As the follow-up to their unusually experimental Destroyer (nonetheless one of Kiss's best albums ever), Rock and Roll Over, released the same year, contains more conventional three-chord material. That's not a bad thing, since Kiss at their peak arguably did three-chord arena-rock better than anyone else. "Calling Dr. Love" was a hit single, as was the surprisingly bittersweet (for Kiss) "Hard Luck Woman." "I Want You" is an unnerving mix of tenderness and tension, while "Take Me" is understandably urgent. Although this was material that would become conventional over the years--thanks to legions of copycat bands--it still sounds good today, probably because whether they're being sleazy or sweet, Kiss sound like they mean it. -- Genevieve Williams --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

This Mark Knopfler-dominated release from Dire Straits (as if there were any other kind) features the ringing guitar work and clever lyrics we've come to expect from the band over time. The dark, moody gravel of Knopfler's voice mutters, mumbles, and muses through songs like "Telegraph Road" and "Private Investigations" and virtually giggles through the silly patter of "Industrial Disease." The title track and "It Never Rains" are solid, if unremarkable offerings from the band that has come to represent the epitome of one man's vision of good ol' rock & roll. --L.A. Smith

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Album..........2007-06-19

...from one of my favorite bands of all time.Incredibly played and recorded.A must!

5 out of 5 stars Huddy.......2007-03-18

For me (only my opinion) the 2 songs Telegraph road and Private investigations alone are worth this CD. These are 2 amazing musical arrangements that is really really hard to find these days. I'm not saying the other tracks are bad. My other favourites are the Title track and "It never rains".
I have been listening to this album for more than 10 years in cassettes and older CD versions. I even tried to get a LP version recently. Then I found this and picked this up recently as this is a remastered one. Believe me when I say this is the best version I have. The sound is full compared to the older CD version and I get an amazing feel when I play it every time. This is a very good remastered version. Highly recommend this remaster to all the quality conscious dire straits fans.

5 out of 5 stars Masterly remastered album!.......2007-03-17

I've had this album for 15 years now (the non-remastered version) and the sound seemed to lack a little punch and excitement. The sound on this new remastered CD is much better than the old version, everything is crystal-clear and exciting - a great improvement! If you love this album but only own a regular CD, I totally recommend this remastered version - it's so much better! I am not stating the obvious here: I also have several remastered Led Zeppelin CDs which, surprisongly, aren't ANY better than the regular versions! Dire Straits' remastered Making Movies album is also much better and clearer than the old recording!

5 out of 5 stars another great release.......2007-02-25

This album was the one I played the most when I was back in school. This was back in 86. I had discovered Dire Straits the previous year (as did alot of people) and i still listen to all of their albums to this day.

'Telegraph Road' tells a great story about the rise of a city. The many solos keep the song interesting and the great lyrics always keep you entranced. Most long songs can be boring or only exercises in ego and pretension. But not this one. This song deserves every minute of its running time. 'Private Investigations' is a nice slow song that reverts to loud quickly. The steady bass drum almost sounds like a heartbeat and the power chords heard here are stinging. The songs after this are almost like a concept album. The city in 'Telegraph Road' is now the setting for the last three songs. Or that's how i always imagined this album.

'Industrial Disease' is one of those strange songs you really don't know what to make of. This is the beginning of many songs with a similar style ('Walk Of Life' and 'The Bug', for example) This song has the same organ sound that almost makes it sound like a country song, if you forget the industrial type lyrics. The song can be amusing but as with many of Mark Knopfler's lyrics there is a element of seriousness underneath. The title track is a bit overlong, but does have a great ending with tympani. It's basically a song about a woman who does not look after herself and 'throws her love to all the strangers/and caution to the wind'. Of course in the next song (It Never Rains)she gets whats coming to her in the worst possible way by being 'taken out to vaudeville valley/with his hand up smothering your screams/ and he screws down in tin pan alley/in the city of a billion dreams..' after which a great guitar solo makes you feel that way.

Powerful stuff from a great band. This is easily 5 stars. Buy this and give it a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Dire Straits' Best Album........2006-11-19

I cant stand why people slam Dire Straits. Dire Straits are a wonderful band as talented as Foreigner and make great music. Love Over Gold is my favorite album from Dire Straits and it has some of the finest songs ever like Telegraph Road and Industrial Disease. Don't listen to the 1 star reviewers and get this album with Foreigner's FOurth Album today.

