FREDDY CANNON "THE SHOT HEARD 'ROUND THE WORLD".......2003-06-01
Freddy Cannon made what I like to call, "good time happy music"! If you want to dance like there's no tomorrow, even if only in your mind, just put this CD on your player and the "happiness" starts to happen.
The title song, "Where The Action Is" was the theme song from the Dick Clark television show of the same name (if you remember it was co-hosted by Linda Scott ("I've Told Every Little Star") and Steve Alaimo. I never knew that the "band" that played for this track consisted of: Glen Campbell on guitar, Leon Russell on piano, Hal Blaine on drums, and James Burton on guitar. What a line-up for a rock & Roll band!
I purchased this CD especially for "The Dedication Song". This was the song used as the opening theme for a "phone-in all-request oldies radio show" I used to listen to. A most appropriate song to open an oldies show of requests and dedications. . . and Freddy sounds like a deejay who knows his stuff!
"Beautiful Downtown Burbank" sounds like an ode to Rowan & Martin's "Laugh-In" just on the basis of its title and multi-repitiions of that line made famous on that television show by announcer Gary Owens.
"Charged-up,Turned-up Rock-N-Roll Singer" comes across as a medley of Freddy's greatest hits. It's a good song, but leaves you wanting to hear him sing the entire version of each tune.
The final track from 1981 "Let's Put The Fun Back In Rock & Roll" is an apt commentary and editorial by Freddy on what Rock & Roll is all about. It's about "fun" and "happy times" and Freddy does indeed put a lot of fun into his rock & roll and into our experience of it.
I'm grateful to Freddy Cannon for putting so much "joy" into his music and for bringing the experience of that "fun" into our lives just by listening to it. Thanks Freddy Cannon for firing "the shot heard 'round the world", and now I understand the "Boom Boom" in Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon!
The Forgotten Years...........2003-04-17
64 - 81 must rank as being Freddys most accomplished years in terms of rock and roll output. From his cover version of Rock Around the Clock (is there a better version anywhere??) to his 81 US hit with the Belmonts, he stays, as ever, completely true to the Freddy Cannon principle that Rock and Roll is fun, and needs nothing more than a big back beat and 100% commitment. Yes he does it all here. It certainly begs the question as to what goodies remain in the vaults post 81. Lets hope we see an effort to get his more recent work on CD. Maybe Bear Family Records want to look at doing some sort of Box collection as there's still plenty of 64-81 stuff which doesnt appear on this CD. Some of Freddys WB stuff needs serious reissuing. Anway, this 64-81 collection shows the Boom Boom man at his very best. Of course, old rockers dont really get older musically, they just get better and better!
Volume 2 of the hits, essentially.......2003-03-23
Varese's "The Very Best of Freddy Cannon: 1959-1963" (which see) anthologizes Cannon's stint with Swan Records, the period during which he established himself as Mr. "Boom Boom" making rock and roll records with the pure fun and excitement of a ride on the roller coaster at Palisades Park. This collection, picks up where that first one left off, collecting Cannon's work on Warner Brothers and subsequent labels for which he recorded. Revitalized and as energetic as ever, two more of Cannon's 45's, "Abigail Beecher" and "Action" invaded the top 20 in the mid-60's. One more Warner hit, "The Dedication Song", just scraped under the top 40 in 1966 but soon the music-buying public turned its back on Cannon-style material and his chart appearances dried up. Several label changes with little success ensued until, in 1981, Cannon saw his last charting hit, "Let's Put The Fun Back In Rock N Roll", a collaboration with the Belmonts, make it into the lower reaches of the top 100. Though not as packed with hits as the Swan period piece, this collection makes an outstanding companion to that earlier one and is essential to any respectable rock and roll CD library. Varese has done an admirable job here production-wise with superior sound quality and a decent eight-page liner notes booklet. Many of the tracks (1,2,4-7,11,13,18) are in stereo, notably "Abigail Beecher" which appears in stuffy mono on most other CDs. Quintessential American rock and roll here - pure fun stuff with no pretense of musical seriousness or political grandstanding.
Second chapter of Cannon's classic rock 'n' roll.......2002-06-04
Varese's second Freddy Cannon disc covers his later hits at Warner Brothers in the mid-60s, as well as several comeback sides from the 70s-80s. Though mostly remembered for his initial flush of success ("Tallahassee Lassie" "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" "Palisades Park") on Swan (and anthologized on Varese's "Palisades Park: The Very Best of Freddy Cannon: 1959-1963"), Cannon's second blast of singles shows him to be an unremitting rock 'n' roller who stared down the British Invasion and folk-revivalists, and stayed true to his roots.
