A Terrific -- if Somewhat Misleading -- Place to Start.......2006-01-02
I got on the Blooze Bandwagon (along with Elton & Bernie & Gus Dudgeon doing "Funeral for a Friend" on "Yellow Brick Road" and other assorted flights of fanstasy) a day or two after I'd taken the THC plunge with so many others in 1973.
The Golden Era ('67 to '72) had come and gone, but the legacy of the Moodies' "Big Seven" was Big Time Entertainment in the "head set" of the time. As well as much cause for discussion: The music -was- terrific, but so were the lyrics (see my review of "To Our Children's Children's Children" elsewhere). The more literate folks -- including many in the entertainment industry -- on LA's West Side were as busy dissecting them for meaning as the folks on -Manhattan's- (upper) West Side. "God was Speaking to Us," we all just knew, "and these guys are His Prophets."
If ANARR has a flaw, it's that the lyrics (and the songs) that drove us into a spiritual frenzy in those days are largely missing from what is an otherwise -super- collection. I'll forgive it myself, largely on the strength of having seen the same show on a tennis court in Indian Wells in 1994 when I really -needed- a major distraction. They delivered then as they do on this terrific double album, combining at least some of symphonic hits that established them as The Real Deal (after establishing a "pop" rep in the mid-'60s) with the MTV-era hits in the '80s, all of which are Just Fine, Thank You.
As suggested vis Pink Floyd's "Delicate Sound of Thunder" on -that- Amazon page, if you're going to take a flyer at this band, -this- album is as good a place to start as any, at least to get a taste for the -music-. But -do- bear in mind that the -poetry- that made them cult icons in the Grand Days of Psychedelia is elsewhere, specifically on "TOCCC," "On the Threshhold of a Dream," "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor" and "A Question of Balance." If the names Rogers, Perls, Neitsche, Hesse, Poe, Casteneda, Bradshaw, Miller, Krishna Murti, Si Baba and Ram Dass ring any bells for you, those lyrics will paint some real pretty pictures.
The Best Christmas of 2005.......2005-12-29
I am a 19 year old hooked on the Moody Blues (ironic isn't it??). Back in my early years, my mother got me hooked on the Moody Blues because we both saw the "A Night at Red Rocks" concert (which I bought on DVD before asking for the Deluxe Edition) on PBS during a donation drive. From then on, I have been a fan of the Moody Blues. My mom originally owns the single disc version of this concert on CD with less tracks than the Deluxe Edition, and let me just say I borrowed it for a long period of time. So for Christmas 2005, I asked for the Deluxe Edition of the concert, and I couldn't be more happier. This CD has the entire concert that took place on that thursday evening in September back in 1992. It is digitally remastered and even has dialogue between the music. I am right now on the fourth time of listening to the CD on my DiscMan. For the record, also, my mother was happy because after I opened this gift I went upstairs to my room, brought down her gift, and said "Merry Christmas, Mother, here is your CD." Unfortunately, she is raging with jealousy since my CD has more tracks on it.
The Best Live Moody Blues Album.......2005-04-25
A NIGHT AT RED ROCKS WITH THE COLORADO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is an exceptional Moody Blues live album that shreds CAUGHT LIVE+5 for two reasons. First of all, the earlier live album had actually been cut in 1969, when the band was high on drugs and/or drunk. Secondly, G-d created Red Rocks Ampitheater with excellent acoustics, so you can hear each instrument on its own AND as part of the whole group. The songs are all acknowledged classics, and this setting shows how Justin Hayward's, John Lodge's, and Ray Thomas's voices have deepened and matured over the years. This album is an important addition to any Moody Blues collection.
To be my Moody Blues CD.......2004-02-16
When I was much younger, indulging in whatever I considered to be neat then, I thought of the Moody Blues as having a "message." Just a few years after that, I tired of my older brother and his friends talking of these messages, as if there was something deep and profound to be learned from the music. At the time, I still liked the classic/rock mix, known by an English acquaintance as "prog rock."
Then, while living overseas in a former British colony, I picked up a British rock encyclopedia. It's somewhat limited, leaves out many of the pop/rock bands that have gone by the wayside after their heyday was over. But under the Moody Blues in the book, the author(s) seemed to think that the MBs made it more in the US than in the UK, that people tired of their "cosmic messages." That struck a (lost?) chord with me.
Since then, I talked with a member of the National Symphony who once backed the MBs. He said the orchestra was merely a stage prop, that nothing they played could be heard (and that the MB's management particularly was arrogant and obnoxious.
Well, onto the music.
Yeah, some of it is okay in terms of melody. If I were into dancing--which I'm not--I wouldn't enjoy it. But, yeah, I can hum along. But I can only picture the orchestra, brilliant musicians, overshadowed by the pseudo-deep pop stars.
In short, if you like their music, this is the one I'd get for people who, when they're at your house, ask if you have any Moody Blues. I doubt, though, that I'll get any more. There's variety, tunes from a number of their albums without too much fluff. It even sounds like a show I may have liked to attend, though, I'm not much for rock concerts, let along "prog rock." But this'll do. Enjoy it for when the MBs have another reunion--bound to happen until they turn 70.