5 out of 5 stars JC ROCKS!.......2005-12-11

I was fortunate enough to catch John Cafferty and Beaver Brown shortly after the EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS movie came out and they were superb. I also have that soundtrack on vinyl as well as this record on vinyl and find both to be excellent. Do they sound like Springsteen at times?...sure...but so what. I have never been a Springsteen fan but JC and his boys suit me just fine, go figure!

This is good, solid, no-frills rock music. Well played and highly enjoyable. My favorite tracks are TOUGH ALL OVER, SMALL TOWN GIRL and VOICE OF AMERICA'S SON. Good stuff!

3 out of 5 stars The Beaver Brown Band Has Their Moments Too!.......2004-07-09

Following the success of lending the voice to the soundtrack (and movie) of "Eddie and the Cruisers", John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band went on to release their own CD entitled "Tough All Over". The 'Eddie' soundtrack really came out of nowhere to score big and was a huge reason why Eddie and The Cruisers became a cult movie favorite. Around 1984, 80s music was moving away from synthesizers and more of a classic and harder Rock sound was beginning to populate the music landscape. Combine the changes in the music landscape with the boost that Cafferty got from "Eddie and the Cruisers", "Tough All Over" was ready to be a hit. This album does have some nice songs on it and is a pleasant change of pace from many other 80s albums.

The first four songs and sixth song on "Tough All Over" are the best songs. The album kicks off with a song called "Voices of Americas Sons". Sylvester Stallone had become a Cafferty fan during this period as well. He had Cafferty contribute an excellent song to the Rocky IV soundtrack called "Hearts on Fire". He had also had Cafferty do the theme song for the movie "Cobra" - and that song was "Voices of Americas Sons". Like many Cafferty songs, this song has a Bruce Springsteen flare to it Cafferty has great vocals, but it is the keyboards of Bob Cotola and drums of Kenny Jo Silva that shouldn't go unnoticed on this song. I was surprised this song didn't chart better - it is one of the best songs I've heard Cafferty do.

The second song, "Tough All Over" was a song that did garner radio airplay. This song has more of an early 80s feel to it - but Cafferty's vocals also show how the music trend in the 80s was going to more of a classic Rock sound. Once again, kudos to Bob Cotola and Kenny Jo Silva - they really provide some nice keyboards and drumming to compliment the Cafferty vocals.

"C-I-T-Y" is third song. It did get some limited airplay, but not nearly as much as "Tough All Over" got. The Beaver Brown Band once again shines with Cafferty and this time its guitarist Gary Gramolini that deserves a lot of credit. This song has a combination of Blues/R&B and Bruce Springsteen feel to it. This song features some catchy chorus vocals and some nice female background vocals by Janice Pendarvis, Dolette McDonald, and Deborah Malone.

The fourth song is "Where the Action is". This time some nice Bass action by Pat Lupo compliments Gramolini's guitar work. This song has a very different feel. It has much more of a 50s feel to it. In addition, it reminds me a lot of a Cliff Richard song. Songs like this are another reason why Cafferty was able to reach people - he found an audience in an older generation and at the same time connected with the current 80s generation.

Another nice song that is forgotten about on this album is "Strangers in Paradise". While this song has a similar feel to "Voices of Americas Sons", this one shows that Cafferty is a solid songwriter. This song tells a story of someone named 'Billy' as he ages from his teen years (in which he leaves his town) to his young adulthood (when he eventually comes home). This song is another song where I am surprised it didn't get airplay.

The remaining songs are not nearly as strong as the first four songs, but do have their moments. "Dixieland" has very much of a "Dixie" feel to it. "Small Town Girl" is an ok song with another 50s feel to it - I do like the sax intro by Michale Antunes. "More Than Just One of the Boys" is another 50s song that has some nice keyboards by Cotola. This song almost could have been on the "Grease" soundtrack. The weakest song is "Tex Mex" - this almost has a country-like feel to it. It isn't as catchy as the other songs, but it continues to show the diversity that the band brings to this album.

