At the -VERY- top of his Fingering Form.......2006-02-25

Famed as he is for so many accomplishments, most present-day Alt Rockers know him as the "guitar god" of the sixties on the strength of studio-recorded performances from an earlier -- and far more challenged -- time in a pretty tortured first 40 years.

Blessed as -we- were to hear his simple but memorable riff-and-rythym work in the studio, we were forced to grab for bits and pieces of his more lyrical live solos on such as "Concert for Bangla Desh," "The Last Waltz," the wretched "Live Aid," bootlegs, the Stones' "Flash Point" and "Knebworth '90."

Here, finally, is the evidence for the court of inquiry into who really -was- the greatest rock guitarist of 20th century, not to mention the greatest writer / performer. Others may argue (quite legitimately) for Jimmie P. and Stevie Ray, but a listen or two to this should set them straight.

We have here renditions of "Badge," "White Room" and "Sunshine..." from the dim and distant right there in same box with equally fine compositions from 15 and 20 years down the road like "Pretending, "Running on Faith," "Bad Love" and "Old Love," proving Mr. C. was on top of his blues rock writing game all along.

(I'd kill for a nice version of "Your Friends are Tearing Us Apart," but it wasn't to be, and there are other missing gems, as well.)

Good as (most of) the -songs- are, however, what stands out here for the ages is the lead guitar work. I've heard speed, I've heard technique, and I've heard taste. I've rarely heard them -together- in such -lengthy- solos at anything approaching this level. For that alone, I'd add one of these to your stack even if it cost three or four times as much as it does here.

The sound quality is lush (and crystal clear) but effectively -live-. The band work back of The Great Man is -great- (bassist East and keyboardist Phillingames deserve special credit). Kissoon's and Niles' back-up vocals are close to Lisa Fisher's unparalleled work for the Stones in the same era.

I was hopeful when "24 Nights" was released with a decided lack of his other great material that we'd have at least some of the rest on a later disc, but it was not to be. For that reason, and because the final six and half minutes are wasted with a contractural requirement for the orchestra on "Edge of Darkness," I dropped my rating from five to four.

Regardless, I don't think a rock guitarist can call himself "serious" without owning and studying the performances here... and here alone.

A very strong live album.......2005-11-23

24 Nights is a concert that was recorded over the period of 9 evenings at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
During the couse of the 24 evenings he uses essentially 2 bands and a band with an orchestra.
The fist installment is his current band at the time.
They do songs from his latest CD. The songs include, Pretending, Bad Love, Old Love, and Wonderful Tonight.
The second phase is a blues phase with Robert Cray and Buddy Guy playing guitar with Chuck Berrys piano player Johnny Johnson.
The Blues tracks in my mind are the best on the CD.
Clapton does Watch Yourself, Worried Life Blues and Voodoo Man, as well as Have You Ever Loved A Woman.
The third phase is with an orchestra that includes Bell Bottom Blues, Hard Times and Edge of Darkness.
The version of Wonderful Tonight is haunting. He slows the song down and with Katie Kasssons vocals the song is outstanding.
If you like Blues or if you like EC you need to get this one.

Good, tear-it-up live stuff .......2005-03-21

Solid and powerful music. The live recording quality is A+. A reminder that EC still has it. Make it part of your collection.

Almost 3 and half stars but still worth the purchase.......2005-01-21

I love live Clapton releases. This is a good release but I feel the songs are rushed and bland compared to other "live" versions. I cannot stomach the end of "Wonderful Tonight", especially if you ever seen the video of it, sounds like a cat in heat...but there are highlights including the songs released during this time period "Pretending", "Bad Love", and a nice version of "Bell Bottom Blues"....maybe this was the 24th night, I just feel the energy had left the building.

Another solid outing from a more mature Clapton.......2003-06-23

This is an excellent compilation taken from 24 night run at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1990. This is a great CD for hardcore Clapton fans or for the unfamiliar music lover. The sound quality is top notch and the whole band is in fine form.

