Album Description
El Cantante - The Originals - Hector Lavoe
Héctor Lavoe continues to be the source of tributes, covers, drama, and films. This collection of carefully remastered original songs affirms that the attention is well deserved. It features some of the classic hits he recorded together with Willie Colon. The influence of Lavoe will continue to be felt in the Latin music world, but nothing beats listening to this remastered original.

Very Good... but windows does not display titles correctly.......2007-07-12
Those who like Hector Lavoe will enjoy this cd. Although the quality is not excellent (I heard the original LP in one of my neighbor's sound system and liked the sound and was amazed by the coda of Periodico de Ayer, an almost classical part at the end of the song with violins which lamentably is not included in this CD.)
I also like Dia de Suerte. How the chorus begins at "destiempo"... had not noticed it? uhmm.

The Originals languished on Motown's roster until Marvin Gaye took an interest in their career in 1968. Soon he'd produced and cowritten two Top 5 soul hits for the smooth quartet. The doo-wop-influenced "Baby I'm for Real" and "The Bells" are hardly the only highlights of this compilation, though--"God Bless Whoever Sent You" and the later disco smash "Down to Love Town" are near classics that deserve the new light that falls on them here. Most rewarding for Gaye fans will be an early, unreleased version of "Just to Keep You Satisfied," a song he later rewrote for Let's Get It On. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Good 'ol Songs.......2007-07-05
This compilation of The Originals is the basis for soul music. Marvin Gaye delivered the right sound and lyrics for this group.
The Originals.......2007-05-13
I like the cd, it's makes you want to invite friend over and have a social gathering.
The Very Best of the Originals.......2007-02-17
I bought the CD because it has my high school sweetheart's and my favorite song. He had bought me the album when we were 16 and I don't know what happened to it. We have recently reunited and the songs bring back memories. He sang "Baby I'm for Real" but I couldn't remember what it sounded like. It's great hearing the other songs that they had done as well.
Take me back to my college days!.......2006-10-31
When I was at college in the early 70's, I always loved the Moments, the Dells and the Originals. The Bells was and has always been one of my favorite love songs.
To be loved to that level would be a blessing!
Where do we go from here...?.......2006-02-03
With the 90s, "Superstar Series", "Baby, I'm For Real", & "Portrait Of The Originals" (the latter two reissues of their first two albums) cd releases long out of print, and when offered for sale, are at supply/demand numbers, it appears this "Very Best Of" and the import reissue of the first lp, are "it", at this time, provided the other UK "Best Of" fails to present itself. This cd is a 1999 release, yes plenty of copies were manufactured at that time, are they still being produced? For the informed, if the need is present to sell the necessity of the cd into an old-school soul music collection, just what is in the collection? For the un-informed, unquestioned late 60s early 70s ballad classics "Baby, I'm For Real", "The Bells, & "God Bless Whoever Sent You", rank with some of the best of the time, ticket the cd in! Should the cd be in an old school soul music collection is not the question, the question is, is this cd an already out of print cd, waiting for remaining copies to sell? If so, what then? As we see when cds go out of print, then out ofstock, not worth the risk of not buying while the buying is good. Buy now!

Funny Man Andy Griffith.......2007-05-08
This is some real humor from the past by a guy that only can put pain in your sides from laughing at his brand of explaining things. Highly recommend it!
Clean humor.......2007-03-12
This makes me laugh when I listen to it and when I think about it. It is acceptable for all audiances---clean and a simple down-home type comedy. I would like to see and hear more like it. ---Kenneth Whitman

