While the Yardbirds graduated three of the greatest guitarists in rock history--Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page--during their 1963-68 existence, the group's best work came during Beck's '65-'66 tenure, which produced nearly all their hit singles and virtually everything found here. (Notable exception: their debut hit, "For Your Love," which Clapton was barely audible on anyway.) From the cat scratch fever of "I'm A Man" to the guitar-as-weapon solo in "Mister, You're a Better Man Than I," Beck rewrote the lead guitar textbook, and on one of the few songs recorded when he and Page were in the band together--"Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"--they foreshadowed the sound of '70s rock. --Billy Altman

This is where the roots took hold.......2006-11-12
I was reading through the reviews I saw where someone called the Yardbirds 'leaning towards pop rock.....I am sorry but were you there in 64 cause I was and when I saw the Ybyrds at the Hulabaaloo on Sunset Blvd there was no Jimi, no Carlos, no Janice, Bealtles there were and Stones there were but put them in club with Ybyrds and you had no contest the Big Boys had singers and writers and genius but blazing ear-shattering blistering blues rock well like I said no contest. Clapton, Beck, Paige was it lucky chance? Not hardly it was the best seeking out the best. Get this CD and you hold the root structure and 'first fruits' of all we treasure today. I recently saw Velvet Revolver in S Fla and I was whipped back 40 yrs blazing searing ROCK great vocals freight train bass and drums but what I saw back then was in club of maybe 150. Own this CD as a show of graditute for those that gave us Hard Rock and remember we too have roots.
So, Cool.......2006-08-18
Being a huge fan of sixties music, I find this CD very appealing in terms of content, originality, and style. This group boasts three of thee greatest guitarists in the world; Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page. Their blues inspired wailings make this group stand out above other groups of the same era.
This music is gritty and raw and because the sound production wasn't really great on this particular album, it sounds a lot darker and moodier than maybe it's supposed to be. I'm not a musician and I have no idea about the technical aspects of music, but having been raised by a musician, I know in my soul how things should sound.
If you're looking to improve your music collection you really can't go wrong with this little gem. I know a lot of people gave it four stars and I'm not trying to disuade you from reading their reviews, but I really think (and feel) that if you want something loud, boisterous and completely cool, this CD is waiting for you.
Peace...
Yardbirds - 'Greatest Hit,Vol.1: 1964-1966' (Rhino/WEA).......2006-07-08
Total of eighteen tracks here, most fans should recognize these cuts, like "For Your Love","Evil Hearted You","Shapes Of Things",the boot stompin' "I'm A Man","I Ain't Got You","Got Love If You Want It" and so on.With all the Yardbirds compilation CD releases out there, this one is a pretty good pick,I thought.I realize there are certain tunes you likely remember that don't appear on this CD,but keep in mind, this is Vol.1.Semi-recommended.
Mother Lode for Second British Invasion.......2006-02-16
The Yardbirds were one of those great 'first British Invasion' groups whose primary claim to later fame is the fact that they provided the breeding ground for the stars of the 'second British invasion' lead by Cream, Traffic, and others. The thing which is so easy to forget is that groups like the Yardbirds, the Spenser Davis Group, Manfred Mann, Them, and the Graham Bond Organization were such fertile breeding grounds because their stuff was darn good itself.
I love it when I see contemporary commercials come up with songs from these great early bands, and listening to this album shows us just how important the Yardbirds were in their own right, not just as the launching pad for the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Paige.
This is an essential album for any survey of rock roots!
Good stuff .........2005-06-21
Will there be a volume 2? hard to tell with Rhino .. I hope they put "Over Under" on there ,and Jeff's Boogie .. which was left off the Raven compilation .

England's Yardbirds were often overlooked in favor of other bands from the heyday of the British Invasion, but their legacy has loomed large decades after their demise. After all, they fostered the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, and bands such as Renaissance, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Blind Faith, and the Jeff Beck Group. After cutting their teeth as faithful, if energetic, blues revivalists on live albums and a handful of singles, they cut this, their first real studio album, in 1966. Taking their cue from previous singles like the Gregorian-influenced "Still I'm Sad" and the future-shocker "Shapes of Things," the 'Birds produced what remains one of blues-rock's most progressive and distinctive albums--and one that, remarkably, was never initially released in the U.S. in its original form. Veering sharply from Beck's classic riffing on the rollicking "Over Under Sideways Down," the band explores broad palettes of style and hue, be it the more traditional blues of "Lost Woman," neomedieval turns ("Ever Since the World Began," "Turn into Earth"), strange psychedelia ("Hot House of Omagarashid"), or showcases for Beck's playful, pioneering fret work ("Jeff's Boogie"). As an added bonus, both sides of the band's sonically apocalyptic single "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"/"Psycho Daisies" (with the rare twin-lead guitar lineup of Beck and Jimmy Page) are also included. An album as enjoyable as it is historically influential. --Jerry McCulley

Yardbirds '66: Over Under Sideways Down.......2007-04-12
"Roger The Engineer" is the second album's worth of material recorded by the Yardbirds' second (and best) incarnation, which lasted from March 1965, when Jeff Beck replaced "blues purist" Eric Clapton, until October 1966 when Beck left suddenly. (Jimmy Page joined this lineup around June 1966, first as bass player and later - briefly - as co-lead guitarist with Beck). Musically the Y'birds made tremendous strides during this year-and-a-half, and reached their commercial peak with innovative hit singles such as "Heart Full Of Soul", "Shapes Of Things", "I'm A Man" and "Over Under Sideways Down" - the last was also the title of the original, truncated (10 tracks) US edition of "Roger" released by Epic back in 1966. The Yardbirds always had impressive chops, of course, but were still relying on outside songwriting help (Graham Gouldman, Mike Hugg, etc) until a decision was made to create an entirely self-contained effort, and "Roger" was their first and only album of all original material.
