Mysteria

Editorial Reviews

From the first notes of the Lenten antiphon "Immutemur," you feel a soothing, reassuring calm from Chanticleer's sensuous, lyrical legato style and perfect unison expression and phrasing. This is first class singing, no matter what the repertoire. But this just happens to be chant, which requires a particular sensitivity to syllabic emphasis and to the rise and fall of phrasing, all of which is determined as much by tradition as by sense of the text. Since there is no existing notation that clearly indicates rhythm or meter for the earliest body of chant repertoire, and there is no unbroken line of chant singing that goes back to the first and second centuries, singers have to rely on a certain accepted scholarship and a tradition that's only a couple of hundred years old. Chanticleer's performing decisions here are articulate, musicologically sensible, and above all musically satisfying, taking this music to its proper level of exalted simplicity. The program includes some of the gems of Gregorian chant, such as "Pange lingua, Crux fidelis" and "Victimae paschali laudes." --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Mysteria - draws me into the temple of tempation.......2007-02-27

thanks amazon, for recommendations and listen to samples, or I would never
have found and bought MYSTERIA. I enjoy Delerium & Enigma, and now Mysteria.
The Chants and Angelic Voices are very "moody". I espeically
get "tempted" by track #8. ALSO recommend - BLUE STONE.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-02-17

I just want to point out to the reviewer James Liakos "James L" about how this album is a rip off of Phobos; this is the same artist who created Phobos; Mark Adams Allison is his name. He also has an album called Of Earth & Sky but goes by the name Spirit Level which is the same style of music.

4 out of 5 stars Another Offspring.......2007-02-15

For those of you who know what it's all about, this cd is actually good, even though there are "samples" from other musicians work, the music on this release is amusing.
Having been a Delerium fan since 1989, I have enjoyed the opportunity in listening to other musicians grow from Deleriums lead.
Once Enigma came along it has pretty much been this way. Even Delerium switched it up a bit when Enigma hit the circuit.
If you are debating on purchasing 'Mysteria', I say buy it, it is worth it and it will grow on you.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better without the copying off other artists.......2007-02-15

I agree with another reviewer here.

There are several good songs on this album for those into the more new agey, ethereal type (meditative, relaxing, floating) music.

Unfortunately it's surprisingly disappointing and suspect as to why this artist ripped off Phobos and especially world-wide known Moby (and Enigma?) on several songs here. I own Phobos, Moby, and Enigma (several Moby and Enigma albums) and was surprised and unhappy to hear songs so close to copying effect to great, original ones I already have. There's something unattractive and annoying in hearing an artist do good music and then a song comes on which clearly reminds you of Enigma, Moby, or Phobos to the point where an actual leading melody or sound has been taken, sometimes cut up but too taken overall from the original hit source. Several tracks on this otherwise pretty good album sound like blatant rip-offs and whether that was the artists attempt here or not is beyond me but it doesn't look good. I don't care if he is friends with these guys. Be original. Focus on new ideas. For for heavens sake, create your own work!!

For teaching Yoga class this album has some very floating songs on it, but I'm afraid the students who are generally more aware of new age artists and music like myself will instantly recognize the several unoriginal songs. Either way, it isn't worth chancing in my opinion.

This artist got too inspired maybe but the overall effect is good mixed with disappointing. It's better to be and stay as far away from sounding similar to others even if you're inspired. As an artist you develop more praise and smiles that way. People spead your name around more if they're pleased and impressed with your work. I feel mixed with this album overall but there is some fresh, good work on it for those into New Age.

For those into this type of music and want some of the best , check out:

Phobos - Phobos ... (Great New Age albums)

Amethystium ... (several albums by this artist, they're all very good)

Nicola Hitchcock - Passive Aggressive ... (I just heard this the other day, very relaxing, beautiful female vioce, new agey)

5 out of 5 stars An enchanting ethereal experience.......2006-12-11

I heard this CD for the first time at a listening station at Borders and immediately picked it up. Tempting the Muse is a beautiful CD, reminding me of early Enigma - still one of my favorite albums - and Delerium from the Karma/Poems era. Unlike the more recent Enigma productions Mysteria keeps to the smooth mix of Gregorian chants, sexy female vocals, and deep grooves. Check out especially track 9, Awake Inside A Dream. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who loved the first and second Enigma records.

5 out of 5 stars Music to Transport You.......2007-01-21

I love this CD and it accomplishes exactly what I'd hoped it would--it is relaxing, meditative, reflective and beautiful. I use it for my yoga exercises or when I want calming music.

2 out of 5 stars The wrong CD.......2005-09-04

I really made a mistake in choosing this CD. The presentation was near perfect but I was looking for something more than just chanting.

5 out of 5 stars Truely the best..........2003-09-12

...CD of Gregorian Chant (other than that recorded by our local abbey) that I have in my collection. The purity of pronounciation, the precision of timing and phrasing is beyond compare. Whether a lover of chant, or a first time listener, I recommend you give this a try.

