Album Description

THE GRADUATE have gone from virtual unknowns to gracing the cover of CMJ magazine in a matter of just a few short months. THE GRADUATE are currently gearing up for the release of ANHEDONIA, their debut full-length album. The quintet aims to surpass the success of their previous independently released "The Horror Show" EP which garnered the title of `number one most added in college radio' at the end of 2006. Anhedonia was produced by acclaimed producer Brian McTernan(Circa Survive, Senses Fail, and Thrice). at Salad Days Studios in Baltimore, MD. So far the record has been receiving acclaim from both fans and critic's everywhere. Absolutepunk.net has named the band "Best New Artist of 2007". The band will be busy touring for the rest of the year with upcoming tours with Jacks Mannequin, The Audition, Punchline, All Time Low, and even a spot on the 2007 Vans Warped Tour.

I loved these guys when I only had their demo, so naturally I stalked the sites waiting for "Anhedonia" when I heard about the upcoming release. It was well worth it. Call them Emo, pop punk, whatever you want (they really don't care), just go get this cd and catch a live show. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-05-27

I've known this band since the moment it was formed. The lead singer (Corey Warning) was the lead singer of a band that broke-up right before this band was formed (Best of Winter). He is a really nice guy, so when I found out he was forming a new band I was immediately interested. Their EP (Horror Show) was great, and a couple of the songs were re-made and put onto this album. I love it. It sounds just like their EP but better. They have really improved as musicians, and I can't wait to see them this summer on Warped Tour.

Some of my favorites include (no special order):
-Sit & Sink
-I Survived
-Surround Yourself
-Justified

Great album from beginning to end - very catchy!!

4 out of 5 stars The Graduate - soundtrack.......2006-07-09

A great piece of history wwith music that never gets old. Timless, and wonderfully produced.

5 out of 5 stars A Taste of Two Worlds.......2005-11-20

Before you buy this, listen to the samples first. In an echo of previous reviews, I agree that this is not a comprehensive Simon and Garfunkel album, nor is it meant to be. This is a collection of contrasts, an example of the Generation Gap as represented through the eyes of Benjamin Braddock. In the musical juxstaposition of youth and middle age, modernism and antiquity, we experience the '60's just before the "Age of Aquarius" and psychedelia. This is a wonderfully novel album, good for cocktail parties and conversation; a blast from the past, if you will. If lounge music is your bag, invest in this classic. It is pretty groovy in that makes unhipness hip, in a very retro sort of way. It inspires me to put on my mini skirt and get out the martini shaker. It is great to put in a shuffle mix with some Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and a S&G disc like "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, & Thyme". Talk about a taste of two worlds...Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars '60s SOUNDTRACK.......2005-08-21

Whimsical soundtrack to the 1967 Mike Nichol's film blends the foxtrot generation with the soft-core hippie music of '60s Simon and Garfunkel. Hence, you get the folkish and electric versions of "Sounds of Silence" alongside '40s cocktail lounge big band that sounds like your local TV station holding a telethon, and a hot striptease blues number, (in the film it's when Dustin Hoffman takes Katharine Ross to a strip joint), with blazing sax and rolling drum solo. The centerpiece here is Simon's traditional English folk, "Scarborough Fair", with it's precise musicbox harpsichord sounding impossibly perfect. And, where have you gone, "Mrs. Robinson"? Only the first altered stanza is found here, as it was in the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Grusin breaks the mood.......2004-07-14

The haunting score of "The Graduate" was provided effectively by Simon & Garfunkel. It's the lyrics and eerie acoustics that provide the real backdrop for the film and the soundtrack. I felt kind of disturbed by the Grusin tracks, although appropriate in the film, end up being scanned by on my CD player to hear Simon and Garfunkel in a continuous unfolding of the film. It's beautiful in the car on a crisp autumn day. Scarborough Fair is the true star of this soundtrack and April Come She Will. I wasn't born until 1975, but always held onto the cusp of this age of music because it reflected the real mood of the film, one I didn't appreciate as a kid in the 80s, but understood after I became a college graduate. It's great to have the authenticity of the original score, but if you're buying "The Graduate" solely for Simon & Garfunkel, you may find 90% of the score sitting on your dad's music shelf . . .

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Soundtrack.......2003-12-19

Forget about the boring Dave Grusin songs and just concentrate on the songs by Simon And Garfunkel, providers of the greatest vocal harmonies on the face of the Earth. The most amazing thing about this album is the instrumental version of "Scarborough Fair", which contains the most BEAUTIFUL, HAUNTING notes that ever came from an acoustic guitar. I don't know how Simon does it, but he manages to create an atmosphere of ineffable beauty and enchantment. There's no vocals or bass, just an a capella acoustic guitar reading, so some would call it "boring". But those are the people who don't know the meaning of the word "feeling".

BTW, there are two reasons why I only gave it three stars:
a.) The aforementioned, boring Dave Grusin songs.
b.) Most of the Simon And Garfunkel songs are either truncated or drastically altered.