The resulting effort was an exciting and eclectic collection, and the band's finest album, highlighting the group's many strengths (sheer musical facility coupled with a willingness to experiment, the cohesion and self-awareness that comes with time spent as a working unit, and a capacity for pure visceral excitement) as well revealing those weaknesses that prevented the band from ever becoming a major "album band" in the US (inconsistency and lack of first rate songwriting talent on the order of Jagger/Richards, Lennon/McCartney, Ray Davies, Townshend, etc.) So, this album zips along quickly and quite enjoyably, with some hot blues pastiches, some solid, catchy, and witty rock/pop gems ("Rack My Mind", "He's Always There", and "Over Under Sideways Down") that are as inventive in terms of arrangement and production as they are brilliantly performed. On the other hand, we get the occasional campy moments of proto-Goth, an OK-but-hardly-essential Beck guitar feature, and a couple of merely mediocre tracks. Nevertheless, blast this loud and you can't help but feel that rush, the pure pleasure of a real band at the peak of its powers, as well as be impressed, knowing these guys spent roughly a week in the studio to craft the whole album. This midline priced 1997 Warner Archives edition includes the 10 songs from the American vinyl, plus the two that were spliced out, so we have the UK track lineup complete plus two spectacular bonus tracks, both featuring Page along with Beck: "Psycho Daisies" - with a sardonic vocal by Beck, it's a two minute jolt of fleet, pounding rock 'n' roll - and "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago", perhaps the most accomplished recording this band made, a hallucinatory, surreal sound collage amidst truly ferocious high-energy rock and roll (I mean, The Stooges stole that amazing main riff!) that still evokes the violence and dread of the '60s and will have any fan of great rock 'n' roll still sentient (such as my dog) jumping and dancing around the room. These two tracks are easily the equal of anything Led Zep created. Also exemplary, by the way, is Ted Jansen's remastering, which is spectacular. Of the fourteen tracks, all are in stereo except for "Daisies" and "Happenings", and, wisely, "House of Omagarashid". Unless you want both mono and stereo editions of the entire album, or Keith Relf's less than essential solo singles, this is the edition to own.
Must Have.......2007-02-10
This album is a must have everyone should own a copy of this amazing album. This CD is the begging of rock and roll. It is the greatest jazz album ever to have been written. Jeff Beck fans must own. Jimmy Page, and Led zeppelin fans must own. No doubt about it is the best Yardbirds album.
A GREAT record!.......2006-04-08
The Yardbirds were a fantastic band during all phases of their career. They are noted for having arguably the three greatest rock guitarist (Clapton, Beck, & Page) pass through their ranks and while this produced some great music, it also caused problems. Their first albums featured a Clapton and the blues vs. Beck and his experimentations dicotomy. Their last record featured the transition from Beck to Page and hard rock. This record is all Jeff and his fantastic, experimental guitar style. Every song on this record has his stamp on it, even "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" which has Page playing a second lead. "Lost Woman", "Over, Under, Sideways, Down", "Jeff's Boogie", etc. are all terrific. This recording is always with me on road trips and just listening to what Beck can do on the guitar helps make the trip easier. I love Clapton and his blues and I love Page and his hard rock but in my opinion, Jeff Beck is the best rock guitarist of them all. No one has challenged him yet.
Pretty cool.......2005-09-06
This is a pretty cool 60's rock album. A forgotten classic. Jeff Beck is one of the finest british rock guitarists of all-time, and on this album, he just shines, especially on "The Nazz Are Blue", on which he has the perfect tone. It's a diverse album, sometimes drifting on pure british blues, sometimes on psychedelia, simple british pop-rock with cool vocal harmonics, or plain hard rock, like "Psycho Daisies" which features Jeff Beck AND Jimmy Page. It's a great classic rock album, for those who have great taste not only in rock, but simply in music.
This album rocks.......2005-01-29
I must say that this album is one of rock's defining recordings. Known as "Over Under Sideways Down" in the U.S. Contains great blues styles as well as very psycadelic tunes. The track Over Under... Has a great opening riff,Jeff Beck is on fire throughout! "Jeff's Boogie" is surely an ass kicker. Rythym section is awesome and Keith Relf's vocals and harp are top notch playing. Truly one of the first Psychadelic bands. This a must for any collector!

