Wonderful sweet CD.......2007-01-15

This is one of Dan F's very best CD's. I had the album years ago and recently replaced it as a CD. It brought back a flood of memories! Very sweet tunes and haunting words! Great CD!

Whatever happened to this guy?.......2007-01-06

I loved early Fogelberg. Yeah, he could be a little syrupy at times, but there were so many strong, compelling songs. Then around the time of Innocent Age, he went over the top. He became that guy his critics had often claimed, at least to my ear. I couldn't listen to him anymore.

BUT, before that happened -- so much good music, and the best of all on Captured Angel. I would recommend this to anyone. Even if you think you can't stand the guy.

Check out Souvenirs, too. And most of Nether Lands. If you've never heard "Give me some time"...that song was so good it prompted an entire followup album.

The Only Thing Wrong With This CD Is That It Is Too Short!.......2006-01-30

This is yet another CD that I previously owned on vinyl when it first came out. This is one of my favorites from him. This is long before he had achieved national recognition. Don't expect a set of country, or just love songs, or ballads. Perhaps, this CD shows off the versatility of Dan. The disk opens with Aspen/These Days. He uses strings on this song and it has a classical/rock feel to it. Comes and Goes is a wonderful, relaxing song and is one of my all-time favorite songs from him. The title track and Crow are okay songs. Next Time and Man In The Mirror/ Below The Surface are better. But, The Last Nail and Old Tennessee are superior. Perhaps, it's because my young, wife hails from TN and these songs both make me think of her everytime I listen to them. The only thing wrong with this CD is that it is too short!!! This is one of Dan's best!!!

One of his best.........2005-07-29

Captured Angel is one of Dan Fogelberg's best albums. I have been a fan of his fromt he beginning and like fine wine, he has improved with age. I recommend this album highly, it is my 3rd favorite behind "The Innocent Age" and "Full Circle"

A Wonderful Surprise.......2005-05-09

Prior to buying this album, I owned PHOENIX, INNOCENT AGE and GREATEST HITS. I was more familiar with Dan's later work and, gazing at the back of this CD, I didn't know any of these songs.

What a pleasant surprise to discover that these songs are not only as good as Dan's later and more famous material, they might even be better. I wasn't sure if Dan would really sound "young," probably because of his tendency to overproduce arrangements. But he truly does here...and this is amplified by the wonderful accentuation of country elements on this record.

Tremendous guitar playing, soulful vocals, lyrics that actually have something to say...this is the sound of an artist truly coming into his own. And the songs are absolutely wonderful - a great mix of ballads and rockers, often within the same track!

If you like Dan at all, make sure to get this one. You will not regret it, period.

This Three Dog Night album is interesting for a couple reasons. One, it shows the world that the band was more than just a vocal harmony band, and two, only one song featured here is played on the radio anymore ("One").

If you grew up listening to this band and expect to hear unique vocal harmonies, think again. While the vocals here are definitely good, it seems to me Three Dog Night wanted to prove that they could also stand tall with all the hard rock bands around at the time. "Nobody" and "Chest Fever" proves this for example. Songs that can rock convincingly.

"Heaven Is In Your Mind" is another great song, and a fantastic way to open this set. I don't know if I'd prefer this version over Traffic's, but you know, the Traffic version sounds pretty old, while the boys in Three Dog Night give the song an updated sound with plenty of energy. Check out that guitar solo in the middle. In fact, check out the guitar work throughout the entire album. Yes that's right- there's PLENTY of guitar on this album (for all you people out there who might think the band was too weak to hang with the big boys, like Zeppelin and Sabbath- think again!)

This version of "Feeling Alright" is quite good too. Again, it's about rocking out with some funk thrown in for good measure. This version is probably just as good as Grand Funk's. Joe Cocker's version can go... in the back of the closet.

