It's actually George who plays the solos on "Something", including the one in the intro...revealed by amateur video I've seen from this tour.

Which does beg the question...where's the commercially-released pro-shot DVD that should be out from this tour? Musically and visually, this tour was a highlight of George's solo career.

5 out of 5 stars Every Career Should End Like This.......2006-07-13

I look at Harrison's Live In Japan as more than a collection of music played live. Taken with "Brainwashed" and "Concert For George", this album is the first of an epic trilogy in which George first says good bye to us, and then we say goodbye to him.

Coming off a five-year hiatus in 1987, George re-enters the limelight with "Cloud Nine". The years 1987 - 1991 were one of those post-breakup golden eras of the Fab Four. The three surviving Beatles were beginning to reconnect with each other, Yoko puts out "Imagine". The ice was thawing rapidly now, and Beatles fans were deliciously treated.

From Cloud Nine to the Traveling Wilbury albums, George is having a blast, and shows that of all rock icons, he has perhaps the coolest and perhaps most numerous group of iconic friends. Everybody is jamming with George these days. In the pantheon of the Beatles legend, 1987 - 1991 were George's years.

The quiet Beatle, who shunned the limelight, agrees to do this concert and album in Japan. His music covers the gamut - only about half love songs, the remainder are his commentary on life, the environment, spirituality, his love for John Lennon and all of his friends. On this album, George Harrison is where he was not often found while in the Fabs: front and center, and he masterfully commands the stage.

To the side, Harrison's devoted friend Eric Clapton treats Beatles music with respect and love.

Live In Japan is released, and within a few years George is first diagnosed with cancer. But in the meantime, he reunites with the Beatles for the Anthology, then records some tracks that are to become "Brainwashed". Each brick of the Harrison edifice is carefully put in place as his career comes first circle.

Finally - the Concert for George closes the final chapter in the saddest and most joyful of ways. But that's another review.

George covers all of his bases as he exits the stage . . . perfect!

This CD belongs in every Beatles and classic rock collection.

4 out of 5 stars A must for collectors.......2006-03-10

George Harrison after the Beatles broke up only toured twice.
The first time was 1973 when he lost his voice about midway through the tour. The other time is captured on this CD.
George uses Eric Claptons' band. Clapton has an excellant entourage of musicians.
George plays his best songs and greatest hits not only from his solo days but also from his Beatles days.
Harrison seems comfortable with Eric Clapton and they exchange some very nice lead guitar during the set.
My favorite songs on the album tend to be the songs from his Beatles days.
If I Needed Someone, I Want to Tell You, Here Comes the Sun, Something, Taxman and others.
I have been a lifelong Beatles fan and like a sponge try to collect Beatles albums.
George Harrison after the Beatles broke up in my mind wrote the best songs of all the former Beatles, with the exception of possibly John Lennon.
This is a real treat for Beatles fans, and a very historical tour of one of the icons of the 60's and Rock music in general.

i dont believe that people actually complain bout Live in Japan, come on guys, its george playing live.... how can u compare it to the 'concert for george' cd, sure the band for the tribute cd sounds better, maybe they even sing better then george, but u guys are missing the point, it aint a george song if he aint singing it, its just bunch of guys singing george songs, yeah u ave paul and ringo, they ave rite to sing it coz their the only surviving members but its like saying u luv birtney spears singing 'yer blues' or 'hey jude' or 'yellow submarine' or even 'for you blues', i beg to differ, even george not singing at his best, it is still george singing, if u listen closely, george is singing thru his heart, he meant every word, understand every word, coz who else in the world would know the meaning of the songs except for george, i should say he sang kinda like ala bob dylan in times they are a changin', george sang every song like he wanted to, if he feels the melody of the song should be sang like that so be it, every track is worth listen to, some of the song hadnt been played since the 60's, such as taxman etc, that alone is worth buying the cd, if u a truly beatles fan and truly a george harrison fan, u wouldnt complain 1 bit, coz its actually the best LP george had ever release since all things must pass and cloud 9.....

5 out of 5 stars I Want to Tell You it's Time For George!.......2005-01-15

This was the first live concert from George Harrison in many years. A gifted guitarist, lyricist and delightful vocalist, Harrison does not disappoint on this collection. Although his voice gets a little husky and raspy on some songs, he comes through in his distinct, Harrison style in fine form!

When you listen to "Piggies," George gives this 1968 gem an added bonus section, which is mentioned in his book, "I Me Mine." The high point of the collection for me was his doing two of my favorite Harrison Beatle classics, the 1969 gem "Here Comes the Sun" and the 1966 gem "I Want to Tell You," wherein he amends one line. This "change" is mentioned in his book "I Me Mine" as well.