What it was was football, is there a part 3?.......2006-08-20
Is there a part 3 to what it was was football? I ordered this CD expecting the entire track. It said part 1 & 2, but I've heard this track before and not everything was on this CD. Can someone help??
Down-home country humor at its very best.......2003-11-27
Everyone knows Andy Griffith from The Andy Griffith Show, but many today may not be aware of the range of this man's talent as an actor, comedian, and all-around entertainer. This album collects a number of Andy's funny stories and songs taken from a series of recordings he made in the 1950s and early 1960s. The material itself is an almost vaudevillian mix of memorable treats. Griffith's natural penchant for telling hilarious, down-home stories actually jump-started his whole career. The most familiar Andy Griffith recording was his first one, recorded live at an insurance convention in 1952; as the story goes, he essentially thought up the whole routine during a 45-minute drive from Chapel Hill to Raleigh. "What it Was, Was Football" is classic Southern humor that had his audience rolling in the aisles, and it is as funny today as it was decades ago. Colonial released the recording, it sold over a million copies, and Andy Griffith soon found himself working for the Columbia label, putting out a number of albums over the next twelve years. What It Was, Was Football is simply hilarious, as Griffith assumes the role of a country bumpkin describing his first experience watching the game of football. Explaining things in simplistic, countrified terms went over big up North of the Mason-Dixon line, but Andy never forgot, betrayed, or belittled his North Carolina roots.
The strength of this CD is the comedy bits, but there are also several songs included for your enjoyment. The album opens up with The Fishin' Hole: yes, there are actual lyrics to the theme song of The Andy Griffith Show, and you can hear them right here. Cindy and Flop Eared Mule are bluegrass-oriented tracks meant to entertain, while The Midnight Special reveals the kind of true singing talent this man has always possessed. Of course, Griffith's ingenious storytelling is the star of this collection. I suppose much of this would be called stand-up comedy, but Andy tells his stories as if he is sitting on the porch at home entertaining a few good friends. Two of the better tracks found here consist of Andy's unique, folksy recounting of Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet, but he also tickles the funny bone explaining opera in Opera Carmen and ballet in Swan Lake. He goes on to describe the history of The Discovery of America and Andy and Cleopatra in a manner you surely won't find in any textbook. He also offers up two love poems, one called Togetherness and the other dedicated To The Lovely Juanita Beasley. If you need some help sparkin' that sweetheart of yours, you might want to try a few lines from these poems yourself (although they should prove much more effective down here in the South than up North).
The roots of Mayberry's Sheriff Andy Taylor can be found right here in these early comedy recordings of one of America's premiere storytellers, so everyone who loves The Andy Griffith Show (and who doesn't?) should really enjoy this CD. Andy Griffith truly was and is an American Original. This is good old country humor at its best, an album the whole family, from the youngest lad to the oldest gentleman, can heartily enjoy.

Album Description
Contemporary, fun, educational and heartwarming, Milkshake's debut recording "Happy Songs" is a potpourri of activity songs, upbeat inspirational rock songs and lullabies released on Deck Party Music. Milkshake's original songs are based in the pop-rock genre, and influenced by both the years spent performing tuneful, melodic music in their rock band alter ego Love Riot, and the classic sounds of great groups like the Beatles.
Customer Reviews:
Very Enjoyable.......2006-08-05
One of my daughter's friends 'really' introduced us to Milkshake. I'm surprised we didn't put 2+2 together since we are ardent XM Kid listeners and they play a lot of songs from Milkshake. I guess for some reason we got them mixed up with Scribble Monster. Anyway, we realized that "Happy Songs" was their song and bought this CD and the newer one too.
Overall, the music is top notch. The girls dance to it and enjoy it. I like the newer CD the best, but this one is very good too.
Fun for Kids and Parent's too.......2006-03-23
I'm not a fan of music for kids that parent's can't enjoy as well: case in point being anything by Barney. Milkshake is lots of fun. My kids (2, 5 and 7) always request "Scared" which they refer to as "the Scary song." I particularly enjoy "Goodnight Moon," and yes, it does reference the book. "Fingers & Toes" is lots of happy, peppy fun about hands and feet and counting! I highly recommend it for fun at home and in the car!
A MUST- HAVE!.......2006-03-10
My daughter is addicted to both Milkshake albums and I recommend them both highly. Really fun lyrics with fanciful sound effects (birds tweeting, bells ringing, etc). I find that they are the first albums that I reach for as well. Lisa Mattthews has a "Sheryl Crowe"-like sound which is refreshingly contemporary for kids music.
Come on along, buy some Happy Songs!!!.......2005-01-13
This album is the perfect mix for families. Notice I didn't say "for KIDS", I said for FAMILIES!! As an avid music listener, I was dreading having kids and having to listen to that purple dinosaur or other saccharine aural pacifiers, but Milkshake has saved my ears (halleluyah!). My 2.6 year old LOVES both albums and I enjoy listening to them too. Happy Songs is the perfect blend of hit songs (the title track has graced the XMKids Top Thirteen Under Thirteen for a good long time), silly songs (Anyone for some yummy critter fritters in "Breakfast Time"?) and good quality melodies that rival the likes of Jewel and Ani DiFranco. Do yourself and your kids a favor, buy both Milkshake CD's, force them to listen to them once through and you'll be chucking those dinosaur CD's out the window [ED: Author does NOT condone littering] in no time at all.
Happy songs cd by Milkshake.......2004-11-04
I have both of Milkshake's cd's, Happy Songs and the new one, Bottle of Sunshine, and I love them. My four year old is constantly singing and dancing to them, and has been enjoying Milkshake since she was two. I, too, know all of the words to the songs, and enjoy listening to them (unlike some other children's music which is not as pleasing to the ears of parents). I highly recommend both cd's.

