If I do make it to heaven, I don't know what it will look like, but I do know what it will sound like - listen to the vocals in the Second Movement: Andante . They are worth the price of the whole CD.......

Glorious!.......2006-01-18
This recording of the Cambridge Singers has them recording pieces composed by their own director, John Rutter. The Gloria is Rutter's version of a standard piece of liturgical music, representing influences ancient and modern. This was recorded at in 1984, with the City of London Sinfonia and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble collaborating.
--Music--
The Gloria is a piece in three movements. The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble performs with the Cambridge Singers and soloists Mary Seers, Mary Hitch, and Caroline Ashton. This includes organ music and timpani/percussion. The Gloria is one of Rutter's earliest works, written as a commissioned piece for an American group (Voices of Mel Olson, Omaha, Nebraska). The three movements are reminiscent of standard symphonic structure. The outer movements are more boisterous ('make a joyful noise unto the Lord'), whereas the middle movement is more introspective and subdued.
The other pieces included here are anthems, bright and cheery, fully orchestrated and performed with spirit. There are three pieces that are a capella, reflecting Rutter's and the Cambridge Singers' passion for this medium.
--Liner Notes--
The notes include an introduction to the CD by Rutter describing some of the influences and expressions in his composition. Lyrics are included, and where the original is in Latin, an English translation is provided. There is no listing of the performers of the Cambridge Singers, no description of the group, nor biographical information about John Rutter.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
This is a glorious recording!
Absolutely beautiful.......2004-11-08
This is a fabulous rendition of Rutter's music. The 23rd Psalm and the closing blessing are just outstanding.

Nice, but..........2001-01-04
This is a good interpretation of Poulenc's Gloria but by no means it beats Hickox's recorded version of this famous work:the "andamento"!...
Clearly performed, good music........2000-06-21
Anyone want to get aquainted with Poulenc's choral music should buy this CD. You will find some unexpectedly neat, good music in it. Here they are performed in a quite clear, correct atmosphere and interpretation. Rutter and Cambridge singers handle these good music very well. The record gets a bit over-echoed, but it is still ok.
Glorious!.......1999-12-21
The Poulance Gloria is world class music at its best and the Rutter recording is the best rendition I've ever heard.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-06-08
This is truly an excellent compilation of outstanding works from King' College Choir. It involves three different eras: Sir David Willcocks dlrects 10 numbers dating from 1970-1977; Sir Philip Ledger directs 4 numbers dating from 1975-1982 and Stephan Cleobury directs 5 numbers dating from 1984-2002.
Familiar works are set alongside neglected choral treasures, the collection ranging from Allegri and Tallis to Tavener and Rutter; from John Dyke's stirring hymn 'Holy, holy, holy' to Britten's colorful description of the birth of St. Nicholas and his serene setting of the medieval carol 'There is no Rose'.
The recording is directly from the King's College which is known for its excellent acoustics among other things; that being the perfectly wonderful King's College Choir. This choir has become famous throughout the world and as you will hear on this disc, it doesn't matter what year or what conductor, it is always perfection, in tone quality, balance, emotional investment, diction and anything else one expects from a good singing group!!! I totally enjoyed every listening moment!!!!

