The Art of Segovia
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan Davis

A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06
This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.
There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.
Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.
What can you say - it's Segovia!.......2007-02-10
I saw Segovia perform live in my youth. What a treat! Anyone who loves Classical Guitar should love this collection.
EVERYBODY KNOWS.......2007-01-13
EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT ANDRES SEGOVIA WAS/IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER. THIS CD IS A COMPILATION OF HIS RECORDINGS FROM THE THE EARLY 50'S TO THE LATE 60'S. HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).
Immortal guitar.......2006-08-02
Two CD's with Segovia's immortal music - an incredible treat at a great price!
WOW.......2006-02-23
Even though there is hiss from the original analog recordings this one is a must. Segovia! What more can you say. Anyone who likes classical guitar will love this.

Do NOT buy this CD.......2005-06-12
This CD is a cruel joke on all who know and venerate Segovia's playing and contribution to the guitar. Were there a zero star rating, I would use it. The sound of the Segovia Bach is grotesquely bad, less clear than, say, a hand-held dictation recorder. The Williams pieces, in apparent sympathy, are almost as bad, though there is no apparent reason that we couldn't have better clarity from more modern recordings. I am neither kidding nor being malicious: for example, the overloading on crescendi is so bad that it is painful to hear. If you want to understand Segovia's impact on classical music, save the 7 bucks that you would have spent for this CD and get the Deutsche Grammaphon "Art of Segovia" instead.
lovely.......2004-06-14
John Williams is perhaps Andre Segovia's most famous student, which makes this juxtaposition interesting indeed. I also recommend the Bach interpretations of Christopher Parkening and Ron Rendek.
Segovia and Williams: pure guitar emotions!.......2003-12-06
This is a great cd of Bach's pieces renditions by the legendary Andres Segovia and the great John Williams. The quality of recordings for Segovia is not high (old recordings)anyway you can listen to his enchanting playin! "Chaconne" played on classical guitar by the Maestro is a marvellous experience!
John William's sound is good and in this case is fantastic to listen to his renditions of Bach: awesome technique, absolute precision and of course amazin style.
Deep emotion sometimes lacking in other classical music........2003-07-24
The Art of Guitar is an album of classical pieces composed by Bach and performed by Andres Segovia. Many of the pieces were originally composed for the lute, and Segovia has adapted them to the classical guitar. Some musicians prefer the classical style as purely a means to display their playing prowess. Although Segovia demonstrates his exceptional technical skill, it is truly the spirit he injects into the music he plays that makes him a legend. The second track, Partita for solo violin No. 2 in D minor arranged for guitar, is a good example of music that conveys deep emotion without a single word. This one piece is twelve minutes, and along its journey many different musical ideas and emotions are explored and expressed. Even as the piece progresses it should be noted that there is a musical phrase that is often returned to and repeated, however it is done in great variation, but the same concept is maintained. A note or chord is played short and accented, and then the following note or chord is much longer, sometimes with a vibrato, and is a pitch descending in approximately a whole step or half step interval. The musical idea created by this emphasized descending interval is one of bittersweet sorrow, but because of the simplicity in the implementation of this phrase, Bach is able to communicate other musical ideas along side the basic one. In this Segovia demonstrates his mastery of the guitar by his ability to clearly define voices. The bass line, melody, and chord progression all have distinguishable separation among each other, despite the fact that they must all be expressed through a single sound hole by a single performer all at once. This is something that is rarely, if ever, accomplished by a player of mainstream popular guitar who, in the absence of the skill required, frequently opt to divide these three elements among three different musicians. One could say that Segovia contains the technical skill of three guitarist combined, and perhaps the same could be said for the amount of emotion and creativity that he expresses in what he plays.

Hidden Treasures..........2005-03-25
This CD, along with the Golden Years of Andres Segovia 1952 - 1954 contains unreleased (until now) recordings on CD from Segovia's first six vinyl lp's on the Decca label. These have been digitally remastered at the same bit rate as the recent re-releases from Deutsche Grammophon of Segovia's Decca (MCA) recordings.
So the recordings sound great and match up perfectly with the DG recordings! Even more important than that, this CD along with the one mentioned above, one can now reconstruct entirely, or "burn" or "rip" three of Segovia's early Decca Lp recordings, (i.e. An Evening with Andres Segovia..DL9733, Segovia Plays..DL9734, and the historical and very yellow jacket cover of the "Chaconne"..DL9751.) plus a fair portion of three earlier vinyl Lp's. (i.e. An Andres Segovia Recital DL9633, An Andres Segovia Concert DL9638, and An Andres Segovia Program DL9647.)
I apologize for all the information and catalog numbers but I'm trying to make a point. Yes, Segovia was a great guitarist and musician, but in recent years with the recording industry such as it is, and current marketing techniques, the concept of those early Lp's have long since been lost. And in essence ...the true art of Andres Segovia...
Do yourself a favor and purchase the above mentioned CD's, and do some research (i.e. the library of Congress is a good place to start or even try Ebay.) and reconstruct those original Lp's. That's how Segovia should be and purposely intenteded to be heard, at least with in the limits of sound recording.

