Procol Harum could be credited (if not blamed) for popularizing classical rock with its J.S. Bach-inspired hit, 1967's "A White Shade of Pale," but the band only rarely drifted into the precious territory explored by groups like the Moody Blues and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. A Salty Dog, Procol Harum's third and best album, was built around the twin keyboards of Gary Brooker and Matthew Fisher (who also produced this album), but also showcased the bluesy, fuzz-toned guitar of Robin Trower. The title tune is a fully orchestrated sea ballad memorable for Brooker's soulfully majestic vocal. Folk-rock tunes like "The Milk of Human Kindness" and "Too Much Between Us" were more stripped-down but no less effective. Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski hatched the idea for Rogue's Gallery while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"--that idea being to cast genteel rock superstars like Bono, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Andre Corr, and Sting to reinterpret gritty seafaring standards for an exhaustive 43-track double-disc set produced by Hal Wilner. Throw in a bunch of credible folk stars (Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson), their offspring (Rufus, Teddy) and a string of other curious characters (Jarvis Cocker, Antony) and what results is one of the strangest compilations in recent memory, if not exactly the most historically authentic or, well, digestible. Fun--but not great.......2007-07-03

What a concept--a pirate song co-produced by Verbinski and Depp inspired by the "Pirates of the Carribean" series. It should be great and in places, it is. The big question I came away with is--who is Jack Sh**? That one definitely has me guessing.

I won't belabor the song content or the production value. I think the most notable reviews have got that down pat, although I'm not marking down as far as they have because I'm giving points for originality being a fan of Spike Jones and some other truly demented people.

One thing to note: this is not a CD you'd buy if you were looking for something to amuse your kids. Some of the content is very bawdy and Mom and Dad would have some serious 'splaining to do to the little pirates. There's both some language and some situations that are more twisted than a Hangman's knot.

It is not unusual to find sea shanties performed by not the greatest musicians or singers in the world. It is not unusual to find shanties sung by people who have difficulty keeping perfect pitch, or tempo. But at least they understand what the music is about, and sing it with heart and enthusiasm and a love for the genre.

Hal Wilner should stick to whatever genre it is that made him know enough to be approached by labels, because he clearly has no understanding, and less enthusiasm for *this* genre.

If you love lively music from the maritime era, you can only be bitterly disappointed by this collection. Out of 43 tracks, I found 15 that were salvageable. Sort of.

I've already tossed this onto the pile to go to the resale shop. It wasn't worthy the cost of shipping.

I have to admit that I have no idea what kinds of music the pirates sang aboard their ships. I know it probably wasn't "yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me," but I expected something different than this. I think my expectations have been colored by groups like The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Tossers, and the Real McKenzies. I have an annual Pirate Party and I was hoping to find some good music here to get people in the mood for a treasure hunt or pirate liar's dice, but instead, the music on this CD is something I'd put on if the party went on too long and I wanted to encourage people to leave. Some of it is actually awful and the rest is too slow and plodding to inject much energy into any situation.

I appreciate what was attempted here (contemporary artists paying homage to sea chanteys in the spirit of our romanticized version of the pirate era) but it just doesn't really work. The effect is similar to what would be achieved if the London Philharmonic Orchestra attempted to play rap "music" with Luciano Pavarotti rhymin' while flashing gang signs.

the selection of titles attracted me. The quality of the arrangements, the voices, and the music---are all quite bad.

It is VERY sad that these same titles, could not have been produced for quality. They sound like a nightmare.

Many of the songs on this live Procol Harum disc maintain their wonderful spiritual atmosphere from the studio versions, but are given a louder, more meaningful performance when delivered in a live setting. If you enjoy what you've heard from Procol Harum in the studio, you will no doubt find a lot to enjoy about this disc. A very melodic and almost hauntingly pleasant live album. I can see myself listening to this band when I'm 80 years old. I bet by that age, I'll still be enjoying these excellent tunes.

The Best Procol Harum Album Ever.......2007-01-26

It took me a long time to find this album on CD, previously only had the vinyl and took it all over the world with me. The CD is engineered very well, a clean recording. The only thing that could have been better is if this album had been released on DVD-Audio or SACD in a true 5.1 mix. This album was originally produced in quad-4 so a remix to 5.1 would be easy and fantastic.

It's been a long time .......2006-11-28

I haven't heard this album, with the exception of the first track, in about 30 years. My roommate in college owned this album and I was always a PH fan so hearing them with an orchestra was fasinating. I never really saw the CD anywhere until I came across it here and said I must have it. It still sounds great. The songs and arrangements are truly classic in every sense.

Truly A Glimpse Of Nirvana.......2006-10-30

Procol Harum's work throughout the years has been uneven, but this collaboration with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is one of their shining moments. I have worn out more than one vinyl version of this recording over the years, and I also have the MFSL version of this CD. While it is true that the MFSL disc suffers in comparison to this one, keep in mind the state of technology in 1971. We do owe a debt to Wally Heider's mobile studio for the tapes that allowed Repertoire to do such a splendid job of remastering. This recording belongs in everyone's collection, whether they are a fan of Procol Harum or not. If you are not moved in some manner by the time you hear "Grand Finale", then you had better check your pulse.