I got my copy of "Tough All Over" back in 1985 when it came out - and I still play it. My album cover is different in that it shows Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band in the middle of a city street. There is no reference to "Eddie and the Cruisers" on the cover of this version. The songs are the same songs. All of the lyrics are included in fold out liner notes - as well as band credits. This is a good album - probably the best album done by the band. They really weren't able to continue to ride the wave of "Eddie" following this album, but this collection has stood the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars The much delayed follow up to the Eddie soundtrack.......2004-06-24

Having been one of the early believers in the movie soundtrack, I was very interested in the follow up. When it was announced as an upcoming release at our local record shop, I immediately began bugging the guy for information. Originally slated for a late 1984 release, the belated success of the soundtrack album made the record company push the date back to allow the first album full command of the chart. Tough All Over was delayed until mid-1985, but when it came out, it was quite a pleasant surprise. Having lived with this album in my car tape deck for the bulk of that summer, I'm still surprised at how tepid the reception was for it. This was a really great album without a "Betty Lou" clinker anywhere to be found on it. After this the creative trough kind of ran dry for John Cafferty, but anyone who liked the Eddie & the Cruisers soundtrack would do well to pick up a copy of this album. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars 1985 sound meets early 60's lyrics........2004-04-24

From what I've read, John Cafferty's claim to fame was the voice of Eddie from Eddie & The Cruisers', and singing on that soundtrack. I recently got a buch of casettes for 50 cents at a thrift store, this being one of them.

Since I'd never heard of him until very recently, I didn't expect much, figuring it couldn't be very good. What an idiot I was! This is a certainly underrated effort that sounds a lot like Bruce Springsteen's material of the same era, but maybe a little more lighthearted and retro.

In fact, try to imagine if synthesized arena rock had existed in 1962. I'm sure this is pretty much what it would sound like.

1. Voice of America's Sons -- This Survivor meets Gary U.S. Bonds uptempo opener is one of the harder rockers. Sets the mood for the rest of the album with its fun yet working class type lyrics. Also one of the more 80's sounding songs.

2. The title track, which was apparently a minor hit, happens to be my personal favorite. Mid tempo synthesized pop/rocker about Springsteen-ish themes of a "pretty little working girl," as well as being laid off and tough times, hence the title. I don't know how this failed to be a hit, but it's no less good than anything that was.

3. C-I-T-Y -- A more blues tinged somewhat hard rock tune about working in the city. Not quite as catchy as the previous two songs, but still a d*mn good one.

4. Where the Action is -- A more fun, medium rocker about getting off work, wanting to have fun and go...well, the title says it all. Also has a slight late 50s/early 60s summertime feel to it.

5. Dixieland -- Mid tempo anthemic semi ballad about packing up and taking a vacation. Sounds like something from the "River" era Springsteen.

6. Strangers in Paradise -- Another uptempo, underrated synth rock masterpiece. 80's sounding pop tune about John telling the story from the third person of a guy and girl falling in love and of their lives.

7. Small Town Girl -- The saxophone driven soft power ballad is nothing short of excellent. A sweet story of John and a girl he's just met and gone crazy over. This is yet another song that really sounds like an 80's version of the doo-wop era.

8. More Than Just One of the Boys -- Another fun uptempo, romantic, somewhat love song. Not quite as memorable as the others, but no less good. Reminds me a little of the lighter side of Mellencamp.

9. Tex-Mex (Crystal Blue) -- After 8 good songs, this closer is the only one I can't get into much. It's the only slow ballad, which is a romantic love song with a country tinge. It sounds quite old-fashioned too, but without the fun sound that many oldies had. It's also a bit too long, but certainly not terrible.

Basically, the best way I can describe it is the lyrics and vocal style sound early 60's, whereas the music and production sounds 80's. As much as that combo seems like it wouldn't fit, it really does, and would very likely appeal to fans of both eras. DON'T overlook this album just because it wasn't popular!

5 out of 5 stars Foot Stomping, Hip Swaying, Rock&Roll !!!.......2003-11-27

John Cafferty and Beaver Brown rock out on this album! Filled with both hard driving rock and roll anthems, and soft, slow, romantic ballads, this CD is sure to have something for every rock music fan! American made rock and roll at its finest!!! Loaded with hits such as "C I T Y", "Small Town Girl", and the title track "Tough All Over" it is a must have CD!