Umph's=Greatness.......2006-12-02
Tyler, clearly you don't much about good musicianship. This band, especially the guitarists are the some of the best musicians around today. Umphrey's is not trying to be anybody, that is the most inaccurate statement i've heard in awile. In fact it's the opposite, they blend soo many different styles and genres, from blues to jazz to reggae to rock, that you cannot put a finger on their music. They can play anything and they are the tightest band around right now. Go see them live and you will be amazed and don't listen to "tyler"
Unimpressive.......2006-03-11
I saw Umphrey's McGee at the Chicago theatre and have to say I was a little disappointed. I hadn't heard their music before but had heard good reviews. Unfortunately, I can't say I was overly impressed. Here are my impressions - their music is just O.K. and the vocals (what little they have) are horrendous - off key and painful to listen to. During the show I couldn't help but get the impression that Umphrey's was trying to follow in the footsteps of the dead and phish - the music and attitude is undeniably "phishesque". Perhaps Umphrey's is trying to cash in on the void left by their absence, but truth is Umphrey's just isn't at the same level. The extraordinary musical talent found in Phish and the Dead is noticeably missing in Umphrey's. All that is left is a somewhat impressive light show and a theatre saturated with patchouli oil and herb. This is probably why the vast majority of their crowd consisted of high schoolers. Eager to be there for the "experience" and atmosphere, they simply didn't care that the music was sub-par or just didn't know any better.
better once youve heard it live.......2006-01-06
but there are so many tracks that are so much better live. dont get me wrong, i love this cd, but it dosent compare to live versions of most of the songs. all of the songs are great, but when played live, even when they arent jammed on are just better than whats on the cd. for instance, uncle wally on this cds okay but not as good as it is live and when its played electric.
all in all a great album. nothing too fancy and white mans moccosins are still some of my favorite um songs even with all their new stuff out
Keepin in Real.......2005-12-17
Sexy album. I have seen Umphreys a number of times, and have quite a bit of their music, and this is my go to when I want some Umphreys. I like it better than Anchor Drops (which is also great), because it feels a little more open and free, AD can get dense and heavy at times (which is good, because it doesn't just sound like more of the same).
I like the use of acoustics as lead guitars in Uncle Wally and Water. Andy's Last Beer is a song anyone will like. Ringo, Roulette and Hurt Bird Bath are very very sexy, but my favorite song (which I have yet to hear live) is 2nd Self, mainly because of the last minute of so, which is a nice little guitar jam...BUT IT, LISTEN TO IT!
(and read the liner notes, they're fun)
Not your average white band.......2005-07-29
"Local Band Does O.K." is far superior than "Anchor Drops" in my view. If you liked AD, you'll want LBDOK.
Some have compared UM to Phish, but I don't hear it. These guys ain't about one guy as much as Phish.

The violin is an instrument few people would associate with Cuban music. Yet, beginning in the 1940s, Orquesta Aragon made massed fiddles synonymous with a dance-music style called charanga, which added a dose of urban sophistication to the more pastoral, flute-led danzon genre. Orquesta Aragon rode a gliding, polished sound based on the interplay between the string section and the effervescent flute of Richard Egües, more recently heard backing Senegalese singer Cheik Lô on his breakaway disc, Bambay Gueej. Though charanga would seem to be at odds with tougher, more rhythmically charged Cuban dance music, the Orquesta put the mambo-derived cha-cha on the map with Egües's composition "El Boduguero," which Nat "King" Cole later took to the top of the American charts. Famous members of this world-class ensemble include Rafael Lay, who arranged the songs with Egües, and Buena Vista Social Club alumnus Pio Leyva. The band remains together, but this disc traces the glory days of the late 1940s to the early 1950s. --Bob Tarte.
Customer Reviews:
The Real Thing!.......2001-08-16
The Orquesta Aragon, the original Orquesta Aragon, was the ultimate dancing orchestra during the cha-cha-cha period. None other, not even Fajardo y sus Estrellas, could compete with the Aragon's style. But, unfortunately, there are too many CD's around that pretend to the Aragon's fame, without its ability. Making matters worse, the new Orquesta Aragon (which doesn't sound at all like the original) is recording many albums too. But THIS IS THE REAL THING! Buy it and enjoy every old song in the original style.

