The Best of the Renaissance
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
As hateful and usually untrue as most "Best of" collections are, this one is the real thing. You actually do get two hours and 20 minutes of Renaissance music performed so exquisitely, so correctly, and so passionately that it's as if an entire era in music makes itself understood through these CDs. The Tallis Scholars are as good as it gets in this repertoire. In addition to getting Allegri's gorgeous Miserere, you'll find Thomas Tallis's 40-part (40!) Spem in alium, some wonderfully weird and dissonant Responsories by Gesualdo, Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli (the "how-to" piece of the Renaissance popes, who demanded that the words be understood), and various other works. This stuff is like a finely woven tapestry and should be listened to bits at a time--it's amazingly rich and worth it. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:
And Rampal gave the flute life..........2005-12-14
People may say that James Galway is the best flutist around, but after hearing his music with a big disappointment, I decided to see what the other master flutist had to offer.
Jean-Pierre Rampal's flute music is, without doubt, the most brilliantly expressed. It is a technical work of art that only a true master flutist can do. His performance is highly expressed through technical mastery. By using complex musical techniques, he gives the flute a magical breath of life more humanly expressed than supposed. Such techniques he uses to make his flute come alive in one of the highest expressions are extremely fast melodic transitions, rigorous articulation, ironic microphonics, and human emotion.
After hearing this album, I put my faith back into flute music. I don't believe Galway should be considered a master flutist alongside Rampal. Rampal's music is flexibile and expressive, while Galway's music is shrill and repetitive. I hope most people will come to realize Rampal's technical beauty in his music.
Tremendous.......2003-08-12
Jean-Pierre's music is amazing. I have enjoyed it thoroughly. I highly recommend this for any classical music fan.
Wonderful Collection of Flute Masterpieces Played by Master.......2003-01-09
One of the greatest flutists plays some of the best flute compositions here collected in a single disc.
From Bach to Mozart to Handel to Ibert and Poulenc, they're all here played by Rampal.
Great addition to any collecter of classical that enjoys flute.

Customer Reviews:
Great collection.......2005-10-15
This is one of my favorite hits collections. Prism is virtually ignored by rock radio today, but the KSHE classics show turned me on to the band. VIRGINIA and ARMAGEDDON are classics that don't get their just due today. SEE FOREVER EYES is a sing along joy to listen to. The set does leave off HELLO and JULIE, but what is here is great.
A Missing Link, Of Sorts.......2005-07-11
While this Canada band never made much of a splash outside of Canada they did represent something of a missing link between the pompous "progressive rock" of the early and mid 70's (Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and pre-Phil Collins Genesis) and the generic arena rock the was in vogue in the late 70's to mid 80's (Styx, Journey, REO Speedwagon). Although they managed to land a total of five songs on the US singles chart only one of those, "Don't Let Him Know," was able to crack the top 50 were it peaked at #39 in the late winter/early spring of 1982. If that song is even remembered today at all it is as the subject of trivia as it was written by one Bryan Adams who himself would make a big splash on the arena rock circuit during much of the mid 80's beginning about a year and a half later.
It is difficult to imagine anyone getting too terribly excited about this stuff at this late date, but if this is still your sort of thing, here you are. Have at it.
prismatic fanatic.......2003-01-17
I just love this stuff. We were lucky enough to have them playing at our high school dances in Surrey B.C. and listening to the sample cuts just makes me want to go out and buy this cd again.American music,Cover girl are timeless classics that just stick in your mind. Take me to the Kaptain and Spaceship Superstar absolutely rock you. If you love power pop with a kick you will love Prism.
I was not that impressed........2000-05-13
This CD is alright but far from great. No one take this personally as I am not a PRISM fan, I had never heard much about PRISM until I listened to this CD from a friend.
There are a few songs that stuck out for me though. American Music has to be one of those great songs that just gets imprinted in my mind, just a great song. I find it a bit ironic that one of the the best songs by this Canadian band is American Music(Canadian Music anyone?) Take me to the Kaptain and Spaceship Superstar are also great memorable tracks.
Apart from the tracks listed above, this album did not blow me away and was not as interesting as similar bands. I actually listened to Journey's Greatest Hits right after this CD and while I am not the biggest Journey fan, I must say I was more interested in the latter than the former.
