5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

3 out of 5 stars Sheer mediocrity.......2007-03-12

In the '60's, you could expect great things from anything Clapton released, and you'd usually get them. But his solo career was consistently inconsistent. On the high end of the specturm are discs like Unplugged and 461 Ocean Blvd. On the low, Back Home and Backless (any album with "back" in its title by Clapton is bound to suck). This occupies the space between the two - killer in places, filler in others. A bare minimum of blues (the only blues song is The Sky Is Crying, and naturally it's the best here). Instead, it's all either reggae, completely insincere soft-rock or slightly harder, but still completely insincere relatively hard rock. Of course, the soft rock's hard to listen to, but nothing's as bad as Wonderful Tonight (though Pretty Blue Eyes and High come close), and I like Better Make It Through Today. No, the best stuff here is the reggae (Swing Low, Sweet Chariot) and the rock (Little Rachel). If you're a Claptonophile, buy it if you wish, and I will insist you could do much worse. But don't expect Layla.

5 out of 5 stars What a great album!!!.......2007-02-27

WOW is all I can say. Why did I have to buy this online? No stores stock it! Why!?!? PLEASE buy this!

5 out of 5 stars Too Subtle For Most.......2006-03-23

You know who you are. The long-time fan of Clapton's, the person in the audience nowadays yelling "Go Slowhand!" as Eric plays lick after passionless lick, the dude who wishes Eric would reunite with Cream for good. If so, this is not for you. Sorry. If it's any consolation, I used to be one of you. Somewhere down the line, my road forked off and, at the tender age of 20, here I am saying that this album is too subtle for most. What is the world coming to? What sense could I have? Hear me out.

The genius behind these songs is not in the mindless soloing, or the screeching vocals. In fact, the record has neither. Rather, it's "There's One In Every Crowd"'s economy that gives it a five-star charm. Most words are barely spoken over a whisper. Most solos barely reach above the tenth fret. And they barely last more than thirty seconds. Instead, the album is full of melodic, moody guitar playing, and breathy even sexy singing. And, God, what a band- they're guaranteed to hit the groove that will either make you melt or shiver by the time the last seconds of "Opposites" dissappear back to 1975. That is, unless you're the guy mentioned above. If you are, again, I'm sorry...your loss.

2 out of 5 stars Let's Get Real Here..........2005-11-19

I would have given this 3 stars just to be polite to a man whose music I respect very much but with all of the 4 and 5 star reviews on this site, someone needed to step in and provide some balance. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is nice and EC's cover of The Sky Is Crying is pretty good but I'd lean toward Elmore Jame's original or SRV's before this one. I'm a long-term EC fan, from his days with the Yardbirds on. If I had a penny for every time I've listened to him play a tune, I'd probably own Amazon! So I love the man and his music and I'm not calling this a BAD disc. I'm just trying to put some dynamic range in the rating process. There are people out there that use these reviews to make buying decisions and if you're one of them, I'd hope that you already had at least 20 Clapton CDs before you point your credit card at this one.

3 out of 5 stars 461 Out takes.......2005-11-18

Eric Clapton came out in the Summer of 1974 with 461 Oceam Blud. What happened is that the band did so many songs for that session that all were not incuded on 461.
What we have here is essentially an album of out takes that did not make the cut.
Many should have also been out takes for this CD as well.
Clapton is very laid back and does not resemble same man we heard with Cream or Derek and the Dominoes.
Songs on note on this album are The Sky is Crying the classic Elmore James song. This is an outstanding effort by Clapton.
Better Make It Through Today is a slow blues song that Clapton wrote himself. I has always been my favorite song on this album.
Pretty Blue Eyes is a nice acoustic song with an added dobro. I like the combination on this song quite well.
High is another song that Clapton wrote and another worthy effort.
Opposites finishes the CD on a strong note. This is not one of his best CD's but does have some good songs. This is for collectors only.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-05-30

This is a great album. I only skip about 2 songs on this album. This cd has hustler raps, gangster raps and personal/introspective tracks. My favorite tracks are Live Me Long and Take My Pain. This cd has great production and good guest features. There are maybe a bit too many features but its all good. Some other Great songs are All I Know and I Swore. Cop this album, you will not be dissapointed. Read the reviews, sample some tracks and then order it.

