5 out of 5 stars Welcome to "alternative" classical music!.......2007-02-19

It's wonderful to hear three such talented musicians put together a collection of non-classical music on revered instruments. This is not "The Yo-yo Ma Show" with two other guys! The music is varied but the performances are great and -- in some cases, e.g. Appalachia Waltz -- fantastic. I was driving the first time I heard the title piece and immediately started sobbing and had to pull over; it was that beautiful! This would be a good CD choice for children to listen to, as it gives a fine exposure to the amazing sounds that the three instruments can make when in the right hands.

5 out of 5 stars It's Yo-Yo so it's Exquisite.......2007-02-12

Yo-yo Ma has never been content to stick with the standard cello classics. Of course he has recorded the classics - the magnificent Bach Cello Suites (incredible and the visual DVD only enhances the effect), Vivaldi, Beethoven, Faure, Dvorak, etc. His evolution as an artist is an on-going process, thus there's Yo-Yo playing Tango (Astor Piazzolla), Yo-Yo playing Jazz (Claude Boling), Yo-yo playing Brazilian music or John Williams. And now we have the Apalachia Waltz, a beautiful, virtuoso and haunting piece.
I, too, found many of the sounds unique. For a real experience, listen in a darkened room with a pair of superior earphones - the things you pick up will shock. I literally turned my head several times, convinced that the artist was in the room.

As one reviewer noted, this is not supposed to be the rustic sound one might imagine or (the reverse) simply an intellectual exercise. The artist (with able assistance) seems to draw on some kind of inner reserve and literally pour his soul into his newest project. I, for one, applaud this widening of the boundaries between genres and hope that it continues.
Let's not forget the other artists, particularly Meyer. Many times the celebrity saps all the attention leaving a wake of sore feeling in their wake. Ma has always been one to give credit where credit is due and in this case it is due to those who ably assisted him. My grade - A

5 out of 5 stars Love it- great for weddings.......2007-01-24

I used this and Appalachian Journey for my wedding music. I used Track 2 (Appalachian Waltz) as my entry music. The rest I just had playing on a cd player as background music while my guests were waiting on me. It was perfect for our outdoor Fall wedding. Hearing track 2 always brings the memory of our beautiful day flooding back.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar album.......2006-11-10

This disc is top-notch in all respects. The playing is great by Ma and O'Conner for sure, but the bass work is awesome. Meyer is as good a player as there is in the world at the present time in my opinion. I am a cellist and bassist and find it difficult to believe that some of the things he does are possible. If you like top quality string playing, order this album today.

5 out of 5 stars **Superb**.......2006-07-19

I absolutely love this album -- the music resonates with one's soul. Even if you don't have a cello fetish as I, you can't go wrong with this album. It offers a wonderful range from adagio to allegro.....A true musical feast. I especially enjoy Butterfly's Day Out and First Impressions. Dolce...

5 out of 5 stars The Magician's Name is Donovan.......2006-11-10

Being born in 1949, I grew up in the sixties, and was caught up in the Folk movement of the Kingston Trio, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and the lesser-known Phil Ochs. In the midst of these protest singers was the gentle, mystical sound of a young Scotsman named Donovan. Of all his recordings, my favorites were Fairytale, Catch the Wind, and A Gift from a Flower to a Garden. So now I am one down, two to go. I love his effortless way of singing, and the soothing sound of the flute. The imagery of Circus of Sours, the delicacy of Summer Day Reflection Song, the sadness of Ballad of Geraldine (Battle? Was your proofreader napping on the job?), and the power of Universal Soldier all create an absolutely beautiful listening experience. How fortunate we are Donovan had the ability to take a chance on his songwriting and singing skills and enrich our lives and souls with his magic.

5 out of 5 stars Some of his best work.......2006-08-27

I want to first say that I was not very familiar with this, Donovan's 2nd release. I was alway's able to hear the majority of the later works at my buddy Dan's house, and of course knew he started out as very much the acoustic guitar/folk singer type heard on Universal Soldier, but I was not prepared for this. Several years ago I was lucky enough to see Donovan at Chicago's Park West. He talked about how he went back to re-learn some of his older material and had forgotten how intricate some of it was even though it might seem fairly simple at first blush (he liked to tell a story before each song...way cool). I was amazed at the songs he played that night which I'd never heard before. Years later, I get this and realize that it contains many of those same songs. The atmosphere he creates on this disc is almost too beautiful, too rich, for words. It's the musical equivalent of having a friend share their deepest feelings with you. I found it very emotional from start to finish. While it doesn't have the overt psychedelia of his subsequent releases, it nonetheless is so amazing in its brilliance that it carries all the Donovan trademarks he was to become known for. In fact, you will probably hear some songs you heard before but forgot about. I could go song by song, but I think the best comment I could make is about Circus Of Sour where he spontaneously lets out a laugh in the middle of the tune. It's one of those rare warm moments that makes the listener realize that the performance is often as important as the song itself. Don't be afraid to get this if you aren't a huge folk music fan; it transcends the genre while at the same time remaining within it. The additional bonus tracks comprise the Universal Soldier EP and are the icing on this cake.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a Beautiful Record.......2006-07-18