For those missing some of Three Dog Night's softer and prettier numbers, "Easy to be Hard" might fit the bill. It's a shame most people will probably write off Three Dog Night without giving some of their albums a chance. That is, most people who grow up today, under the assumption that Three Dog Night was all about old and dated vocal harmonies. Wrong! Pick this album up for proof of that.

Wish I'd Been There!.......2006-07-03

This is my favorite live album of all time; bought it in early 1970, shortly after it came out. I'm so glad the CD version is available now, because I've absolutely worn the vinyl out! As someone else mentioned, it is a little short, but the energy is fabulous. The versions of It's For You, Nobody, One, "Eli's-a-Comin" , and Try a Little Tenderness are, IMO, much, much better than the studio cuts. Both vocals and instrumentals seem to be a lot more together in this live album. Unbelievable that it was done in '69, seems like only yesterday!

In the true spirit of 'retro'.......2005-10-13

I remember when this album (not CD) was popular. This was always close to the top of our play list. For nostalgia, I recently purchased this CD... and at first I couldn't remember why we liked it so much. But after a couple of spins through the CD player, I realized that this is an excellent capture of the Three Dog Night sound. Well mixed, excellent musicians, and a great selection of music. It would have been really nice if they could have included some bonus tracks on the CD not originally on the album. This one really 'Socks it to it'!

Easily one of the best live performances ever captured on record, tape or CD! This is a great album! The music and the vocals are tremendous. The energy and feel comes through and you can tell the band and the audience are having a great time. The only knock for me is that it's to short. I wish these guys would dig out the rest of the tapes, re-master the tunes and add extra songs. There has to be more to this show somewhere. When you hear it I think you will feel the same way. There are so many reissue and re-mastered CDs with extra songs these days that could have been left alone. This is one that should be enhanced. It truly deserves it.

One of the most celebrated live performances ever!.......2005-08-21

18.000 souls had the chance to presence this amazing spectacle in Los Angeles Forum on 18 September 1969 one of the most reminded musical happenings ever made.
The impressive strength vocal and incredible moods of this fabulous band in the late sixties allowed them articulate lyrics ballads, easy going themes and furious rapture.
They had a very original style but the perfect vocal coupling in white rock bands. How can you forget his furious Eli's coming, or his super known One or the sweet ballad Easy to be hard?
Go for this historical document and no matter if you didn't live the Rock Golden Ages!

Wow, a great CD all around........2007-07-17

All I can say is that I wish I had been able to see Journey perform live. What a band! They sound wonderful and for the people like me, it's a taste of what it must have been like to be in a Journey concert back in the early 80's. The songs, the music, and THE VOICE...STEVE PERRY. It's just great live music. I thoroughly recommend it.

I think the 3-4 albums that Journey came out with in this time frame were all very good. If you're a big fan, get them all.

bought this album for the packaging. all the 2006 reissues are in a cardboard digipak case rather than a hard plastic jewel case. includes a booklet with pictures and lists tour dates. great for a collector.

Essential for any Journey fan.......2007-04-20

Don't listen to the guy who said this is not an essential album. That is simply not true. This is a great live album--the last with the great Greg Rolie in the lineup. If you want to talk about nonessential Journey albums they basically start after this one. Downhill from there.

Great Live Journey CD.......2006-11-19

CAPTURED is a great live CD by Journey, proving that Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie were a great vocal team, and making clear what was lost for all that was gained when Jonathan Cain replaced Rolie. This set contains great songs from the first three Perry-era Journey albums (INFINITY, EVOLUTION, DEPARTURE), which more than make up for the inconsequential album-closing studio track "The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)." The fact that past and present Journey members currently advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as increased funding for law enforcement, makes CAPTURED an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

Wonderful remix of classic Peter Tosh.......2007-06-14

I had lost touch with the many of my old favorite Peter Tosh recordings during the world's transition from vinyl to digital devices. I have been slowly rebuilding my library. So, I have owned this album on vinyl for 20 some years, I was blown away by the new version. More political commentary by Peter than I remember and outstanding renditions of all of the songs.

I highly recommend this album.