FIEND AND THIS ALBUM ARE BOTH IN THE TOP 3 OF THE NO LIMIT FAMILY. FIEND,MAC,AND SOULJA SLIM ARE THE TOP 3 MC'S FOR NO LIMIT. C-MURDER, SILKK THEY ARE COOL TO BUT, THE OTHER THREE ARE THE BEST (IN MY OPINION ) FIEND IS ONE OF THE FEW RAPPERS ON NO LIMIT THAT CAN DO THE ALBUM ALL BY HIM SELF. THIS ALBUM IS IN THE TOP 3 OF THE NO LIMIT ALBUMS. MAC'S SHELL SHOCKED, AND SOULJA SLIMS ALBUMS COME CLOSE. IT'S A COIN TOSS. THIS ALBUM KICKS ASS, FROM START TO FINISH...IT HAS GREAT BEATS, AWESOME LYRICS, FIEND'S VOICE SOUNDS ORIGIONAL...AND EVEN THO HE DOESN'T NEED THEM THE GUEST RAPPERS JUST ADDS TO THIS ALBUM. THIS IS THE ALBUM TO GET AT ANY PRICE. HIS SECOND ALBUM IS O.K. BUT THIS IS THE ONE...IF YOU FIND IT DON'T EVER LET IT GO.

5 out of 5 stars No Limit Top 5 Album.......2005-11-19

This was released in No Limits glory days, but is one of the few albums you could still listen to without being called hot. From start to finish this album is a classic. The style Fiend brought to the game could never be duplicated. One of the few artist worth listening to.

3 out of 5 stars Fiend Got Em Fiendin.......2004-12-28

A ray of hope in in a bleak future for No Limit. Fiend managed to drop a all round decent album on a label known for droppin half-a**ed albums. Most of No Limits efforts have been an effort just to listen to. One or two decent anthems per album and a whole lot of kryin an whinin an just general weak, garbage musik. Production is always good but man, most of these rappers kant rap period! Fiend is an exception. I dig watchin this kat perform too. I dont know what homeboy did before rappin, all I got to go off of is what he conveys to me thru his musik, and he convincingly gives off that gangsta vibe I dig so much. Hes got one horrible hook here where dude tries to sing and it reaks. but its one hook out of a whole album, a No Limit album at that! Amazin! Kop it, its all good.

5 out of 5 stars Fiend(n) for more.......2004-12-08

All I know is that Fiend went out with a blast. This album is too tight. I rocked this all the time and would buy the album over again when the CD would scratch. What can you say about Fiend, his delivery is on point and the song he did with Mystikal was the best match on the CD next to Fiend and Soulja Slim(RIP). 5 Star salute

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but kind of disappointing.......2006-04-17

This isn't a bad recording, but the tracks are not the actual performances off of any cast recording of any of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals. The reditions of the songs on the disc are of varying quality. Some are pretty good. Some are borderline awful.
It is a good collection for inexpensively getting a lot of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most popular songs in one place and having them there to be able to listen to get the idea of what a certain song sounds like and is about. It isn't the collection of definitive recordings for certain roles. In fact in a couple examples, I wonder if the performer fully understood the context of the song he or she was singing &/or what it was about. Overall, the album is good, for the most part, if not excellent.

