Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2; Piano Sonata No. 1 [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews

Two supreme masterpieces of the piano literature played by a supreme master of the instrument--could there be a more felicitous combination? Brahms wrote his first sonata in 1853, his second concerto almost 30 years later; Richter recorded the concerto in 1960 on his first American tour, the sonata almost 30 years later live at a barn in Germany. The sonata is so formidable technically and musically that it is performed very rarely; the concerto, one of Brahms's greatest mature works, has become a beloved staple of the repertoire. Richter, a well-hidden Soviet treasure until the end of the Cold War, became an instant sensation in the West, and this recording proves again that his playing was unique. It combined seemingly incompatible qualities: his tone had the transparent lucidity of fine lace, with impeccably articulated passage-work and perfectly balanced voicing both in contrapuntal lines and chords, yet it also had an infinite range of colors and inflections; sonorous and sustained, as if he were caressing rather than striking the keys, it was never harsh and could go from massive power to an elfin, gossamer delicacy. His mental and emotional concentration were riveting: he could spin long, arching phrases, build up tension and intensity, and maintain a sense of structure and coherence; his transitions and mood changes were poised and organic. His Brahms interpretation is monumental: classically austere, yet romantically free and ardent, it enters into the youthful, heroic tempestuousness of the sonata and the wistful, dreamy melancholy and profound inwardness of the concerto; the slow movements are pure magic. From the first notes of the very expansive, other-worldly opening of the concerto we know that we are about to embark on an extraordinary experience. The orchestra matches the pianist's every mood and expression and sounds rich and glorious; the prominent horn and cello solos are wonderful. --Edith Eisler

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