5 out of 5 stars Fogerty.......2007-06-10

Great value. If you are into the 60s' and 70s' you will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars Zanz Still Can't Dance.......2006-11-25

Everyone's missed the point: John is mining the various genres of songcraft. Deja Vu is exactly what it is intended to be: It's yet another song about another war...ho hum. There's always another war. The bass lines are too close to Who Will Stop the Rain for pure happenstance. Fogerty knows what he is creating. Check the cover photo. Now...Sugar Sugar, the number two song, just happens to be the title of the song that kept his greatest song, Green River, from the number one spot. That's why it is number two on this album. John never forgets! And Zantz still can't dance! There is a punk rock song, She's Got Baggage. This isn't by chance. John's too smart for that. Listen to the disco strings of Radar. Nobody's Here Anymore is Dire Staits because it's supposed to be Dire Straits. It's all part of the concept, just like Down on the Corner was part of Willy and the Poorboys concept. Rhubarb Pie is as pessimistic as anything John has ever written. Wicked Old Witch is Creedence for those who need more of that stuff. In the Garden is Jimi! It's also a commentary on all that 60's euphoria. In the garden, indeed! Fogerty has given us a concept album that summarizes the last 30 years. Take it or leave it. He has been doing this all along. God bless him.

3 out of 5 stars Where is that John Fogerty Sound?.......2006-09-30

John Fogerty trys to sound like everybody else on this album with mixed results. Only when he falls back upon the sound we love for then does he shine.

Here is a breakdown of my thoughts on the songs:

1) Deja Vu - a courageous & brilliant song about the war in Iraq. he took a lot of flack for writing this, but when John speaks out that is when he shines. I love this song.

2) Sugar Sugar - this is a wonderful, catchy tune and much better than Joy of My Life.

3) She's Got Baggage - never liked this song. It is not John. He is trying to sound like the Ramones and the result is one the worst songs he has done.

4) Radar - this is a better song. I give though only 7/10. A decent rocker, but he can do much better.

5) Honey Do - an offbeat song about marriage. It again copies another style. This time Carl Perkins. It is ok, but not great either.

6) Nobody's Here Anymore - Fogerty trys to do Dire Straits here. It is a pretty good song, but the lyrics are weak. Since when is talking on a cell phone or listening to headphones going to another dimension. Fogerty is reaching here to make a social commentary song, but just comes off sounding old.

7) I Will Walk With You - a nice song for his daughter, but too country for me.

8) Rhubard Pie - this bluesy song grows on you. I like it.

9) Wicked Old Witch - this is like an old CCR tune. One of the best songs on the cd, but too short, less than 3 minutes.

10) In the Garden - Don't like this. It sounds so dated. Fogerty is doing a cross between Cream & Hendrix. Also the drumming is way too loud.

John Fogerty took 2 and half years to write this and to me it seems like a concept album where he is going back and doing some CCR, but mostly other artists sound. I never play this album anymore. I listened to it many times, hoping it would grow on me, but it didn't.

It has its moments, but it not a good album. I also got the bootleg of Hoodoo at the same time and found that album, despite its poor sound, a much better album and that was scraped.

John needs to do what he does best - swamp rock. I hope next time he does that again.

4 out of 5 stars Other stuff to check out.......2006-06-21

I am a huge fan of John Fogerty's solo music and his music with CCR. If you enjoy his roots-rock style then I strongly recommend that you check out the following:
1) 24 Hours A Day by The Bottle Rockets
2) Chooglin': A Tribute To The Songs Of John Fogerty
3) Banjos and Sunshine by Sixty Acres
4) Trace by Son Volt

5 out of 5 stars Should be 6 stars..........2006-05-13

This is a great album from beginning to end. I love all kinds of music, from Hard Death Metal to Classical. This album is just happy, you cant help but sing along and smile! Songs like Sugar Sugar and Rhubarb Pie inject themselves into your soul with delight! He even rocks out with She Got Baggage, what a catchy, modern tune! Buy this CD, and let your lips rise in a juicy smile.

P.S. His previous album, Blue Moon Swamp might even be better!

-- Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Great sound.......2007-06-26

Great in-your-face production job on this album. Peter's drumming never sounded heavier than on this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of their Best!.......2007-05-30

Hands down, one of their best records. How can you not like these ferocious riffs, pounding drums and Ace's fretwork? The songwriting was good here as well. "Mr. Speed" "I Want You" and "Makin' Love" are the best of any Paul songs in the 70s. "Dr. Love" "Ladies Room" and "Love'em and Leave'em" are Gene's gems from the disc, and you gotta love Peter's "Baby Driver" and "Hard Luck Woman" vocals. The only way this record could have been any better is if they had Ace sing a song. The sound goes back to the "Dressed to Kill" sound after the intricately produced "Destroyer" masterpiece. But it rocks all the harder because I think Kiss enjoyed working with Eddie Kramer...and it shows on this album.

5 out of 5 stars My First KISS album.......2007-02-26

I received this album when I was 3 years old in 1976, and to this day it is still one of my favorite albums. Sure, the lyrics may be kind of cheesy, but this is still one of the greatest rock bands of all time. If you are a true KISS fan, you will appreciate the evolution of the group from album to album.

3 out of 5 stars Compare a Rolls Royce to a Yugo.......2006-11-22

This is the comparison I use for the old Kiss,pre-'77 to new Kiss. This cd was an entertainment in the absurdly funny and hillariously childish antics of poorly constructed songs. Ezrin left and too bad because the songs got overly simplistic. The lyrics dealt with nothing but female anatomy and left nothing for the imagination. I will admit this to be a very low point in Kisstory. Love Gun was somewhat better and Dynasty and Unmasked even better even though there was fighting amongst themselves and Criss was even a part of those recordings. The stage show and women took favoritism while good songs would have to wait.

Included was an array of fun things to complete the circus ,including stickers, a cartoon like look, an anti-rock theme and an empty feeling for the real fans of Kiss.

Product Description

After The James Gang and before Rocky Mountain Way, Joe Walsh moved to Colorado and formed a short-lived group called Barnstorm with bassist Kenny Passarelli and drummer Joe Vitale. The result is this remarkable and intriguing 1972 album most often referred to as Walshs debut solo effort. What it truly is, though, is a richly textured acoustic/electric album that ebbs and flows with sounds and segues ranging from spooky to sweet, plaintive to psychedelic, from melodically enticing to ballbusting organ-guitar crunch rock. Its less than 40 minutes in length, but by its end the listener feels like he/she has been taken on a musical adventure of the best kind. The album didnt produce any hits per se, but charted in the Top 100, gave the world the first version of Turn To Stone, and resulted in a uniquely barnstorming national tour, wherein Joe Walsh reconfirmed if there ever was any doubt - his stature as a premiere musician. Joe Walsh next hit with Rocky Mountain Way and in 1975 added his unique energy to The Eagles, but this landmark early album is as good as anything the rocker did before or since. 1. Here We Go 2. 1 out of 5 stars "Creative" editing ruins this CD.......2006-05-16

This is one of my favorite records, and I've been trying for years to get it on CD. I have the original vinyl, but those Dunhill pressings were never much good. So, I was very happy to see that the record was reissued on CD. Unfortunately, there's some tape hiss, but most distressing, track 3, "One and One" has been edited to fade out with a long pause between it and the next tune "Giant Bohemoth". On the original vinyl, these two tunes seque into each with no fadeout of any kind. The edit on the reissue totally disrupts the "flow" of the album. Very, very disappointing.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE******************
Apparently this reissue was initially released using a set of incorrectly marked master tapes. The reissuing company has now found the correct masters, have cut a new digital remaster and is now circulating the corrected issue of this record.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible sound quality!.......2006-04-15

I'm not sure which edition Wayne Klein is referring to in his review but it certainly wasn't this one. As noted by another reviewer, Hip-O Select completely dropped the ball on this one, using the wrong master tapes to produce this CD. It is LOADED with tape hiss, so much so that I could not get through the entire disc before turning it off. I have been in touch with Hip-O's parent company (Universal) and they acknowledged the mistake, saying that a vastly improved edition with the correct master tapes will soon be in stores, but after nearly a year it has yet to appear and when it does the consumer may not be able to distinguish between the two editions. It's hard to understand a mistake like this not being caught before production. But it's worse that a company would allow unsuspecting consumers to buy this garbage and then not rectify the matter after all this time. Great music, bad business practice. I'm keeping my vinyl!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Walsh album finally available on CD again.......2006-03-13

Atmospheric and fascinating Joe Walsh's Barnstorm (aptly named)brought forth this terrific album after Walsh left the James Gang. Everything from the inspired opener "Here We Go" to the unusual "Birdcall Morning". From the instrumental "Giant Bohemoth" which slides right into the stunning "Mother Says" the album doesn't miss a beat.