This record, like "Catch the Wind" features Donovan accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica and I believe Shawn Phillips plays on a couple of the songs. If I remember right he plays on "The Little Tin Soldier." Anyway, it's mostly just Donovan. The record opens with "Colours," one of my favorite songs, then segues right into "To Try for the Sun," which (and I don't care what some people say the song is about) is my absolute favorite Donovan song. I've got the "Reedy River" bootleg and the way he performed the song on tour in 1967 is to die for. Actually you can get a version almost like that now, because they've just released the complete Anaheim Show. Whoops, I'm digressing, back to the album at hand. "Summer Day Reflection Song" is just simply wonderful. "Belated Forgiveness Plea" is, to me, one of the saddest songs ever written. I cry every time I hear it. Another song that does that to me is the Jefferson Airplane's, "Coming Back to You." Another sad song on this disc is "The Ballad of Geraldine" where Don takes a female part. The song is heartbreaking and breathless. But the real gem on this record is "The Ballad of a Crystal Man." In my opinion it is just about the best antiwar song ever written. The young people knew so much back then, why oh why has the world turned out the way it has. Ah well, this is truly a beautiful record, one I play all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Donovan's second LP stretches out from folk base.......2006-06-17

Donovan's second album, originally released in 1965, continued the mystically-charged folk direction of his debut, but it also charted the more varied directions he'd soon be exploring. The album version of the single, "Colours" (missing the harmonica bridge of the original 45) is arranged with acoustic guitar and bass, and gives off the dreamtime vibe of "Mr. Tambourine Man," as does the finger-picked, sleepy-eyed "To Try for the Sun." Neither feel imitative of Dylan (or Woody Guthrie for that matter), but instead reveal themselves as hippiefied versions of the same bohemian roots.

There are a few lightweights, like "Circus of Sour," but they're balanced by more experimental songs such as "Sunny Goodge Street." The latter shows off Donovan's jazz influences in its moody cello-and-flute lined waltz-time arrangement and impressionistic verse. The six bonus tracks include a quartet from the "Universal Soldier" EP, featuring a stark take on Buffy St. Marie's anti-war title tune and a droning version of Mick Softley's anti-Viet Nam lament "The War Drags On." Also included are single A- and B-sides "Turquoise" and "Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)." The former a beautiful, contemplative song that fits well with "Colours," and the latter a superb acoustic blues that found favor in rock form with both The Animals and The Soul Survivors. Missing is the 45 version of "Colours," which can be found on recent expanded CD editions of Donovan's debut.

Psychedelic flower power (and producer Mickie Most) would soon take center stage in Donovan's music with the follow-on "Sunshine Superman" LP, making this his last effort that focused so fully on acoustic-guitar based folk. Donovan's U.S. releases on the Hickory label rearranged the material on his early albums, making this U.K. reproduction the version to get. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

5 out of 5 stars Kaleidoscope of multi-hued sound that enchants.......2005-01-07

Playing Time - 73:50 -- Recorded live at Spivey Hall at Clayton College & State University in Morrow, Georgia, "Crossing Bridges" features violinist Mark O'Connor's Appalachia Waltz Trio, which also features violist Carol Cook and cellist Natalie Haas. The CD's booklet provides this quote from O'Connor - "I always think that music should elevate the spirit, stimulate the intellect and strengthen the heart." If those criteria define his goal, then the consummate pro and his two sidekicks easily succeed. This album of largely original material offers much in the realms of vitality, reasoning and emotion.

His rise to fame has been noteworthy. I remember when O'Connor, originally from Seattle, was just a young pup in the 70s drawing a large crowd in jam sessions with mentor Benny Thomasson at the National Old-Time Fiddlers Contest in Weiser, Idaho. In fact, he could identify specific classical composers at age three. He began playing guitar at six and violin at eleven. Before he had fiddled for a year, Mark had won second place at Weiser. At age 12, he was on the Grand Ole Opry. By 14, he'd won various fiddle and guitar championships, and the Winfield, Ks. guitar contest rules were changed to require that contestants wait at least five years before they could win again. He did. Touring with Dan Crary, The David Grisman Quintet, and The Dregs followed. In 1983, he embarked on a solo career and journey that has him "crossing bridges" into many musical genres.