Disc one- Badge is a great opener with a cathcy little piano riff that will bring a smile to your face and get your head boppin. White Room and Sunshine kick as usual although a little more soloing from Clapton and few other insturments would of been appreciated. A fun Watch Yourself and interesting Edge round out an overall solid disc that you will leave in your player for a long while

Disc two- Pretending is my favorite song on the whole album and this song prooves that Clapton hasn't lost contrary to what some of his fans think. He still has the ability and the drive/energy, he just displays less often which is a little unfortuante. Both Bad and Old Love are good follow ups and the rest finish suit nicely.

One of the great recordings.......2005-04-28

I have loved this recording for over 40 years. I own the original vinyl LP. I was thrilled when this became available on CD. I was afraid that some of the richness and velvety tone would be lost in the transition to CD, but it sounds fine. (Almost as good as vinyl.) This is a superb rendition of the Rhapsody. Rubinstein's interpretation is romantic and masculine; the music lives and breathes. Rubinstein's version of de Falla's "Nights in the Gardens of Spain" is lighter, more elegant and exotic. There might be better versions of the de Falla piece out there, but for me, this version of the "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" has never been surpassed. And as I said, the sound on this CD is faithful to the original LP, and while not quite as full and nuanced as the original, it is still fine enough not to distract me when I listen to the CD. I highly recommend this CD.

The Rubinstein/Reiner Era.......2003-09-25

Excellent conclusion to a famous era. The Rachmaninoff, being recorded in January, of 1956 along with the 2nd Piano concerto of the same composer, was the lasting tribute to two great musical performing together. They had their first meeting in April, of 1954 when the duo recorded the Brahms 1st, which was an astounding success, and critics along with RCA hoped that the two would do more recordings of famous concertos together. But, Rubinstein who loved to travel and make his place in the world, became almost non-existent after the Brahms session (which is available through Classics as LSC-1831, or the ARL1-2044 vinyl release of the stereo release), when RCA had big plans to record Rubinstein again with Reiner after their two weeks of concerts together performing these famous concertos of Liszt, Schumann,Beethoven and the Rachmaninoff's two famous pieces-being the 2nd and this Variations. The duration of the two weeks of concerts put a heavy strain on these two old performers where sparks flew during the Rachmaninoff Piano concerto sessions and the RCA staff had to do some serious negoiations to remedy and contain the "sparks" that flew between these two artists. The recording sessions were completed, and the two never performed and recorded again. What a PITY!! It would have been grand to hear these two record the pieces that RCA wanted to record for posterity. These proposed recordings would have definitely been history in the making in the audiophile world. Of course, this recording of the Rachmaninoff was masterfully captured by the RCA crew of Richard Mohr and Lewis Layton. The Variations is on Harry Pearson's TAS list along with some other Reiner recordings.

Brilliant performance, excellent recording.......2000-03-15

Rubinstein and Reiner produce an excellent recording of Rachmaninov's Rhapsody. The piano is clear, the orchestra is strong but not overwhelming, and the disc sounds great in all respects.

Alicia de Larrocha is probably the finest interpreter of Spanish Piano music.The Art of Alicia de Larrocha is a collection of recordings performed by the artist over many years.There are 7 CD's in total. Each Cd cover has a beautiful picture of Ms de Larrocha at different times in her performing career. An excellent example of her versatility, from Bach to Manuel De Falla,her musicality and clean technique are characteristic of her playing,well brought out by the recording process.
The sound quality is excellent.
A special delight are some rarely heard pieces like a Soler Sonata, an Sonatina by Montsalvatge and a Prelude by Mompou.
Very inspiring to pianists. I strongly recommend it!

