5 out of 5 stars Finally a Messiah with fervor!.......2005-10-20

I've hunted a thrilling performance of The Messiah through 240 versions so far. This is the best I've found. Some are self-conscious, dutifully singing as instructed. Some are almost childish in their lilt. Some are overblown with so much bombast that you can barely hear the heart of the music. Some are concentrated on faithfulness to the original instruments. If you want a performance that will make you shiver with the power and joy of the music, this is the one. The singers are singing about GLORY. They sound as if they are ecstatic. The musicians are at one with the music and they create a virtual cathedral wherever this CD is played, just close your eyes. Or, let your own imagery, be it celestial, or of great oceans...carry you away.

There are so many performances of the Messiah out there that it is very difficult to point to a difinative one, but I'd put this in the catagory of the "very good" ones. As other reviewers have said, every performance is different and has its own character. Each has stronger and weaker points. Here the conductor and musicians have made good, solid musical choices. There is an amazing attention to detail which is not so obvious the first listen through but which makes the piece shine. The tempos seem to be right on, and there is no frivolous over-embellishment by the soloists. There is no attempt to be showey. The dramatic dynamics in the first section of the overture are interesting, but seem to work after you hear it a few times. This performance also includes sections which are often omitted (Second half of "He shall feed his flock," "Thou art gone up on high," "Great was the company of the preachers," and "Death where is thy sting"). I prefer the more intimate quality of a small ensemble of musicians to the mega-performances by the London Philharmonic, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, etc.. As with this performance, the smaller group lends a clarity to the music, where the larger ensembles can get a little "muddy" at times. Just my personal preference. Overall, this is a very good performance, and certainly the low price (being on the Naxos lable) makes this a clear choice.

I was more interested in "The Messiah" for the religious content than as a music critic, but this was too much. The strings are tinny. The orchestra is plodding. The soloists and choir are thankfully very good and seem to understand the meaning of the words. It is a shame the sound mix is uneven. The male parts come across loud and clear, but the poor women. For instance, No. 9 Oh thou that tellest..., the soloist sounded like she was singing in an echo chamber far from the mike. This is one of the most disappointing versions of "The Messiah" I have heard in a long time.

I was really surprised with the new that the Messiah's New World premiere was held at Trinity Church in October 1770, twenty-eight years after it was written. This fact only will make one proud in having this CD among his collection.

Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.

As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.

I 've just read the firt customer review and wanted to say I totally agree with his opinion.No doubt about it:UP AGAINST IT deserves a much better place than the one he's got in the opinion of real Toddheads (in fact I think many of them don't even really know the existence of this item in his discography).Still, it's Todd concentrating on melodies,vocal harmonies, drum machines and keyboards:we,Todd fans ,all know what it means!I only put 4 stars just because, the project being a musical for Broadway,his maverick musical spirit is nowhere to be seen here.But what gorgeous melodies!

Another fine example of the depth and breadth of Todd's music. The tunes are fantastic, the lyrics - whimsical. Sorry I missed this play when it was out, but this is a great second -- Loved it!

Christopher Young wrote the score to this film..There is another "soundtrack"album available for this film,containing urban vocals,but this is the SCORE album,and it is among Young's best...It has a funky jazz groove to it while at the same time conforming to the dictum that a score must compliment the activity taking place on screen..Alas,like most score albums,this one went rather quickly out of print,and is now available only as a "collector's item"...even so,if you can afford the price of admission then by all means buy this disc...you won't be disappointed...

A heartfelt and telling score to fit a brilliant movie. I am in love with "Up Against The Wind" by Lori Perri. It is such a passionate song telling Cleo's demise.

          In this compilation you will get 22 love themes from one of the most acclaimed composer of film music, Ennio Morricone. Here the composer offers a testimony to his exceptionnal versatility with a series of love themes taken from films of every type : action films, comedy, thrilers, adventure films, film of social commentary etc. These themes are original soundtracks and show very well that Ennio Morricone is not only a western movie composer. This is one of my favorite CD and I highly recommend it.

          If your looking for some real music by a real muscian, than Peter Stone Brown's "Up Against It" is your destination.

          A wouderful blend of Folk, Blues and Rock that never disapoints, unlike what the mass recording business pushes on the public today. Mr. Brown delivers true, heart felt songs from the amusing to the sorrowful, it never misses to move the listener.

          This is a great album, it really is. In fact, it is almost all I have been listening to in the past couple weeks since I bought it. The songwriting is strong, and the sound is grounded and earthy, but still vibrant. "Here on Earth" is an absolute classic-- if it would have been written by a well-known singer-songwriter a few decades ago, we'd all be singing it around campfires and the like. Well, maybe not campfires, but it would rank up there with "Blowin' in the Wind", "This Land is Your Land" in the running of great songs for humanity. There is so much to despair about in this world, but so much to celebrate-- we often forget that. This album has some wonderful imagery: "We exploded in the glare of the full moon at the end of the longest day," "I was shattered in the haze of a dead summer's daze," etc. Brown's vocal performance is excellent, by the way, and very original, I can't think of anyone who sounds quite like him. There are humorous songs, songs of desparation, songs of affirmation-- all songs of humanity. If you like real American music, real human music, give Peter Stone Brown's album a listen, you won't be disappointed.

          Peter Stone Brown's CD "Up Against It" is one of the best albums I have ever heard, and Peter is one of the finest musicians in the business. Not only are his songs brilliantly written, but they are also poignant, moving and powerful. Peter's voice has the ability to sweep you away to an incredible place that you never want to leave. I love every song on this CD, but the one that touches me most deeply is "You Don't Have to Close the Door". It's a beautiful song by an artist with a beautiful heart and soul. I've seen Peter perform many times, and every show is unforgettable. I believe and truly hope that we will hear much more from him very soon. Peter is definitely first-class!

          I hate to break up the review love fest here, but... well let me say that these are good songs, done real well, and it's good listening. But the extent to which these songs borrow (I'm being kind here) from Dylan is pretty epic. I mean, Rockabilly Guy is straight out of the Basement Tapes' humorous monologues, and elsewhere the themes and instrumentation and chord changes, not to mention the nearly dead-on Dylan phrasing, make this almost a scholarly study of Bob. I think I could quote about a dozen references easy if I had to. Which is fine I guess, but somewhere underneath these songs is a killer original songwriter who's still moored to Bob's dock.