From the garage-guitar driven opener, "Abigail Beecher" (backed with the equally driven flipside, "All American Girl") through 1981's minor hit with the Belmonts, "Let's Put the Fun Back in Rock & Roll," Cannon's trademark vocals never lose their passion (or their "whooos" filling in every empty space). His 1965 title song, "Action" for Dick Clark's summer television program has the same boardwalk effervescence captured on "Palisades Park," backed by many of the same pros who populated Phil Spector and Brian Wilson's records (e.g., Leon Russell, Hal Blaine, James Burton, Carol Kaye).
Cannon's material throughout the era was very in-the-moment. "It's Happening," Boyce & Hart's "Let Me Show You Where It's At" and "Beachwood City" celebrated the sunny times of the here-and-now. Similar to Gary Usher's drag-and-surf songs, but delivered with a harder '50s rock 'n' roll beat. Russ Regan's horn-filled "The Laughing Song" only managed to bubble-under the top-100, but still retains its original charm. Similarly, the non-charting "Natalie" has a wicked Sunset Strip-inspired attitude. Bonuses include 1967's previously unreleased cover of Bobby Day's "Rockin' Robin" (which differs from the Buddah release made in 1970, not included here) and the amusement-themed "Ride, Roller Coaster, Ride."
By 1968 Cannon had left Warner Brothers, and released a truly manic cover of Bill Haley's "(We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock," including a wicked James Burton lead. 1970's indie-released "Charged-Up, Turned-On Rock-n-Roll Singer," finds Cannon losing none of his energy, and working his earlier hits into a smashing medley.
Varese's two-volumes (totalling 38 tracks) provide an outstanding view of Cannon's career, collecting virtually all of his important singles, as well as numerous excellent, but lower-charting entries. Like few others of his generation, Cannon maintained both his verve and his commitment to rock 'n' roll from his earliest sides to his latest.

Two of the Ventures' Best.......2006-03-23
Compilations of the Ventures' "Greatest Hits" are a dime-a-dozen and don't really represent the band's mid-1960s strengths. This CD, which collects two complete Ventures LPs from around 1965, showcases an exceptionally skillful instrumental band with a straightforward, fuzzy, almost garage-like sound. The Ventures were a popular band because they gave their audience exactly what they wanted - tough, straightforward instrumenal versions of popular contemporary rock songs. I think you will find this collection in particular a better introduction to what the band was really about at the height of its commercial success.
"Where the Action Is" is a fine LP, featuring several original tunes as well as covers of "Lies," "A Taste of Honey," and "Fever." It ends with a great version of "She's Just My Style, and is a solid example of what the Ventures typically accomplished in their usually abbreviated recording sessions. On its own it isn't essential, but it highlights what a typical Ventures LP sounded like.
"The Ventures Knock Me Out," on the other hand, is one of their absolute best and hardest rocking LPs. It was the Ventures' response to the British Invasion, and the Ventures include several songs that Brit rockers brought to the US in 1964 or 1965. Their cover of the Beatles' "I Feel Fine" is a relatively faithful one (down to the opening feedback and reverb) but the rest are considerably pumped-up. Relatively catchy but effete hits like the Zombies' "She's Not There" or the Searchers' "Love Potion Number Nine" are given the full Ventures' treatment. They are toughened, fuzzed-out cover versions that even those most skeptical of the British Invasion would welcome. In fact they have more in common with what harder Brit bands like the Yardbirds and Who sounded like than what most of the poppier bands delivered. It's amazing to consider that the Ventures probably knocked out "Knock Me Out" in less than a week!
The bonus tracks are nothing special. One Way Records seems to have assigned bonuses at random to their re-releases. "Superstar Revue" is an awful 1970s era track and the other songs are representative of the Ventures' earlier, more surf-oriented style.
Buy this if you can!.......2005-11-06
Back when I was five or six ('65-'66), my Pop brought these two albums home, because he wasn't too happy with the way rock music was headed, yet didn't want to deny us kids of it. He'd had to deal with some guff from his dad about bringing home jazz records, so he had an idea about the parental resistance towards whatever was the latest music.
We were blown away! These guys were fantastic! The guitars were their own Mosrite axes and there's not a slouch among them. The drummer's talents are best displayed on "Gone, Gone, Gone".