NOT JUST ANOTHER CANADIAN BAND.......2000-04-30
PRISM HAS TO BE ONE THE FINEST CANADIAN BANDS EVER..IF YOU LIKE LOVERBOY--RED RIDER--ALDO NOVA & JOURNEY,I RECOMMEND THIS CD ,WHICH CAPTURES THE BEST OF PRISM..I SPECIALLY HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THE SONG..DON'T LET HIM KNOW--THANKS AMAZON FOR HELPING ME ADD THIS CD TO MY COLLECTION..

Customer Reviews:
Great value, if slightly substandard recordings, for classical newbie.......2007-03-24
"100 Best Baroque" is what it seems - a compilation of the 100 definitive Baroque compositions. For a very low price you get a complete overview of the Baroque style, and while the sound quality of the recordings will not satisfy a serious student or fan of classical music, they are more than enough for a classical neophyte such as myself.
The compilation breaks down the songs into six categories on six separate CDs:
1. England and the Baroque - Handel's Zadok the Priest and Messiah, Purcell's O Solitude, Byrd's With Lillies White, etc.
2. The Best of Italian Baroque - Handel's Alcina and others, Albinoni's Adagio, Gabrielli's Sonata Pian e forte, Vivaldi's "Summer," etc.
3. Treasures of the Mediterranean Baroque - Vivaldi's Gloria, Boccherini's Guitar Quintet in E, Soler's Fandango, etc.
4. The Glory of French Baroque - Philidor, Lully, De Lalande, etc.
5. Bach and His Time - Pachelbel's Canon in D, J.S. Bach's Cantanta, Telemann, etc.
6. The Genius of Bach - all Bach selections.
The sound recordings are of secondary quality as one could expect for such a low-budget item as this. Still, this collection is perfect for the casual listener or for background music. That does not mean that the quality is poor - far from it - it's just not as good as what you can expect from some higher-priced CDs.
All in all, a fantastic value.

music for easy-listenings fans.......2007-07-15
If you are into soft easy-listening music this album is a good choice. I recomend it highly.
Hey Bruce, You'd Better Start Sueing Away ..........2006-06-16
I bought a seventies collection of hits for the sole purpose of acquiring "Moonlight Feels Right",(sorry, can't give more specifics). It said on the cover, "New recordings by original artists." I can tell by listening to the sample here that we're talking about the same version, (heavy clavinet sound). It seems to be the only version available anymore. I gave it three stars because compared with other "new recordings", it's not bad. But if you don't get a handle on it, might down down in history as "original recording by original artists"!
Second biggest hit not even on this CD.......2006-06-14
(I Got to Know) was the 2nd biggest hit and its not even here that is strange how can you call this a greatest hits then
A Note From The Artist.......2004-07-01
I am Bruce Blackman, the lead singer and songwriter of Starbuck. This CD is made from my old practice tapes and "underwear demos". These songs ARE NOT STARBUCK! This CD is illegal and unlicensed. The company that put this out is now bankrupt so we can't pursue them legally. However, another bogus CD "The Very Best Of Starbuck" is now out containing the same tracks. We will shut them down shortly.
Starbuck: Not a bad Atlanta band.......2002-07-06
Hi,
I am a musician in the Atlanta area. In the 70s, these guys were actually the "hot dogs" around town. They were really very good. As a matter of fact, several of the musicians who were in this band are still performing around Atlanta. Although I was into Southern Rock in those days,I loved this song. I still perform around the Southeast, and "Moonlight Feels Right" is one of the songs we play through our sound system during our breaks. I don't know what the album sounds like, but the single of "Moonlight" is a great pop hit.I am glad it still sells.

Even Chris Thompson wouldn't want to be remembered like this........2007-01-24
It pains me to write negative reviews. After all, much opinion is subjective, even that of sound quality. (Sadly) I know people who cannot distinguish the difference in sound between a disc played on a $100 Chinese sound system and one played on a $10,000 high-end SACD system. That said, you can probably see where I am heading here. The programme contents of this 'Best of" compilation are fine, covering the artist's solo work, that with his band Night, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Alan Parsons project - even a single with Sarah Brightman - no real complaints there. However, it is the sound quality, or rather lack of it, that lets this retrospective down. If you read 'Charlie Bear's' review of 'Night', you will find a list of what he describes as the record label's trangressions, and many of them appear on this release also:
* bad sonics
* inconsistent db levels
* thin shallow sound
It seems Renaissance Records are the culprit again. What should have been a satisfying overview of Chris Thompson's career has turned out to be a thoroughly frustrating listening experience. According to the liner notes, John W Edwards of Renaissance is responsible for the 'digital remastering' (shame on you Mr Edwards), and the whole product is licensed by Chris Thompson to Renaissance. Bet you he wishes he'd picked another label.
