Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
One of the most eagerly awaited albums in rock history, Big Brother & the Holding Company's 1968 major label debut (they'd previously released one thinly produced collection on the small Mainstream label) made good on all the hype generated by Janis Joplin's amazing performance at the Monterey Pop Festival the year before. Crowned by its hit single, a churning remake of Aretha Franklin's sister Erma's "Piece of My Heart," the album also contained Joplin's Monterey showstopper, Big Mama Thornton's "Ball and Chain," as well as the Gershwin classic "Summertime," on which Joplin's always underappreciated band (especially guitarists Sam Andrews and James Gurley) match her vocal intensity with their own ferocious playing. This expanded reissue includes two previously unissued outtakes ("Roadblock" and "Flower in the Sun") and a couple of heretofore unheard live cuts ("Catch Me Daddy" and "Magic of Love"), all from 1968. --Billy Altman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Big Brother & Holding Co........2007-07-09
Not what I expected. Even though I listened to some of the music before ordering, I expected a dif. sound on some of the recordings. Every song is about the same...screaming.
Introducing Janis Joplin, queen of soul and her fellow bandmates...........2007-05-16
I first heard CHEAP THRILLS, by Janis Joplin's Big Brother & The Holidng Company, on vinyl. It was a life altering experience. At that time, it was the age of cheesy boy bands, screaming divas and mindless techno. This 1968 release was a breath [no, make that a gust!] of fresh air. This album starts off with a bang ("Combination of the Two") and relentlessly grows with intensity and bold musicianship. For starters, Janis' accompanists and back-up singers are seamless. I don't care how stoned out they were. They sound amazing, and a lot better than many sober artists of today. You can tell, since this was a live recording, just how stoked the audience was to see them. Janis encouraged...no, tried DEMANDED audience participation. Joplin thrived on drawing energy from the crowds that came to see her, and this is really made evident here.
What sets this music apart from other bands of its time (or of any time, really) was the combination of terrific, brilliantly orchestrated and arranged instrumentals, Joplin's amazing, spectacularly expressive vocals, channeling the agony ("I Need a Man To Love") and the ecstasy ("Summertime") of love and life. Plus, there are four bonus cuts, on this CD release of the album. I love you, Janis. It is really extraordinary how many artists have been inspired by her. There are truly no substitutes of imitations for someone so incomparable. Buy CHEAP THRILLS and consider it your introduction to real music.
4 1/2 stars........2007-03-24
there's a line of thought that's been floated out there that big brother & the holding company were not up to par with the talent of janis joplin. bunk. while nobody is going to accuse them of possessing any amazing facile grace on their instruments, the fact remains that ms joplin made her most powerful music with these boys. CHEMISTY here trumps technique. big brother's raw sprawling sound perfectly compliments janis joplin's wild vocals. she sounds possessed by some spirit of liberation at times here, shrieking a juxtaposed answer to the musicians fury. her performance seems to draw an energy from the wicked sounds being produced around her. this entire album is a wild rock and roll ride, and a must for all collections. the work she produced after big brother & the holding company seems tame in comparison.
A WONDERFUL EARLY LISTEN TO JANIS AS WE ALL KNOW HER.......2007-03-11
i have always wanted to check out this album, and now i see what others meant when they listened to it. janis showed her behind on this one. my fave on here though is TURTLE BLUES, one she wrote. her performance of this is a wonderful thing to listen to. janis, when she is into it, man, has a way of sending chills up and down my whole doggone body in an odd way. i also like that last bonus cut on there as well........i cannot think of the name of it!!!! all in all, this is an enjoyable album. i would recommend it to anyone who has CLOSED MINDED opinion about janis joplin's singing style. actually, i also recommend anything where she is live..............especially early.
My Favorite Album.......2007-03-10
Cheep Thrills is my old man's favorite album, daddy! When Janice Joplin was with Big Brother & The Holding Company they were both at their best and it wasn't Janice. It was truly the whole band Big Brother not just Janice (tho she was stellar). The cd has bonus cuts on it which don't improve the album. In it's original layout it was just the coolest from the Crum comix on the jacket to the lineup of pure genius classics. Got it nice -n- cheep

GOOD UPBEAT COUNTRY/SOUTHERN ROCK ALBUM.......2007-05-01
Confederate Railroad always seem to put out a good upbeat album and on this one they pay tribute to some of their heroes like Johnny Paycheck, Keith Whitley, Alan Jackson, Hank Williams Jr., David Allen Coe, Billy Joe Shaver, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Daniels, Dave Loggins, Joe Diffie, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Although the originals are more Country sounding Confederate Railroad sure add a nice Southern Rock flavor to these classics. I gave this 4 stars because I felt that they have sounded better (vocally) in the past. Instrumentally though they have never sounded better. Pick up a copy if you enjoy a good rockin' country album.