With a tenure on the charts of barely five years, a fitful discography, and the erratic guidance of three managers during their prime, the Yardbirds have a legacy that is as unlikely as it is undeniable: they're second only to the Beatles as the most influential band of the 1960s. Long known as the musical divinity school of the Beck-Clapton-Page guitar trinity, the Yardbirds cast a much longer shadow across rock music, one that encompassed psychedelia, blues rock, heavy metal, jam bands, and even the nascent world music and alt-rock movements. Culled from a woefully meager recording history that includes a handful of singles and but two real studio albums (yet, strangely, three live collections), this double-disc anthology instantly becomes the single most comprehensive document of the band's brief reign and lasting influence. Eric Clapton's tenure with the energetic blues revivalists hardly hinted at enduring superstardom, but it did help foster the band's ambitious rave-ups, the frenzied mini-jams that became one of the Yardbirds' live trademarks and set the stage for Jeff Beck's groundbreaking two-year stint. But often overlooked in the homages to fret frenzy is the band's restless musical curiosity and the moody-cool, expressive charms of vocalist Keith Relf, explored here by the overtly Gregorian "Still I'm Sad," the sloppy, monkish "Hot House of Omagararshid," and the brooding "You're a Better Man Than I." But by the time Page signed on (briefly sharing duties with Beck), the Yardbirds shifted managers and directions, resulting in an uneasy cocktail of rock and pop that ultimately fractured the band, if not its heritage; Page would rebuild the New Yardbirds around an amped-up vision of its original blues roots, then quickly change the name to Led Zeppelin. All that ground is covered, along with some rarities (the odd Italian single "Questa Volta"/"Paff Bum" and three spotty solo tracks by Relf). Missing are session outtakes and live performances by the band's prime Beck-era lineup (see Live at the BBC). --Jerry McCulley

GET YOUR YARDBIRDS OUT!.......2007-05-29
It's a funny thing, that just about any rock and roller knows about The Yardbirds someway or another. Blues rock band from the sixties England that brought the light of not one, but three legendary guitarists. Clapton, Beck and Page respectively. But how much do you really know?
I heard their ripping version of TRAIN KEPT A ROLLIN' the other night for the first time on the radio and went out immediately and picked this set up. How awesome were The Yardbirds? Frikin' real, kid... I haven't stopped listening to this thing since I picked it up. The meatiest guitar sound out of any of the British Invasion bands, hands down! This is the perfect set, because it features virtually every Yardbirds recording out there (sans probably live stuff, and I'd guess BBC tracks) .. but the studio cuts are all here (and they're goods too, ... Yardbirds had some cool sound...)
Disc one covers the hey-day obviously. Clapton years had the most balls, I'd say. Heavy bluesers and doo-wap takes, HONEY IN THE HIPS, AINT GOT YOU, and Claptons GOOD MORNING LITTLE SCHOOL GIRL is probably the most rockin' version I can think of. Clapton is replaced by Jeff Beck, who enters on high note with the single HEART FULL OF SOUL, and during his tenure with the band really built up the sound.
Roger The Engineer from '66, which futher highlights the talents of Jeff Beck, contains a few goofy sixties pop tunes, but is actually all in good fun. And you will come to notice that even the goofiest lyrics don't matter much here, because the way the guitars work is killer. Nobody has ever put this much power into a three minute single before or since. My faves from this album are HE'S ALWAYS THERE, RACKIN MY MIND and LOST WOMAN. But get ready for the scorchin' late sixtie-six, early sixtie-seven line up that included both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page in the same line-up! Page's first single is easily identifieable as his HAPPENINGS TEN YEARS TIME AGO is like the prototype to Zeppelin II. Amazing!... Then the band even recorded a new version of TRAIN just so Page could sink his teeth in... Keith Relfs new lyrics are awful, but the licks blow me away!
Then theres the ultra rare '67 album Little Games. This is very hard to find these days, but must be heard, especially if you are a fan of Jimmy Page. This is the one with him in the drivers seat, and you can see where his Zeppelin roots are coming from on tunes like GOODNIGHT JOSEPHINE and the very Black Mountain-esque WHITE MOUNTAIN. Too bad Relfs lyrics really hit the fan on this one, and basically marked the end of The Yardbirds, before their next line-up change would turn them into Led Zeppelin... but still the guitar prowess injected into cheesy bubblegum tunes like PUZZLES is really something to behold.
In full, this is how to learn The Yardbirds, start to finish, for under thirty bucks. And if you are like me, you may want to put the speakers in the windows, let the Yardbirds out, and teach the whole neighborhood about 'em too! Some amazingly cool rock and roll!
THIS IS THE ULTIMATE YARDBIRDS COMPILATION........2007-03-04
I will be writing a review on the legendary two-CD set compilation album entitled "THE YARDBIRDS ULTIMATE" by one of Rock's greatest bands and one of England's pride and joy's. I give you THE YARDBIRDS. "THE YARDBIRDS ULTIMATE" was originally released in 2001 on a two Compact Disc set on the Rhino Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
THE YARDBIRDS will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for being the first great guitar supergroup of Rock n' Roll. Legendary guitarists such as Anthony Topham, Eric "Slowhand" Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page would have their humble beginnings with THE YARDBIRDS, then move on to bigger and greater things and earn the the title as "one of the great legendary guitarist's of all-time" status. When all these legendary guitar greats played with THE YARDBIRDS along side with lead vocalist and harmonica player Keith Relf, lead and rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja, drummer Jim McCarty and bassist Paul Samwell Smith, their own special blend of magical sound was destined for greatness. Please remember that THE YARDBIRDS was originally a Blues band in the very beginning. THE YARDBIRDS Blues influences were Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker and Willie Dixon. As one of the very first of the early British Blues bands, THE YARDBIRDS honed their chops backing and playing with visiting American Blues legends such as Sonny Boy Williamson. You can actually hear and feel the Blues sound and influence from the very get go of this legendary compilation album. THE YARDBIRDS musical career spans from 1963 to 1968. "THE YARDBIRDS ULTIMATE" is the result of all of their best legendary songs spanning from that period. Rhino Records also outdid themselves with the well packaged album by enclosing a special fifty-two page booklet documenting all the accounts throughout the whole history of THE YARDBIRDS. In my opinion, "THE YARDBIRDS ULTIMATE" is a true testament of the greatness and creativity that this band contributed to 60's British Blues music as well as Rock music in the 60's and beyond. "THE YARDBIRDS ULTIMATE" is also a very fitting tribute to a great band that was definitely ahead of its time.