In conclusion, this disc is only recommended to those whose 'ear' is not particularly discerning. 2 stars for the titles included.

A semi famous vocalist and a tryptich of guitar heroes.......2006-07-26
Graham Bonnet is well known within hard rock circles of a certain age due to his presence in Rainbow and then a stint in MSG. so at the time of the birth of Alcatrazz it's probably fair to say that all he had to do was turn up and he'd be offered a record deal.
Anyway, this release showcases tunes from all four Alcatrazz albums. Luckily for the newcomer this best of is organised in chronological order which is a great bonus. First up are the Yngwie tracks, both from No Parole from Rock 'n' Roll and the Live Sentence release. The live tracks include All Night Long and Since You've Been Gone, tunes Yngwie would of loved due to their Blackmore associations. Regardless, the tunes are a varying bunch, the first three tracks each having their own feel. In fact Yngwie played some of these tunes in the early days of his own solo career.
Next up is Steve Vai who unfairly was heckled by some of the bands fans after replacing Malmsteen. Here the guy fits into the role - actually playing straight, proper songs - not something his solo work is exactly litttered with....
Last on the revolving guitar playing spot is Danny Johnson. Without prior personal fame he is perhaps the least illustrious of the bands axe meistros but he handles his duties with aplomb. And just like Yngwie and Vai he co-wrotes a bunch of tunes.
A dilemna for me personally is Bonnets voice. In some indefinable way it just doesn't grab me and is too rough too much of the time But no denying his rapport with a suitably adoring Japanese crown on the live tracks here. And the subject matter spans a range of issues (presumably Bonnet was lyricist) and that helps keep this collection fresh. Ultimately this isn't a bad album but then again it didn't inspre me to buy their back catalogue.
For the anoraks out there - the rest of the band comprised Jan Uvena, Jimmy Waldo and Gary Shea - the latter two from AOR band New England. Shea is actually responsible for the liner notes to this release.
Who picked these songs?.......2004-03-09
Way back in the day I had the entire Alcatrazz canon (such as it was, only 3 studio albums and one live set) on cassette. The three studio albums were kind of spotty and the live album was inessential, but there were some good tunes to be found.
Since the original albums are available on cd only as very pricey imports, it would seem to me (and to casual fans or the curious I'm sure) a sensible move to pick up this domestic compilation. Well, it would have been if someone had chosen the right songs.
I can't really argue with the selections from "No Parole" or "Live Sentence", but "Disturbing The Peace" and "Dangerous Games" are completely misrepresented here. Somehow they managed to pick 9 songs from these two albums and still miss the highlights, especially on "Dangerous Games". Oh, well. May be the original albums will get reissued domestically someday.
Note: My comments are based on the quality of the songs chosen, not the quality of the playing of Mssrs. Malmsteen and Vai. If you are a total frethead may be these were the best tracks?
Dangerous Games- Alcatrazz's sadly overlooked swan opus.......2002-12-24
Although this compilation focuses on Alcatrazz's greatest hits culled from its three studio albums and one live album, I have chosen here to review the band's last work, Dangerous Games, individually, as this anthology is (as of now) the only available means to hear a few songs from that underrated LP which I believe merits its own attention. Should it hopefully become available online as a separate entry, I will accordingly move this review. Consequently, I will not review here the songs for No Parole which I have written elsewhere under that album's title.
After collaborating with two of the arguably most technically proficient guitarists in rock- Yngwie and Steve Vai- at the time of their third album Alcatrazz was confronted with a formidable juncture: either to find another guitarist of comparable virtuosity- a meager prospect given their past alumni- or operate as a cohesive band emphasizing solid songwriting over flashy soloing. With the resultant product of Dangerous Games, Alcatrazz clearly chose the latter, a wise option which not only permitted the band to establish its own identity bereft of an axe god, but also enabled hitherto marginalized members like Gary Shea and Jimmy Waldo to rise to the forefront. While Vai's replacement Danny Johnson is a capable shredder in his own right- he had to be, as he had to pass what was then surely one of the toughest auditions in rock music- Alcatrazz undoubtedly must placed an interdict upon him not to overshadow the band like his stellar predecessors. Thus, it is no accident that Johnson's solos are short and concise, thereby granting breathing space to his bandmates. As this is intentionally Alcatrazz's least ostentatious output, the album acquires an understated appeal and modesty otherwise lacking in its predecessors. Unlike No Parole which instantly fascinated and enthralled the listener, Dangerous Games is a less immediate album which requires patience and several listenings to be fully appreciated. On a personal level, apart from the excellent- and most rocking- tracks "It's My Life," "Undercover," and "Tokyo," I was initially unimpressed with this album and was nostalgic for the unremitting assault of No Parole. However, after a few listens, I quickly came to respect this album in its own right as the overlooked coda to Alcatrazz's sadly short career.
