    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Garage Offerings From West Texas.......2007-06-29

The third volume in the History of Texas Garage Bands series delivers 16 tunes releaed by Odessa's AOK record label. The songs are standard, middle-of-the-road garage-rock workouts; they lack the primal energy, youthful agression, and unashamed originality that mark the best garage music. As a result, there are very few exciting or even interesting tracks here. Sure, there are a few bright spots: The Shades' "Gingerbread Man" is a taut, hyperactive pop rocker with some surprisingly funny (not to mention unquestionably cool) lyrics, while the Carrols Mood provide two tense, smokey groovers. Jerry Simpson's "Young Boy" is a good protest number with a vaguely country-ish feel, and the Venturas' "Hornets' Nest" is a blues rocker that really smokes... for the first minute or so, anyway. Pretty much everything else is pretty dull and forgettable- the groups are trying too hard to sound like the Beatles and the 'Stones, filling their songs with faux-merseybeat hooks and cliched lyrics. There's nothing terrible, by any means, but there's also very little that would be of interest to anyone but a garage-rock completist.