Now its time to let the music do all of the talking. This two-CD set compilation album contains fifty-two songs in all. All I will say is if you really want to get into the Blues, listen to the songs on DISC ONE such as the John Lee Hooker classic "Boom Boom," the Blues Rocker "Honey In Your Hips," the Blues sounding "A Certain Girl," the Billy Boy Arnold classic "I Wish You Would," the legendary live Chuck Berry classic "Too Much Monkey Business," the legendary live Slim Harpo Blues classic "I've Got Love If You Want It," the legendary live Howlin' Wolf Blues classic "Smokestack Lightning," the legendary live fast paced Bo Diddley Blues classic "Here 'Tis," the pure Rock n' Roll and Bluesy "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl," the Blues Rocker "Got To Hurry," the Jimmy Reed classic Blues Rocker "I Ain't Got You," the forever trademark Yardbirds fast paced 60's Blues Rocker "For Your Love," the blistering groundbreaking Blues Rocker "I'm Not Talking," the breathtaking slow killer Blues number "Steeled Blues," the soulful heartfelt Blues number "Heart Full Of Soul," the a*s kicking Blues Rocker "I Ain't Done Wrong," the Blues Rock classic "You're A Better Man Than I," the forever trademark Yardbirds Blues Rock classic "Shapes Of Things," the forever familiar Tiny Bradshaw Blues Rock classic "The Train Kept A-Rollin'," the legendary pure slow Blues number "New York City Blues," the legendary slow Blues classic Rocker "Evil Hearted You," the blistering merciless Bo Diddley Blues Rocker "I'm A Man," the mysterious haunting slow Rocker "Still I'm Sad," the heartfelt pop Rocker "Questa Volta" and the incredible pop Rocker "Pafff...Bum." END OF DISC ONE.
On DISC TWO, you will hear the Blues Rockers such as the blistering "Lost Woman," the Blues Rocker "Over Under Sideways Down," the blistering groundbreaking classic Blues Rocker "The Nazz Are Blue," the mellow soulful Rocker "I Can't Make Your Way," the killer merciless Blues Rocker "Rack My Mind," the mindblowing simple Rocker "Hot House Od Omagararshid," the incredible and amazing Blues Rocker "Jeff's Boogie," the groundbreaking Rocker "He's Always There," the mystical sounding slow Rocker "Turn Into Earth," the charismatic Rocker "What Do You Want," the blistering Yardbirds trademark Rocker "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago," the breathtaking Blues Rocker "Psycho Daisies," the mindblowing Rocker from the film Blow-up "Stroll On," the legendary Rocker "Little Games," the beautiful mellow Rocker "Puzzles," the Jimmy Page trademark acoustic number that would move forward into the legendary band Led Zeppelin "White Summer," the breathtaking killer Rocker "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor," the ultimate Yardbirds Rocker "No Excess Baggage," the blues Rocker "Drinking Muddy Water," the slow beautiful and mysterious acoustic number "Only The Black Rose," the incredible different sounding Rocker "Ten Little Indians," the humorous circus like atmosphere Rocker "Ha Ha Said The Clown," the ultimate acoustic electrifying Rocker "Goodnight Sweet Josephine," the electrifying Rocker "Think About It," the slow beautiful Keith Relf solo number "Knowing," the slow acoustic "Mr. Zero" and the mind teasing Rocker "Shapes In My Mind." END OF DISC TWO. The guitar playing by all three guitar legends were superb and contributed some of the greatest guitar riffs in Rock n' Roll history. Keith Relf's haunting lead vocals sounded so mysterious that he could have scared the whole audience into submission. History or legend has it that Keith Relf sang all of THE YARDBIRDS songs with only one lung.
Overall, this legendary compilation album is worth seeking and checking into especially if you are deep into the Blues.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album has definitely proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. "THE YARDBIRDS ULTIMATE" is part of Rock n' Roll history, when you hear this album, you will know exactly what I mean.
In closing, THE YARDBIRDS would break up in 1968 but would not spell the end of THE YARDBIRDS legend and legacy. Jimmy Page would move on and recruit fellow musicians Robert Plant on lead vocals, John Paul Jones on bass and the blistering wild mad drummer John Bonham to form the legendary and one of the greatest bands in Rock n' Roll history, THE NEW YARDBIRDS A.K.A the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. Eric "Slowhand" Clapton would move on to play for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and the greatest legendary three-man band of all-time, CREAM. Clapton would also enjoy a very successful solo career which has endured to this very day. Jeff Beck on the other hand has enjoyed success and fame in the band THE JEFF BECK GROUP with Rod Stewart and a successful solo career which has included Rod Stewart. Yardbirds lead singer and frontman Keith Relf would enjoy some success in the 70's until his untimely death in 1976. Relf, unfortunately was killed instantly when he was electrocuted by his electric guitar. Drummer Jim McCarty, guitar and bass player Chris Dreja and bassist Paul Samwell Smith have had YARDBIRDS reunions with some of the remaining members to highly critical acclaim. THE YARDBIRDS have left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. THE YARDBIRDS received the highest ultimate honor of being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. So here's to you late great Keith, Anthony, Eric, Jeff, Jimmy, Paul, Chris and Jim M. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE YARDBIRDS FOREVER. R.I.P. KEITH RELF, Born 22 March 1943, Died 14 May 1976 at age 33. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
Here 'Tis!! Ultimate Yardbirds!!!.......2006-10-18
If you ever wondered how was it that Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and/or Jimmy Page started, this record is a must for you. Indeed, this is THE band that holds the distinction of unleashing the guitar prowess of these 3 fine gentlemen. But this release is so much more than a british rock trivia book! Sure, the reason why i got this in the first place is because I wanted to know the band where 3 of the most influential rock guitar players of all time got their beginnings.
