If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks.It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. I love this CD. It's very well-done, and the approach is different than most children's CDs - very refined, yet soothing. I don't get tired of listening to it the way I do others -- which is important when trying to get a little one to sleep! I highly recommend it and the companion book.

Simple and sweet songs.......2006-04-02

With just piano, violin and vocals, this is a simple and heartfelt album. Ms. Baird's voice conveys the full emotions that a mother feels for her new baby with clean and open singing. The first track in particular, "All Through The Night," still makes me teary. I played this in the hospital when my son was born, and we use it as part of our wind-down ritual. I do agree that some of the songs are a little upbeat for bedtime. We just skip those in the evening (using iTunes).

Marvellous cd, enchanting music.......2005-10-18

Our whole family loves this cd. I am continually charmed and refreshed by the subtlety, taste and musicianship that has gone into these arrangements of well- and lesser-known gems. Apart from the joy of the simple yet perfect chordal progressions, listen to the warm, caressing tone imparted by the low bass notes in the piano in many of the tracks. The pace is so wonderfully leisurely, there is time to savour each song or piece, and yet each lasts only two or three minutes. The three diverse yet complementary singers, each with a tender and gentle presence suiting the subject matter, give a sense of a 19th century family musical evening. Magical.

Good if you want to sing from the book but can't read music.......2004-02-10

I bought this solely because I have the book and wanted to sing the lullabies to my kids, but I can't read music. For this purpose it is fine. The songs are not in the same order as in the book but I can deal. As a stand-alone lullaby CD I wouldn't really recommend it--the songs are not sung in a soothing manner, there's lots of variety in tempo and volume, some are even sung up-beat. The voices are not pitched high enough for babies either. That being said, I am back on Amazon today to buy it for my sister who is due any day now with her 3rd kid--we both like to sing and have the book, and songs (in book or music form) are a great present that the baby won't grow out of for a long time, and helps you bond with your little one too.

Didn't like the voice........2002-12-11

I bought this cd to go with the book and it is very frustrating because the songs on this cd are not even in the same order as the book. The singing voice fluctuates too much, it will be really soft and then it gets really high pitch. And if you have the volume set at a lower level for some songs then you can't hear other songs. I think there are better cds to buy than this one.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Peace.......2007-03-09

I bought this originally for my new nephew/Godson and my brother says he uses it a lot when Mason's mommy is catching a break and a distraction is needed. I listened to it and bought a second copy for myself (7 months pregnant) I don't know how much my baby likes it but I find it extremely relaxing and comforting. Even if it doesn't settle my babe after birth, I will still use it !!!

Beautiful.......2005-05-07

David Tibet/Michael allowed a perfect mix of folk instrumentation and minimal electronic trickery on All The Pretty Little Horses. Guitars, violas, pianos and reed-based instruments swirl gorgeously amongst tiny pools of treated sounds. The contrast of death and child-like innocense is a sublte reminder to be thankful for life. My absolute favourite track has to be "The Blood Bells Chime"; the melody is so transcendant. This is the perfect intro to C93's folk conversion.

I like this "Apocalyptic Folk" cd better than the previous no-sense noise experiences of Dave Tibet. Pretty nice contribution of Nick Cave!!!

Might just be Current 93's best work.......2004-01-16

The centerpiece of "The Inmost Light" trilogy (bookended by the sublimely experimental EPs "Where the Long Shadows Fall" and "The Starres Are Marching Sadly Home"), "All the Pretty Little Horses" represents a culmination of Current 93's folk period--as though everything David Tibet had done since the "Happy Birthday" single had been leading up to this.

It's an album of great majesty and depth, achingly beautiful and profoundly eerie at the same time. The sampled choirs, Nick Cave's deadpan yet heartfelt vocal cameo, and, of course, Tibet's apocalyptic lyrics and unique voice all conspire to make this an essential disc to own.

Broodingly Unimaginative.......2003-03-19

Unlike the sweethearted runway model that isn't stereotypically shallow under her georgeous appearence, this album is one of the models the cliches too often justify. This is Tibets most uninteresting Current album. This nicely packaged album with pictures of Current 93 members as children hones unto the vulnerable trend hating puritans, psuedo intellectuals and ex/present goths that dont own Currents best works(Thunder Perfect Mind, Swastika's For Goddy)

This night timey sleeper of an album has 4 good/ok songs, 5 that already appear on the "Calling For Vanished Faces" compilation that destroys the need for several Current albums that followed "Thunder Perfect Mind" most definately this one particular.

This album contains overworked acoustic pieces that drain themselves out.(the same guitar pieces used in 3 songs... this happens twice in the album! ugh!)Its like hearing a single with remixes of the same song 5 times(god I hate that, I'm not a DJ and wouldn't be a good one useing these tracks anyway)

I know it will be hard to find "Thunder Perfect Mind" as well as Currents other best albums but buy this album for the artwork or mediocre music and not to immerse yourself creative and original music.

Great album.......2002-08-15

One of Current 93's best albums, this CD mixes beautiful folk, twisted psychedlia, and great production. If you aren't familiar with Current 93, this is probably the best album to start with in that it's accessible and sometimes achingly beautiful.

The album as a whole derives loosely from the folk song "All the Pretty Little Horses," and develops into a sprawling fairy-tale like soundscape (think William Blake) with eschatological tendencies. Unlike much of Current 93's earlier work, the religious elements here aren't simply taken for granted. The album, through the motif of darkness and death, suggests a universe abandoned by the gods yet mired in the metaphysics of loss.

I can't stop playing it! Even after my children were lulled to sleep, I played it again and again. You are the new and improved Sara McLachlin combined with Linda Ronstadt. I want to buy a CD for everyone I know who is having a baby or has had one. I hope to hear another CD of Grown-up tunes soon.

ATPH: The Epitome of Rock-N-Roll........2004-04-04

This CD is so amazing that I don't even know where to start. The progression of the band's work suggests that "Creature" is the album that should launch the band into wider acclaim... but we've yet to see it. I can't express the range of emotion that "Creature" conjures. The tracks "White Horses" and "If God Were Caught" seem quite possibly the band's most emotionally-charged songs. The CD includes an mp3 video for "White Horses" which highlights the band's live performance... which is of course great for those who have not had the chance to see this band live- one of THEE best live acts one will experience.
It's hard to choose favorite tracks from "Creature" since all of them are so beautiful in their own way, although honorable mention goes to "White Horses", "If God Were Caught", "Hurricane", "Kissed Adonis", and "Live With a Ghost".
All The Pretty Horses are a true rock-n-roll band, enough said.

Fierce!.......2003-11-26

Went to the premier of their documentary Venus of Mars at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. The film is by Emily Goldberg and not only highlighted the singer Venus but also it's music. Then immediately afterwards ATPH played several songs - I was blown away! They so rocked! I immediately bought the CD in the lobby - And am now listening to it. Rock on ATPH - you're fabulous!

Beautiful music... incredible voice.......2002-07-19

I heard two cuts from this album today on the radio, and raced home to look up whose voice was behind these incredible songs. Julianne Baird has a hauntingly beautiful voice, very soothing and relaxing. Don't be intimidated by the CD cover - this is a great classical album for adults as well as children.