Eric Clapton's band does a stellar job of performing with George. This combination works and flows with each other brilliantly and the guitar playing is superb. Just LISTEN to the 1968 magnum opus "While My Guitar Gently Weeps...." that is such a worthwhile treat!

This is such a delightful collection and people ranging from those just becoming familiar with Harrison, the Beatles and Clapton to inveterate fans. Be sure to check this out - it is excellent!

3 out of 5 stars big clapton fan.......2007-02-03

Clapton is one of the best guitar players. This has allot of extended versions of his hits and for a Clapton fan I do not see how you could not get this. A big problem for me that gets worse every time I listen ( I was hoping I could eventual ignore it and just listen to Clapton) is the rhythm section. This has got to be the worse drumming ever put on record, and it is mastered in a way that it is impossible to ignore. It's like water torture. (Also the price is 60 dollars?)

5 out of 5 stars Eric's Best Band.......2006-03-03

Being a long time Clapton fan, I can say with subjective certainty that the Tusla backup band, as heard on this retrospective, was the best that ever stood behind the man. In many cases, he stands in the background while the rhythym section just cooks- "Little Wing" and "Badge" serving as notable examples. Terry is superb both as a rhythym and lead guitarist...never again, not with Albert Lee, not even with Mark Knopfler, would the interplay be THIS smooth, THIS breathtaking, THIS raw. Oldaker is reminiscent of Levon Helm or Gene Parsons, and leads that band charging through numbers with his perfect touch. Dick Sims, on organ, sounds incredible, with his playing hovering between the background and foreground, much like Clarence White's guitar playing in the Byrds. It's there, and it's perfect in every case. Same for Radle- by this time, Radle had been Eric's longest standing bassist and knew Clapton's habbits. Listen to how spotlessly he counters them. And Elliman and Levy provide perfect harmony.
In sum, Eric's best band and Eric's rawest and BEST playing. Never again would he reach these heights. Ever.

4 out of 5 stars If you really love EC.......2005-07-10

This collection shows Eric at his best and his worst. These were days fueled by a lot of alcohol...and on some songs it shows. But for the most part this is a great collection of some of his live work in that era. Some of the jams are wonderful, "Badge" and "Eyesight." He's simply magic with the guitar. However, some, like "Crossroads," sound like he doesn't know which of the twelve blues bars he's supposed to be singing in (that was an unintentional pun.) Juxtapose this with "24 Nights" - this collection is a gritty, loose sound, while the latter is more of a clean, polished performance (that was an intentional pun). I love EC and hope he continues to release his live vault...no matter which of his phases it come from.

5 out of 5 stars Eric at his best.......2005-06-22

Someone once told me that Eric is best listened to live and this set proves the point!
Of course there are a few dodgy tracks and yes, I agree, there should have been other tracks added and others omitted.
But!
This is the master at his best, it doesn't get any better than this.
Favourite tracks, too hard to say which are my favourites but there is some wonderful guitar playing on all tracks.
I have been an Eric fan since the Yardbirds and this CD set takes pride of place in my collection

3 out of 5 stars A decent live recording.......2007-07-13

While this isn't the best live recording I have or have ever heard, it beats previous recordings of this show, such as Eric Clapton: Slowhand Masterfile Part 18, by a long shot.

1 out of 5 stars Not even a good bootleg.......2007-03-11

If you're going to rip-off an artist by putting the artist's work out there without paying him, at least have the good manners to take some time to make the rip-off sound decent. Any teen-ager with a free audio editing program could have made this listenable in about 45 minutes.

No, this is a straight line recording off of a high generation VHS tape. Sonic garbage.

OK, bootleggers are a fact of life, I guess, it's just this one is lazy.

And shame on Amazon for selling bootlegs. I'd not have thought they'd support ripping off artists (no one on the CD is making a penny on it, so you know).

Not at all what I expected but then, I forgot Erics' 80's performances were pretty lame. Don't misunderstand me: I am a Clapton fan for life, beginning with my first encounter with Cream, it is just this was an unremarkable concert set.