Not for the ignorant........2006-12-07
My vinyl version of this album is long worn beyond the playable. I thought this would be a great replacement. But this format will not function on the typical cd players of today. I think it belongs with the Sony betamax movie recordings.
Absolutely awesome!.......2004-04-23
I have never heard this album sound so good. The live parts of it are really live for the first time. What a great mix. SACD really rocks! Plus some of the songs are longer than they used to be ie. Piece Of My Heart.
THE EXPERIENCE THAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR.......2002-12-20
This disc and I go back over thirty years. I can remember my sense of wonder upon it's first listening. Janis' awesome vocal attack. It was simply reviting. The sound of the LP was decent. The sound of the CD has always been dreadful. Dreadful to the point where I had avoided listening to it for years.
Well, I am very happy to report that that is not longer the case. This SACD version of these tunes is awesome. Gone is the shrillness of the CD vocals which could force you out of the room. In it's place is a incredible depth of stage which brings the live element of the music totally to life in a way that I would have earlier thought impossible. The vocals are crisp yet smooth. The guitar has a great sense of scale and place and the sense of live performance is utterly shocking.
If you want to enjoy Janis like never before this disc is a must!
Trust me, you will not be disappointed.
A Real Surprise!.......2002-09-11
I have loved this album for over 40 years and while I have always thought the sound quality somewhat limited, I was looking forward to hearing this SACD version. Janis Joplin's raw power and passion always seemed to come out best in these tunes backed by Big Brother & The Holding Co. From the first listening, there was a depth and nuances never before heard in this recording. Each instrument shows more delineation, the soundstage shows greater depth and air, and there is more punch and firmer bass than I've ever experienced. Still not a true audiophile recording, but a grand improvement in a rock classic.
I highly recommend it to anyone who has an SACD player and loves this album. Since this is a multi-channel 5.1 reccording, I would imagine it would be an even greater revelation to someone who has a system to show it off.

Great Zappa intro...........2006-07-20
This gives you a pretty good idea about what Zappa is all about. I bought it because it was the cheapest of his discs. The guitar solo on Zomby Woof is worth the price alone. He is definitely one beeezare persona as this disk shows.
Vintage Zappa.......2006-07-02
I came to Zappa as a child when he was in his prime, and came back as an adult just as impressed with his clever ideas, musicianship and ideas. I love his sense of humor and irreverence. I have only owned two Zappa albums but will probably purchase more since listening to this one.
New to Zappa? Startin' here's okay..........2005-06-12
Any compilation in a storm, if it's put together w/ love and this one is. But if you're new to FZ's music this'll get ya goin' right nicely but then get your ears into the albums he himself made. AND check out the tribute albums by Jean-Luc Ponty, The Persuasions, Ensemble Modern...The FZ catalog is a rich American treasure.
A possibly misleading introduction.......2004-09-30
Frank Zappa's music covered a lot of topics and explored many themes musically. Over the years Zappa released countless albums, at one point even rereleasing identical copies of bootlegs in his "beat the boots" effort. His catalog of music is endless, so knowing where to start is difficult when approaching his music. Cheap Thrills was an attempt to induct the uninitiated. It is an one approached to his music, but most Zappa fans would call it incomplete and even misleading. Is it a good compilation? Yes, by all means, the live version of Joes Garage is especially good. But the problem is it does not paint a correct picture of Zappa overall, but I do not think a compilation can be made which accomplishes such. If you want to introduce yourself to Zappa I think you should start with one of the normal releases, not here. Pick up Joe's Garage or Hot Rats perhaps. This compilation is a curiosity, but will not expose you to the Zappa that fans know and love. But to those who already have an appreciation for Zappa there is merit in the collection, but not necessarily anything new you cannot find somewhere else in your collection.
Well this is not the best place to start with his music..........2003-12-13
This is not the best sample of his big range of styles and is also quite heterogonous, as for the presence of live songs and those ones from the studio...but it's so much cheap that it can be the first place to start with such a small but important extract from his unforgettable career...after this one you can buy the other official studio albums, also in the double CD-format!!
Not essential, but it's anyway interesting!!