A feast for piano lovers!.......2003-12-29

Alicia de Larrocha has always been one of my very favorite pianists, and while I was a student during the 1970s and early 1980s I eagerly snatched up each of her recordings as soon it arrived on the shelves. In the long twilight of her illustrious career, Se?ora de Larrocha has tended to concentrate on playing Mozart concertos and sonatas in public, music which demonstrates her sterling musicianship and tone without over-taxing her technique in a major way. Many people who have only heard her in this repertoire might not be prepared for the grandeur and sweep of her virtuoso accounts of big Romantic pieces, such as the Liszt Sonata, and Schumann and Chopin, all of which are represented here. The technique is big, the tone glorious, the musical interpretations impeccable, she has it all in spades. I am so happy to have her lovely account of the Chopin F Minor Concerto back in the catalog, as well as her colorful romp through the Khachaturian Concerto.

If you love great piano playing and you love Alicia de Larrocha, do not hesitate for a minute. Buy this box set while it is still available.

"Ferenc Fricsay: A Life in Music" consists mostly of top notch 1950s mono recordings in excellent sound, from DG's back catalog. I knew of Ferenc Fricsay (1914-1963) mostly from his recording of Bartok's Piano Concertos 1,2,and 3 with pianist Geza Anda. Fricsay also recorded Mozart's operas "Don Giovanni" and "Die Zauberflote", both with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the cast for DG; also Beethoven's 9th Symphony; Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra", and "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta", all for DG. Fricsay did not live a long time, dying at age 48 from cancer, but he made alot of recordings from 1949 until his death in 1963, many of them sadly hidden in DG's vaults for decades.

DG has given the public a great release with this 9 disc set of Fricsay recordings, mostly in mono, but excellent sound. Do not be afraid of the mono sound: it is very clear and balanced, in many cases better than many stereo and even digital recordings made more recently. Included are Beethoven's Symphony 1; Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with the vocal duets included; Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony; Franck's Symphonic variations and Rachmaninoff Paganini Variations with Swiss pianist Margrit Weber; Haydn's "The Seasons" (complete, live performance with Maria Stader, Ernst Haeflinger, and Joseph Greindl); works of Falla, Francaix, Hindemith, Frank Martin, Hartmann, and others. There is a wide variety of music and you will not be disappointed.

Most of these recordings are with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, which Fricsay conducted for the majority of his conducting career. The RIAS orchestra was "Radio in the American sector" of Berlin, a part of West Berlin during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Some tracks are with the Berlin Philharmonic, others with the Berlin Radio Orchestra. In all cases, the orchestras play very well, responding with great precision to every nuance of Fricsay's direction.

I believe Fricsay would have wider recognition had he lived longer. He was roughly a contemporary of Karajan, Solti, Giulini, and Bernstein, and is sadly underrated today. Perhaps this collection will help to boost his reputation with a new generation of music lovers born after his time. Highly recommended.

A great conductor's legacy of great performances of music of a wide variety of composers........2005-09-18

Some two years after Mr. Richman posted his review, I wish only to support his high rating of these masterful performances by one of the greatest conductors of the mid-twentieth century. These recordings are gifts of grace. The fact that this collection remains available is little short of a miracle. And in addition thre is a Fricsay set in the series of "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" also still available. Many other recordings of performances under the baton of Ferenc Fricsay are to be found if one searches under his name on Amazon. His recordings of Verdi's Requiem and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on DG remain among the greatest ever made of either of these two eternal masterpieces.

Try the $12.00 2CD "great Conductors" set first. At that price you can't lose. I predict that having heard those recordings you will quickly seek out and purchase "Ferenc Fricsay, A Life in Music." Too expensive? Not at all. It's worth every penny. It's easily worth several months of anyone's budget for buying CDs. And the recorded interview with Fricsay, already ill and seemingly knowing his death is approaching, will inspire you even as it breaks your heart. His death as he approached his 40th birthday was an incalculable loss to the Western classical tradition. Yet we do have the recordings -- go and listen to them!

Brilliant "Life in Music" Rescued from the Vaults.......2003-08-13

Now that Deutsche Grammophon is part of Universal, we have seen some interesting things happen, and not all of them bad. What I'm referring to in this case is the new "Original Masters" Limited Edition Box Set series. Finally, the classical music world has taken a page out of the jazz reissue handbook -- put out a quality product featuring rare recordings but make its availability limited, and people will snatch it up.