The biggest song here "Turn to Stone" would show up again in a slightly inferior version on "So What?" but the original primordial monster is here. Featuring crunchy a guitar lick and a stunning guitar solo Walsh never got this experimental again. The album closes out with the acoustic guitar/haronica driven "Comin' Down" which provides a tranquil close to a magical album.

Like the 2005 Japanese re-release the magical sound qualty of the original recording has been retained. This is, in fact, the best the album has ever sounded (although honestly I can't compare it to the original Mobile Fidelity release since I never had it but have had the other import versions). Walsh never got better as a songwriter than here (although he came close with another couple of strong albums such as "The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get"). A marvelous reissue, this classic album only lacks bonus tracks and outtakes which would have made this classy package complete.

5 out of 5 stars Staple my Lips to my Heart.......2007-03-17

I bought this album on cassette when it came out in 92 and wore it down to the point that it was warped. I was in high school shortly after that and never went around to getting another copy. Thankfully I came back and realized that I wanted to listen to something that I hadn't heard in a long time. This was only about fifteen years later. Thank god I picked this copy up on CD. What a raw album. Tales of heartbreak, longing, and just plain fun. If you really want to rock out, listen to "Staples", "Velvet Roof", and "Saving Grace". But if you really want to listen to a great song, pop in "Mineral". Awesome. I love Buffalo Tom, and this by far, is their best album.

5 out of 5 stars A Close Friend.......2006-01-19

This is one of the most deceptively simple-sounding albums you'll ever hear. On first listen, the songs sound melodic, pleasant enough; you may feel an undercurrent of urgency in the rhythms, but nothing overwhelming. That's OK. You just wait. The Toms have more in store for you. Let Me Come Over is the type of album that only gets better with each listen.
The songs on this album are all first rate, from the blistering opening track "Staples" to "Larry"'s heart-wrenching feedback fadeout to the straight-ahead ass kicking rock of "Velvet Roof" and "Saving Grace" to the lonely, wistfully beautiful, hopelessly romantic "Frozen Lake." Every song is exceptional, but what makes the album greater than the sum of its songs is the remarkable track sequencing. This is not a "concept album" nor do the songs have any thematic link that I am aware
of, but the way each track perfectly complements the last couldn't have been accidental.
Let Me Come Over is also a shining example of how to incorporate personal, introspective lyrics into songs without ever coming across as pretentious or self-pitying. Bill Janovitz uses universal imagery to help the listener relate to, rather than just hear, his lyrics. When he sings "I feel so small/ underneath it all/ but I'm closing in on it" on "Taillights Fade," you know he's not just some wimp in the dumps. This music tells you that yeah, life isn't so hot right now, but hey, you're not alone.
This album has really aged well, to the point that I now consider it more of a close friend than a rock album. I highly recommend Let Me Come Over to anyone who needs a friend, or a great rock album, or a close friend and a great rock album in one.

5 out of 5 stars blazing.........2004-05-31

to see bt live around the time of this recording was to experience an event. The venues were lifted, dropped, rattled. The kids filed out, grinning, shaken and ringing. IF you were there too, then you know...
This album is about as good as fuzzbox power pop gets. If you were around listening to pop music in the early 90's, and missed them, ya better keep your mouth shut about it, cause your canon is incomplete. Yes, there were a few really good bands then. BT was one of them.
I blew out a set of headphones with this.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive opus from the best 3-piece band ever!.......2004-05-29

Let Me Come Over is Buffalo Tom's best work. The songs are variously sweet, tragic, and melodic, but also heartbreakingly relatable tales of life, love, and loss. Its blend of jangling guitars, distortion, and lyrics (laced with the morose-hope that is so uniquely Buffalo Tom) stood as a powerful counterpoint to the "grunge" sound coming from Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Buffalo Tom represent the culmination of growth and perspective that brought us to the era of post-punk and emo.

A must-have for any serious collector of influential music, or fan of indi-rock, it stands the test of time as the best album by a trio ever. Buffalo Tom is the band that gave me permission to musically grow up, and for that I thank them.