However, the liner notes for "The Essential Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber" is another matter. I don't mean to be unkind, but the author of the comments on the different tracks (one Rexton S. Bunnett) is blatantly WRONG in multiple instances. I don't mean just in nit-picky details, but in major plot details/context of songs, like the fact that Bunnett identifies "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" as being sung by "our heroine" (who he does not even identify by name as Christine Daae) as she thinks about her lover, not as being sung about Christine's dead father. He also says that the Phantom has found his perfect love and "Angel of Music" in Christine... because HE is the Angel of Music who Christine believes has been sent to her by her dead father, and because although the Phantom is obsessed with Christine, that relationship is far from "loving" (even if Christine shows him compassion. I feel like these (and a couple other mistakes) are major plot points to get wrong. A good amount of the commentary reads as if Bunnett might have written it at the last minute, fudging his way through entries on musicals of which he had little knowledge; like what an essay I might write on a book I never read for my college class but had quickly looked up on Cliff's Notes would sound like. In terms of sheer editing, there are spelling mistakes, run-on sentences and spacing errors ("Any DreamWill Do")in the liner notes. Where was the copy editor?
And the most frightening fact of all, under Bunnett's credentials, it says "Harper Collins has just published his revision and updating of the Collins Book of the Musical."
I am being very critical, but I think that for a widely-released CD it is reasonable to expect the liner notes to be at a professional level, as they were most likely supposed to be.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected..........2005-04-23

I was looking for a CD of the original performances and this CD doesn't have them. I suppose it was my fault for not looking closer, but the songs just weren't the same. Personally, I was not impressed. If you don't care that they aren't the originals then it is nice to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Some great performances, some not so great..........2005-04-18

This CD is actually pretty good, considering you get 40 songs for less than $16. Let's evaluate the pros and cons.

Pros:

Two classic songs that are performed excellently are Phantom of the Opera and I Don't Know How to Love Him.

Of course you want to compare Phantom to the classic Michael Crawford/ Sarah Brightman version. Well, guess what? This version is BETTER. The woman has a deeper voice than Brightman, and her singing style is just awesome. The ending of this version (you know, the "Sing, my angel of music, sing for me!") is different, but in a good way... I think.)

And of course, the standard for I Don't Know How to Love Him is Yvonne's version. This version is different, but it grew on me quickly. This version has a country feel to it, almost. Somehow it works and sounds great.

There are a lot of great performances in this collection. My favorites include: Heaven on Their Minds, Everything's Alright, Could We Start Again Please, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Buenos Aires, Rainbow High, Only You, Starlight Express, Angel of Music, Masquerade, All I Ask of You, Half a Moment, and Whistle Down the Wind. I think they're all great versions of their more famous counterparts.

Cons:

First of all, there are some technical problems that are kind of disappointing. A few of the songs have a very echoey sound. Any Dream Will Do, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, and There's Me are the songs that come to mind that are the worst in this regard. It isn't really bad, just enough to be slightly annoying, more so when the volume is turned way up on your CD player.

A few songs are worthy of skipping over when listening to this collection. In my opinion, Superstar, Sunset Boulevard, and Gethesmane are the biggest disappointments.

Superstar just doesn't cut it for me. The singer really overdoes it, making it overstylized... really makes you yearn for Murray Head. I can't stand listening to it. Just my opinion.

Sunset Boulevard is one of my very favorite musicals, so I was really hoping that the singer would do justice to its title song. Unfortunately I don't think he did. You can't help but compare it to Alan Campbell's fantastic version. This guy has a very choppy way of singing, when I'm used to it being sung so smoothly. Maybe it would grow on me, but I don't think I'll give it a chance to. However, that last note is much stronger than Alan Campbell's. It doesn't make up for the rest of the song, though.

Finally, Gethsemane. The inevitable fact is that NO ONE can sing this song like Michael Ball. This guy tries, he really does. But he doesn't have the right voice or the right style. So please listen to Michael Ball's performance of Gethsemane if you want to know how breathtaking of a song it can be. It's on the Royal Albert Hall DVD, and I'm sure he's got it on one of his CDs.

Anyway, overall, this is a good CD if you like quantity over quality. Don't buy it for the classics, you'll probably end up disappointed with many of them. Buy it for the lesser known songs. You probably won't like every song, especially if you're a big ALW fan, but for the price, it's worth it.

If you want classic versions of classic ALW songs, you might prefer something like "The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection".

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-03-11

The singer(s)does not do justice for the lyrics. It was grating to the ears. Save your money for the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Talent at Its Best.......2003-01-03

What a pleasure to hear a collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's beautiful music from such wonderful voices accompanied by an outstanding symphony. This sensational CD is a treasure to own.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.