5 out of 5 stars This man should be a superstar........2007-07-01

Hell, MC Lars should be president. I hate to be the one who breaks this to you, but mainstream hip-hop really sucks. So do mainstream rock, electronica, mainstream films....pretty much everything you see or hear that you don't discover for yourself or through a friend with good taste. No rapper seems to understand this better than MC Lars, who incorporates all of these sounds that suck and twists them until they're relevant again. It turns out that white rappers don't have be laughingstocks after all; just when they try to convince you that they are black. Lars raps about the things he cares about and understands: science fiction, romantic confusion, musical passion, punk and metal, the state of hip-hop music etc. Through clever sampling (remember the old-school "Tetris" theme?), hysterically funny and relevant lyrics with absolute truth behind them, and pure passion MC Lars is taking the music game back for the fans one song at a time. On the opening track, "Download This Song", he lambasts the pigheadedness of the music industry's attitude about file-sharing ("Hey, mister recordman what's wrong with you?/ Running your label like it's 1992") to a shockingly generic techno track. Shocking because I actually enjoyed it.....a lot. It turns out that even the most played-out sound can be made new again with solid song-writing and genuine energy from the artist making the music. I don't entirely know what Lars' secret is, but anyone that has me bobbing my head to a lame synth riff over a dance beat has got my respect as an artist. It's also worth noting that there is no profanity to speak of on this album. That is not to say people won't be offended by the lyrics; just the stupid ones who mimic cultures they don't understand to be cool. Posers, if you like. "Hot Topic is not Punk Rock" pretty much says what there is to say in the song's title to the sounds of real hardcore punk music. Likewise, "Generic Crunk Rap", where Lars whispers apologies to his heroes for the bad music he's imitating ("Chuck D/ I'm sorry but we're killing hip-hop"). Best of all, there is "Signing Emo" where a fictional group, Hearts That Hate, and all the real bands like them are soundly mocked with a chorus so laughably generic you won't believe it's not a real top 40 radio hit. But it's not all about making fun of bad music and record labels. Lars proves his hardcore geek cred by calling out the likes of Boba Fett, Q, and General Zod in his tribute to killer sci-fi, "Space Game". In my favorite moment on the album, Lars implores DJ HAL to "bring that beat back". HAL predictably responds, "I'm sorry, Lars, but I can't do that" and the end result is a sweet guitar solo. "The Dialogue" is another favorite where Lars collaberates with rapper Ill Bill to exchange verses about the music they listend to growing up. It's a song about mutual respect for other cultures and staying true to where you come from; something many other musicians could learn a lot about. The catchiest tune on the album is probably "iGeneration" which anthemically celebrates the state of our lives in the now in the way only a true nerd can while simultaneously referencing The Who. There's plenty more to talk about -high-voiced MC Chris ("Aqua Teen Hunger Force" fans will know him well) appears as Satan on a helium binge in "Roommate From Hell"- but I could be here all day singing the praises of this album. This sort of fresh musical perspective only comes along every so often so if you want to hear clever, intelligent rap music that incorporates rock, electronica, and modern geek culture into one laugh-out-loud funny, ridiculously listenable, and irresistable package then you've already missed out on too much. Buy this album, buy his T-shirts, attend his concerts, and tell your friends; the voice of our people has arrived.

5 out of 5 stars For geeks only.......2007-05-06

MC Lars' "The Graduate" is the perfect CD for geeks of all stripes. His lyrics reference geek topics from The Matrix to 2001 to Tetris to Moby Dick.

Standout tracks include "Downoad This Song", "Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock", "iGeneration", "Internet Relationships (Are Not Real Relationships)", "Space Game" and "The Roommate From Hell".

A CD with its geek heart on its sleeve, MC Lars gives pasty geeks a rap album to be proud of.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly rap.......2007-04-12

Pretty good rapping, and good instrumentals, but it's hard to put a genre on this. His songs range from rap to pop to rock. Interesting mix, not fond of many of the songs, but Roommate From Hell was cool with a cameo from mc chris. Other good songs are Internet Relationships, Ahab, and 21 Concepts.

4 out of 5 stars NICE ONE LARS!.......2006-08-10

Firstly, for all of you people out there who have heard "Download This Song",,,do not go buying this cd because you love that track. I loved that track, downloaded the cd, saw him in concert, and baught the cd!

I normally like underground hip hop, anything from stones throw stuff to def jux stuff , well basically too many other groups to mention, but I would definately advise people to buy this one. Loved the songs Space Game, Rap Girl ,,well pretty much all of the cd. The one thing that is doubtful is whether this could stand loads and loads of plays without getting tired. So far so good but time will tell.

Havent heard all of the laptop EP as yet but the few songs I have heard were better than this cd, especially UK vica versa and Mr Raven. Lars was opening for 2 groups when I caught him live and really should have been the main act, would definately advise to catch a show if you can.

Anyways, alltogether, 8 out of 10, perhaps could have been a little longer and just a tad cheesy,,,,but what the hell, i love it.

5 out of 5 stars Witty and fresh.......2006-07-04

Great CD. All the songs are witty and have something to say. The style of the CD is varied, covering all genres in one way or another. If you're the kind of person who understands sarcasm and is a bit critical of parts of social culture, then this ones for you!