All that is good about Rockabilly.......2003-10-28
If you love rockabilly you need this CD. If you don't love rockabilly listen to this CD and you will. Rockabilly represents all that is great in music, form great musicians to stripped down lyrics that make you tap your feet and sing along. Frantic Flattops have remained true to the genre, yet bring a new enough sound to not make you think, "oh I've heard this before". A important CD for anyone who loves rockabilly.
Flattops rock Rochester.......2000-01-04
My friend & I see the Flattops every time they're in Rochester year after year. This CD is the next best thing to hearing the songs live with their thumping bass and swingy beats. Absolutely love "Wake up, get up, get out".
Real Rockin' Rockabilly with a darker edge.......1999-08-31
The boys from Rochester NY have done it again. This album has it all: swinging melodies, thumping bass, woe-is-me lyrics, and lots of ink!!! Every song on here rocks, especially "Sweeter Seventeen", "Witch Doctor" and "Black Eye Blues". They tour a whole lot, so if you get a chance to see them- GO!!
Hard Hitting Sweaty Rockabilly.......1999-08-01
These boys cut through the waves of mediocre and formulated rockabilly by simply doing what they do best: Rocking like Hell. My only complaint is that I didn't run into this band earlier.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome blues!.......2005-08-22
This disc is one of the most stellar live compilation blues CD's released in a LONG LONG time. Everything about it says that Bott painstakingly labored over every aspect of this package -- especially the interesting stories that personalize each song, all the players, and the venues where many of the songs were recorded. If you are a fan of the blues, you'll be blown away by these tracks! Though the tracks are in fact from several different analog sources (mainly cassette tapes) kudos to Bott on having the courage to put out such diverse recordings. They show a true understanding of what 'the blues' is all about -- how live and improvised performances are integral to its tradition and history. If you are a real blues fan, then there is no way on earth this CD will let you down! That being said, fans of seriously good music played by exceptional musicians will also enjoy this CD.
If you like what has become the norm -- watered-down "slick" recordings with no soul, feeling or improvisation -- then don't buy this CD! But, if you want to step out of the box , take a journey side-stepping back in time to places where music was live and being created on the spot, then give this CD a listen. It promises to bring you into the very rooms where these performances went down. You'll feel as if you were there sipping a beer, downing a shot and cheering on the band with your friends by your side!
I want more .......2005-08-14
Throughout all his years of gigs drumming with Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers and most recently the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimi Bott, like so many other musicians, has a vast collection of his bootleg live performances. For this CD, Jimi has gone into his private collection for some of his finest vintage recordings. There are seven special moments with Mighty Flyers from 1987 to 1992 to accurately capture all the raw energy of that nightly West coast blues explosion. On the first song, he's nailing a sharp, double shuffle behind Rod's chromatic work on "The Eliminator." This is a brilliant reminder of how Rod starts off every show with high flyin', over the top energy. Bott's next song, "That's What You Do to Me," is a rare Mighty Flyer treat from 1987 with Junior Watson on guitar. This song comes from one of Bott's first gigs with the Flyers, a Battle of the Harmonicas in San Francisco. The crowd noise picked up by the tiny recorded adds to the authenticity.
No Flyer show was complete without Bott and Honey doin' a brilliant drum piano surge. Here, Jimi shares two of those moments. Instead of pressing songs we all know, Bott asked Honey for something unique and she responded with "The Bumble Boogie/The Nutcracker" medley. It's pure classical meets boogie woogie with an Alex Schultz guitar bridge holdin' it together. Bott and Honey recreate the big bands of the 1930's on Louis Prima's "Sing, Sing, Sing." And Alex Schultz's "Jam Up" is a favorite to be played over and over because it perfectly captures the spontaneity of the Mighty Flyers. the final Flyers' song ends the CD with the Piazza's deepest blues, "Ah'w Baby" from 1990. The two Fabulous Thunderbird tunes with Kim Wilson show off Bott's drums on the world-wide stage. He include his own song "Cheap Thrills" from 1996 with Kid Ramos, and another, "I'd Rather Be Blind, Crippled, and Crazy," from 2002 with Ramos and new T-Bird guitarist Kirk Fletcher. Bott's very personal liner notes offer intimate looks into the music and people that have shaped him. Remember that these songs were recorded live, so while there is no studio perfection, there is that live passion and energy we fans go out night after night to be part of. Can't wait for Vol. 2.
Live Jive R&B.......2005-06-08
Every one that has listened to it has ended up buying it, this is a whammin- jammim collection.
Skip It!.......2005-06-03
While I don't like to trash another musician's work, I must say in all honesty that this CD is neither worth the $16 or the two to three week wait. In hindsight, I wished I had heeded the warnings of "raw analog recordings" and "never before released tracks," Generally, those are code words for noisy, inconsistent and otherwise poor sound quality not otherwise suitable for release. In some instances, the quality of this CD is lower than some bootlegs. This CD fits the rule that if the songs are good enough to be released they would have been, long ago. The crowd's chatter and idle conversation during the performance are very audible and distracting. Moreover, the sound quality varies from track to track due in part to the fact that the CD picks up songs recorded at different times and in different places. Jim Bott, apparently needing a buck, lists his telephone number on the back as 1-800-BUY-MY-CD. I gave him $16. Don't make the same mistake.

Janis & Big Brother at Their Best.......2007-01-21
CHEAP THRILLS with JANIS JOPLIN is arguably the best Janis Joplin recording & a must for any CD library. This is the legendary singer at the top of that vocal force that wowed a generation. She was one of the few female rock singers who became a superstar in her own right. Unfortunately her tremendous ego and equally tremendous insecurity ultimately proved her down fall. Still she will never be forgotten.
Big Brother was a great rock band in their own right--and one can only speculate what could have happened if egos & commercialism hadn't driven the band & Joplin apart.