In 1991, Mark & The New Nashville Cats (featuring Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, and Steve Wariner) won the CMA "Vocal Event of the Year" Award. Mark O'Connor also won the CMA "Musician of the Year " Award consecutively from 1991-1996. He toured with Marty Stuart and Travis Tritt in 1993. In more recent times, he has focused primarily on classical music. He wrote his first violin concerto in 2000. His 2002 Nashville concert with Chris Thile, Bryan Sutton and Bryon House was captured on his excellent "Thirty Year Retrospective" album (OMAC Records 5). The "Bowtie" track from this album has been nominated for a Grammy in the Country Instrumental category.

Now, O'Connor, Cook and Haas unite to recreate, with expert technical proficiency, the original 1995 "Appalachia Waltz" repertoire and some fine new material in the same tradition. The original two "Appalachia Waltz" CDs and tours featured violinist O'Connor, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and bassist Edgar Meyer. Yo-Yo Ma made a solo version of the title track his signature piece perfect for an encore.

Compared to the original sound with violin, cello and bass, the new trio's sound is more airy, fluid and light. No one should question the credential of Cook and Haas. Cook was a a member of Scott Yoo's great ensemble, Metamorphosen. She's also a champion Scottish fiddler and made her debut with the Edinburgh Symphony at age 16. Haas studied at Julliard under cello legend Fred Sherry. She also loves Scottish folk music. The album's 15-minute closer "Olympic Reel" medley is textbook string pyrotechnics. Some other technically impressive tracks include "Chief Sitting in the Rain/College Hornpipe," "F.C.'s Jig" and "Limerock." All in all, the generous 74-minute album gives us a kaleidoscope of multi-hued sound that enchants us from the first measure to the last. The sheet music is available on Mark's website. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars From strength to strength.......2004-12-03

If you know Mark O'Connor's work, it's probably enough to say that this is up to his usual standard of musicianship. The other striking thing about him is his knack for finding superb collaborators, whether they be giants who inspired him (as in his CD "Heroes") or newer arrivals on the scene, like the young cellist Natalie Haas. She takes on (for instance) Appalachia Waltz, a work which Yo-Yo Ma had all but canonized, and comes through with an inspired performance. I recently heard her play with Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser, and it's clear to me that she has a brilliant future ahead of her. As for Carol Cook, this is the first performance of hers I've heard, but it won't be the last. She disproves all the bad press violists get. By the way, this CD does include Amazing Grace, contrary to what a previous reviewer wrote. But by some glitch it's just added on as part of the tenth and last track and is not acknowledged either on the list of tracks or in the notes (which are otherwise very thorough).

4 out of 5 stars Excellent music from a trio of truly gifted musicians.......2004-11-12

I was fortunate enough to catch a performance of this trio in Columbus, GA this past February, and ever since that day I have waited for this CD to come out. Mark O'Connor is a violin/fiddle virtuoso, Carol Cook can coax mezmerizing sounds out of a viola, and the amazing Natalie Haas can make you hear cello in a whole different light. Only two things keep this from being a five-star recording. First, you can never capture the beauty of a live performance on a CD. Second, they should have included the chilling rendition of 'Amazing Grace' that they do in concert. (NOTE: As highlighted by a later reviewer, this track is indeed included as a 'hidden' track at the end. My comments on the piece still stand). At the show I attended that was one piece through which the audience sat transfixed. When the last notes faded, there were several moments of stunned silence, followed by a collective 'WOW' from all assembled there. Still, it's a great listen...give it a try and you won't be sorry.

There's a commercial inevitability to holiday song collections that can tempt music fans to mutter "humbug" under their breath. Yet while this collection (released in conjunction with the Tenors' Christmas Spectacular tour of 2003) is no less market savvy, in the end the trio's earnest, energetic performances earn their fair shair of respect. The trio's Celtic shadings impart considerable warmth to "Fairytale of New York" and other performances, but it's the range of influences they (also in solo and duet turns, all solidly backed by the Czech National Chamber Orchestra) bring to bear elsewhere that adds compelling new dimensions to these holiday favorites. Anthony Kearns' "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" may be solidly traditional, but Ronan Tynan imparts "I'll Be Home For Christmas" with some deft, jazzy drama while Finbar Wright gives "Mary's Boy Child" an unexpected Carribean spin. Elsewhere, the folk-classical influences behind "We Three Kings," "O Holy Night," and the gospel traditional "How Great Thou Art" span renaissance, baroque, and modern with a grace missing from the on-the-sleeve sentiments of the closing duo of patriotic warhorses--what would the Prince of Peace make of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," anyway? --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars We Three Kings.......2007-01-16

The 3 Irish Tenors are a joy to listen to in the Christmas season. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it.