Much later on I "appropriated" them and played them even though they were pretty well shot. Then one day in '96, I just happened to spy this double album CD at a record store and bought it without hesitation. I couldn't believe my luck! And to add to it, the sound quality is amazing! Since then my brothers have all bothered me to lend it to them. If you consider yourself a Ventures fan, you can't do without this collection- period. The price may seem a bit steep, but just one play will dispell any buyer's remorse.
The Fabulous Ventures Still Knock Me Out.......2003-07-01
This two-fer is an example of The Ventures in their 60's prime, with "Knock Me Out" being one of their best albums, ( with "Out Of Limits" and "Walk Don't Run '64"). One of the great guitar instrumentals of all time, "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue", is included,(later covered by Mick Ronson), and is worth it alone.
The driving guitars are showcased in such outstanding tunes as Jackie DeShannon's "When You Walk In The Room" (with a lead guitar series that you will instantly recognize, later covered by Pam Tillis and Paul Carrack among others), Manfred Mann's "Sha La La", (one of my favorite cuts) and "I Feel Fine".
An original, "Mariner #4",surprised me when it first came out, obviously influenced by their earlier albums, but is a standout and an often missed classic.
"Where The Action Is" was an albumn hard to find, and to have it coupled with "Knock Me Out" made me buy it immediately, especially since I played the vinyl albums to death. "Taste Of Honey", (Herb Alpert), the title song, and their own "Action Plus" are among the better cuts.
The added tracks "The Savage", (Great Vintage Ventures) is good to have, and the "Superstar Revue" was an attempt at the disco and Gerry McGee era and is quite different from the rest of this CD.
A good price for the greatest instrumental group ever, whose influence is phenomonal. Why aren't they in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame???? It can't be because of talent, sales, or influence. As mentioned by other reviewers, the sound is very good, and is a worthy addition to your library, and a must for a Ventures Fan.
Good Listening.
The Ventures are the kings of instrumental rock!.......2000-09-27
This was the second Ventures CD I ever bought. The 2-LPs-on-1-CD format grabbed me. Plus I wanted to have "Slaughter on 10th Avenue" and "I Feel Fine" [a Beatles cover]. So I ordered this CD, and liked it immediately after I put it on. First of all, the sound quality is excellent stereo with great separation. Next, the performances are simply awesome.
The Ventures are so much fun to listen to; it makes you want to go out there and play those songs yourself! Just about every song is extremely listenable. The covers of hits of the day are fun (I Feel Fine, Gone Gone Gone, Hang On Sloopy, Oh Pretty Woman, etc.).
The first 2 of the three bonus tracks are in mono. "The Savage" was a B-side. The second, I don't know about. The third shouldn't even be on the CD - it's some disco thing from the 70s. But otherwise, it's a great CD to play at parties of whatever. Buy it now. Excuse me for being a salesman.

Guitarist Sue Foley returns with Where the Action Is, a confident collection of original material and covers, like 2000's Love Comin' Down. A highlight is "Two Bluebirds," a slow, laconic paean to the effort that goes into love. Foley's distinctive voice, which may not appeal to all tastes, is perfect for this song; her drawn-out enunciation goes hand-in-glove with the slower, hot-weather material. The cover of the Rolling Stones' "Stupid Girl" is unsurprising, given that Foley's a Stones fan, but her considerable guitar skills and distinctive voice work best with her own material. In this case, that's mostly the country-inflected blues-rock that is her forte, with occasional forays into classic rock and R&B (her take on "Roll with Me, Henry" rolls along with the confidence born of consummate skill). And, maybe just to show she can, she takes a stab at traditional blues with "Down the Big Road Blues" and hits the mark dead center. With Where the Action Is, Foley continues to live up to the potential that's been evident since her first album. Listening to her has become an unmitigated pleasure. --Genevieve Williams

SUE ROCKS!.......2003-03-14
While many of the other contemporary female Blues artists in 2002 were making safe middle of the road releases, leave it to Sue Foley and producer Colin Linden to push the envelope. Following her most balenced album on "Love Comin' Down", Foley delivers a driving guitar based project which hasn't been heard by this lady since her early years on the Antone label. The difference now is Foley is a very good singer and the songs are much more varied. On "Where The Action Is", Sue pays somewhat of a homage to her heroes - The Rolling Stones. Think of "It's Only Rock And Roll" with a little more edge minus the filler. The standout cut is "Get Yourself Together" with its "Gimme Shelter" like guitar riffs. The rest of the songs are Blues based Rock without the headache factor. With her recent releases on the Shanachie label, Foley is now getting her just due as a W.C. Handy 2003 nominee for " Contemporary Blues Female Artist Of The Year". "Where The Action Is" is a culmination of talented musician coming of age.