'Rastafari Is'.......2006-07-26

I realized I haven't written any reviews for music and this is an artist I've been listening to from my earliest beginnings. I don't know who the best musician is, the choice is subjective. But Peter Tosh to me is the greatest ever. 'Rastafari Is' (the live version) and 'Not Gonna Give It Up' off the 'Mama Africa' album are the two greatest songs ever made. Music like any other medium is directive. The Orisha Tosh directs us to righteousness, intelligence and upfullness. Buy the cd and the concomitant dvd.

Hands Down the Best Live Album of All Time.......2006-06-06

Once Again, a broad claim. But, this truly is the best. Before My personal Favorite was "It's Alive" by The Ramones (With "Where's the 10 1/2" by Black Flag coming in a close second) but this album blows both of those away. I personally always preferred to Peter Tosh to Marley after the Wailers, and this is one of the reasons why. The actual sound is incredibly crisp, clean, and sounds better than in the studio. Now most of the time, I don't believe in live albums being superior in any way to recordings- there very rarely is any extra energy in live recordings. This is one of the exceptions. You can almost cry when you ear the beautiful, passionate energy coming out of his speakers. An essential to any Roots Reggae compilation.

Complete Captured Live "AWESOME".......2005-09-06

This DVD is awesome! Tosh is the at his best live! His voice is like no other. Tosh was ahead of his time. I thought it was awesome that he spoke his mind. It was such a loss to the world when this guy was killed.

It Doesn't Get Better.......2005-08-05

First, "Complete Captured Live" has perhaps the best sound and production of any live concert recording I have ever heard. It actually SOUNDS better than most studio recordings. The drums are clean, crisp and in your face; the bass is perfectly placed and full; and the entire mix is well balanced and pristine.

Second, the song selection is excellent, focussing mostly on songs from Mama Africa, probly Peter Tosh's most artistically realized group of songs.

Third, Peter Tosh's vocal performances are astounding. His voice is in fine condition, his phrasing is spot-on, and his delivery is remarkably confident, assured and strong. Peter Tosh was a big man (6' 3") and he possessed a husky and very masculine voice that emanated deep from within his chest. In these songs, he sounds like a giant who could bend a microphone stand into a pretzel with one hand.

This CD has really made me re-analyze Tosh's work and place in all music, not just reggae. By the time this 1983 concert took place, Peter Tosh had been writing songs, singing and performing for nearly 20 years and it is obvious that by 1983 he had honed his art to a razor's edge. Remember that most American and English rock musicians of Tosh's age (Tosh started writing and recording around 1964) were already burned out, dead, or drugged out by age 38, milking their "greatest hits" of years past or making crappy, forgettable new music their fans did not want to hear. But here, in August 1983, Peter Tosh delivers a concert dominated by freshly written material that is among his best and delivers a live performance that is probably his personal best, one of the best ever in reggae music, and one of the best recorded live concerts in any genre. Even his one chestnut ("Get Up Stand Up") is recast in a crushing version that is miles from "sunny reggae style" and owes more to heavy metal and punk in its arrangement and ferocity. The Jamaican "rude boy" was the original punk of music (see The Clash). Tosh was a rude boy but he was disarmingly smart and a dedicated craftsman of his art. And although he smoked more weed than many small European countries the stuff seemed to make his art stronger and sharper rather than weaker. Go figure.

Peter Tosh's art was as a writer and singer of politically charged songs that still worked as singable songs with effective and catchy melodic hooks. In this arena, he has almost no peers. While Bob Marley shares the prize with Marvin Gaye for some of the best sensual songs (an arena Tosh rarely touched), Peter Tosh practically owns the political song and could be said to have invented the genre and taken it its highest level of development. His review of his early work on the 1976 album "Live & Dangerous Boston 1976" shows how in his late teens and early 20s Tosh had already mastered the craft of marrying the political with the singable and danceable. As anyone knows who has tried to write songs with a political tint, it is very rocky terrain and fraught with artistic pitfalls (just ask Bruce Springsteen). It is a genre of songwriting that is horrendously difficult to do well without sounding preachy, dogmatic, cliched or annoyingly self-righteous. Peter Tosh succeeds repeatedly by using simple, singable language:

"Africa is the richest place
But it has the poorest race
And to me it's just a disgrace
Just a disgrace.
That's why I'm not gonna give it up.
I will be fighting.
I've got to be fighting
I'm always fighting
Until Africa and Africans are free."

