Greatest Hits is the budget option for those who've concluded that two discs of Donovan is a disc too many and zero is one too few. Troubadour, Sony's 1992 Donovan box set, boasts nearly three times the tracks this 15-song single-disc retrospective offers, but Greatest Hits delivers what it promises: "Colours" and "Catch the Wind" from his folkie phase and "Mellow Yellow," "Sunshine Superman," and "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" from the lad's best-pal-a-flower-ever-had period. Also included are plenty more catchy folk-rock hits cut between 1964 and 1970 as well as four bonus tracks, including the delightfully earnest "Atlantis" and "Barabajagal," with the celebrated first-edition Jeff Beck Group providing backing. Donovan's blissed-out liner notes ("Whatever you think this song is about, it probably is") round out the package quite quaintly. --Steven Stolder --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Dare To Compare.......2007-05-27

Looking back, I think it might seem easy to dismiss some of this as being lightweight psychadelic dribble. But, in all fairness to Donovan and his producer, Mickie Most, I think they did the most with what they never had an opportunity to work with. They were always aware of The Beatles and their producer, George Martin. The truth is, Donovan was never alloted a Beatle-like budget and the time necessary to compete with The Fab Four and their fanfare. Donovan did "The Beatles" by himself (with studio musicians and time-restraints) and never had the added touch of Sir George Martin to make it all come together in the studio. For the most part, I think a producer like Mickie Most served Donovan very well. Their colaborations are a textbook example of where less is sometimes more. However, looking back, Donovan was never less. As a musician, he was right up there with Sir Paul and the lads. If he would have had all the Abbey Road facilities at his disposal and George Martin to guide him, I think it is very likely that this music would have been even more enduring. As it is, some may criticize Donovan for sounding somewhat simplistic. Well, remember this, none of the solo Beatles could ever compare to Donovan and his unique and special creative abilities on their own. He was and still is that talented.

This is my "never-was-has-bin" super-group that I want to go into the studio with Sir George Martin:

Drums: Mick Fleetwood

Bass: John McVie

Lead Guitar: Peter Frampton (back-up vocals)

Keyboards: Sir Paul McCartney (singer-songwriter)

Acoustic Guitar: Donovan (singer-songwriter)

Think of the fun :o) !!!

4 out of 5 stars GREAT CD.......2007-05-14

This CD was everything I remember Donovan to be, GREAT complilation and great music!

5 out of 5 stars The catchier catch the wind didn't catch here as best as catch could.......2007-04-13

I'm also familiar with the LP version of this CD, and the conclusion of the late 60's "electrified" epic-sounding "Catch the Wind" followed by a new song (at the time): the melancholy after-thought-like "Lalena," gave the "greatest hit" collection an album feel. This new expanded re-arranged edition -- more faithful to the original folk recordings of "Colours" and "Catch the Wind" -- is still outstanding, but the album-like sensibility has been ousted in favor of it being a straight-forward compilation.

Even so, it warrants 5 stars. Heck, it adds "Atlantis." At any rate, though, I'm not sure I can recommend this newer version of the "greatest hits" over the earlier edition. Basically, I loved the "Catch the Wind" re-recording this CD lacks.

BTW: For any Taoists out there who'd like to hear a little of it put to music, check out Donovan's take on Tao called "The Way" from his late-90s CD: "Sutras." That wouldn't have been out of place here on this CD neither (though not quite a hit)....

5 out of 5 stars I forgot how good he was..........2007-04-08

...and how many chart topping hits he had during the Flower Power era. The best song, though, is one that I don't remember getting much air time back then. "Catch the Wind" is a haunting, sad, tale of unrequited love and very reminiscent of Bob Dylan's work in the words and the sound of it.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-03-31

the discis great and as always amazon handled the tranaction with great care and quick handling.

5 out of 5 stars Certainly the only Donovan album you will ever need to own.......2002-05-08

Donovan is clearly one of those artists where you can pick up the Greatest Hits collection and not have to worry about getting all the albums. The thing is the man had some great songs, regardless of whether they got high enough on the billboard charts to count as bona fide "hits." The great thing about Donovan is that you can get a bunch of people in a room, listen to his album, and then argue over what are his two best songs. You put "Hurdy-Gurdy Man," "Sunshine Superman," "Mellow Yellow," "Season of the Witch," and "Jennifer Juniper" on the short list and have everybody choose their two favorites. But if you notice that you and your significant other each picked two different songs, then take that as a sign that you do not have a fundamentally sound basis for your relationship.