Rough & Tumble.......2002-11-17
Ten years after her debut, Ottawa native Sue Foley rocks out with a great blues album. "I know you & your friends hang out downtown at the Twist & Shout," she opens on the title track with Richard Bell's pulsing organ cutting the groove deep. Colin Linden whose "Big Mouth" & "Raised by Wolves" CDs are classic lends his slide guitar to "Vertigo Blues" with Sue's voice mixed like Janis Joplin wailing from the grave, "No use in crying, no use in being alone, no use in dying out on your own." My favorite track is "Love Disease" whose backbeat with Bryan Owings going crazy on drums makes me hit the repeat button. "Two Bluebirds" is a midtempo electric blues. Foley's cover of the Rolling Stones' "Stupid Girl" is a no-holes-barred rockfest homage to her early rock heroes. "Let It Go" has a pretty melody. "I've been thinking of you, and I've been feeling so blue," Sue opens on "Every Hour" which has the feel of a classic torch blues. Sounding like Lucinda Williams who receives a credit of thanks on the CD, "Baby Where Are You?" is about as soft as Foley gets on this set. "Get Yourself Together" has addictive guitar parts on this radio-friendly piece. Sue gives Etta James' "Roll With Me Henry" a Bluesbrakers kind of treatment. The traditional "Down the Big Road Blues" gets an unplugged treatment with Colin Linden on dobro. The CD concludes with the rave rocker "Gotta Keep Moving." WTAI is a hot set with strong blues rock tracks. Don't miss it!
Very Good!.......2002-07-19
This is a great CD and i think her opening song, "Where the Action Is" is a GREAT tune along with the rest of the CD. I highly recommend it and it's definately well worth checking out!

Let's take a trip........2006-09-29
This CD features two Ventures albums from late 1965/early 1966.
The Ventures a Go-Go was the Ventures 20th album. It was released to capitalize on the popularity of go-go dancing. It features seven cover versions of recent hits, and five original tunes. The album has a lot of organ on it. I was surprised that the vocal lines in "Satisfaction" were played by an organ, instead of a guitar like they normally do when they cover a song with lyrics. Out of the original tunes, the great "The Swingin' Creeper" is a favorite among Ventures fans, although "A Go-Go Dancer" is pretty terrific, too. The rest of the album is also solid.
Where the Action Is was the Ventures 21st album. It was titled after a TV show that featured rock groups "performing" (really lip synching). The first song on the album is the theme song from that show (played by Paul Revere and the Raiders on the show itself). This album also features seven cover versions of recent hits, and five original tunes. The album has a harder edge to it, with quite a bit of fuzztone guitar. The best of the original songs is "Action Plus", but I also should mention "Nutty", which is based on The Nutcracker Suite (get it?). The best of the covers is "Lies", which is fantastic. The rest of the album is good, too.

Buy this CD? "I Wish You Would".......2007-06-01
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am asked often for my reviews and thoughts on 60's and 70's rock and roll.
The Yardbirds are a band I collect every note. This release deserves the 5 Stars from opening to close. With this particular pressing you'll get the 27 BBC Radio tracks and the a bunch of nice songs from Stockholm 67.
You have heard often about the trio of Clapton, Beck, and Page. Check out this release not only for the guitar but the underrated vocals of Keith Relf. He was a tremendous front man.
The material on the 2 discs will show you all sides of the band. The great hits and radio tunes shine such as For Your Love, Heart Full Of Soul, Still I'm Sad, and Train Kept A Rollin' but the cuts that may have escaped you in the past that further solidify their genius; "Love Me Like I Love You" and "Dust My Blues."
They could excel in the studio and on stage cut loose with awesome power. Go back in time and capture the moment it was rather special.
All the best,
Craig Fenton

GREAT BAND. Maximum Blues, Rock/R&B. Superb Musicians........1999-01-24
One of the greatest influences to Blues, Rock and Psychedelic music to emerge from the 60's. This CD captures all the energy and inovative brilliance that The Yardbirds had and delivered. With guitarists like Clapton, Beck and Page, and the superb vocals and harpist Keith Relf, and drummer supreme Jim McCarty and rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja, these guys rank with the greatest Rock musicians of all time and have earned their place in Rock history. This is a classic set not to be missed. Buy this one quick.