But in the process, i discovered a great band, which produced awesome music and served as an important part in the evolution of (guitar-oriented) rock, among other musical genres. More importantly, this compilation is THE ONLY one to feature music from all of the band's career, along with a few extra nuggets. Where the Beatles had more of a teenage appeal, the Stones had a working man charm, and The Who had a deeper intent than just moving your feet, the Yardbirds combined a little of all those things, while also adding something all of their own: a ferocious guitar attack that foretold the style of later bands such as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and/or Led Zeppelin, and even american bands such as Aerosmith and/or Alice Cooper.
The band's career can be clearly divided in 3 periods, one for each of its lead guitar players: the first one featured the basic axis of the band, comprised of singer Keith Relf, guitarist Chris Dreja and drummer Jim Mccarthy, along with original bass player Paul Samwell-Smith. They formed the band right in the middle of the explosion of the british blues scene of the early 60's. Their first classic line-up was completed with the addition of Clapton, and the band rose to prominence playing inspired renditions of american blues and R&B staples, while occasionally backing american musicians such as Sonny Boy Williamson, honing their skills as a competent blues band along the way. But when the band made their definitive claim for fame with the release of the pop single "For Your Love", they alienated Clapton, who would exit the group shortly after the success of the aforementioned single.
Enter Jeff Beck: a highly experimental and creative guitarist who, unlike his predecessor, was more than willing to explore the possibilities of music in general, fusing elements of folk, jazz, blues, and pop and take the band to the next level of success. Beck's tenure in the band is generally perceived as the most productive period in their career, and while such a statement remains open for debate, there is little doubt that the band enjoyed their peak of popularity during this period, with songs such as "Heart full of Soul" and "Still I'm Sad" leaving a mark in pop/rock evolution. After the exit of Paul Samwell-Smith, Jimmy Page entered The Yardbirds, originally playing...bass!!! Eventually, Dreja took up the 4 strings, leaving Beck and Page to lead the band.
Unfortunately, this configuration was rather short lived and produced only a couple of tracks, but the good news is that those tracks are killer and are included here ("Stroll On", a brutal remake of their staple "Train Kept a Rollin'", and the rather psychedelic "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago") !!! Finally, the band's last period features Page as the leader of the band, reduced to a quartet after Beck's departure. Chart success notwithstanding, this line-up produced a lot of great music, much of which is included here. Personally, some of my favorite Yardbirds songs come from this incarnation of the band, such as "No excess baggage", "Little Games", "Puzzles" and "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor".
Each of the 3 periods and the 3 guitarist in the band's history can be better summed up with 3 instrumental tracks included here: Clapton's deep love for the purest blues as exemplified in "Got to Hurry"; Beck's fusion excursions on "Jeff's Boogie"; and finally Page's penchant for the psychedelic and the exotic in "White Summer". This tendency would later reach new heights in Led Zeppelin, a band that was born from ashes of The Yardbirs, where Page could freely indulge in all the things that he loved. The Yardbirds were born as a british blues band, later evolved into a highly experimental and influential rock band, and ended up as a proto-hard rock band.
If you ever wondered where the link between early british invasion and hard rock was, this collection will answer that question for you. This is by far the best, most comprehensive Yardbirds compilation available, spanning their full career and featuring a grand total of 52 songs. You actually get 3 Keith Relf singles, which are a nice addition to the pack. One can argue that other songs could have been included instead, but I personally don't mind their inclusion at all. This is a must for anyone who loves late 60's rock, and I would recommend it to ANYONE who simply loves good rock and good music in general. Here 'Tis: Yardmerizing, Birdmerizing, in fact, most blues walling, Yardbirds!!! Get it!!
Quite simply an amazing collection.......2006-07-20
OK it may not be flawless but it could have been a hell of a lot worse. The live tracks could've been negotiated better, I'll grant that but I still find it fascinating. There's plenty on here to marvel about. I don't think I can add much to what's been already said but it's definitely the definitive collection to get into The Yardbirds. A worthwhile purchase
Ultimate Yardbirds indeed.......2005-10-18
This set has every thing you'd want from the Yardbirds in one neat collection. Until this collection was released it was hard to say what album to pick up. There are so many good songs that you want, but at the same time you would start buying all these albums that had the same recordings on it just to get a few songs you didn't have yet. Sure there are some songs missing that every fan would have liked to have on here. Here's what I believe the makers of Yardbirds Ultimate set out to do and why I gave it five stars. I believe Rhino has set out to document the entire history of The Yardbirds both visaully and most importantly aurally and given the media and space available they do an incredible job of it. Due to legal reasons it has been difficult to capture the entire span of their career from the Clapton era all the way to the Page erea. Rhino has been the first to get the go ahead to do so and it has never sounded better. Rhino has taken the time to remaster all of the original tapes and have put the best sounding representations on these discs. When I compare the sound to my older albums the results are staggering. The other great thing is in the packaging and booklet. You'll find incredible photos and a booklet that documents both the rise and the sputtering conclusion of this incredible group. It's all in here and I recommend this to anyone that wants to hear some good mod era rock and roll at its finest.