Amazon.com essential recording
It's a strange fact, but many of the most popular Spanish guitar pieces are actually transcriptions of piano originals. Of course, many of these actually use the piano in imitation of the guitar, and if a guitarist of Segovia's ability had been around at the turn of the century, there might have been a lot more authentic guitar music written than we now have. Segovia's particular gift, evident in the Albeniz pieces, is to make this piano music sound like guitar originals. In short, this essential CD contains many of the most famous Spanish guitar favorites in inimitable performances. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
It's in the books!.......2007-06-28
What I like most about Andres Segovia's recordings is the fact that most of what he plays is in my classical guitar books - this CD included. Usually, I learn a classical guitar song, cold. I have no idea how it sounds or how it's suppose to sound. I continue to play these songs without knowing, exactly, how long each note is played or at what dynamic. One day, I bought this CD and realized Segovia was playing a percentage of songs that were in my classical guitar books. From this recording, I went out and purchased some more. I realized, every recording of Segovia's is in my books. I bought Ana Vidovic's recordings and Eliot Fisk's and didn't see many of their recordings in the books. I checked out John Williams and Christopher Parkening and found a few of theirs, but not as many as the Maestro. Segovia made it his life's duty to record all the known works for the the guitar and to seek out new compositions for the guitar. He recorded them, and they appear in World's Favorite Solo's for Classic Guitar and Pure Classical Guitar Solos along with Fifty Pieces for Guitar, and a host of others. Check out all of Segovia's recorded volumes and you'll see that many of his tunes are popular in the book world. After buying everything Segovia ever recorded, check out John Williams and Christopher Parkening. Once you have everything of theirs, collect everything from The Guitar Foundation of America's contest winners. You can find them on the internet -- just google "gfa". Thanks to Segovia's recordings, I'm a better player. Five stars!!!
The perfect introduction to Andres Segovia.......2007-04-21
This cd has many of the most popular Romantic works (many of which were transcribed from piano to guitar) that all classical guitar enthusiasts know and love. Segovia is perfectly at home with these works (most of them being Spanish), and I can't listen to anyone else play a single piece on this disk after hearing the Maestro here. If you know a guitar geek that doesn't have many cds on the classical side of six strings, you MUST give this gift.
Segovia incomparable!.......2005-07-24
What can I say? Though other fine guitarists have recorded much of the music on this CD, Segovia's playing is incomparable, a joy to hear, the standard by which all other guitarists must be judged.
This CD, Volume 3 of The Segovia Collection (MCA) contains several works by Albeniz (Sevilla, Granada, Zambra Granadina, Leyenda), as well as those by Torroba (Piezas Carateristicas), Tarrega (Recuerdos de la Alhambra), Granados (Tonadilla), Turina (Sevillana), and Sor (excerpts from the Twenty Studies) among others.
This CD is worth having even if it mostly duplicates DGG's The Segovia Collection (4 CDs) because it gathers so many fine works on one CD, it is a fine example of Segovia'a art, and it is attractive pricewise for the collector not interested in purchasing the 4CD DGG Box. Though out of print, it is available from Amazon.com's Marketplace Sellers.
One correction: Segovia performs Sor Studies nos. 14 in A Major, 16 in G Major, 5 in B Minor, and 12 in A Major, NOT the Studies listed (the keys that the studies are in is correct).
Classical Guitar!!.......2001-06-29
what more can I say. I love classical guitar and this CD is one of the best. I have the entire Segovia collection and I strongly recommend this CD, along with all the rest in the collection.
Top Classical Guitar Recording Ever.......2001-06-29
The standard by which all else is judged! As a classical guitarist for over 25 years, I can assure you this is the definitive classical guitar recording of the 19th century. When you combine the powerfully romantic music of arguably the most notable composer of the guitar with the recordings, both old and new, of unarguably the "Master" of the classical guitar, the result is a recording that may never be equalled. Each piece is imaginative, stirring and emotional. This is a must for anyone who enjoys not only the Spanish Guitar but simply music at its best!