5 out of 5 stars A Younger Generation's View On Donovan.......2001-12-21

I bought this CD about three years ago, when I was in my teens, and it has easily become one of my favorite albums to listen to. The lyrics and the music give an overall feeling of joy and care-free times. Although the music and the lyrics, at times, are not very complicated and do not seem to be very substantial, they are brilliantly written to enhance the values that Donovan stood for. Peace and Love.

4 out of 5 stars Last time I bought it was 20 years ago, better the 2nd time.......1999-02-02

Fun, spirited. The stereo effects are fun. 20 years was too long to wait for the CD version. Good music to vacuum the house with, nice and loud.

5 out of 5 stars The Biggest Hits Are All Here.......1998-12-01

Donovan's collection brings back warm, wonderful memories. His major hits are all here, no need to get anything else that contains album filler, outtakes, etc. This is FOR REAL. What a way he had with words and music, whether doing those beautiful ballads or pop-rock tunes. Great fun to play in the car, too. A major contributor to the British Invasion era of rock & roll.

5 out of 5 stars Cheers For The Psychedelic Troubadour.......2006-01-31

This is a real find! Donovan might be best remembered for stages covered in flowers with lot's of incense in the air (along with our smells of the illegal kind). But to be real about the whole thing he was and is an ARTIST of real TALENT... and this CD is proof that he delivers the goods in his live shows.
This gem is from Vancouver, BC, Canada in 1986, it is solo Donovan with just guitar, voice & harmonica. The first thing to discover here is that this CD has AMAZING SOUND QUALITY, it's crystal clear and its sounds like you are sitting front and center in a small room with Big D... this disk rates a for real big Five Stars for sound quality... STELLAR
Second thing to note, Donovan sounds fantastic on this one, This is a great performance, with a few stories thrown in to set the 60's tone for all listening. "Catch The Wind", "Mellow Yellow", "Universal Soldier", "Lalena","Jennifer Juniper", "Hurdy Gurdy Man", "Atlantis", "There is a Mountian", all big hits way back when, are included and in this acoustic / solo setting they all sound fresh and new.
Four Bonus Tracks have been added to this edition of "Greatest Hits Live" and the are nice, but they just a touch lower on the Sonic scale than the first 14 cuts.
All Donovan fans must add this one to their collections as it a great Disk.... A Real For Real 5 Star Disk... BUY IT.

5 out of 5 stars Live recordings at their best.......2004-07-26

This recording is an example of live recordings at their very best. Donovan sings many of his popular hits and even introduces a few of them. In addition, this recording has very good sound quality and it is probably the second best thing to being at the concert. However, the thing I like best about this recording is the audience participation. Donovan includes the audience in "Happiness Runs," "Mellow Yellow," "Mr. Fluteman," and "There is a Mountain." If you are not familiar with his music, this recording is a great introduction. However, even if you already own several recordings of him, you should get this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Missing Some Songs, but Still Great.......2006-07-21

This record was orginally released as "Donovan Rising" and was recorded live from several concerts from 1982 to 1986, but it was put together so beautifully that you'd never know. It's been released under several different names and on several different labels. But no matter what label, no matter what cover, no matter what they call it, this is still one fine recording. Listening to this CD, and I'm calling this a CD and not a record, because this was the first Donovan recording to come out on CD, everything before was put out on black vinyl first, you remember those big discs that played on turntables, whoops, I'm digressing, like I was saying, when you play this CD you can almost imagine Donovan as that eighteen-year-old teenager who burst upon the scene with "Catch the Wind" back in 1965. He sounds as young on these songs as he did then.

And you can tell that whoever put this together really cared, really understood Don's music, really went for quality of not only sound, but performance as well. Boy, what I wouldn't have given to be able to spend the hundreds of hours pouring through all the songs and performances, being there through all of that must have been glorious.

Donovan's recording of "Catch the Wind" here sends chills up your spine. His rendition of "Hurdy Gurdy Man" with George Harrison's missing verse is equally chilling. The acoustic versions of "Sunshine Superman" and "Cosmic Wheels" are stunning. The version of "Young Girl Blues" takes me right back to the "Mellow Yellow" period. It has always been one of my favorite songs. I could go on, keep gushing about this fine live record, but I'll stop now. Oh wait! I forget to tell you that this is a must own Donovan disc for anybody who is even remotely interested in his music. You gotta get this one, you really do!

