Released immediately following the elaborate Crossroads box set, Journeyman is EC's way of feigning humility while cranking out the blues for his attentive audience. Featuring the help of famous sidemen George Harrison, Phil Collins, Robert Cray, Chaka Khan, and David Sanborn, Journeyman is less a superstar romp than a moderate collection of songs tastefully produced and economically performed. Flashes of Clapton's lead work burst through while his singing remains modest. The cover of "Before You Accuse Me" is heartfelt and while Clapton may at this point be incapable of delivering the down and dirty power of jukejoint blues, he still manages to find a little bit o' soul among the pickings. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars Have a Little Faith .......2007-03-08

If for no other reason but the debut of the classic "Running On Faith" this Clapton venture deserves a space on any music lover's shelf. At the end of the 1980's what was left to say? Many classic artists put in two cents in 1989; Dylan, Joel, the Stones, Ronstadt, Henley, each with different views and widely different results. Clapton combined the blues with some old fashioned rock and roll to create a worthy farewell to the excess of the 80's.

" Pretending", the first track and single from the album, is a rocker with some electric influence. Typical " you've done me wrong" song. " Bad Love" was the second single, again, nothing profound but easy on the ears. " Running on Faith" is one of Clapton's best songs. Period. The Gospel choir at the end is an affirmation of faith in action. " Old Love" is another song that lilts along with a haunting message. Everyone has one of these painful ghosts.

" Journeyman" is a far cry from " Slowhand", but it does offer a tale of a rocker aging gracefully.

3 out of 5 stars Good, Not Great.......2006-11-15

When I first got this album, I really wasn't expecting much. Clapton was never the bloke I turned to when I wanted to rock out. Upon the first listen, I concluded that Clapton cannot rock. He's too firmly rooted in the blues to really crank it out, and his later work consolidates this fidgetyness with a tendency to add an unecessary gloss to his work.

"Pretending" and "Bad Love" are the closest thing to 'rock' one finds on this album. Muffled wah-wah-ing takes place in front of a dated rhythm sequencer's noises. Elsewhere, the album incorporates the gaudiest 80s technology in the worst possible manner. It's like the cheesiest Miami Vice episode meeting sappy lyrics. But, to be fair, I'm fond of cheesy 80s machine music... it just doesn't gel too well with Clapton.

Some tracks are too bluesy for my tastes, while others try too hard ("Breaking Point"!).

In the end, I must admit that I don't hate the record. However, the mix of sounds doesn't coalesce into a nice whole. I suppose, however, that it's infinitely better than the Boys 2 Men rip off that was 1998's "Pilgrim." Bleh.

5 out of 5 stars My Bridge to the Blues.......2006-11-11

I bought this album in cassette form years ago. At the time I really didn't know much about EC other than his association with the Beatles, his track on the Back to the Future soundtrack, and the intriguing guitar duel on George Harrison's Cloud 9 title track.

Having gone through most of his work since, surprisingly, this album remains my favorite. In a nutshell, it was a great first impression.

Even though you can hear George playing and singing backup on "Run so Far" on this album, it came as a poignant surprise to find out that it was George's own song, and to hear his version of it on his final, posthumous album.

4 out of 5 stars A VERY POLISHED ALBUM.......2006-07-31

THIS ALBUM CONTAINS TRACKS WHICH ARE A MIXTURE OF UNASHAMEDLY STRONG ROCK MUSIC, SOME 'LIGHTER' POP SONGS AND A COUPLE OF BLUES THROWN IN FOR GOOD MEASURE. EC's VOCALS ARE PRETTY GOOD THROUGHOUT AND HIS SESSION MUSICIANS/SINGERS ALL PUT IN 'SLICK', PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCES. THIS IS NOT ONE OF EC's 'LAID BACK' ALBUMS AND, HENCE, THE OVERALL SOUND/ PRODUCTION IS MUCH FULLER (WHICH SUITS THE TYPE OF MUSIC ON THE ALBUM).