essential.......2006-02-24
if, like me , you realize how the 60's were like no other time, and the window has closed, this is an album full of songs that opens that window on the best era of music to come along scince the classical time. the yardbirds defined a type/style of the time. blues, rock, and psychedelic swirling around in one grand mix to create a unique stew. jeff beck shines on this album, as does the entire group. if at first listen, it sounds dated, give it a little time. it's raw and full simultaneously. if you are into the 60's, this is essential.
ESSENTIAL YARDBIRDS--INDISPENSIBLE !.......2004-12-27
Don't be fooled by the fact that this CD is packaged under the US title of the LP which is commonly known as "Roger the Engineer": this is, bar none, THE best reissue of this indispensible Yardbirds set. Repertoire has always had a reputation for quality, and this CD is another example of that sterling reputation. What they have done is give us BOTH the US and UK covers! Great idea! The original Chris Dreja cover is reproduced on the inside booklet, with a nice essay on the genesis of the LP and the tracks contained therein. As to those tracks: nothing more need be said about how good this album is. Critical essays abound everywhere, so check 'em out. The main thing that makes this reissue the BEST are the TEN, count 'em, TEN bonus trax! "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Jeff's Boogie" in their original 45 Mono mixes; the non-LP single "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" and "Psycho Daisies" in Stereo; the alternate take of "Hot House..." which was issued on the Mono UK edition of "Roger"; and FIVE Keith Relf solo trax! Here goes: "Mr. Zero" and "Knowing", both sides of his first Columbia UK 45; "Shapes In My Mind" and "Blue Sands", his second Columbia UK 45; and, finally, a previously unreleased alternate version of "Shapes In My Mind". Outstanding! THIS IS THE ONE TO BUY ! Thank you to Repertoire for another great, well thought out reissue!
A 1966 Milestone.......2004-06-03
"Over, Under, Sideways, Down" or "The Yardbirds" or "Roger the Engineer" was the Yardbirds` first real album released in 1966. They had released two albums in America in 1965 "For Your Love" and "Having a Rave Up", but they were merely a compilations of singles, EP`s , live-recordings or obscure recording which were included to fill up the albums to reach an acceptable playing-time.
For the first time they were given the opportunity to record a real album. The were not given unlimited studio-time; on the contrary; the album was recorded during a very short time-period; I believe it was about 2 weeks. This makes the result even more impressive. It`s no exaggeration to call this album one a the greatest of the mid-sixties. Very tight playing by everyone, impressive and innovative guitar-work from Jeff Beck, solid vocals and great songs.
In my opinion there is no doubt that it`s Jeff Beck who makes the difference. I love the sounds he can get out of his guitar. It`s not difficult to imagine how he stunned people listening to his guitar back in 66. The great mixture of traditional blues and the new psychedelic sounds has never been surpassed.
Even classic 12 bar blues tracks like "Lost Woman","Over, Under, Sideways, Down", "The Nazz Are Blue", "Rack My Mind", "Jeff`s Boogie" and "What Do You Want" sounded (sounds) new; and these recordings still sound uplifting and full of energy today.
On songs like "Ever Since The World Began", "Turn Into Earth", "Hot House" and "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" showed a purer progressive side of the band. In fact "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" was not originally included on the album, as it was recorded shortly after, at a time when Jimmy Page had also joined the group. "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" was released as a single with "Psycho Daisies" as the b-side. These two songs have been featured on most re-releases of the album, and can almost be considered as originals. The moving "Farewell" is a another favourite; makes you think of the sad destiny of Keith Relf who died electrocuted in 1976 by his own guitar while practising at his home.
Unfortunately this 2 lead-guitarist period would last very short, as Jeff Beck soon left. As far as I know, they only recorded 3 songs; with "Stroll On" from the movie "Blow Up" as the third.
The bonus tracks make the CD an even better buy. The Keith Relf solo tracks a all solid; in fact they are really the Yardbirds backing singer Relf. "Mr Zero" is not far from later Yardbirds recordings like "Little Soldier Boy".
If you`re even the least interested in the music that came out of the 1960`s this milestone is a must buy!
Lost Woman, Rack My Mind y What Do You Want son 3 poderosos temas con un Beck brillante disparando furiosos acordes y riffs, en tanto Over, Under, Sideways, Down explora sonoridades más lejanas.
EPIC LP BN 26246 Original U.S. release.......2003-04-25
The original EPIC vinyl LP has the original 10 tracks. Most of the 20 + CD tracks are a RAID into the YardbiRds Gomelskey catalog. I'd say that 'there are too many extra song tracks'. If you like original YardbiRds, try 'Roger The Engineer', and the 'RHINO' 2CD Ultimate Collection. Both CDs' should be available here at amazon.com. Many tracks are 'Re-channeled'STEREO, In 1963-64 most Yardbirds and Rolling Stones tracks were recorded in natural mono.
I usually rate the YardbiRds HIGH, their innovations still sound great, even now, 30 + years after their original release dates! I'd say 'Buy' this CD.

Eric Clapton's first live album since 1992's zeitgeist-capturing Unplugged, is, as one would expect, full of well-tailored highlights from his back-catalog of bristly, well-kept blues. Recorded in Los Angeles and Tokyo during his 2001 world tour, and featuring the accompaniment from the likes of Andy Fairweather-Low and Billy Preston, it's an album that serves to satisfy both Clapton purists (there's a four-song sequence of tracks from Pilgrim, shorn of their original anodyne synthesizer embellishments) and adult pop fans who prefer their blues from the decanter rather than the bottle ("Tears in Heaven," a sublime "Bell Bottom Blues," a rather poised, applause-riddled "Layla"). One More Car is an engaging live document that finds EC far from asleep at the wheel. --Kevin Maidment

A Must have 2disc Live Album!!!!!.......2007-03-31
This is one of the best live cd's I've ever listned to!