Beats Them All For Live Sound.......2004-01-23
It's not too difficult to choose which of the three `live' Moody Blues albums to buy. "Caught Live" is a recording mess actually from a 1968 performance and the latest, "Hall Of Fame" has too many rough points to really impress. This "full" concert from Red Rocks is unmatched by many live recordings, especially now that it has been remastered to near perfect quality. You can actually hear the difference between the original CD recording and this remastered version - it's that good.
The song selection is standard (or classic) Moody Blues, but the Colorado Symphony adds so much more ambiance. It is not a perfect orchestra, which makes it all the more appealing with a rock band. The booklet contains great information with photos and a thoughtful essay. The DVD makes a nice companion piece, but the sound through a set of headphones is mesmerizing. The only drawback might be the songs from, "Keys To The Kingdom", but that's not much to complain about.

"Sound & Visions" series - Great Invention!.......2005-10-29
It's not too difficult to choose which of the three `live' Moody Blues albums (or series in this case) to buy. "Caught Live" is a recording mess actually from a 1968 performance and the latest, "Hall Of Fame" has too many rough points to really impress. This "full" concert from Red Rocks is unmatched by many live recordings, especially now that it has been remastered to near perfect quality. The song selection is standard (or classic) Moody Blues, but the Colorado Symphony adds so much more ambiance. It is not a perfect orchestra, which makes it all the more appealing with a rock band. The booklet contains great information with plenty of photos and a thorough essay. Two of the discs contain 23 songs - the full concert and the DVD displays the show with 19 songs. This "SOund & Vision" series is a great idea for the true fan and the ultimate audiophile.
What a great place to see a concert........2005-08-22
I put off purchasing this album for some time. I have replaced all of my albums with CD's now. If you forgot Albums were made of Vinyl at one time and I have many of there albums and use a B&O table to listen to them once in a while. Now I have my CD's on my media center and listening is so easy the CD's are great. I purchased this Box Set to get the latest mastering of the CD's as well as the DVD I found the quality much better than I remember it. The Colorado Symphony is wonderful and sounds so good with them. I have heard that some feel that they over power some songs but I do not. The mix of music is acceptable but would have been nice if more were on it. If you purchase the two disks CD set this is only about $9.00 more and you get the DVD. One thing I did notice a few times during the performance is Ray Thomas has no emotion sometimes or a weird expression. Justin well what a voice and John is great also but not young anymore. My favorite track is with out a doubt, Isn't Life Strange and Tuesday Afternoon. Perhaps I am little bios on this group as its one of my favorites. If your new to the Moody Blues your going to get a treat when you listen to all of there great music. If you not like me you will have mixed feeling about this concert. Over all I think the purchase was well worth it. I like to listen to the Moody Blues Live I think some or most of there music is just meant for it. I only wish I had seen them Live long ago but did not. I would pay today top money to see them at Red Rocks, that I have been to and wow what a place......

exceptional, a must have album.......2006-11-12
A night at red rock should be the core album for any Moody blues or rock collection. THis album provides great acoustics from the natural enviroment of the red rock canyon, and along with the addition of the colorado symhony to this outdoor stage, this album is a step above any other. For a great musical experience close your eyes, put on your headphones and enjoy this masterpiece.
Magic of Red Rocks and the Orchestra is there - Production is Not.......2006-01-09
I haven't been a able to put my foot on it, but there is something special about the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. While I've never visited there, every performance I've heard or seen recordings of just seems to be outstanding. Acts such as U2, Stevie Nicks, John Tesh, and Phish are all prime examples of artists that just seem to take it to the next level when playing at Red Rocks. I can't say it's the acoustics, but there must be something about the natural beauty that enables artists to take it up a notch. At the same time, I always think it is great when an artist uses a marching band or orchestra as part of the performance. Fleetwood Mac (while not performing at Red Rocks), utilized a marching band for their live album/video, "The Dance". John Tesh did happen to perform at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. In both cases, the use of these "extra" musicians allowed the live performance to have a new dimension. Tesh's performance in particular is a great example of combining the emotion of Red Rocks with the power of an Orchestra. I was pleased when the Moody Blues released a live performance with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra at Red Rocks. Once again, the emotion of Red Rocks combines with the power of an Orchestra to create something special. In the case of "The Moody Blues - A Night at Red Rocks With the Colorado Symphony Orchestra", the quality of the performance is there. The weak points are that there are flaws in the production of this collection as well as opportunities where more use of the Orchestra would have been better. One important note, this deals with the "original" release and not the remastered one.
In particular, the Moody Blues were tailor-made for a performance with an Orchestra. Fusion has always been a key element in the Moody Blues' performances. Their music genre is a fusion of Classic and Progressive Rock even though they have their roots in R&B. At the same time they have incorporated orchestral elements into their performance. The instrument that has always stood out has been the use of the Flute by Ray Thomas
For the most part, I look at the Moody Blues as having three types of sound that are a part of this concert. The progressive sound is going to be the bulk of the performance. There is also a psychedelic element to much of these songs as well. These songs are where the Orchestra is going to play a stronger role in the concert. These songs include "Tuesday Afternoon", "For My Lady", "Lean on Me", "Isn't Life Strange", "The Other Side of Life", "Nights in White Satin", and "Question". It is worth noting the concert opener "Overture" is driven by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra" while "Late Lament" is a spoken track.