Now in its second round of the "Original Masters" box sets, DG has chosen to follow-up on the success of the "Great Conductors of the Century" series. They have just released two glorious 9-disc collections of the performances of conductors Ferenc Fricsay and Igor Markevitch, the vast majority of which have been previously unavailable on CD.

This particular set, "A Life in Music," showcases some of the numerous recordings made by the great conductor Ferenc Fricsay for Deutsche Grammophon, many of which have been rare (and expensive) collector's items for years. As the track information is non-existent above, I will try to be of assistance.

The first disc contains Beethoven's 1st Symphony (1953) and the Overture and Incidental Music to Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream (1950) both with the Berlin Philharmonic (BP), and Prokofiev's 1st Symphony with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) from 1954.

Disc two features Mahler's Ruckert-Lieder with Maureen Forrester (BRSO, 1958), and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony (BRSO, 1959).

Discs three begins with Respighi's orchestration of Rossini's La Boutique Fantasque (BRSO, 1955) and ends with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade (BRSO, 1956).

Disc four features the great Waltzes, Polkas, Overtures and Marches of the Strauss Family (all with BRSO from 1949-52). Disc five focuses on Fricsay as an accompanist with pianist Margrit Weber (and the BRSO). Together they tackle Falla's Nights in the Garden of Spain (1957), Francaix's (1956) and Honegger's (1955) Concertos for Piano, Franck's Symphonic Variations (1957) and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (1960).

Disc six shines the spotlight on 20th Century composers. Here we get Von Einem's Zwischenspiel Interlude (1949), Hindemith's Symphonic Dances (1950), Hartmann's 6th Symphony (1955), and Martin's Petite Symphonie Concertante (1950), with Gerty Herzog on piano, Sylvia Kidd on harpsichord and Irmgard Helmis on harp.

On discs seven and eight, Fricsay performs a memorable account of Haydn's The Seasons. This is a live recording with the Berlin RSO from 1961 featuring soprano Maria Stader, tenor Ernst Haefliger, bass Josef Greindl and the St. Hedwigs Cathedral Choir, Berlin.

The final disc, number nine, wraps things up with "Ferenc Fricsay: A Life Retold," a 57-miunte interview complete with excerpts of memorable performances.

Despite the fact that most of these recordings are in mono (only the selections on disc two, and the Paganini Rhapsody are in stereo), the first rate performances more than compensate for any audio shortcomings. Well, I guess the consolidation of the music industry isn't so bad after all, as long as I can look forward to more reissues like Ferenc Fricsay: A Life in Music.

Being devoted to the classical arts and trained as artist myself I am refreshed to hear Ms, Ganjoula's performance and the obvious level of commitment required to achieve such an understanding of music. I especially enjoyed her rendition of Alexander Borodin's Au Convent. And her album is my first exposure to Lyadov's work, "What a Pleasure!" I enjoy it more each time I hear it. I hope so much to hear more form this talented woman in the near future. Does she have anymore works out there?

Album Description

The songs for voice and piano by George Walker are among the finest written by an American composer and are "as outstanding as they are varied" according to Fanfare Magazine. Modus for Chamber Ensemble was commissioned by the Cygnus Ensemble. It received its premiere in New York in March, 2001. The four movements are characterized by recurring motives and highly rhythmical sections of great intensity. The title, Modus, refers to the elegant techniques used to transform and unify the movements. The Prayer for Organ was composed in 1996, 50 years after Walker's famous Lyric for Strings, a memorial to his grandmother, was written. The similarity between these two works lies in the use of contrapuntal techniques. The Improvisation on St. Theodulph is a fantasia on the melody stated before the work begins. The Prayer and the Improvisation were commissioned by the regional chapter of the American Guild of Organists in Washington, D.C. Spires was commissioned for performance by Dr. Mickey Thomas Terry at the Convention in Denver of the National Chapter of the American Guild of Organists in 1998.