5 out of 5 stars An album that speaks to your moods.......2002-11-01

Yes its true, this is one of the greatest albums of the nineties, and it has stood the test of time, I've had in nearly constant rotation for 11, yes 11 years and it still is fresh and speaks to any mood I'm in. When I want to jump up and feel an adrenaline rush I throw on Daryl or Staples, when I want to smile about the wonders of the world I can listen to Porchlight and frozen lake, and when I feel down the voices, the tone, and the composition lift me, this is a fantastic album you should own, trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Brought rock back to its roots.......2003-05-01

This is the Classic Thorogood release that brought rock back to its roots when it was so sorely needed! Raw energy and an unabashed singing style that is just so fun to sing along with.

Turn it up and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Raw.......1999-10-27

Thorogoods raw guitar sound and ample emotion on this CD make it one worth buying. It sets the tone for things that should have come but never seemed to break out on later albums. If you buy one Thorogood album, this should be the one. A staple of any blues or rock collection. Bouncing back and forth between the hard rocking (Move it on Over/who do you love) to the mournfull (The Sky is Crying) to the emotional (I'm Just Your Good Thing). This album runs the ladder of emotions up and down.

5 out of 5 stars True, pure, Thorogood blues........1999-03-16

This is the kind of strait hard blues that started it all. "so much trouble" and "cocaine blues" are awesome tracks, so if you like ol' lonesome george you'll love this cd. peace.

4 out of 5 stars An emblematic seventies band.......2004-08-04

Consider just these songs : Rollin ' down highway , Beside you , the fields of joy and the driggerman. Only for these four songs the CD is widely recommended .
Since I was a teenager in this age , I can swear you the magnificent sound the original rhytms that characterized this ensemble . Beside you, Colour my world (Chicago) , Rain (Uriah Heep) , Changes (Black Sabbath) and Don ' t be a hero (Jim Capaldi) may be the greatest rock ballads in the seventies. Superb work if you are hard fan of rock hidden treasures!

5 out of 5 stars My search is over.......2002-01-20

My husband had the "Roll Over" album on 8 track and we have been looking for a CD version for years. We no longer have an 8 track player and haven't been able to listen to our favorite "Beside You". I am so happy this has been brought out on CD version.

2 out of 5 stars 5 Groovy Songs and a lot of half-baked corny '70s nonsense.......2001-08-19

If you're a collector looking for 5 great, long-forgotten and underrated '70s MILD-HARD-ROCK (in the same general loudness boat as Steve Miller or Bloodrock) songs you can't find anywhere else you've come to the right place. The magic 5 that get the 'corn balance' right are "Running Down the Highway," "Gravedigger," "Don't Wait Too Long," "Ride, Ride My Lady," and "Barrel Full of Wine;" everything else either straight out BLOWS or gets the 'corn balance' wrong straight into MEDIOCRITY. The cover of "Whiter Shade of Pale" is a perfect example: who needs a cover of a perfectly done song?

So is it worth buying this CD for those 4 exceptional greasy, Steve-Millerish, rockin' tunes that ... VERY FEW OTHERS ON PLANET EARTH have? ... YES. If only to surprise a few hot-shots it's definitely worth it. Every time I play one of those tunes for some new know-it-all Mr. Rock'n'roll acquaintance of mine (and I get one almost every other week), I get to experience anew the thrill of having them guess wrong as to who they think it is! Well, actually, if more people find out that this was Michael Kamen's old rock band before he became a big-time Hollywood film composer, this record probably won't be so obscure anymore & those 5 hipper-than-thou songs may enjoy a brief revival.

5 out of 5 stars How exciting to find this album!.......2000-10-03

I have an old LP of Roll Over and it has been through the wars. Every time I play it the quality gets worse and worse, which is such a shame, considerring how good the album is. When I saw that the album had been re-released, I was extatic. Freedomburger is also good, but Roll Over is a rock classic that more people should know about. If you like classic rock, buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Long Overdue.......1999-12-23

After years of waiting for a CD re-issue, it is finally here. Roll Over is a perfect album, one that came at a perfect time in rock history. It stood in stark contrast to the bombast of the era (early 70s). It was (and still is) fresh, inventive pop that, to my mind, presaged the New Wave that was to come later in the decade. A true, obscure classic.