The above, from "Not Gonna Give It Up" works so well because in this concert Peter Tosh sings the words with amazing force, strength and honesty with a twinge of tenderness and sadness underneath. In this song, and others ("Mama Africa", "African" and "Pick Myself Up") Peter Tosh melds the folk, soul, blues, gospel and reggae vocal stylings into an amazingly effective whole.

Having not listened to much reggae -- or Peter Tosh -- for 15 years I was able to hear this CD with very fresh and open ears. It totally blew me away.

Tosh's speech (about 3 minutes) called "Peter's Rap" is a hidden gem of force, bluntness, braggadoccio and humbleness. What starts as a rant about record companies (ala Tinsel Town Rebellion by Frank Zappa) quickly unfolds to a much wider and deeper palette until he finishes with the statement (to folks in Los Angeles) to prepare for World War III. The crowd clearly does not know whether to cheer or what to do. And he says "it will not happen to me, it will happen to you because Rastafari have already fought the first, second and third world wars." It is obvious here where Jamaican political dub poet Mutabaruku turned to develop his own craft. Check him out too.

While it first sounds self-serving and self-pitying, Tosh's rant about record companies disrespecting reggae music and Jamaican singers and songwriters -- and Tosh himself -- is true. The music has always (and still) has been treated by record companies as novelty music, exotica, silly songs that are dancy and Bob Marley. Tosh wanted his music, his country's music and his own songs to be taken seriously and treated with the deference they deserve. Tosh's best songs and lyrics achieve a level of art that fully merits the treatment he felt they earned.

The closing and encore song ("Mama Africa") is a stroke of genius. Most artists save their final song in a concert for their "big hit" that everyone knows, is waiting for and came to the concert to hear. Peter gives the final song slot to a brand new song, 9 minutes long, that many in the audience had not yet heard. And he tears the house down with it. Using a very light and "old fashioned" rock-steady beat, "Mama Africa" could perhaps be Tosh's best song. It is tough, tender, heartfelt and his singing contains a plaintive vulnerability he rarely let out. For a man whose parents abandoned him as an infant -- as a boy growing up with no mother or father -- the words he sings here as a grown man are amazing:

"I've been waiting, yearning, looking
Searching to find you.
I've been crying, praying hoping
That I may find you Mama.

You're my mother Africa
You're my father Africa.

I'm proud of you Mama
I love you Mama
I'm proud of you Mama
I love you heavenly."

Rarely in any music has the personal and political been fused so tightly, perfectly and heartfully as in this song. Walt Whitman declared "I contain multitudes" -- Peter Tosh did too.

This CD gives a picture of Peter Tosh at the very height of his power and it is awesome to behold.

The only thing wrong with the CD package is that it stupidly and inexplicably does not list the names of ANY of the musicians performing with Peter Tosh. What elaborate double CD package of an historic, live concert does not even MENTION the names of the players (even in tiny type)? Interestly, the name of the producer is VERY prominently placed all over the package. Go figure.

Peter Tosh was a fierce and gentle giant. He is very much missed in the world he was taken from by a hail of bullets in 1987.

The best of the 1970's.......2007-05-01

I'll keep it brief. The 1970's had a lot of great live albums. This was probably the best one of them all. It's timeless. Down and dirty blues rocking with guitar work that you will have to hear to believe.