Turn out the lights, light some candles, burn some incense and you will be transported to another, far more peaceful and less stressful place. I use this CD to focus on God during my prayer times, and I find it an invaluable worship resource.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2002-05-19

I came upon Chanticleer through my interest in Renaissance polyphony. I bought their recording of Palestrina's Missa Pro Defunctis and was extremely pleased. I thought at first that they were explicitly dedicated to early music (I had only come across the Palestrina and this chant CD); my impression was that they were a kind of all-male version of the Tallis Scholars. I discovered, though, that they explore all types of music (from early to contemporary, even commissioning new works on a fairly regular basis). I was able to see them in concert a few weeks ago, and as always was impressed with their skill.

This group really does do almost everything well. They have put to disc a recording of Tallis' If Ye Love Me (one of the English Anthems) that is wonderful and sublime. When I heard them a few weeks ago, they did a few 20th century Cuban folk songs that were just as enjoyable. They are known best (probably) for their smooth sound and great blending. There are never any rough edges to any of the voices - even the countertenors, who are really quite skilled, by the way - and their balance is delicate and precise. That same smoothness is present on this CD as well. At times it is hard to believe that several voices are singing; the pitch and intonation is so good that often the 6 or so could pass for one or two. As usual, they are quite sensitive to the dynamics of the vocal line - their approach is subtle, and not forced. The result is an hour or so of chant that is soothing and relaxing, but also engaging and never monotonous.

The only drawback is this: as I understand the current state of "authentic" chant practice, Chanticleer's approach is probably not on the cutting edge of scholarly theory (they do not add some of the melismatic decorations that some groups use, for example). If you are really interested in that authenticity, the smooth voices might turn you off as well; many other groups use coarseness of the voices for texturing. Even if you are a stickler for those things, though, the visceral pleasure of listening to this recording will probably persuade you to put aside some of your ideas about "correct" practice.

On the other end of the spectrum (listeners with not much chant experience) this CD works to great effect as well. Again, the disc is an easy one to listen to; it is quiet and reflective without being spiritless. This CD might be a good choice for first exposure to Gregorian chant.

Highly recommended for all types of listeners. As per usual for Chanticleer, it is high quality work.

5 out of 5 stars a great cd.......2001-10-23

This cd is great if your always feeling stressed out. The cd really shows how beautiful the latin language can be. Gregorian chanting is also one of the most oldest forms of christain worship dating back to a time when people lived in fear of the "dragons" that lived across the Altanic ocean and the "demons" that lived beyond what is now Germany. People looked to a higher power for comfort and still today the music is very relaxing. If you love the haunting latin voices are if your just a fan of the middle ages(the name chanticleer comes from the Chaucer's Canterbury Tales) then this cd is a must for you.

If you thought you're going to get the same quality of music heard on the "Mythos" that produced the album "Eternity", and "The Reality Of A Dreamer", this may not be the same experience. In-fact, I'm not even sure its the same Producer! The tracks that are mamed as "tributes", on this cd, You'd be better off listening to the originals. The tributes include electronic/Nu Age greats, such as "Jean Michel Jarre", and "Vangelis"...
Look, they have done a very good job with making the tracks sound as close to the originals as possible, but all I can say is that If you can buy this set, then you are well and truly financially able to buy the original artists' albums. Some of the covers work, but some of them fall a little too hard on the concrete! The other featured artists, well, I am at a loss for words, as I dont believe they're worth the mention.

I'm not trying to turn ANYONE'S stomach from getting this cd, all I'm saying is that it may not entirely satisfy, if you want more of what you've heard before!

For the cd's that are original tracks, (from what I can gather - as there isn't much information to support where the sources of the music are from)they are very well written, and work nicely! My main concerns are the insecurites, attached to the authencity of the sounds... Well! I guess we'll never know...!

    4 out of 5 stars 109 tracks of various moods & tempo's.......2006-12-09

You need to be a fan of New-Age, Electronica or Ambient music to enjoy this selection of 10 CDs for the low price of 1 CD. Many a reader will be wondering what is wrong with this collection to be sold for that cheap a price, however you do get value for money. Whether you're into relaxing music, ethno-fusion, or just ambient easy listening every CD is directed at different people. The four artists involved in this project are Vangelis, Mythos, Celtica and M.A.S.S.

I won't go into every CD in this 10CD Set but will state there are music for relaxation, or background music, or music you can play for meditation. Whatever your preference, newage style, you have it in this collection. If you are a fan of X-FILES, you have mystical theme based music in CD 1 & 4. If you are into yoga and meditation, check out CD 3 & 10. If you enjoy Celtic music with a slightly rock feel, check out CD7.

All in all, I recommend New Age lovers to purchase this deserving and value for money offering at a real cheap price.