This particular version of this beautiful live recording is missing four songs, "Young but Growing," "Stealin'," "Love Will Find a Way" and "Sailing Homeward" and lose a star for that, because you should go out and find the complete disc, there are so many versions to choose from, it won't be hard.

5 out of 5 stars Often better than the original versions.......2003-04-22

For this release, Donovan returns to the songs that made him famous. His voice sounds absolutely great here; even better than on some of the original releases in my opinion. All of the studio effects and fills are gone here, and on many songs that works to their advantage. Like Bob Dylan, I think Donovan often gets bogged down in schmaltzy over-production, and so a chance to hear the man by himself, with only an acoustic guitar and a harmonica, is a real treat. (Okay, there is a sax(!) solo at the end of Lalena).

        Highlights:

Hurdy Gurdy Man - Extended here; Donovan tells a masterful story of him, 4 Beatles, 1 Beach Boy, and Mia Farrow in India. Also, he sings a new verse...written by George Harrison!

Wear Your Love Like Heaven - Absolutely beautiful. Much better and more delightful than the studio version.

        Universal Soldier
To Susan On the West Coast Waiting - Donovan performs some very nice renditions of his anti-war material.

5 out of 5 stars This is a GEM... even if you have the songs on another CD!.......2003-02-10

I was younger, and listening to Donovan in a different way back in the early seventies - so last month I pulled out a few old vinyls and enjoyed re-discovering Donovan. (I forgot how much I liked him.) I wanted to get some kind of "Greatest Hits" CD to re-discover his music without my albums' hisses and pops - and that's when I stumbled upon Donovan's "Acoustic Live" CD. I must tell you - IT IS A GEM of a recording. What a find!! If I liked Donovan before, I really like him now. Most of this CD is Donovan and a guitar - just as the title implies. The listener will appreciate not only the familiar music, but also the quality of his voice in this CD. Wow - I was pleasantly surprised. I thought he was good back in the 60s and 70s - but his acoustic renditions of these 14 classics (recorded live, I believe, in 1997) will have you not wanting to go back to the earlier versions. The psychedelic frills are gone, and we are left with a strong, melodic voice that enchants the listener. This CD has to be the best "accidental find" I've made in years - and you wouldn't have to be from the Woodstock-era to realize the same thing. "Acoustic Live" is easily worth its price. I could have paid double, and still felt I got my money's worth.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it!!! It's so cheap and so good!!.......2002-06-06

MTV has released numerous "unplugged" albums from artists which show their more accoustic/personal side. In many cases (ie, Neil Young, Nirvana, 10000 Maniacs, etc..) I prefer the MTV unplugged editions more than the studio releases by the same bands. This Donovan live album runs 47 minutes (I guess it's the same as "Classics Live" minus 4 tracks) and came out well before those MTV unplugged series. Oh but this is of the same quality. No bells and whistles here. Just Donovan sitting down in front of a small crowd (sounds like about 100 people) with his accoustic guitar reliving some old memories (I think this was a live performance in the mid 1980's???) of songs he did 20 years earlier. Alot of Donovan classics here sung with heart and soul and his accoustic guitar. On the beautiful "Lalena" you will hear an etheral flute and on "Young Girl Blues" you will hear a nice soft saxophone accompanying him. On the remaining tracks, just accoustic guitar and vocals!!! This cd is fabulous from start to finish and a must for any accoustic guitar fan and a must for any Donovan fans. You will hear his personal side here and it's as if he is singing in the same room to you and a few of your friends. This is great stuff. Cost is VERY cheap. Truth be known, this is much better than many $20 albums out there. This one is a no-brainer. Just go and buy it!!!

This is a collection of live songs, that was previously released as "The Classics Live". It has less songs than the original. The performances are really good, however, so unless you've already got the previous version, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits - what more can you say?.......2002-03-23

Donovan has a string of hit songs to his credit, and this record aims to put most of them together in one place. In this it succeeds and the result is a great, singalong CD that you will want to play over and over again. Also included are some of his lesser-known songs (at the time the originals were on sale, that is) such as 'Poor Cow' and 'Aye my Love' which will quickly become favourites. There is an information booklet about the tracks giving details that you may not be aware of. The collection was produced at a time when compilation albums were in the minority, but sadly this is no longer the case. This CD is, however, well worth having even if simply to complete your collection.