Customer Reviews:
The story behind the recording.......2004-12-15
I must admit that I was a member of S.F. Choral Artsists and sang on this recording, which was made in 1985, I believe. It's become a favorite of many friends who enjoy a capella choral singing. We recorded it in the lovely St. Ignatius Church on the campus of University of San Francisco, which happens to be on a very busy bus line. We could not record until after midnight because the sounds of the bus could be heard inside the wonderful cathedral with its incredible reverberation. The Reference Recordings folks were using the high-tech digital mastering technology and planned to issue the recording on something new called a CD, an original one of which I have, as well as the traditional LP which was the original big seller. So, after work each day we'd get together to have dinner and practice in the early evening, and then about midnight begin recording until 5am, for several nights straight. One of my fondest memories is recording the gorgeous Wilcox arrangement of "What Child Is This?" about 4am. The sense of the still of the night sounds still comes through on the recording, as does the somehwat ghostly "Happy New Year" at the end of the "Deck the Hall." It's nice to see that is is still available, and I hope folks enjoy it.
Star of Wonder-Music for the Seasons.......2000-12-13
"Star of Wonder" is a lovely CD of Christmas-themed music, some familiar and some new. If you enjoy beautiful a cappella singing and love Christmas music, you will want to own this CD. The ensemble is superb, and the soprano sound has a pure, chrystalline, single-voice quality that is quite unique. While most of the singing is unaccompanied, some pieces are enhanced by the evocative quality of a flute, handbells or harp. This CD is a joyful discovery.

Gloria for the 2nd time, The Best grand recording !!!.......2001-10-18
This CD is highly recomended the grandeure of the work is done perfecly by the wallace collections and the polyphony itself. The most dramatic recording of anthems of rutter, happy to listen too a happy recording.
Sweet but sturdy.......2001-07-02
The music of John Rutter consistently provokes mixed reactions amongst musical circles. There are those who cannot stand it, seeing it as tasteless and even annoying; some enjoy certain aspects of his output but do not love it all; some can find nothing but praise for it. As one who has performed various works and arrangements of his, I feel that it certainly can be overly 'saccharine' in the light of the other serious classical music being written today - yet it is unfailingly well-written, offering genuine challenges to those who perform it. And beyond all the sugary melodies and soupy harmonies, Rutter is capable of producing moments of real heart-wrenching emotion. Indeed, it says much of him that he can create memorable, 'hummable' tunes in an age wherein such a skill is perhaps looked upon as anachronistic.
It certainly says much of Rutter that this is now the second disc that the elite Hyperion company have devoted entirely to his music. Those who know and love his "Requiem" through its many commercially-available recordings will recognise many similar elements in "Gloria," obviously a more exubrant and joyful concert work, which is presented here with an effective scoring for organ, brass and percussion. It is at a glance reminiscent of a concerto, with three movements (two loud and fast ones, sandwiching a slower central movement) and recurring themes that are tossed between chorus and accompaniment. The opening is immediately characteristic of Rutter: the combined rhythms and fanfare-like motifs make it sound almost like the opening to some hit musical, and contrast is provided by utterances of unaccompanied chorus in which harmony is the most interesting element. The second movement - "Domine Deus" - features a gently undulating, flute-like solo from the organ, which is worked through gentle brass chorales and beautifully crafted sung passages, with a genuinely moving use of solo sopranos and altos. The third movement - "Quoniam tu solus sanctus" - brings back the boppy nature of the first movement, and quite startlingly includes what appears to be a fugue in the chorus parts! As a whole, it is easy to see why this work is not perhaps as popular as the "Requiem," but it is no less full of worthwhile things to listen out for.
The rest of the disc is made up of various church pieces, several of which are widely used as church anthems throughout England and beyond - "As the bridegroom to his chosen" and "Thy perfect love" are especially popular for their memorable tunes. Two of the unaccompanied works are quite arresting: "Come down, O love Divine," with its echoes of Herbert Howells and 'open ended' concluding cadence, and the tiny "Clare Benediction," dating from Rutter's time as Director of Music at that Cambridge College Chapel - for this, he provided his own text and the result is as potent as any large-scale choral masterpiece could be. There are also a few that are less well-known, and indeed one which has only recently been premiered - "I my Best-Beloved's am," first performed by Polyphony under Stephen Layton. These pieces (with the exception of "Praise the Lord, O my soul" and "Te Deum," which are accompanied by the same forces as in "Gloria") feature Rutter's own orchestrations, which can either heighten or ruin their effectiveness, depending upon your point of view - I was hoping to hear these with organ accompaniment, as they would be heard in a typcial church service. On the other hand, these arrangements show a fine sense of orchestral colour and demonstrate Rutter's penchant for making his music as useful as possible to all manner of performers, whether they specialise in the church or the concert platform.
Polyphony make light work of this programme. The works with organ, brass and percussion, recorded in the generous but subtle acoustics of Winchester Cathedral, suffer slightly from a poor balance: I am surprised that Hyperion were unable to save the choir from being drowned in the loudest and most climactic moments, wherein we lose not only the words but (nearly!) the voices themselves. Then again, the problem might also have been solved by augmenting the choir with extra singers - Polyphony is after all a chamber choir, whereas "Gloria" was clearly intended for choral societies with hundreds of massed voices. The anthems fare much better: recorded in the dry acoustics of a London church, supported by the small but potent forces of the City of London Sinfonia, Polyphony really get to the heart of these pieces. Stephen Layton directs well too - fast pieces are treated with vigour whereas the slower and more intimate ones are allowed to 'breathe' in a natural way that avoids sounding "hammy."
If you're approaching Rutter for the first time, I wouldn't recommend starting with this disc; the "Requiem" is a far better work to begin with. However, if you're already a 'Rutterphile,' then there is no reason to hesitate: this makes for rewarding listening.
Bravo!.......2001-06-15
Being a fan of John Rutter, I found this new recording, on Hyperion label, of the Gloria and sacred music, one of the best yet. The choir and orchestra are to be commended on the delicate and yet vibrant performance. The Polyphony choir, though only consisting of about 25 voices, produces a powerful and well rounded sound. I really enjoyed this recording and it was great to hear a few new anthems. The sound was very clear and the choir's annunciation was well articulated, so that you hear every word. I have most of his works and a great admirer of the Cambridge Singers, though I will put this Hyperion recording there, right next to John Rutter's choir. I was pleased to hear that the organ, especially in the Gloria and Te Deum could be clearly heard, but not dominating the voices or the orchestra. A very balanced sound throughout. The Wallace Collection, added to the City of London Sinfonia, gave that very `Ruttorian' brassy sound. Very impressive! This wonderful recording is a real joy to listen to. Bravo!!!