Even still, "It's My Life" remains the finest track on the album, a fitting opener which instantly grabs the listener like No Parole through its powerful verses and anthemic chorus. Given the band's acute financial, label, and management problems which resulted in their dispersal shortly after this album's release, when Graham sings the opening verse, "It's a tough world to get by, all the good things are taken," we know he is not rehashing a rock cliche about tribulations long transcended
but speaking from contemporary experience. Unlike most acclaimed rock vocalists nearing forty who comfortably reminisce about their early hardships from the lofty porch of their mansions, Graham unfortunately not only lacked such affluence but was still struggling to find a secure band for himself. Thus, in addition to imbuding deeper insight in his lyrics, his comments are refreshingly sincere and genuine. Though the inclusion of a cover of Graham's old Marbles hit "Only One Woman" is an obvious illustration that Alcatrazz just barely had enough original songs to fill an album, overall the songwriting is competent, and at times, exceptional. "Undercover" and "Tokyo" both benefit from catchy choruses and Graham's frequently excellent studio vocals, in contrast to much of his inconsistent live performances. His delivery peaks on the all-too-short closing number "Night of the Shooting Star," where his a cappella harmony is impeccably recorded via multiple tracks, which proved what an outstanding vocalist he was when he sang in an comfortable middle register unconcerned with screaming his lungs out.
"Double Man" features additional contemplative lyrics in the tradition of "Starcarr Lane," albeit in a darker vein as Graham incisively describes an encounter with his sinister doppelganger. However, the most intriguing cut is Witchwood, a song whose supernatural themes are augmented by the melodic, restrained, and ethereal colorings by keyboardist Jimmy Waldo. Although not a virtuoso (at least not revealed during his Alcatrazz tenure) and primarily inclined towards rhythmic embellishments, Waldo here amply illustrates his strong songwriting with the regulation of Johnson allowing his capabilities to finally be appreciated in their own right throughout Dangerous Games. Clearly he was the unsung hero of the band, as his contributions were undoubtedly decisive in molding "Island in the Sun," "General Hospital," "Kree Nakoorie," and "Starcarr Lane" into fantastic tracks possessing a unique potency and inspiration never quite recaptured on Yngwie's solo albums. Unfortunately, due to Yngwie's brilliant neo-classical frenzy and Vai's kinetic jazz-metal axework, Waldo's contributions were easily minimized, especially live. However, his invigorated performance on Dangerous Games underscore that Waldo was indispensable, even if on a collective level, in providing elements of the magic that graced Alcatrazz's catalogue.
Although the undeniable stylistic changes of Alcatrazz's studio output have prompted unfair conclusions that the guitar heroes were decisive in writing the music, these contentions are inaccurate in neglecting the elements which were continuous throughout the band's existence- Graham's powerful voice, insightful lyrics, and Waldo's restrained keyboard- which gave Alcatrazz a unique identity of its own separate from Yngwie and Vai. Assisted by a sharp, crisp production- the best of all its albums- Dangerous Games comes closest to exhibiting Alcatrazz as a balanced band with the bass and drums clearly audible. This album's commerical failure and the band's subsequent demise were both products of unfortunate financial woes and lacklustre label support, yet within a mere three years Alcatrazz produced a formidable, diverse catalogue which will not be easily forgotten and prompts hopes that a reunion will somedy materialize whereby the band will obtain long overdue success and artistic recognition.
Get It For Yngwie.......2001-04-25
Overall this album is very average leaning towards weak. The saving grace is hearing a relatively young Yngwie Malmsteen. The songs themselves just occupy time until Yngwie's solos save the day. The exception is "Hiroshima Mon Amour," which deserves recognition as a metal classic! Stirring, soul touching and powerful both musically and lyrically, this song makes the album! "Hiroshima..." also contains a truly memorable Malmsteen solo! After the first half of the album Yngwie is replaced by Steve Vai--and later by another musician--on lead guitar, and the music becomes rather forgettable. However, I still recommend buying the album just to experience the musical mastery of Yngwie Malmsteen.