"CAPTURED" is the word here.......2007-04-30

When Johnny Winter used to play rock roll, he really knew how to do it right. There is some blistering guitar work here, as well as some of the meanest slide guitar this side of Elmore James. A nice combination of rock and blues, the more you listen to this album, the more you will come to appreciate how great it really is. They just don't make records like this anymore. ALL Of these latter day rock bands could learn a thing or two from Sweet Papa John.

This is a seriously "SMOKING" album!.......2006-09-04

I am not a big Johnny Winter fan but this a killer live album. For guitar fans, tone freaks, blues hounds and rock and roll animals, this is the real deal!

The best song is the kick off song "Bony Moronie". Wow, does this album get off to a rousing start!

One of my favorite Johnny Winter albums of all time. This is one intense rock/blues CD. Man can these guys play. And Floyd Radford- he compliments Johnny nicely and plays some nice rhythm AND lead guitar. Johnny at his all time best...

Jaw-dropping.......2005-04-14

Johnny Winter is one of the most unknown of the late 1960's/1970's guitar heroes. He also happens to be one of the best, right up there with Cream-era Clapton, Hendrix, and Jimmy Page. This is a live album from 1976 and usually can be found for a pittance. I remember listening to my dad's copy on vinyl before he got the CD when I was a kid in the late 1980's and being amazed. EVERY ONE of these songs has some unreal guitar work from Johnny, and the tone he gets on his guitar is Hendrix taken to the extreme, in some cases. His bandmates are fantastic, as well. I can't recommend only one track or a couple on here...THEY ALL ROCK and they're all amazing. GET THIS ALBUM NOW!

Enough with the missing banter complaints !.......2006-05-15

Sometimes consumers get exactly what they deserve. The big record companies are greedy individuals who would love nothing more than to charge all you Peter Allen fans $21.98 for ALL 82+ minutes of this two LP set. So a record company compromises the best way they can to give you ALL the music and SOME of the banter between songs and you all still complain.

The BIG labels did not even want to deal with this release so give Buddha credit and thanks for releasing it in the first place. Next, who in the world told you all to get rid of every LP or cassette that you owned. If you dumped all of them you quite likely got rid of some music that will never come out on CD. Listen to those if you want the entire thing.

The banter was excised so that YOU, the consumers, could get this worthy performance and ALL the original MUSIC at a fair price, like Amazon's 10.98. Despite the fact that Peter Allen is one of the few performers whose banter even mattered you have the essence of the performance. So enough with what is not there. Be thankful for what is there and buy it now before it disapperas forever.

Captures Allen at his best!.......2003-05-23

A great album from an underappreciated singer-songwriter who unfortunately is still more well-known for being Liza Minnelli's first husband. Allen was the consummate showman and a superb songwriter. Hearing him live is hearing him at his very best. He was one of those performers who thrived before a live audience and reveal so much more of themselves than on a recording. All of his best songs are here, including the sublime "Harbour". What a talent!

I had this cassette, but lost it and have been looking everywhere for a replacement. I ordered the CD and, although I agree with a previous reviewer that too much banter with the audience had been cut, the music is still so wonderful. It's hard to believe that he's gone. What an entertainer. His ballads are his specialty. I am so happy to once again have this in my collection.

I have mixed feelings about this re-release.......2000-03-28

When this recording was first released in the 1980s, it was a stupendous example of Peter Allen's skills as a songwriter and a performer. Unfortunately, this re-release is something of a hatchet job. Several sections of Peter Allen talking to the audience, explaining songs or just demonstrating his charming personality, have been mysteriously deleted. The songs are brilliant and deserve a good listen, because Peter Allen remains a sorely underrated musician. But the omission of Peter's interplay with the audience is a real disservice both to Peter Allen and his fans.