All the songs sound really tight, You can close your eyes and imagine your in the same room with Clapton.
The guitar work is second to know. Mr. Clapton's voice sounds so relaxed and soulful
If you love classic rock. I highly recommend this great set from one of the best Modern guitarist who ever lived!
9.7/10
This is one of the Best Rock Albums of the Modern Rock Era.......2007-02-16
I am not an Eric Clapton fan. In fact I find him boring; but this is different. A friend of mine had this thing - and I asked who the hell it was. Eric Clapton - What, I said. This has got to be one of the hottest albums of recent times. Brings together old-style rock 'n' roll and the refinement of TV appearances with those super-polished studio drummers and bassists.
A burst of energy!
The video's exceptional too.
Retire Already!.......2006-12-19
Eric Clapton = Most overrated popular musician of the 20th century, and this album only cements that fact. Haven't you sucked the life out of Robert Johnson enough?
Just plain flat and awful.......2006-10-08
Two stars because it's EC. However, i kept waiting for this to get some heart and soul and it never happened. I have no problem with Eric finishing off with Somewhere over the rainbow, but I thought he was going to finish it off with a gut wrenching searing solo, ala "Ain't nobody's business..." but he never did. I like to think of this as "Eric Plays the Holiday Inn, Altoona PA"
great Clapton!.......2006-02-25
This album is between the "very best" of Clapton! There are just 2songs "weaks", Tears in Heaven and change the world, but all the other 18 songs......are powerful and superb! One more car, one more rider....is a must for a eric Clapton fan!

Ultimately a disappointment.......2007-06-14
The Yardbirds were a fine group of musicians but in my opinion, only the covers hold up well. Their own song writing is dated. But I bought this collection for one reason only and write this review for one reason only. I bought it for their rip-roaring version of I'm a Man and write this review to vent and to warn prospective buyers that the ultra-hard rockin' I'm a Man, the one that remains a staple on oldies stations, has been replaced by some lame version I'd never heard before. A pox on it!
A decent collection, but note this error in the track listing!!.......2007-03-11
The last track on disc 2 is NOT "Stroll On" as claimed on the package contents. The real "Stroll On" was recorded for the movie "Blow Up" and is a different version of "Train 'Kept A Rollin'" with revised lyrics. The track called "Stroll On" featured in this collection is actually a studio take of "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" without vocals.
The Yardbirds.......2006-03-03
I like the oldies and the Yardbirds were a good addition to my collection.
WHERE IS ROGER THE ENGINEER?.......2005-06-06
Good overview of the group until 1966,but i don't know why they did not include tracks from their only studio classic:ROGER THE ENGINEER.Live tracks showcase ERIC CLAPTON's talent. You get the story alright with a missing spot;not an ordinary one because we are talking about a certain guy called JIMMY PAGE.EVIL HEARTED YOU remains my favorite YARDBIRD song;that guitar sound of the sixties wow!So, if you never heard the group, you should buy THE ULTIMATE(without COLLECTION),you will have the perfect anthology.
Great Clapton/Beck Comp.......2003-02-15
This one has all of the pre-Page Clapton/Beck stuff you'd want. However, if you're not a fan of mono recordings you might want to skip this one. Most of the tracks are in that form. The booklet gives a nice, concise history of the band. No other pics than the one that's on the cover, though.

FANTASTIC! RAW! PRE - ZEPPELIN PAGE LIVE!.......2007-07-12
I have a copy of this entire show on a Yardbirds rare tracks disc. My brother bought this on LP back in the 70's and I am pretty sure this recording is a bootleg and a very famous one, but it's still a "boot". I remember Page not liking this release much, stating that some of the crowd noises were added. Page said "the crowd cheers could have been lifted from a bull fight for all I know" It's funny because before I read that, I would imagine the crowd going wild as it does sound that way! The album starts off with an excellent version of "A Train Kept A Rollin'" a jamming version of "Mister You're A Better Man Than I" that goes right into a pumped up version of "Heart Full Of Soul" There is a song called "I'm Confused" which would later be re-worked for Led Zeppelin's first album as "Dazed and Confused". The set is really interesting and I'm glad I have it. If you can find it, it buy it! It is one hell of a good performance and the recording is pretty damn good. Please remember it was a "boot", so the sound quality is very good, but not perfect(a little tinny). Well worth hearing and owning!
START LOOKING!.......2007-06-13
This album gives me the chills. When you listen to it alongside early Yardbirds stuff and compare, it sounds like the devil crept in and tore the band to shreds in one final amazing last frenzy...and the crowds on this final tour must have flipped their tops (this could easily fit in with the popular legend that Jimmy Page once sold his soul to the devil to play guitar!) The sound is that of a band that once was once something, but was about to become nothing... How did it happen? Jimmy Page joined The Yardbirds quietly about a year and half earlier as a replacement on bass. Within that time he had risen to second lead, and then took over Jeff Becks aclaimed role as lead guitarist. By listening to this show, it is obvious that he was about to chew right through this band entirely! Here endeth the Yardbirds. It is amazing to witness though, and actually a show worthy of its legend. Too bad this album is so rare.