Truly a "must have" for any Crack fan.......2001-08-23
I have several Crack albums on vinyl, and had been looking for them on CD for years. Was led to believe that the early stuff on CD was limited to, and quickly snapped up by, fan club members. Imagine my complete astonishment when I found this disk in the store. This is truly a "best of" compilation with the notable absence of "Robots For Ronnie". As other reviewers have mentioned, it is difficult to categorize Crack The Sky. "Complicated hard rock with jazz influences" doesn't quite cover it, although it's generally the best I can come up with. I am happy that Amazon now seems to have at least some of their music available. If you're a fan of intricate music and/or good rock and roll, check this out. You won't be disappointed.
The best from the Best.......2001-01-21
How can you describe Crack the Sky's music?? That's like trying to describe nuclear physics to a truck driver from Idaho.Quirky, odd, viseral, and outstanding come to mind. Very beatle-esque in it's approach would be barely inside the ballpark as this group has many different styles interwoven in its fabric.lyrically can be compared to Steely Dan but not as smug.More off the wall writing thanks in Large part to lead singer/songwriter John Palumbo. Although this band's been around for 27 years(and still going strong) they're songs are as revelant and timely as today. Check out "Poptown"(hey N'sync,Backstreet Boys,et al. you listening??)."she's a dancer" explores transsexual themes.(Hey guys ever go in a bar and hit on a girl that wasnt??this one's for you!!).Also check out their great musicianship on "Ice".just a other-worldly musically crafted song. They are without a doubt one of the best groups YOU have never heard, but it just goes to show how much great music is out there that you can find.
The Best From The Best!.......2000-08-18
A nearly perfect, representative collection from the greatest unknown band ever. Beautifully showcases their songwriting, tightness, and musicianship. An excellent starting point to becoming a CTS fan, it's also a great cd to have if it's all you can find. If you like your music "balanced" this is for you - CTS writes listenable, catchy tunes that still features great technical musicianship. Their music is both intelligent and visceral. Their stuff is usually complicated with a lot of time skips and complex arrangements but still easy to listen to. They are also a tremendously powerful live band.
A Good Retrospective.......2000-05-01
A good selection for anyone familiar with the band or just starting out. I was surprised and glad to see so many "Crack Heads" reviewing this and their other albums. I was fortunate to see them live twice in Atlanta at The Great Southeast Music Hall in '76 and '78. Their first self titled album is still my personal favorite and I agree that a greatest hits album from this group is incomplete without "Robots for Ronnie". Buy this one and then check out their first album.
A Great Collection.......2000-03-25
I bought the first CTS album in 1975 in Tulsa Oklahoma of all places and got to see them in Baltimore in 1977 with Frank Zappa. Good Matchup! Their first four albums were great, but there was quite a dropoff starting with "White Music", except "Hot Razors". I disagree with some of the other reviewers about "Safety In Numbers". It was great considering John left the band. My hope is to see these albums properly 24-bit remastered with first class original reproductions for the CD inserts instead of the crude 1988 2 albums on a CD attempt. If you missed this band the first go around, this collection will do nicely even if they left off "Robots For Ronnie" and "Safety In Numbers".

Here are five and a half hours of little-known music dating from the mid-12th century to the start of the 16th. Some of it comes from France (Provence, in particular), some from Spain (songs of praise to the Virgin Mary--many in amazing dance rhythms), some from Italy (songs of love and war of the troubadours). There are instrumentals with great vigor, complicated vocal works, chant, the expected music of praise, and a few unexpectedly ribald--almost lewd--songs. Taken a CD at a time, this is a magnificent journey, but be warned: being stuck in the Middle Ages for too long might make you yearn for those simple, high-minded times. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
but what are they saying?.......2006-06-06
This is, musically, a wonderful set. But beware: there are no song text translations; a fatal oversight for six CDs of almost exclusively vocal music by composers to whom text was as important as melody, and in languages that don't exist anymore. In that regard, it was very disappointing.
A heapin' helpin' of early music.......2005-10-14
Wonderful from start to finish, this set is quite a sampler, with enjoyable selections performed and recorded well. I suspect some accomodation is being made to the comtemporary listener here and some of the performances may not be 100% "historically accurate." But so what? I've been listening to this at home and while out and about on my iPod. There's quite a variety here which causes the set to avoid the "sameness" of many other sets of this type I've purchased. And the price is defnitely right, particularly for a used copy. What've you got to lose? Give it a shot!
Exclent cd for mediaeval music........1999-11-09
If your just getting into music from this time period this is the cd for you. It gives samples of music that dates from the 1100s to the 1400s.