Long a favorite of amateur choristers, John Rutter's three-movement Gloria is by turns touching and thrilling, alternating soaring vocal lines with contemporary harmonies, catchy rhythms, and the power of the Phillip Jones Brass Ensemble. The premiere recording, with Rutter himself conducting his Cambridge Singers, is filled out with 10 of his short anthems, including the sprightly "O Clap Your Hands," the serenely beautiful "A Gaelic Blessing," and "The Lord Is My Shepherd" movement from his Requiem. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
Glorious!.......2005-10-05
This recording of the Cambridge Singers has them recording pieces composed by their own director, John Rutter.
Sacred Music.......2005-07-28
Very inspiring. Will definitely drive me to eventually acquire all of this composer's work.
Excellent.......2004-12-16
This music is FANTASTIC!!! John Rutter is an amazing composer! This is a lush an wonderful sounding piece of music. It's a pleasure to sing as well as to listen to.
Let's be honest.......2004-05-02
This stuff is tacky. John Rutter's compositions are notorious among real musicians for being cheap and sentimental. His anthems are the church-music equivalent of the Big Mac, which has sold billions and billions of copies, but which neither nourishes nor satisfies. The music quickly bores the serious musician and leaves him with a tune he wishes he could get out of his head. If you like Rutter's music, go to it; he's produced a bevy of CDs to keep you happy. But don't mistake it for real music. Rutter is an unabashed sellout who's made a pretty penny pandering to people's basest musical tastes.
Gloria: The Sacred Music of John Rutter.......2003-10-23
The name John Rutter is synonymous with beautiful choral music and this album is a perfect example of that beauty. With the rich vocals of the Cambridge Singers and the elegance of Rutter's compositions, this album will bring joy to all who love fine choral music. It includes past favorites like For The Beauty of the Earth as well as his masterful composition Gloria in three wonderful movements.