I LIKED ALL TRACKS ('BREAKING POINT' AND 'LEAD ME ON' BEING THE WEAKEST - BUT STILL OK). HERE ARE A FEW COMMENTS ABOUT MY FAVOURITE TRACKS (Songwriters in brackets):

PRETENDING (Jerry Williams) - A fine example of pulsating rock music with plenty of guitar licks to enjoy.

BAD LOVE (Eric Clapton/Mick Jones) - another fine rock song which features a pretty impressive guitar solo.

RUNNING ON FAITH (Jerry Williams) - Slow tempo song featuring some mellow slide guitar. Quite a 'soulful' sound; liked the choir too.

HOUND DOG (Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller) - Loved this version, better than the one by Elvis (which is pretty good too). Features some 'lazy' (but NOT sloppy) guitar playing.

RUN SO FAR (George Harrison) - A real 'gem' of a pop song with a strong melody and good lyrics; a 'lighter' sound compared to most other tracks.

OLD LOVE (Eric Clapton/Robert Cray) - Contemporary blues with a 'moody' quality. Great arrangement and some outstanding guitar playing (Robert Cray/EC).

A GOOD ALL-ROUND ALBUM WHICH IS LIKELY TO APPEAL TO A FAIRLY WIDE AUDIENCE.

3 out of 5 stars The Comeback Album? .......2006-07-11

Refusing to be relegated into classic rock history, Clapton comes out with a very modern, revamped sound. The result is Journeyman, and, for the most part, it does not dissapoint. There is a lot to suggest that Clapton has matured not only as a player but as a songwriter as well. There are songs of betrayal and loss in a kind of middle aged sensibility. And the playing on here is very polished and professional. This also happens to be the drawback of this album. Most of Clapton's solo work has been slightly underproduced and understated, lending itself to a soulful approach. The standout songs here are Pretending, Old Love and Bad Love. Given his career, there are much better albums, but this one will do for the casual fan, with a limited range of Clapton knowledge.

    Album Description

This is Montreal-based Deadbeat aka Scott Monteith's fourth full-length release on the ~scape label. Since the release of his previous outing, New World Observer in March 2005, Monteith has spent the vast majority of his time on the road, honing his skills as a master craftsman of genre defying electronic dance music. Though fans of Monteith's previous ~scape full lengths might find it difficult to envision his music as the soundtrack to a rollicking dance floor, Journeyman's Annual is the first to showcase an updated version of the Deadbeat sound that has quietly been overtaking his more meditative work over the last year and-a-half. This is modern bass music of an entirely unique sort, crafted with the intention of moving asses as much as stimulating minds. Easily the closest stylistically to his previous work for ~scape, the opening two tracks employ minimal techno's careful ruminations on endlessly repeating groove structures, while sitting comfortably in dubstep's doom-filled, 140 bpm pocket. For the album opener, Monteith enlists the aid of violinist and fellow Montrealer Sophie Trudeau (ex-GY!BE, A Silver Mount Zion) to craft what is potentially the darkest song in his entire catalog. "Melbourne Round Midnight" combines a lurching funeral organ line with vaporous horns and a thunderous one note bass drop to create a chugging dub monster. Along with Trudeau's string arrangements, Monteith also calls upon vocalists to expand the album's sonic palette. This record also features Bristol-based Bubbz, who spits a fiery tale on "Refund Me." "Deep In Country" marks the triumphant return of Moral Undulations, whose bad man vocal stylings provide a rhythmic assault. "Gimme A Little Slack" features Montreal's DJ Jah Cutta, and the dynamic duo craft a piece of pure heavyweight bashment, filled with searing percussion, impossibly low bass, and a vocal hook that will stay in your head for days. Finally, as a bonus to this already fine set, this record includes Deadbeat's much sought-after remix of Saul Williams' "Black Stacey" from 2005. Previously only available on an incredibly rare promo-only 12", the track has been a trademark finisher of Deadbeat live sets and has driven the floor into a frenzy each and every time. Easily his most diverse album to date, Journeyman's Annual is a far reaching account of new creative connections and rhythmic inspirations drawn from the four corners of the globe, and a spectacular sign of things to come from one of electronic music's premier low-end prophets.