Listen to the early take of Dazed and Confused as a Yardbirds song (I'M CONFUSED is the actual title here, but you will no doubt recognize the guitar work) Keith Relf almost sounds like he is literally (a little scared and) confused as to what his role as lead vocalist has come down to.. lyrically he has a hard time keeping up with Pages continuosly building sound... and he sings "I'm starting to crack, if your trying to break me, you're on the right track!" I feel like he's singing it to Page.... However still Relf shines as a master of the harp... numerous times throughout this perfomance, when he's in doubt, he just blows the harp. And its intense sometimes over these raw Page riffs. No doubt in my mind that Robert Plant studied Relfs harp section on Dazed rather than his vocals when he took over later on. The famous Plant wails in the ZepI version vs. Relfs haunting chords on this, compare.
I will tell you this. At some point in your life you need to get your hands on this album and soak it up. Especially if you are a fan of early Zep or The Yardbirds in general... which, who isn't; and, well you damned should be. Jimmy Page has done everything in his power to keep this album underground for whatever reason or another. Epic first released it in the early seventies and it lasted about three years before Page finally battled it into the dirt. In 1992 Epic tried once again to release it on CD (the version found here) and it lasted on the shelves for a matter of weeks before Page banished it again. Whats he got to hide here... the set is stellar. Sort of makes you think a little bit, no?
There are some minor flaws. For one thing, I guess Epic thought the album didn't sound live enough? And they added in additional crowd noise (boneheads.) Secondly the sound quality is just a par above bootleg standards... however I happen to love the way the record sounds ( I own the vinyl myself, and I know nothing about the bonus tracks on this featured version) this record has a very dark and mysterious quality to it... the vocals sound like old time forties radio, but Pages guitar is on fire... fresher than Zep even at spots. The songs are just flat out ROCK! TRAIN and the twelve minute I'M A MAN?! Are you kidding me? And OVER-UNDER... crunches, man.
Trust me, seek this album out like the grail.
Smokin' Pagey.......2007-04-25
I was lucky enough to get this from amazon a few years back before Mr.Page ONCE AGAIN killed it with legal injunctions.I see his point. The canned cheering, crappy recording and Keith Relf singing flat for a hour is a bit much. Why the 5 stars then? Jimmy Page sounds great. The Telecaster/Vox combo is stunning and he seldom reached this level of tone again even in Zeppelins best moments.Grab this and enjoy a great guitarist while he was young and fresh.
Yardbirds - 'Live Yardbirds! Featuring Jimmy Page' .......2006-05-15
Wow!Cannot even believe this rare(most of the time)and hard to find CD is even available on Amazon.I've heard there were two versions of this title available.A bootleg CD and a legit pressing.Believe the legit release has eleven tracks and the bootleg has just nine.Really very good sound quality,SPECIALLY for the time this show was recorded,on March 30,1968 in New York's lower east side's Anderson Theater.Tunes that will have you playing this disc over until you wear it out are "The Train Kept A Rollin'","I'm Confused",the ultimate late '60's boot-stomper of all time "Over Under Sideways Down",the bluesy "Drinking Muddy Water",Jimmy Page's stellar instrumental "White Summer" and the 12-minute awesome "I'm A Man".An ABSOLUTE must-have.A true keeper.Highly recommended. You get the point.
JIMMY PAGE RISES FROM THE ASHES OF THE YARDBIRDS.......2006-02-14
THANK YOU AMAZON. I HAVE WAITED DECADES TO GET THIS CD.
I owned the original vinyl LP of this set back in 1977. I paid
around $35 dollars for it back then. The Yardbirds had it pulled
from release due to the company dubbing in fake crowd noises, bull
fight cheering and the clinking of cocktail glasses according to
Jimmy Page. Those in the audience witnessed the birth of Led
Zeppelin and the implosion of the Yardbirds on this night. J.Page was unknown to an american crowd and unleased his guitar
fury on this tour. Jimmy Page had played bass on the Yardbirds
previous tour which showcased Jeff Beck, and rightfully so.
Singer Keith Relf had a hard time matching Jimmy Page's guitar solos and power cords, which dominated their sound. You
can hear Jimmy using wah-wah pedal, fuzztone, and even a string-
bow on the early version of Dazed and Confused with different
lyrics. My LP labeled the song as Im So Confused.
Songs of interest are Dazed and Confused, a blueprint for the great Zeppelin epic to come, White Summer, which appeared in early Zeppelin live sets. Drinking Muddy Water, which was the
other song played from their album Little Games- it is very similar to Train Kept A Rollin. From the shadows of the stage
that night, Jimmy Page roared through the Jeff Beck Classics-
Heart Full of Soul,Over Under Sideways Down,I'm a Man,and Shapes of Things. The other band members wisely let him take the stagefront. Followers of early Led Zeppelin might
be interested in this CD. Zeppelin arose from the ashes of The
Yardbirds and this music served notice of things to come.
I recommend Yardbirds ... Where the Action is, with the second disc- Jimmy Page with the birds at Stockholm 1967. This
set includes Shapes of Things and Little Games. Especially if you
can't find Live At The Anderson Theatre with Jimmy Page. I also
recommend the band Armageddon, self titled, which rocks to the
singing of the late Keith Relf, the voice of the Yardbirds.

Yardbirds as great as ever!.......2007-07-02
I would tell any fan of rock and roll to pick this CD up. There are some great classic songs on it - For Your Love, Shapes of Things, Train Kept A'Rollin...
The band features a smokin' harmonica player and no surprise... an amazing guitarist!
The audio of the live recordings is good and the energy of the band and audience is captured well.
If you are familiar with the Yardbirds music, you will enjoy this CD. However as I said at the beginning, any fan of great rock and roll can dig this one!!
