Get it while you can.......2007-04-18
What the hell are you waiting for? This is SO GOOD!!! Who could conceive of a better career retrospective than to get together with the bands you've played with over the course of your life on your 50th birthday and not only recreating the sound and the intensity, but actually IMPROVING on it! This one's a no-brainer. Al's in great voice, all the muscians kick butt, and the sound is crystal-clear in your face. The only complaint is it's too short and there's no accompanying DVD. But it's also out of print, so you better get it while you can still afford it.
AN OPEN LETTER TO RHINO HANDMADE: A MASTERPIECE AWAITS!.......2006-07-22
If there were ever an artist and a specialty record label that were absolutely made for (and in dire need of) each other, well... herein lies the opportunity of a lifetime.
This fabulous and amazing 2CD set is only the tip of the iceberg for the amount of material that was played over six sets in three NYC nights in 1994.
Wouldn't it be great if an organization like Rhino's Handmade division worked with Al to produce a limited-edition COMPLETE set of all the shows?
When you listen to the incredible tracks on this set, and then you contemplate WHAT COULD BE...
Oh, baby, that's what (wet) musical dreams are made of.
If you agree, then go to rhinohandmade(dot)com and submit your two cents-worth under their "Suggestions" tab at the bottom of their home page.
A cup filled of dreams!.......2006-04-11
At the moment you decide by yourself a lofty list of the great exponents of the rhythm & blues, you will necessarily should take into account the name of Al Kooper. He literally provided of new enterprises and renovated vitality the reloaded atmosphere .He knew to blend the essential roots of the jazz, pop, rock, country, producing a new musical speech.
From those distant years in which he was part of the renowned ensemble Blood, Sweat and Tears, he reached by himself a special status level. Creativity, expression and feeling of a whole generation, avid for new sensations, in search of innovativeness.
The story of the Pop would be unfinished if we should not include his notable contributions with Mike Bloomfield, his support to raising promises like Shuggie Otis, and the composition of themes that remain underneath our epidermis and now are part of our musical memories, such Seasons of the Witch or I love you than you ever know.
That sudden return was a very appropriate pretext to rejoin the old masters of a relative brief past, to prove us there is still Kooper for a long time.
A remarkable album that you could easily and without any exaggeration should be among the five albums of the decade. The emotional burden, explosive outburst and creative flame still live in this man with soul: Al Kooper.
I have my most profound conviction that through the years, this will be considered a true historical recital, even though the elapsed time is too brief, but it's a personal presentiment.
Forty years in two hours.......2005-06-13
Quite aside from this 2 disk set surpassing the sound & production quality of any live offering I've heard, this is a superb effort by original Blues Project & BS&T members, plus the ReKooperators and guests.
There is only one way to listen to this album. Gather All Things Al aficionados, enjoy your favourite libation and enjoy.
It's all there; Super Session, You Can't Always Get...with a trombone instead of Al's french horn.
The only negative is that Steve Katz decided, apparently after the gig, that his guitar was not to be on the album. The negative is eliminated by Al's production artistry. Goodbye Katz and thanks to Jimmy Vivino & Oniviv Ymmij for helping make this offering a perfect overview of the best of the last 50 years of popular music.
Well Worth the Wait!.......2002-09-13
I've been looking for a copy of "Soul Of A Man" for quite some time having been a fan of Al's for almost 30 years. "Soul Of A Man" is outstanding. The music is excellent. It's one of the better "live" works I've ever heard. Al is an unappreciated gem. Hearing Jim Fielder on Bass, Randy Brecker, Lew Soloff, and Fred Lipsius doing BS&T material again is a treat. Danny Kalb has always been one of my favorite guitar players.
What a great CD!
