Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Customer Reviews:
These boots are made for walkin'.......2004-03-06
It's time to search the living room couch for change. Brown weaves a black comedy of traditional tunes and Burnside originals, wailing through the blissfully offensive vocals and taking the Mississippi blues back to the glory days of Vox amplifiers and stainless-steel microphones. Kenny learned at a young age to play from the best, spending many of the years in his childhood under the tutelage of Legends such as Joe Calicott (He cut classes at age 9 to receive guitar lessons from Calicott), Johnny Woods and Mississippi Fred McDowell. His slide is raw and furious with determination, tearing through your speakers in conjunction with his arterial wail. After a quarter-century of touring alongside R.L. Burnside, Kenny Brown is back on the road now with R.L's grandson and drummer Cedric, forming the former half of the duo Brown & Burnside. They are currently touring with the Fat Possum Mississippi Juke Joint Caravan; featuring Paul "Wine" Jones, and T-Model Ford.
Kenny Brown - True to his roots!.......2003-11-10
If you are looking for TRUE real blues this is a must have! On this album Kenny Brown gives a rare insight into what it is and where it all started. As usual his guitar tone is as clear as a bell. In this world of over-produced garish blues wannabes Kenny Brown's "Stingray" is a welcome breath of fresh air.
Potent Stuff!.......2003-04-25
The name for Kenny Brown's new CD is taken from the brand of silver, second skin, boots he wears, Stingrays. The CD is a fusion filled mix of country, Memphis funk, blues and rock. The CD opens with a bang with "If Down Was Up" which features some punchy sax from a man they call "Jeff". The opener provides some contrast to the rather laid back feel of most of the other tunes on the disc. Brown manages to cover a couple of tunes from label mate, R.L. Burnside, "Miss Maybelle" and "Goin' Down South" and provides a stand out interpretation of Fred McDowell's "Shake 'Em On Down". Cedric Burnside, R.L.'s grandson who also plays on the new Mississippi Allstars CD, provides the drums while Takeeshi Imura fills the backbeat with his bass. This is some raw and potent stuff. Another Fat Possum winner.

This, quite simply, is one of the best blues/southern rock/country (REAL country) CD's you will ever have the pleasure of owning. Kenny Brown proves he is waaay more than RL Burnside's sidekick on this [great]collection of songs. The disc starts off with the rocking 'If Down was up' and keeps the energy level in overdrive throughout. Even slower, acoustic numbers like 'All I Want' and 'You don't know my mind' have a drive and propulsion to them that few of today's "country" or "blues" artists can match.
Kenny Brown is the real ...deal kids!
And yes, Burnside fans, Kenny throws in a couple RL songs. His version of 'Goin Down South' (buy it for this alone!) makes the JSBX version sound like the Bay City Rollers. And that's essentially impossible to do.
Cool fact: Cedric Burnside plays drums on this record.

Customer Reviews:
A very mixed musical bag . . ........2004-05-14
This recording is a primarily a collection of themes, and music from British television programs, from the 60's and early 70's. These are not the original recordings, but updated versions recorded presumably just for this compilation. Most of the music is performed by various orchestras, including those led by Laurie Johnson, Barry Gray and Tony Hatch. Being from TV, the pieces are mostly short, and are taken from various kinds of programs including comedies, dramas, and adventure/action type shows. There is great variety in the sounds you hear, and there really isn't an overall "theme" to this collection of themes. The rather detailed CD notes provide informative background and some vintage photos.
Music from programs that made it to America, like The Avengers, The Saint, or Danger Man/Secret Agent Man, may be familiar to American listeners, but unless you have been exposed to British television, much of this music will be unfamiliar. There are also some themes from American TV, like Perry Mason, The Fugitive, Peyton Place and Ben Casey, which may be recognizable.
Taken for what they are, some pieces are well done. For those who favor upbeat, action type themes, there is High Wire from Danger Man, the twangy Maigret's theme, and the themes from Riviera Police and Department S. The version of the theme from the Avengers, performed by original composer Laurie Main's orchestra, is stirring, as you would expect. The same cannot be said for the disappointing version of the theme from The Saint. There are a few vocal tracks as well, such as the rousing Stingray, sung by Gary Miller. Many pleasant and easy to listen to tunes such as Roy Budd's Mr. Rose, and the themes from M. Somerset Maughham and Dr. Findlay's Casebook can be found.
Though there will probably be something here for everyone, such a mixed musical bag makes a general recommendation most difficult. For most, the purchase of this set is very much a roll of the dice. If the track list does not look familiar, you might want to look elsewhere.

Album Description
1976 album for the British rock/soul vocalist.
Customer Reviews:
The best of all his albums.......2000-11-18
I think this the best of all Cocker's albums, although I must admit to a bias toward soul/R&B as opposed to straight rock. His voice is much mellower on this record than on others, but what sets it apart for me is the backing band. Eric Gale, Cornell Dupree, Steve Gadd and Richard Tee etc (see the same band on Paul Simon's One Trick Pony). I have owned the album since the mid 70's and am finally getting round to buying it on CD. Amazed it was never released here.
STINGRAY [the forgotten Cocker classic].......2000-11-02
Stingray was the last album Joe Cocker ever released for A&M Records in April of 1976. This much overlooked album[which A&M failed to promote adequately]ranks as a favorite among his musical peers. Joe turns in some unbelievable vocal performances on such tunes as "The Jealous Kind", "A Song For You", "She is My Lady" and "The Worrier"[which Features Eric Clapton on guitar]. The soulful rhythm section is anchored by Joe's then backup band Stuff with lead guitarist Eric Gale providing flawless guitar solo's throughout. Great backup vocals are provided by Patti Austin, Deniece Williams and Bonnie Bramlet. The late Peter Tosh makes a cameo as well on the Dylan tune "The Man in Me". If you like Joe Cocker this is a must have import[never released domestically]which is very reasonably priced. It's been said by a prior review of this album many years ago by James Chrispell"Stingray is full of gems worth seeking out".