The second sound is what I call their mainstream sound - a sound most heard in the 1980s. There are three songs that are done that are familiar to most people. They are all done back to back during the performance - and I think that is a good thing. These songs don't get much help from the Orchestra but they don't need it. The songs are "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", "The Voice", and "Your Wildest Dreams". Many have said that "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" is sort of a sequel to "Your Wildest Dreams". On a side note, I would have liked to have seem "Somewhere" done after "Your Wildest Dreams". Another side note is it would have been nice to see what the Orchestra could do here.
The final one is the Classic Rock sound. I'll also put their R&B roots into this category since Blues has influenced many a Classic Rock artist. The concert selection gives us songs such "Lovely to See You", "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band", and "Ride My See Saw". In these songs, the Moody Blues don't need much help from the Orchestra - although in some cases, it would have also been great to see what the Orchestra would do. I happen to think "Ride My See Saw" is one of the greatest concert finales you will ever hear. This is a very good song, but it goes to legendary proportions when heard live. Often there isn't a person in the audience sitting for this song. It's clear that the setting of Red Rocks takes this song up a notch. It is worth noting that "I'm Just a Singer" gets some nice horn work from the orchestra.
The music is terrific. In fact, I normally like when a Live Album is taken from a Single Night's performance as opposed to being a "compilation" of live performances. This allows you to "capture" the magic of one night. The performance this album was taken from September 9, 1992 - and that's a good thing. Here is where the problem comes: The entire night's performance is not there. There were other songs that are on the remastered version and DVD version. In addition, there is no "crowd noise" continuity from track to track. Even on "live compilations", I've seen the album's production simulate that the concert is from one night. For this "special" performance, it would have been great to capture the sounds of the audience when going from track to track. Instead we something that does sound like a collection of 15 tracks.
The liner notes don't contain a lot of information, but the best are a short blurb from each of the band members on their thoughts about that particular night's performance. Overall I had very high expectations of this particular performance - and while there is a lot of quality music on this collection, the points about the continuity and lack of the use of the orchestra ultimately take things down from "5 Stars". I'd also try to get the more complete remastered version.
Very entertaining!.......2002-07-11
The Moody Blues have been a musical "institution" for 35+ years now and are still going strong in the 21st Century (a fall 2002 album is planned for release). One of the first bands to successfully mix symphonic orchestration with rock and roll, they definitely show off their stuff in 1993's "A Night At Red Rocks" (with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra).
Most of their well-known favorites are present included strong versions of "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", "The Other Side Of Life", "Question", and "Ride My See-Saw". The high notes are a little harder to hit and the harmony is not quite as impressive as in the old days, but Lodge, Hayward, Thomas and Edge still play with energy and fervor and act as if they are enjoying themselves.
The Colorado Symphony Orchestra holds up their end of this concert well, and while, they aren't the London Festival Orchestra (from the original "Days of Future Passed") they are certainly skilled musicians who help make this a memorable album.
And, while I agree with one of the other reviewers about the quality of the CD (it IS hard to pick up some of the bass and drum work), as live albums go, this is a keeper and should be part of your collection! A definite "must-have" for Moody Blues fans!
Get the VHS Video!!.......2002-06-24
I'm listening to the concert playing on the T.V. as I write this review for the VHS version.
If you cannot find the video here on Amazon.com, then go to your nearest mall, find the store that sells music videos, and buy this concert. Great music, great audience and you also get Gemini Dream, New Horizon, Say it with Love, and The Story in Your Eyes, on the tape. Four extra songs on the video.
Get both, one for the car audio and one for the T.V.!
LIVE SYMPHONIC ROCK - IT'S THE MODDY BLUES LIVE.......2001-10-13
I love the Moody Blues. Rock with an orchestra. Really unique, intricate, beautiful, creative music. Interestingly, the music stands the test of time. "Nights In White Satin", is as relevant and modern today as it was when I was in college in 1967. A great classical piece, which should be viewed in that context. The concert contains all their popular songs as well as three from the "Keys Of The Kingdom" disk, and an overture. The music is 15 stars and I am listening to it over and over. Justin Hayward and John Lodge are great writers. The lyrics are poetic and lovely and it's just great music. Period. It's just great music. There is very little crowd noise on the disk, which is also a plus. The orchestra is womderful, and the interaction between the band and the orchestra is appropriate and tasteful. The songs where the orchestra is omitted are great and the band stands alone. There is only one thing wrong with this disc. The sonics are not good. The rhythm section really suffers. Graeme Edge and John Lodge just don't show up here. The drums sounds like it was miked from a distance and the bass doesn't appear. It really makes the listening experience uncomfortable. It makes the disk sound cheesy and cheap at spots. Too bad. However, I would still buy the disk. The band and the orchestra are just great. I KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE SOMEWHERE. You know who.