1 out of 5 stars 3 Tenors Christmas.......2007-01-12

This was VERY disappointing - too noisy & just the wrong type of music for these guys. I played it once & will try to get someone to take it off my hands - I love listening the them, usually, but this album is just a dud.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Amazing.......2004-12-18

When I fist listened to the clips from this CD on Amazon I wondered why on earth they put the patriotic songs at the end, and also wondered a little at the other non christmas songs. After listening to it several times however I realized why. They don't leave Jesus in the manger, but take him all the way up to today! Wow. To me that is totally amazing. There arn't many christmas CD's that do that, but I think it really balances things out. I really enjoyed the Drummer Boy, and all of the rest of the songs. I would definantly say that this was a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars These Three Kings Rule!.......2004-04-24

This recording is a wonderful addition to any Christmas collection. It has power, charm and just enough reverence! Anthony Kearn's "Lord's Prayer" is magnificent! Finbar Wright's "How Great Thou Art" is awe-inspiring! After four years with the "Irish Tenors" poor Mr. Wright still must endure the ignorance of a few "fans", being constantly compared to John McDermott. Finbar took the "Irish Tenors" to a new level, as acknowledged by both Kearns and Tynan. I wonder how long "Ringo" had to endure being compared to Peter Best? Get over it people!

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner.......2003-12-22

In their second Christmas album, the three Irish tenors have another very lovely collection of Christmas favorites and a few not so well known. The duets are particularly beautiful and, while I, like other reviewers, would have preferred an all-Christmas album, the American anthems are stirring and well done. My only caveat is the absence of John McDermott, whom I miss. His voice added something less homogenized to the mix and although Finbar Wright has a more operatic tenor voice, I would prefer McDermott if I had my druthers. Nonetheless, this a a grand Christmas album and I recommend it enthusiastically.

4 out of 5 stars Over all great score........2006-10-23

I've been a fan of Harry Gregson-Williams for quite some time (and to a lesser extent, John Powell). Gregson-Williams is known for working with Hans Zimmer (they worked together on the soundtrack for The Rock) and he is also known in the video gaming community for his work on the Metal Gear Solid franchise (his take on the theme, not originally composed by him, is absolutely breathtaking in both the second and third games).

So it was no shock to me that I absolutely adore his work on the Shrek franchise. I can't say much here that hasn't been said by other reviewers, but I will say that the strongest work on the soundtrack involves the more serious, epic pieces (of which there are far too few).

Stand out tracks, for me, are "Fairytale", "Escape the Dragon", "Ride the Dragon", "I Object", and "Transformation/End".

The action theme of the film is used perfectly throughout the film, but it shows up far too rarely on the disc. I'm not sure if it's actually present less, or if it was a less-is-more kind of thing when it did play in the film. Regardless, it's a beautiful composition (though it does remind me of the "hero" theme from Deep Blue Sea).

You can feel Gregson-Williams' influence on "Escape the Dragon", as there are similar pulsing electric beats that are reminiscent, to me, of his arrangement of the Metal Gear Solid 2 main theme (which to this day remains one of my favorite pieces of soundtrack music ever - it's exciting, it's patriotic, it's epic. What more does one need?)

There's also some beautiful solo guitar work on this score that's a bit reminiscent of Trevor Rabin, but excellent regardless. My only gripe is that the disc feels a bit short in running length, but I think that's because a portion of the soundtrack was dedicated to pop and rock tracks, which show up on the second album.

If you're a fan of Gregson-Williams, Powell, or just film music in general, I strongly recommend picking this disc up. It'll make you sad and it'll get your blood racing.

