Cool moments aside, this is only for the "die-hard" fans.......2006-11-11

Though its original release was meant to be a promotional EP for the "Human Rights Now!" Tour, of which Bruce and the E Streeters were a part of, we in 2006 can simply look upon it as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on tour circa late-80s.

In my opinion, the music is so-so and could've relied a little less on the synthesizer effects.

The "average" feel is nowhere to be seen, though, when Bruce performs "Born to Run" with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and harmonica. With the rock-n-roll version gone, we truly hear the lyrics in a completely different fashion, which, I think, serves as proof of Bruce's musical and lyrical talent.

So, is it worth buying to hear an acoustic version of "Born to Run" (and a very moving version, at that)? Some would say "Definetely", others would say "No."

I myself purchased the EP from a local music-store. Do I regret buying it, even if I only liked "BTR"? No? If I'd known I could download this version of "BTR" from the Internet, would I? Yes.

Just got hold of this again. This version of Born To Run is simply awesome. There is the original and then there is this version. Both reduce me to tears. Do as you will.

Bruce brings feeling like he means it to "Chimes of Freedom." Feeling behind those words produces great power.

The rest of the disc is waste.

Better than Dylan.......2003-06-09

This entire CD is terrific, but the version of Chimes of Freedom transforms the Byrds pop tune into a classic. Most artists covering Dylan tunes wreck them. The Boss makes a good song great -- the height of his power.

A fine addition to the Springsteen catalogue.......2003-04-18

"Chimes" is a really fine little record. It was originally released for the benefit of Mr Kite - no, wait, Amnesty International - and it opens with a powerful, slow rendition of "Tougher Than The Rest", rolling along like a monolith, all thunderous drums and vibrating bass notes from the keyboards of Roy Bittan and Danny Federici.

Then follows the first release of the excellent rocker "Be True" (which showed up on "Tracks" ten years later), and a six-minute cover of Bob Dylan's "Chimes Of Freedom" (a few verses are cut, otherwise it would have been a ten minute version).
Bruce Springsteen, it has been said, grew up wanting to be either Roy Orbison or Bob Dylan, and his muscular rendition of "Chimes" is nothing less than majestic.

His powerful baritone voice is at the very forefront of the mix, and he sings the first two verses accompained only by piano and synthesizer, before drummer Max Weinberg comes in at the beginning of verse three.
It's still Springsteen driving the song along, though. The drums seem to be trying to keep up with him all through the next four verses, and they finally give up and fall silent for verses seven and eight, only to reappear as the song winds down.

Finally we are treated to an acoustic, Dylan-esque version "Born To Run", harp and everything. And like Dylan, Springsteen significantly alters the melody, making the song moodier, darker, more pessimistic.

Slavyanka Has Done It Again!.......2001-07-31

Slavyanka has always been one of my favorite groups ever since they came out with their first album of Russian religious music and I find this album to be one of their finest. It feature folksongs that are both familiar and unfamiliar and some pieces that non-Russians will recognize. Try it out and hear for yourself!

Amazing Bruce!.......2006-01-31

Bruce Springsteen is unique. End of story. No other artist alive today can touch him live. He truly is the king of rock. His own songs are so full of hope, life and spirit. He is the closest thing to perfection in terms of being a complete singer/songwriter the world has seen.. He even does Bob Dylan better than Dylan himself("Chimes of freedom"). The acoustic version of "Born to run" is a work of pure genius. A must for Springsteen fans.

canada vs u.s.?.......2003-07-23

Sorry to hear the u.s.-version isn't the same like the good old canadian one... saw this cd a couple of years ago in london, ontario, and began to cry when listening to it in the music store - it's definitely one of the most amazing springsteen live jewels I ever found. Especially the incredible version of Chimes of freedom makes your heart beat in a different frequency (borderline to ventricular fibrillation, sorry, I'm a M.D.:-); and who ever saw the Tunnel of love Tour and listened to the acoustic version of Born to run, who ever experienced this man standing alone with his guitar and his harmonica, looking back, remembering earlier times - like in a sentimental mood -, will never forget it - so I was pretty overwhelmed that this song found his way to a cd. It really does it's job in this arrangement...

3-star AVERAGE / 5 for cassette, 1 for CD.......2000-01-02

My girlfriend originally gave me the cassette of this recording when it first came out, and I absolutely went nuts over it. However, when the CD-3 came out, I got it and was disappointed by the editing done to Tougher Than The Rest and to Chimes of Freedom. Now that the CD was reissued, I had hoped that Columbia would have the good sense with the conventional CD format to restore Tougher and Chimes to original length. They still stuck with the old CD-3 edits! Now, I grant that the intro to Chimes is rather dated, since it was done to promote the Amnesty International tour in progress at that time. However, they could have at least restored Tougher, guitar solo and all. While I love this collection of songs, and it is great that Sony brought back this disc from the grave, I still have to give the CD reissue a ONE star rating for the unforgivable non-remastering done to it. If you don't want to shell out for the import version, stick with the cassette version---it contains the full tracks from the LP/tape original masters, and the sound for a cassette is a Bruce fan's dream come true. FIVE stars for the cassette version---in fact, buy TWO of the tape, because you will want to play that first copy until it is run to the ground!

Avoid the Domestic version, get the Canadian Import.......1999-12-22

I give this one star based solely on the fact that this transfer should have been complete. Instead, like the CD3, the guitar solo in "Tougher" and the intro in "Chimes" are missing. The Canadian import has no edits and the same cover art as the original EP (unlike the new US CD, which has a new pic of Bruce). Sure it costs a little more, but worth it. If you're a die hard like me, you'll probably buy them both anyway (like I did).

Simply the best live artist.......1999-12-08

A wonderful collection of Bruce live in concert after the Born in the USA tour 84-85. His cover of Dylan's song is one of the best songs I have ever heard. The acoustic version of Born to Run is heartfelt and moving and Tougher Than the Rest and Be True are especially good bonuses for a huge Bruce fan as myself. Bruce is simply one of the all time greatest, if not THE greatest.