Peter Allen - Live at Carnagie Hall catches the excitement!.......1999-12-27

I first met Peter at the Colonial Tavern in Toronto on my 18th birthday ( I was legal in Ontario .) I'd first heard him on Riener Swartz's TVO show in March of 1975 and was very impressed at the jazzy/ broadway/ camp quality of his work soooo, I ventured down with a buddy of mine for a few drinks and some tunes. Paul Drake, the pianoman at the hotel Peter was staying & a long time, well respected jazzman was there and INSISTED on singing along. I insisted that he be quiet as I could hear him ANY time and Peter was only here for the week. I met Peter that night - we had a few jars, he sang 'Happy Birthday ' to me and we became friends - something you can't have enough of in this life! It was Wonderful! Peter was and is something that MUST be experienced live! He was new, fresh and exciting! His show, his presentation and his tunes were " new, deft little tunes that are both interesting and happy." Live at Carnagie Hall delivers some of what you would have seen. A performer at his best - live, up close and personal.To anyone that might consider purchasing this album - I strongly suggest that you do! Sadly, the Colonial is gone and so is Peter but they will both be remembered by those of us who had the pleasure of seeing him and knowing him.

I Remember.........2006-12-30

sayIng some Anti things at a Petra concert. The singer didn't want to meet me. He managed to ask me if I was going through chemo and said later Babes, though he wouldn't sign an autograph. I think I sat too near for him not to know I said anti things about the sincerity of Petra. well a signing off and a hey Babes is worth something,as is concern. So.. I guess I'll review the album in the context of a kind nostalgia. I used to love the song "Adonai" "Voice in the Wind" off Beat the System. I here love God Gave Rock N Roll to you which is live incredible and not so bad on the original album. John Lawry is an abandoned orphan. He was adopted by the World Mission for children and talks about it on this album. He's Petra's Keyboard player here. He talks about this in "Hollow Eyes" a lovely song off Beat the System" of which this album is a live performance of, as well as killer medleys of harder songs such as "Judas Kiss" and the Keyboard mastery of Handel's Messiah, and other Lawry masterpieces makes any Poo-Pooing of their religious beliefs a non-happening. The Ballad medley is a sing along that does not go away with more enlightened or socially free religious beliefs. I love Petra. Musicianship, John's story, and my meeting with the singer are things which cannot be cast aside for anything in this world. Beat the System and this album are must haves for the Jews, for the rockers. as "Adonai" is a Jewish thing. Thanks. And thank you..

The End Of An Era and The Beginning of A New One for Petra........2006-07-14

"Captured In Time and Space" is Petra's first live album and up until the release of their "Farewell" CD, it had been their only live album. It also marked the end of an era for the band as it would be the final album with lead singer Greg X. Volz. Shortly afterwards, he would be replaced by former Head East singer John Schlitt who would remain with Petra until the end.
"Captured In Time and Space" was recorded during Petra's monumental "Beat The System" tour and presents the band at one of the peak times in their career. Tracks such as "Beat The System", "Speak To The Sky", "God Pleaser" and the three medleys of "Rock", "acoustic" and "Praise" songs show the band at their most energized. The spoken introductions as well as Volz's altar call towards the end of the album definitely prove that Petra wasn't just out to entertain - they were out to spread Truth and Truth in all its Glory.
While this CD is at a generous length of 73-minutes, it should be noted that what is heard on the CD is in fact an edited version of the original LP. Many of the between-song dialogues were shortened and the improvisational piece "the Great I Am" (which was originally between the altar call and the closing piece "It Is Finished") was edited out altogether.
Despite this, "Captured In Time and Space" is still an all-time classic and one of the finest albums from the Volz-era Petra. For those who were around when it first happened, pop this CD in and enjoy a great trip down memory lane. For those who weren't, you're in for something special.

Amazing Music with a Great Message.......2003-08-07

The LIVE Petra album "Captured in Space and Time" is a compilation of some of their best live concerts from 1989. The music is amazingly energetic, uplifting and entertaining. They also share a message of hope and encouragement that was very helpful to me at a tremendously difficult time in my life. I was going through a very rough time, and I would listen to this album and it would lift my spirit and renew my hope. Thank you Petra, for sharing your music and message of faith with us!