5 out of 5 stars Completely surprising.......2006-05-24

Harry Gregson-Williams is a fairly new composer, but despite that, he is beyond comparison. (Except for John Williams and Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer). This is supposed to be an animated film, where music doesn't matter AS much. But this composer goes beyond all expectations, putting forth all his best efforts, bringing out the best in Shrek. You can hear some links from this CD to the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Harry's later work. Even by listening to the samples you can tell this music is hard to beat. I don't think Shrek would have won Best Animated Film if Gregson-Williams had not composed the music. BUY THIS CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best animated film music ever!.......2004-03-19

Although the other reviewers are right in that there isnt a lot of music on this disc, a little over 40 minutes, it's worth the price just for the first and 25th tracks. There are so many awe inspiring tracks on this cd it's impossible to pass up. The disc opens up with a very serious and magical theme on the strings and oboe. This theme is the same one that the princess sings in her fatal duet with the bird, that track is on here too. Also, there's the memorable Welcome to Duloc theme with the child choir. Also, the fight with Robin Hood theme with some riverdance in it is on this disc. The best theme on the disc is first introduced in the escape from the dragon track, with a funky beat behind it. It's presented in it's full orchestra and choral glory in the Ride the Dragon track which is guaranteed to give you goose bumps. All in all this is a very wide ranging score with some of the most light-hearted/goofy music ever along with some of the most inspired and passionate heroic music. I can't recommend this soundtrack enough. The music of Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell added so much to Shrek, making it the best animated film I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so glad to have it!.......2003-01-12

I'm so glad I got this score. Such a humorous film like Shrek doesn't sound like it would have so much beautiful music, but this score proves it does. The music is absolutely stunning, sometimes powerful, sometimes scary, sometimes sad and sometimes just beautiful. There are a few recurring themes, but they are great themes and sound nice in every song. Although most of the soundtrack is pretty serious, there are a few funny songs placed in, which only add to it's greatness. If, while watching Shrek, you happened to notice some of the nice themes like I did, then I suggest getting this score. It really is a great CD and I'm happy to have this part of my collection.

3 out of 5 stars didn't get enough time???.......2002-12-21

This is the third score that Harry Gregson Williams and John Powell composed together and after buying "Antz" and "Chicken Run" I had high expectations. Unfortunately this score is by far not as good as their previous ones. Still good though, but especially less comfortable to listen to. Most songs are just too short. By the time the theme had captured you the song is over. Strongest part of this album is the humor Powell and Williams have used. Some endings of songs are quite "unusual", like "farquaad's speech" and "merry men", which can crack me up if I'm in a funny mood. Strongest tracks on the album are "escape from the dragon" and "fairytale". The rest of the album kinda sounds as if the composers didn't get enough time to compose the music, so they just put the pieces they already had behind each other. Too bad, because this is a duo that has a lot to offer and hopefully they will soon again, with less, but much longer tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Crescent City Heat.......2007-06-12

From the first time I heard this one, ten years ago, I knew I'd be listening to it for years to come. Bernie Attridge's Pops Foster style bass and Chris Tyle's drumming boot the band along in a fashion that is relaxed, precise, and infectious. Tyle, who is also known for his hot cornet playing, is a real standout on this session. His dancing drums create a pulse and spark that remind one of Baby Dodds at times.Jeff Hamilton's piano fits well, adding some interesting intros and providing a chordal link for the hot horns who sometimes overpower him. He makes the most of his solo spots.
With a fine rhythm section cooking underneath, the horns are driven to some very intense moments. Charlie Fardella's lead trumpet is stong and unwavering. He sounds great in this context and his solos that never stray too far from the melody, are red hot. Mike Owen's Ory style trombone is another standout on this session. He slides, smears, growls, and tailgates beautifully. It's players like this who continue to keep this music alive and vital. Check out his "Woodlands Band" recording on GHB. Tommy Sancton's George Lewis inspired clarinet is full of taste and expression. He drips emotion on slower numbers like 'the old rugged cross'and burns with enthusiasm on the faster ones. Tommy Sancton grew up in N.O. at a time when Preservation Hall still employed first generation musicians like Punch Miller, Percy Humphrey, and Emile Barnes. He learned the music from many of these players firsthand, an experience that would have been awesome, to say the least. What he picked up from those early years has, maybe in part, added to this thoroughly enjoyable session.
There are 13 tunes including 'Smiles','Someday','Angry','Riverboat Shuffle','Willie the Weeper','Slow Boat to China', and 'Louisianna Fairytale'. From the first notes of the first tune-'Lover Come Back'-you know you're in for a thrilling ride. This Audiophile Studio recording from 1995, with a total time of 63:26 is recommended. Everyone contributes, there's plenty of heat, and they have a great old time band sound.

      Album Description

He was marketed as the British Dylan, but Donovan had a whimsical style of his own, as this 1965 debut album proved. Its mix of protest and romantic angst proved irresistable and the lead-off track 'Colours' became an instant standard. This deluxe edition adds five EP tracks, including the classic 'Universal Soldier'.