Graduate features Roland Orzabel and Curt Smith in their days prior to attaining international stardom with Tears For Fears. They formed in Bath on the back of the New Wave boom of the late 1970's. After a one-off indie 45, they signed to precision and enjoyed a radio hit with 'Elvis Should Play Ska' (referring to Elvis Costello's critical remarks about the 2-Tone scene), which proved popular across Europe. 19 tracks in all including the 9 bonus tracks 'Ambition', 'I See Through You', 'Premature Baby', Christ Look Upon Us', 'Oh U Boys', 'Only The Best', 'Think Of Me', 'Happens So Fast' & 'No Second Troy'.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It's Pre Tears For Fears - and very different.......2004-11-06

If you are a major Tears For Fears fan, the band Graduate has much meaning. This is the band that Tears For Fears fans term Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith's "Pre Tears For Fears" days. This is a very accurate statement. For many years much of the work of Graduate was not widely available. In 2002, Sanctuary Graduate's only album "Acting My Age" was re-released. Included with this album are songs that Graduate was to include on a second album. Two of these songs were actually released while 7 additional songs that never were released are included. The term "Pre Tears For Fears" is very accurate - this is a very different sound than anything you would hear with Tears For Fears. Despite being a different sound, this is one terrific album - another gem involving Curt and Roland.

Curt and Roland would leave Graduate in 1981. Much of the reason why they left Graduate was that they didn't want to be confined to a band. Graduate was a 5 piece band consisting of Curt, Roland, Andy Marsden, John Baker, and Steve Buck. When they would form Tears For Fears - they would operate in a "project" mode. This would mean that Curt and Roland would form the nucleus and bring in surrounding musicians to help them complete the picture. Graduate was a full group - and the quintet was the base for the group. When Tears For Fears was formed, they would start out as a Synth-Pop band and eventually would transform themselves into a more natural sound that many would term "Beatle-esque". The first album that Tears For Fears would do would be an album called "The Hurting". As the title suggests, this was an album that dealt with the emotions surrounding pain. Later, When Tears For Fears would make "The Hurting", they almost seemed to put a more dark and haunting spin on New Wave. This was an album that really had a heavy Synth-Pop sound - and was an excellent debut album. This is a very different sound than Graduate.

The sound of Graduate was capturing on a music style known as the Mod Revival. Graduate's sound also had New Wave influences (some might even argue that Mod Revival was really an off-shoot of New Wave). In late 1979, the Mod Revival had begun to take full stream. Graduate's sound emulated a very close match to bands such as The Jam and early Elvis Costello. Mod Revival is often denoted by a Red, White, and Blue Target. The "Acting My Age" album cover seems to have visual references to this target. The Drums have the colors of the target and the "Age" is put in a target icon that reminds you of the Mod Revival target. As much as Tears For Fears became Beatle-esque in their music and appearance with their later music, the pictures of Curt and Roland with the Graduate band members in suits and ties conjures up memories of the suit and tie days of the Beatles in their early days (The suits and ties also remind me of a more modern group - The Hives). You won't hear too much of Curt in the vocals department - on Graduate, it's clear that Roland is the lead vocalist.

As mentioned the music does not sound like the direction that Tears For Fears would take on "The Hurting". In most cases, the music is much more campy. I mentioned Elvis Costello above. With Graduate it isn't hard to draw parallels in the styles between Graduate and Costello - it's easy to see the Costello influence. One of Graduate's more popular songs "Elvis Should Play Ska" was actually a song directed at Elvis Costello. It was around this time that there was also a revival in Ska Music. Costello had made a comment about Ska artists being one-hit wonders. Roland felt Costello had sour grapes and thus wrote the song.

There are many other good tracks on this album. In fact, all of the tracks are terrific. The first four songs are outstanding - "Acting My Age", "Sick and Tired", "Ever Met a Day", and "Dancing Nights" are all very catchy songs and immediately establish the talent and potential of Graduate. If you listen to the chords and melodies of "Ever Met a Day", you may actually hear a bit of a Disco influence (despite the fact that nobody admitted it in their music, there was an influence in many songs). The best song is a very unique song that is included is "I See Through You". This was a song that was released, but not on the original "Acting My Age" album. The song starts out with an R&B groove. The best thing is how the song "pauses" in several spots - makes a great effect. It also segues into a more acoustic toward the end. In the unreleased track "Christ Look Upon Us", there isn't much of a New Wave or Mod influence (the later, unreleased tracks seem to move away from the Mod sound). Roland had always been fascinated with exploring religious themes and this song is no exception. All of the unreleased tracks are excellent.

As for the liner notes, there are no lyrics that are included. This is a bit disappointing considering these songs are not widely circulated. There isn't a lot in production and band credits either. The booklet with the liner notes opens up in panel format. There is a terrific write-up by Christopher MacAdams (who is widely respected as an authority on Graduate). This write-up is almost worth the price of the CD. Also included is a Singles and Albums Discography of Graduate. If you are a deep Tears For Fears fan, you will soon get hooked on this album. It does sound very different than anything you are used to with Tears For Fears. A new fan looking for some outstanding Mod Revival music should also be satsified. This comes highly recommended.