Glad to have found this CD re-issue.......2005-11-30

Although, I like quite a bit of Glad's later material and their vocal skills have never diminished, it was earlier Glad that made an impact on me. Captured in Time represents their best effort in my opinion. Everything worked. The musicianship was first rate, the production very professional, the writing was powerful and every song is saturated with scripture. At first listen, this music is enjoyable just for the music's sake; however, repeated listens and attention to the lyrics will reveal substance beyond the aural.

I highly recommend this CD while it is still in stock and available. I went many years listening to a worn out cassette but this digital version is so much better.

I would also recommend Beyond a Star but it is almost impossible to find as I think it never made it to CD (if anyone knows otherwise PLEASE let me know). Romans is another title that ministers but again, extremely hard to find.

Timeless!.......2003-06-14

I was surprised to learn that this CD was first recorded by Glad in 1982. The vocal skills of this group have wide appeal because of their timeless musicianship and the message they are conveying. Their style features impeccable harmony and pleasing arrangements which show their love of the Lord in a wonderful way. The mood of the music is upbeat and uplifting and has a message for Christians in any stage of their walk. The songs on the album are not widely known, so they have a fresh appeal and each one is a delightful surprise. This is the first Glad CD I have bought, but it won't be the last!

This is what I consider to be one of GLAD's best band albums. Not only in musicianship but lyrically as well. This album may have been released in 1982, but the songs are still relevant today. And their listening styles are easy as ever, with light jazz to a 80's pop feel, they have it all. I have loved listening to this album for so many years, it's been such a blessing to me. And just to let you know...if I was stuck on an island with only one GLAD band album to choose, this would be one of my top picks!!!

Incredible Vintage Glad.......2000-07-14

This is one of my favorite Glad albums. Not only is it a great evangelism to non-believers, but it brings a needed reminder to Christians that God is always there for us, even when we have "Questions", or want to "Hide Myself in You". This album also contains Glad's "signature" song, "Be Ye Glad", by Michael Kelly Blanchard, one of my favorites. Musically, the entire album is a masterwork of tight harmony, clean, clear vocals, and wonderful arrangements. Not only do these guys carry a powerful message, but they present it with amazing talent.

Incredible Power and Energy.......2007-03-12

Journey's first live album in 1981 just before multi-million seller ESCAPE is what live album should be. Particularly Steve Perry's voice is outstanding. He rarely drop notes even at high-notes and in some places better than studio version. There's no OPEN ARMS, SEPERATE WAYS, DON'T STOP BELIEVING today's Journey fans take it for granted in live. Yet this prowess of band is super and unrivalled. Except for some parts where LIGHTS AND STAY AWHILE mixes incoherently performance is perfect.

Verdict: Best live album I have ever encountered.
Rating: 96 out of 100
Recommeded for: Every Journay fan, 80s rock and pop fans.

"You See This Microphone Over Here............2006-08-07

.....You see this one right over here?....Do you know what that means?" Yes, I would guess that anybody at that particular show who didn't know what that meant, quickly found out that they were involved in something special---- One of the most inspired, beloved live albums to date! And although this album was recorded over the span of many months on their world tour, one could easily be "fooled" into thinking this was taken from a single show. This live release simply has an exceptional flow to the varied material heard here....almost as if the people who edited this together, were aiming for that effect. The band must have been in great 'form' for the entire Tour....great musicianship, great crowd interaction, and one heck of a great setlist. I don't know of many other groups besides Journey that can alternate between straight-on 'rockers' and heart-wrenching 'ballads', and keep an audience enthralled for the entire show. And the Solos on this album are absolutely 'Killer'... Mr. Schon certainly gets his fair share of the audiences' attention....even the "not too common" bass solo/spanking in "La Do Da" brings Mr. Valory kudos from the crowd. But for me, being a drummer, its Mr. Smith that caught my attention in a BIG way with his wonderfully constructed drum solo. Steve Smith has become my single favorite drummer over the years and I literally NEVER tire of hearing his facility and mastery on the drumkit( if you've only heard Steve with Journey, you MUST do yourself a favor and explore some of his "other-worldly" work with Jean-Luc Ponty, Vital Information , and Vital Tech Tones....absolutely amazing playing by all involved!). But I would venture to say that Mr. Perry played the biggest role in keeping these audiences "on their toes" during the recording sessions for "Captured"---- Steve Perry is truly one of the great vocalist of Pop-Rock music and should certainly go down in music's history as so.