In my humble opinion, this was Procol Harum's best album ever. I love it. Definitely has stood the test of time. When anyone new hears it, they always ask, "Who IS that?" Doesn't get much better than this!

Their Masterpiece, a true work of Art.......2005-11-21

This album paints a picture of the Sea that transports me to another place every time I listen. It does what art is supposed to do, move your senses, stir your feelings. I can't think of another themed-style rock recording that does this better than this one. It's true that you need "listen" to the music (not a party album, for sure) but this is a blend of immensely talented musicians peaking, guided by one of the greatest rock poets this side of Dylan, so please, PAY ATTENTION! Grab a pair of headphones, relax, and enjoy the artistry of one of the greatest albums in all rock history! If you needed to get one Procol Harum record, this is the one...

Harum's Greatest Disc.......2003-08-01

1969's "A Salty Dog" is Procol Harum's masterpiece. The music here is simply wonderful, with the band's trademark blend of rock, blues, & classical worked to majestic perfection. The title track is unquestionably one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written, with passionate vocals from keyboardist Gary Brooker. "The Milk Of Human Kindness" is great piano-rock, "Too Much Between Us" is a lovely acoustic number, "The Devil Came From Kansas" is a memorable Harum song with a strong, marching feel, and "Boredom" is just plain fun, with fine vocals from organist Matthew Fisher. "Juicy John Pink" is excellent dirty blues, "Wreck Of The Hesperus" is a powerful dramatic number, and "All This And More" is sharp, melodic pop/rock. Guitarist Robin Trower steps up to the microphone with gusto on the great slow rocker, "Crucifixion Land," and Fisher returns to the mike on the winning, whimsical finale, "Pilgrim's Progress." The songwriting, with lyrics by Keith Reid, and the band's performances are all outstanding. Procol Harum have many brilliant albums to their credit, but "A Salty Dog" is the one that moves me the most. It's a gorgeous Harum classic.

WORTH BUYING.......2002-12-26

At the time, I knew Gary Brooker was never going to top this album and/or song (A Salty Dog). Sadly, I was correct. Album purchase is worth it JUST for title song, not to mention Wreck of the Hesperus and Pilgrim's Progress.

NO REVIEWS FOR THIS CLASSIC? WHAT'S WRONG OUT THERE?.......2002-12-09

Well, I can't believe there are no reviews on this disc yet! this is a bona fide early seventies classic. Procol Harum (along with the Band) really set the standard for intelligent songwriting and superlative singing and playing in the early seventies. If you liked "A Whiter Shade Of Pale", then there's plenty to recommend on this disc. Gary Brooker as usual is a wonder especially on "A Salty Dog" and "Too Much Between Us", and there are two gorgeous Matthew Fisher numbers, "Wreck of the Hesperus" and "Pilgrims Progress". Robin Trower is kept in relative check on most of this album, but "The Devil Came From Kansas" lets him make a wonderful racket. And the late, great B.J. Wilson was one of rock's truly great drummers.

Exceptional. Among my top 5 including any group. Well-crafted, although a couple of cuts from other Procol albums would fit in (eg. "Whaling Stories"). My only complaint is the ending comes too soon.

Not many better, if any ever, than A Salty Dog.......2006-12-22

The subtle orchestration and vocal interpretation, the swing between classical and blues rock influence, the interplay between piano, organ and one of the top 5 rock drummers from the early era (BJ Wilson seldom receives proper credit - he wasn't the wild thrasher like a Moon, but perfectly complemented his band) not to mention excellent engineering, and real poetry for lyrics... "Now many moons and many Junes have passed since we made land." C'mon. Despite all the tricks and training of today's rock "stars," if you were to try to find anything better in current rock, and few if any in classic or 80s/90s rock, you would find yourself on "A twisted path, our tortured course, and no one left alive."

I was in the midst of reading Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" when I listened to this alnum for the first time, and "A Salty Dog" sent chills down my spine. Since I grew up on the coast of New England, I have always loved "The Wreck of the Hesperus" but I would recommend this album to anybody anywhere! You'll find yourself whistling along to "Boredom" and marvel at Robin Trower's powerful vocal performance on "Crucifiction Land." I think my favorite on the whole album, however, is the last one. This is a musical experience you will not soon forget!

I loved this album so much when it came out in the 60s. Buying it and playing it again I am amazed at how much resonance it has for my way of life and admittedly more mature view of the world now I am a hell of a lot older.

In a nutshell everything about Procul Harem's "inner meaning" and descriptive poetic way with lyrics was ahem, a wee bit over my head when I was 18. But I just knew they were saying something tremendously important. Even if I couldn't quite understand what these unusual plays on words REALLY meant, I knew it was about something REAL but just beyond the tip of my own tongue.