5 out of 5 stars Mignight Live.......2006-11-17

Clapton is at his absolute best when he is playing live. He never plays the same solo twice. So I really enjoy listening to his live recordings the best because I never know how he's going to play a song on any given night. This recording captures one of Clapton's shows in the late eighties. It's a great listen for the true fan of Eric Clapton.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully diverse.......2001-02-11

Recorded live from the Parco Novi Sad, in Modena Italy, on 20 June 1996, this is another of Pavarotti's wonderful concerts to benefit children who are caught up in the horrors of war. Some of the worlds best performers have gotten together for a diverse musical experience that defies language barriers, as well as musical genres. Practically everything is covered on this album. From rock, pop, classical, blues, sacred, jazz and latin...it's all here. Whatever your musical preference, this is an album that should appeal to all in it's diversity, and considering the worthy cause, a necessity for music lovers. And where else will you be able to hear Pavarotti exercising his chops with the likes of Eric Clapton, Liza Minelli, Sheryl Crow, Jon Secada, Joan Osborne and Elton John! And speaking of Sheryl Crow, you cannot miss her singing a Mozart opera aria with Pavarotti. She is truly amazing...who would have believed it. She more than holds her own with the maestro. This is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Incredibly life-affirming! Musical diversity at its best........1999-06-12

This CD has two levels of depth. Listen to it as blend of Euro-pop and US big-names, THEN try again.

"Holy Mother" travels from its prayer for strength to the junked-out streets screaming for survival in "Saint Teresa". On the journey continues to Elton's "Live Like Horses"-- his personal tribute to Versace. There, the classical truly melds with contemporary anthem-- and begs us to be free of our self imposed fences and walls. Food for thought and music to soothe the soul. This collection helped me survive my dear niece's suicide.

Thank you Pavarotti!

4 out of 5 stars A great idea, but incomplete.......2000-10-26

Erich Kunzel plays the Bond themes? What a great idea! In addition, there are a few more selections in the same vein, like the cops-n-robbers TV medley, music from The Untouchables, Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, etc.

Sometimes, you want to listen to the 007 music in instrumental only, and Kunzel and the Cincinatti Pops do a good job with the arrangements. But where are the rest of the songs? Missing are three of my all-time favorites, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker. I think the album would be better with 'more Bond, less other.' We certainly don't need TWO selections from Dick Tracy. And the theme from Darkman is stylistically quite similar to Dick Tracy; nothing is gained by playing both. Don't get me wrong; I like Danny Elfman (check out his "Beetlejuice" theme on Kunzel's 'Great Fantasy Adventure Album'). I just wanted to hear all my fave Bond pieces on the one CD.

Still, it's a keeper.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable collection of live material.......2003-06-08

Thsi is actually a good live album. It may be a bit too easy listening for fans of Eric Clapton the guitar hero (especially considering the inclusion of Charles Chaplin's "Smile"), but the sound is excellent, and the musicianship is, too.

"Time Pieces II" is a pretty accurate representation of Eric Clapton in the 70s, starting of with Danny Flowers' country-flavouered southern boogie "Tulsa Time", followed by an excellent rendition of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door".

There's not too much blues on display here...only "Rambling On My Mind" would qualify as a genuine blues, whereas "Blues Power" is really a rock song, and Clapton's own "Presence Of The Lord", as well as Steve Winwood's classic "Can't Find My Way Home", are none of the above. But if you like Eric Clapton's seventies releases, you'll find something to like about "Live In The Seventies" as well.

The Budokan band especially is excellent, with some wonderful piano playing from keyboardist Chris Stainton producing one of the best-ever readings of "Blues Power". (The "George" that Clapton asks to play a solo during "Smile" is not George Harrison, even though it sounds a little like him, especially the first few bars of the solo. It's Clapton's excellent second guitarist George Terry.)

This is a fine album, unless you expect Eric Clapton to play nothing but the blues, of course. The eight songs are played with energy and conviction, the solos are great, and Clapton's vocals are strong. A good addition to your Clapton collection, and an album that I have continued to enjoy for well over a decade.

5 out of 5 stars not aptly named, still it's a sure 5 star cd.......2002-01-16

the music in here is a sure 5 plus stars. it's one of my favorite live albums: you put this cd and LOVE every single song included, without having to skip not a single of them. Of course, this is the way E.C. is meant to be heard: live: with heart, inspired, jamming, you know, you've heard the man, you know what i'm talking about (at his best!). one of my favorite tracks in here is PRESENCE OF THE LORD. while all of the above remains true, one thing also does: i believe the "time pieces" is a "best-of series", so while it remains as one of my favorites, i think it's not aptly named. the reason: where is layla, cocaine......, if we are talking about a "best-of".

4 out of 5 stars Live Pieces.......2001-07-27

Time Pieces Volume 2 is culled together from Eric Clapton's live albums Just One Night and E.C. Was Here. "Tulsa Time" was a top thirty hit in it the live form included here and is a good track. The standout track is his version of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home" which is a blazing track. Decent stuff, but these songs can be found as part of better albums.

4 out of 5 stars Solid but uninspiring.......2001-02-05

Clapton's a great guitarist. He loves the blues. He's brilliant live. We know all this, and the album delivers all the above. If only there was a bit more cohesion between the tracks assembled. Still, it's from his brilliant 70s era, and there's not a clunker on here.