4 out of 5 stars Airplane rocks out on this one.......2006-08-25

By the time the SF concert recorded here took place in 1972 Airplane had gone through a lot of problems and personnel changes. The band was on it's last legs and this would be their last show under the Airplane name. But what a show it was! Drummer Spencer Dryden was out and vocalist Marty Balin had left to become a pop crooner. Balin and Dryden were replaced by David Frieberg and John Barbata and the late Papa John Creach had come aboard and added his soaring violin to the mix. All the changes made this the most musically accomplished and confident of all the Airplane and Starship lineups. From the opening of 'Have You Seen the Saucers' there's a thundering wall of sound that this band never had before or afterward. It's not just the musicianship of Barbata and Creach, Jorma Kaukonen was at his peak as a guitarist and songwriter at this moment and his songs like 'Feel So Good' and 'Trial by Fire' absolutely smoke. Since they're doing Kantner\Slick\Kaukonen\Creach material, Marty Balin's absence is actually a blessing. Frieberg does a better job of harmonizing with Paul and Grace and the spot on harmonies complement the wall of sound perfectly. It took the Airplane 5 or 6 years to evolve into a musically tight and powerful unit. It's a shame that when that finally happened Jorma left to continue his evolution in Hot Tuna and Airplane devolved into the generic arena rock of Jefferson Starship. This is how I'd prefer to remember them. If you're a connoisseur of great live rock n' roll you should own this.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta have title for your collection!.......2005-07-24

I actually bought the cassette of this music in spring of 1973 when I was in Air Force basic training. Great music, not a clinker on it. If you love Jefferson Airplane, then you have to get this one. MEXICO is wonderful, I dont know of another source for this tune. Feel so good, classic, many others. BUY THIS ONE! You sure wont be sorry!

whats the record co. waiting for. lets go while we're young!

3 out of 5 stars Fans Only.......2004-09-30

This would not be the place to be introduced to the Jefferson Airplane. Good in places, bad in others this album sounds like the spirit is gone & Jack and Jorma couldn't wait to get back to Hot Tuna. It starts off well with an awsome version of Have You Seen The Saucers that by it's self makes this album worthwhile, but declines rapidly. A really awful version of Crown Of Creation. Milk Train is good but adds nothing to the original. The rest is played by a band of professionals in a workmanlike but uninspired performance. If you like the Airplane don't skip this one, but get Bless It's Pointed Little Head and Live at The Fillmore first & don't listen to Thirty Seconds Over Winterland next to them.

4 out of 5 stars Thirty Seconds Over Today's Music Business.......2003-06-20

Well....being a long-time Airplane/Grace Slick fan (including her better vocal cuts after-the-Airplane, like 'Fast Buck Freddie') I'd have to say that this CD has stood the test of time and gotten better with age. Why? Because, unfortunately, the basic music business of the last 15 or so years has been dominated by essentially awful, vanilla 'clone-vocalists' (female AND male) complete with homogenized unison singing and writhing to a boring R&B beat and instrumentation with virtually no imagination or musical interest (except for perhaps Madonna and earlier Janet Jackson) - unless you are a teeny-bopper in which case it's all for you, kid.

Anyway - I used to listen to this album a lot (like all of my Airplane releases) and at the same time in the early 1970's go see the "Jefferson Starship" (by then) and compare. Hmmm....back then the Starship live concerts sounded better than this CD. And that vintage of live concert Starship (circa 1975-78) did A LOT of Airplane material, which was thrilling. Then, now, as always - Kantner's semi-acoustic stuff with Grace's vocals and harmonies have been the hallmark of the best [later] Airplane/Starship recorded or live music; and Grace's singing in virtually every concert I ever saw (not to mention very carefully recorded albums post 1970) was *stunning.* By then she'd lost a lot of weight, too, and looked very appealing again on stage. Whereas the Starship lived on for years, gradually dying away under the various internal pressures, the Airplane returned in 1989 for a brief but welcome (to the REAL fans, anyway) tour. They were just AWESOME, in 1989, live on stage. Grace, especially.

So it's great to go back in the past and especially revisit the "30 Seconds" CD, as it conjures images of those long-gone, very special, really big and famous bands; those that were seriously musical and fun to follow in the media and on the road.

Which is really saying something.

--L.A. Smith

...from one of my favorite bands of all time.Incredibly played and recorded.A must!