A portion of all proceeds from this release will be donated to the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund.

Not Bad, Not Great.......2006-04-13
A passable collection of covers; some are excellent, a few totally mutilate the originals, and the remainder are mediocre imitations of Elliott.
To be honest, I've heard work that's as good or better from unsigned artists. If your interested, you can find Elliott covers aplenty

funky and beautiful tribute to the late and dear Elliott.......2006-03-28
Wonderful compilation that makes me feel closer to Eliott Smith's angst, pain and joy.
i still miss Elliott..........2006-03-01
this cd makes me miss Elliott - we lost him too soon. I like this cd very much but it is still sad to know that he is gone. this seems to be a heartfelt tribute and I don't understand how anyone could fault it. it makes me question their motivation to fault a sincere tribute from a small indie label when this tribute benefits the Elliott Smith foundation.
Well, they had good intentions.......2006-02-27
Maybe if they had chosen bands with more character that would cover an Elliott Smith song with a little flavor this cd would have been better. I listened to It 3 times all the way through just to make sure I wasnt missing something, and I wanst. Nothing worth hearing here. at least they had good intentions.
From Portland with love.......2006-02-16
Tribute albums tend to fail their intended audience time and again, mainly because the audience they target are purist fans of the original work. More often than not, these fans view any reworking of the material as a form of sacrilege. Sadly, this is already the case for what is in reality, an outstanding tribute to Elliott Smith, "To:Elliott/From:Portland." Reading the message boards on various Smith fan sites, it doesn't take long to see that this release is loathed by his fan base. The crux of their collective wrath seems to be aimed at the non-sparse production, the reverse of which was a Smith trademark. Unfortunately, they are missing the real worth of this CD - that he was a remarkable songwriter, and given that fact, even relatively unknown artists (all of the bands on this disc are from his hometown of Portland) have a hard time sounding bad when given such a great song to work with. The CD kicks off with the best known band of the bunch, The Decemberists, and their cover of Clementine, and it's performed
almost as sparse as Elliott's original - acoustic guitar, harmonica, and the sound of a crackling fire in the background. The fire is a great effect - and reminds me how few of today's songs would actually sound so good at night in the woods with the smell of burning brush and branch permeating the air. From there, the production gets more lavish as each of the artists takes on the task of honoring his work. In spite of this, these artists do a fantastic job with Smith's material - and for people who were not a part of the near lunatic fanaticism that made up Smith's fan base while he was alive, I think they will be drawn even closer to his original work. Much like one of Elliott's biggest inspirations, The Beatles, a great song still sounds like a great song - even if performed by a guy at the corner pub. Unless you live in Portland, you won't know many (if any) of these artists, with the exception of the Decemberists and Eric Matthews - but please don't let that stop you from discovering this fine CD.
You'll thank yourself later for owning it.

With Gypsy in My Soul, Connie Evingson goes from cool Beatles to hot jazz. As a follow-up to her Let It Be Jazz, Evingson pays tribute to one of the most distinctive and wonderful sounds in jazz history, the French hot clubs of guitarist Django Reinhardt in the 1930s and '40s. Assisting her are three different bands, Parisota Hot Club and Clearwater Hot Club from her Minnesota home and Pearl Django from Seattle. All have the guitar-led sound just like Django Reinhardt, while Clearwater and Pearl Django add the violin that also helped make the Django sound distinctive (in his case, most famously by Stephane Grappelli). (Parisota substitutes a clarinet, which was a lesser-known aspect of the Django sound.) The groups' sound is also supplemented by accordion (Dan Chouinard and Patrick Harrison), vibes (Susan Pascal), and other instruments. Gypsy in My Soul isn't a note-by-note re-creation: Django didn't use vocals (Evingson provides lyrics to his "Anouman" music for "Django's Premonition" and she sings Susannah McCorkle's lyrics to his "Nuages"), and though he did perform American standards, those wouldn't have included Sting's "Until" or the Nat "King" Cole hit "Nature Boy." But it's a fun listen on its own terms, and might open up a new audience for Django. --David Horiuchi
Album Description
"Hot Club Swing" in the style of Django Reinhardt, with vocals! Jazz vocalist Connie Evingson sings with three different Hot Club groups: Pearl Django, Parisota Hot Club and Clearwater Hot Club. This CD features tunes typical of the genre ("Caravan", "Night and Day", "I'm Confessin"), Django originals ("Nuages", "Anouman"), and some unusual offerings by Sting ("Until") and Dizzy Gillespie ("Dizzy Atmosphere").