As for the individual songs here on "Captured", there is a nice mix from the bands past releases...though you won't hear anything from the bands "progressive" years here. I like nearly everything Journey has put out, but, through no fault of the band, I have been 'over-exposed' to some of the songs here...thanks to our local "small-Town" AOR radio station. So with that said, I do find myself skipping through a handfull of tunes...most notably: "Lights", "AnyWay You Want It", "Wheel in the Sky", and "Lovin',Touchin',Squeezin'". Don't get me wrong, I love those songs, but its the songs I hadn't been exposed to that keeps me coming back to this album---- "Dixie Highway", "Walks Like a Lady", "Line of Fire", "Too Late", "La Do Da" and, possibly my favorite (slow) Journey tune, "Stay Awhile". By far, this is my preferred version of this great band----shortly after this recording Greg Rollie would move on, and Journey would hit 'SuperStar' status with their next album ("Escape")...not to be 'De-throned' till many years later. This album is truly one of the most exciting live albums ever recorded...and Journey is truly one of the best, universally liked bands in the history of R-n-R---- #3 of my all-time favorite live albums....See Why For Yourself!

Captured is a superb live album from one of my favourite rock bands which brought out hits like faithfully and open arms.This great album features hits like Wheel in the sky,lovin touchin squeezin.Very highly recommended.A must have.Please get this classic but avoid the latest album from Madonna which is really awful.

Journey's first live album still great 25 years on.......2005-12-13

Journey's seventh US release and first and only double live album Captured was released in February of 1981.
Captured was recorded on Journey's 1980 tour in support of the album Departure. This album marked the last appearance of founding member keyboardist and vocalist Gregg Rolie whom would retire from the band during the mixing of this album.
Rolie, along with lead singer Steve Perry, guitarist Neal Schon, bass player Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith rock out on this album and until the release of Live in Houston 1981 this was as close as you got to a Journey concert on album.
We begin with the taped recording of the Evolution track Majestic which then segues into the killer Where Were You and is a superb version. Next is Just The Same Way which is one of my favorites, Schon's soloing here rocks. We then segue into Line of Fire which is a great rocking shuffle. Next is the medley of Lights/Stay Awhile which is superb. Too Late is next and rivals the studio version. The exclusive track Dixie Highway is next and a studio version of this track was not ever recorded. Then the first half(first vinyl disc) ended with the medley of Feeling That Way/Anytime which features stellar harmonies once again with Rolie and Perry do a nice job trading off vocals.
The original album's second disc starts with the rocker Do You Recall which is a great version of the Evolution track. Next is Walks Like A Lady which includes some bluesy work from Schon and Rolie before ending with a wll of feedback from Schon's guitar which would segue into a killer La Do Da which is better than its studio counterpart and has a bass and drums improv from Valory and Smith before going into a killer drum solo from Steve "the Machine Gun" Smith. Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' follows and is another highlight with stellar harmonies and excellent guitar work from Schon who plays some nasty slide here. Next is Wheel In The Sky which is a killer version and is rivaled only with the Live in Houston 1981 version and this one segues into the set closing Any Way You Want It in stellar fashion. The closing studio track The Pary's Over(Hopelessly in Love) is a great song and featured Steve Roseman on keyboards as Gregg Rolie was gone from the band by then but is a great song.
Captured remains a classic and was a successful live album peaking at #9 upon release and gave Journey its fourth Platinum album in a row. Journey proved with Captured that they could rock live and were great live!
