AM style commercials & public service announcements. (2)-They sell out in an unexpected way, by not following through on the concept all the way to the end of the album!! (That was due to the fact that The Who were on tour during the making of the LP, and, with the release date looming, just plain ran out of time). But the LP works regardless, and this CD version contains many extra tracks & radio spots not included on the original 1968 analog release. Classic tracks include: "I Can See For Miles", "Odorono", "Our Love Was, Is", "I Can't Reach You", and "Tattoo". My only complaint is that they didn't include the 2 real-life radio spots the Who did back in the late '60s: "Little Billy" (for the American Cancer Society), and "Do You Want Kids, Kids?" (for Planned Parenthood). Both these tracks would have worked wonderfully within the "Sell Out" concept. But still, it's my favorite Who album of all... even above "Who's Next" (a close second). Extremely funny and entertaining, this LP is a must for all Who fans. It lampoons late '60s pop-AM radio, and embraces it at the same time. Don't miss this one.

The Definitive Version?.......1999-12-27
For those fans looking for the recent Japanese releases with the miniture cardcoard LP sleeves, this is the second in the series: Polydor POCP-9195. Not only one of the finest Who LP's with the stunning I Can See For Miles, this release features a copy of the "Psychedelic Poster" given away with the original UK LP release. With an eye for detail, Japan Polydor even included a small detachable sticker on the cover. The music is a must for all Who fans, the Japanese packaging a delight. Be forewarned, this version uses the 1995 re-master, so the guitar on I Can See For Miles doesn't drift from speaker to speaker as on the original stereo LP. A minor quibble for a great effort to make one of the true classic 60's LP's sound fresh and alive.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2004-04-13
Track Listing: Armenia City In The Sky/Heinz Baked Beans, Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand, Odorono, Tattoo, Our Love Was, Is, I Can See For Miles, I Can't Reach You, Medac, Relax, Silas Stingy, Sunrise, Rael
This is a hard one to find. When I found it, I immediatly purchased it. It's unavailable new and I purchased it used for $8.99 and it was worth getting it used. The songs are great and it's a great one to have. (Just so you knows when you purchase this, the release number is MCAD-31332). Some higlights of this CD are 'I Can See For Miles', 'Our Love Was, Is', 'I Can't Reach You', and 'Rael'. 'Rael' was the second 'mini opera' by Pete (After 'A Quick One, While He's Away') which features a familiar guitar part towards the end (The part is almost exactly the same as those in 'Sparks' and 'Underture').
So In conclusion, I rate this a five because the songs are excellent and it's a great one to get when you have the chance.