    3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2003-05-19

I've been snapping up CDs by artists I've heard on internet radio and this is the first one that has let me down. It just doesn't have the depth of many others I've purchased and will eventually find its way to the Used CD store.
I will give it a couple more listens just to make sure.
Why not give Budha Building a try instead?

4 out of 5 stars Itýs chill, with a couple of freaky drum & base interludes.......2000-02-06

If you wondered what a touch of drum & base might sound like if added to one of Paul Franklin's `WOOB' efforts, you'll love National Hijinx. As `Journeyman', he retains many of the ambient soundscapes, movie dialogue samples and simple swirling melodies that made `Woob 1194' so cool. Make no mistake, National Hijinx ain't a CD of ketchy ditties or partay music faves. Although it's sound is younger than Woob 1194 or 4495, it's still too intellectual for mass consumption. Hijinx is continuously-mixed chill music with a couple of freaky-fast interludes, intended for solo listening or with rather musically-informed friends. If you like Kruder & Dorfmeister (K & D Sessions), Tosca (Opera), Boards of Canada (Music Has the Right to Children), Kid Loco (DJ Kicks), certain Pete Namlook or Robert Rich albums, and--as mentioned--Woob, I'd be deeply surprised if you didn't like this.

5 out of 5 stars Canterbury Tales of 2003.......2005-08-30

Since the release of the "Cropredy Capers" Box Set in 2004 much live Fairport has seen the light of day. This year (2005) The Woodworm Archives series has released two fine CD's from 1975 and 1996 that both belong in any Fairport collection. In addition the "Live Convention" CD has been re-released and re-mastered with several bonus cuts making it another "must-have" disc... (and this is only August).

The new double CD set is showcase for the current band that has been touring around the world for almost nine years now. This set is from the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury , England on 22 Feb 2003 and the complete show is featured over 2 disks. This tour featured many tunes from "Wood & The Wire" and "XXXV" and some of the old favorities such as "Walk Awhile", "Level Pegging" & Journeyman's Grace are here as well. "Rosie" is wonderfully sung by Chris Leslie. The "Theme From MASH" & "End of a Holiday" are part of the "Matty Groves" finale and "Meet on the Ledge" features guest Andy Guttridge (2nd verse) on vocals & guitar.

This is Fairport where they belong...on stage singing and playing and really having fun. If "Scum-Half Bricking" is still available (Derby show from 19 Feb 2003) with Dave Swarbrick, pick that one up as well.

Another great live disk from the chaps...can't wait for their long-overdue return to the "Left Coast".

5 out of 5 stars One of Claptons best ever.......2005-07-16

Layla is probably the best CD Eric Clapton has ever recorded.
This Cd is a very close second though.
Eric Clapton opens with Pretending which was a major hit for him at the time.
He then does Bad Love which had a video to go with it, another great song.
Running on Faith is next and to me is the "Gem" of this CD.
Clapton sings very solefully and this song is very well written.
Hard Times is next as he redoes the Ray Charles classic.
His guitar is as good as Ray's piano was on the original.
Next is Houndog and this is the original version, the way it appeared when it was done as a blues song before Elvis Presley recorded the song.
No Alibis is another great song.
Run so far is a duet with the late George Harrison and is a longer version of the song that appears on "Brainwashed".
Old Love is a song that Clapton and Cray did together with each doing their own verse. Clapton wrote the opening verse just in case you want to know.
There are two more songs and then the CD closes with a strong version of Before you Accuse me.
This CD is a must for any record collection much less Clapton fans..............It dont get any better than this

5 out of 5 stars Some of Clapton's Best Work.......2002-07-17

"Journeyman" may be the best latter-day Clapton album. Ol' Slowhand incorporates the '80s energy and solid production values to craft one of his strongest recordings since "461 Ocean Boulevard." "Pretending" is one of the best rock songs of the era, the acoustic break in "Bad Love" is genius, and "No Alibis" is just good clean classic rock fun. One of the best albums of the decade.