Gypsy Jazz lives.......2005-11-07
Connie Evingson has never sounded better in this tasty collection of gypsy infused tunes. Backed by three different groups, this unapologitically romantic effort is full of infectious rhythms and solos. Whether it is a song aimed at the heart or the feet, Gypsy in my Soul will lift your spirits. Makes you want to grab your Gitanes and head for a late night cafe.

One hit wonder redux...................................................2007-03-07
Did any of the people who rated this c.d. actually get it . Apparently not.
This is an English import of Angel Baby , the AMERICAN original version , plus the English edit , plus a 1999 remake. The rest of the c.d. are several failed follow ups to Angel Baby circa 1960-1961 and nine other songs done in
1999. Why the other reviewers didn't grasp that is hard to understand. Overall two stars for a great piece of rock history .If you are a collector
it's worth it .
A TRUE COLLECTORS DREAM.......2002-10-22
THIS C.D. IS EXCELLENT. ROSIE HAMLIN, THE LEAD SINGER OF THE GROUP HAD A UNIQUE ANGELIC VOICE SIMILIAR TO THAT OF KATHY YOUNG.IT'S REALLY A SHAME THAT SHE'S ONLY REMEMBERED FOR HER #1 HIT "ANGEL BABY" , AND NOT FOR ANY OF HER OTHER RECORDINGS. (BAD MANAGEMENT PERHAPS). THIS C.D. ALSO FEATURES HER FOLLOW-UP BALLAD "LONELY BLUE NIGHTS" AND OTHER BEAUTIFUL BALLADS THAT DIDN'T GET THE AIR PLAY THEY DESERVED.HER SINGING GENRE WAS SIDE BY SIDE WITH KATHY YOUNG AND THE INNOCENTS. IN FACT SHE DOES A VERSION OF "A THOUSAND STARS", WHICH WAS A #1 FOR KATHY YOUNG. BOTH ROSIE AND KATHY HAD MASS APPEAL WITH 60'S L.A. CHICANO KIDS.IT WAS A STYLE THAT LEANED TOWARDS POP AND RTHYM AND BLUES .A STYLE THAT LENT ITSELF TO THEIR DANCING. IT WAS A STYLE IN ITS OWN CATEGORY, LIKE SUNNY AND THE SUNLINERS "TALK TO ME". THIS C.D. IS A TRUE COLLECTOR'S DREAM THAT WILL BRING BACK ALL KINDS OF MEMORIES.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
Angel Baby Redux.......2002-03-13
I might have rated this disc a solid 5 stars except that the thread of "puppy love" which runs through most of these 23 tracks becomes, for this listener at least, a bit much after the first 15 or so.
Having said that, I must affirm that "puppy love" has, perhaps, never been captured so poignantly, so sweetly, by anyone before or after Rosie and her originals.
The stand out track here, of course, is "Angel Baby" and there are three versions to choose from on this disc - the original US cut from 1961, a previously unreleased 1999 version, and the 1961 UK version. You will have to decide which you think is best. I tend to prefer the original. This is a simple but timeless song. From the extensive liner notes comes this in regards to the origin of "Angel Baby":
". . .a song she had scribbled on the back of her notebook as a sophomore at San Diego High School. "It started out as a poem," she says, "I had a puppy love crush on a young boy, the very first boyfriend I ever had right before I joined the Originals. I wrote a poem explaining my feelings but was too shy to show it to him so I turned it into a song. My aunt had taught me a four chord progression from listening to songs like 'Maybe' by The Chantels and I realised that I could put 'Angel Baby' to those chords. . ."
With its innocent lyrics (she was only 15 at the time) and twangy, almost dissonant, guitar intro coupled with Rosie's plaintive squeak, "Angel Baby" is, well. . . simply a dreamy piece of rock n' roll.
This seminal track (apparently a favorite of John Lennon)in addition to the other fun cuts on this disc - such as the twangy lament of "Lonely Blue Nights" and the almost calypso "Why did You Leave Me?", for instance - make this a must have collection for anyone interested in oldies, female vocalists, and, yes, "puppy love".