And who cared back then? If you loved "Whiter Shade of Pale" and I did, the whole concept of the band which is an Art Nouveau pastiche of orchestrational brilliance with majestic themes and melodies worth of Bach himself. Well it was simply thrilling and daring enough and who actually needed to know what it MEANT?

So no matter what your age timeline this album is one for the ages. After "Whiter Shade of Pale" it burst on the scene and was Procul's first well recorded effort (hey it was finally in Stereo, where Pale was NOT.)

If you like "Whiter Shade of Pale" then this album is just WAITING for you to stumble upon it. I guarantee you will be stunned.

And if you were alive back then and can swear you actually were in on what was being said---then I am glad you are alive now and reading this. Sorry I missed meeting you and so much of what happened the first time. Remember when we used to not trust anybody over 30? Isn't that hilarious?

This album is a must for all lovers of hip music or even those who apreciate artistic freedom in recording. Pick up a modern CD in your hands and think. Was this CD produced by a artist who had true control over his product? Would this artist be able to produce more records even when sales figures went low? Has this artist only had a couple of hits or is this cd a gimmick?
Now pick up your Salty Dog LP and remember - were not talking millenium bands here. These guys would have made the worst boy band in the universe. What we are talking is pure art. A album that mixes poetry, art and music all together in a hip guise. Procul Harum are not a cool band but that is why they are great. As a old freind of mine once said, "Yeah I love the Harum - but I wish I knew what they were going on about" You could play this album a thousand times and always see a new meaning in the songs and if your really clever you could tell us all what the Harum really meant. If your like me and not really clever then you might just find yourself attracted to a group that is un cool non groovy but one hundred percent unadultrated art. ENJOY :)

I was'nt too impress w/this one.It has it's similarities to the likes
of greatwhite,only great white stands alone in comparrison.For the
price I just don't think it's worth it.If you want great rock,check out
wildside it's way better for your money,It's a real gem.This cd is a

I remember buying this when I was about 15 (some years ago now)
It was something different to what I'd been used to. But it was raw, bluesey,and quite funky. The broad and brash guitar licks and wicked solos are what really made this album good. The singer's voice was ok, but had it's bad moments too

In the days of big hair and big rockin' hits there were many great bands that were overlooked...This was the case with Salty Dog, I was blown away when i first heard this group, I was in junior high and a friend of mine turned me on to this album, of course that was back in the days when cassettes were the big thing, Side B of the cassette was undoubtably better than Side A, So I guess the last five or six tracks on the cd are the choice cuts. "Lonesome Fool" my favorite song on the album is worth checking out just for the banjo....thats right, I said banjo. Also "Sacrifice Me" is a killer power ballad (how was this song not a hit?)....So if you were into Kix, Skid Row, Slaughter & Britny Fox..Here's one you will dig.

Exceptional. Among my top 5 including any group. Well-crafted, although a couple of cuts from other Procol albums would fit in (eg. "Whaling Stories"). My only complaint is the ending comes too soon.

Album Description

When Procol Harum's Gary Brooker wanted to organize a concert to help raise money for the beautiful 13th Century church of St. Mary & All Saints in rural Surrey, England, he not only chose some of his finest musician friends to help out with the cause, but he also went on to record the event and release it on a fan club cd in a very limited run of 1000 units. This rare release Within Our House went on to become a highly collectable recording when the obvious happened as it sold out in a matter of days. However, with Gary Brooker's blessings, Friday Music is now releasing this fine live recording for the first time in North America, to go along with the extensive Procol Harum Remasters series.

Procol Harum classics like "A Salty Dog" and "Holding On" get the five star treatment from this eclectic group of musicians. Brooker's vocals and piano work are stellar throughout the recording and his emotional readings of the gospel and religious material is second to none, as his interpretation of the classic Elvis Presley hit "Peace in the Valley" really conveys the true meaning of this charitable event.

Other Procol Harum favorites like "The Long Goodbye" and the classic "Nothing but the Truth" are truly inspiring in the church environment, as the album closes with a heart rendering version of their number one classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale."

The applause you will hear from this lucky audience will attest that this was a successful night for everyone involved with this wonderful event. This newly remastered Friday Music disc bring this fine concert to light for the first time in North America. Procol Harum fans rejoice!

This benefit concert, recorded September 28, 1996 in a big old stone church, features an odd combination of spirituals, madrigals, old Procol tunes and one Elvis impersonation. Backing Gary Brooker are a gospel choir, string quartet, and the Gary Brooker Ensemble, four musicians who are NOT introduced as the New Procol Harum.

Procol fans will surely enjoy the Procol tunes, but the unabashed religious nature of many of the other tunes may throw them off. The acoustics are grand and Gary sounds great, but one wonders exactly which market this release is aimed for. Hopefully the concert raised all the funds needed, because the program here -- part classical, part Christian, part rock & roll -- seems destined to find few devotees of all three.
